JP Morgan’s Dimon Urges US to Pump More Oil Amid Global Energy Crisis

  • JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon says the US should pump more oil, amid the global energy crisis.
  • Energy prices have gained sharply after major exporter Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
  • The US has huge energy reserves but exports are hitting their upper limits.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon said the US should pump more oil amid the world’s energy crisis, just days after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, agreed to an production cut that is equivalent to 2% of the global supply.

“Obviously, America needs to play a real leadership role — America is the swing producer, not Saudi Arabia,” Dimon told CNBC in an interview on Monday. “And we should have gotten that right starting in March. It’s almost too late to get it right because obviously, this is a longer-term investment.”

Energy prices have gained sharply after Russia invaded Ukraine in February as Russia is a major exporter of oil and gas. Fears of a worsening energy crunch heightened in recent months after Russia started cutting natural-gas supplies to Europe — a development Dimon called “pretty predictable.”

“In my view, America should have been pumping more oil and gas,” he told CNBC.

The US is the world’s largest producer of oil, producing 18.9 million barrels of the fuel a day, per the Energy Information Administration, or EIA. However, the US is also the world’s largest consumer of oil, so exports are limited.

By comparison, the de facto OPEC leader, and major exporter Saudi Arabia produces 10.8 million barrels of oil a day but consumes just 3.2 million barrels daily, exporting the rest, the EIA said.

And while the US has huge energy reserves, the industry’s exports are hitting maximum levels and can’t be boosted overnight, US shale producers told the Financial Times in the last few months.

Dimon’s comments came days after OPEC and its allies agreed to slash oil output, in response to a weaker global economy. The White House said US President Joe Biden was “disappointed by the shortsighted decision.”

Janet Yellen, the US Treasury Secretary, echoed the sentiment and told the FT in a Sunday interview that OPEC’s decision is “unhelpful and unwise.” She was speaking ahead of the ongoing International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings in Washington this week, where soaring inflation will be a key discussion topic.

Dimon told CNBC there’s now a longer-term problem of the world not producing enough oil and gas, in order to reduce the use of coal and transition to renewable energy. Describing the issue as a “critical” one, he said “this should be treated almost as a matter of war at this point, nothing short of that,” he added.

In the same interview, Dimon gave a gloomy forecast of the economy, predicting a recession for the US in the next six to nine months.

USWNT vs. Haiti score: Alex Morgan’s first-half brace secures 3-0 win in Concacaf W Championship opener

The United States women’s national team kicked off the 2022 Concacaf W Championship in style with a 3-0 victory over Haiti in the opening game of the tournament in Monterrey, Mexico.

The U.S. staved off a couple of chances from Haiti, including a penalty-kick miss that ricocheted off the post, but a first-half brace from Alex Morgan and a late goal by Midge Purce in the 84th minute was enough to secure three points for the Americans on their road to World Cup and Olympic qualification.

Morgan was the star of the show as she scored on a flick off a Mallory Pugh cross in the 16th minute to get things going. She followed that up by heading home a cross from Kelley O’Hara in the 23rd minute.

The San Diego Wave star also hit the woodwork on a header in the 11th minute to apply the pressure on the Haitians in the early going. Morgan has 21 goals in her 21 appearances in qualifiers, including at least one goal in five straight qualifiers.

Check out some more highlights and takeaways from the game:

Haiti had strong chances

This team has several players on the current roster who were part of the 2018 U-20 women’s World Cup team, and the familiarity among the squad is an added benefit for them as they go up against teams in the Concacaf region.

The team had an outstanding chance in the seventh minute with a free-kick opportunity by Kethna Louis that just narrowly missed the far post.

Dumornay had a clear chance in the 37th minute as she beat several U.S. defenders with only Murphy to beat inside the box, but was unable to finish.

VAR makes debut at Concacf W Championship

Video Assistant Referee made its debut at the Concacaf W Championship with several moments where it was put use. By the end of the match, the USWNT saw two goals called back, a potential penalty ruled out due to an offside position, and a red card issued to Haiti rescinded

Shortly ahead of halftime, Roselord Borgella collided with O’Hara and made full contact with studs at a high angle on a 50/50 ball — and was issued a red card — only for the play to be reviewed and the red rescinded and yellow issued instead.

Take a look at the moment here:

The USWNT ultimately scored a third goal, as Mewis delivered service into the box, and a failed clearance allowed Purce to connect on goal inside the box late in the game.

The United States will square off against Jamaica on Thursday in the second of three group stage games. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET on Paramount+, with studio coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET. Megan Rapinoe, who made an appearance as a second-half sub in this game, will be forced to miss the match as she will be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House. The Americans last played Jamaica in June of 2021 in a 4-0 friendly win. A win here could put the USWNT in prime position to advance to the semifinals, which would secure qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

Lisa Byington and Aly Wagner will serve as match commentators with Jenny Chiu as the sideline reporter. Host Poppy Miller, along with U.S. Hall of Fame goalkeeper Briana Scurry, former Canada national team player Kaylyn Kyle and UNLV women’s soccer coach Jenny Ruiz-Williams will serve as studio analysts throughout the competition.

Piers Morgan’s controversial comments about Meghan Markle cleared by U.K.’s Ofcom: ‘Do I get my job back?’

Piers Morgan’s controversial comments about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey have been cleared by Ofcom.

The U.K.’s office of communications confirmed on Wednesday it had concluded its investigation into the former “Good Morning Britain” co-host’s comments made on the ITV program on March 8, which drew more than 40,000 complaints.

“Today we’ve concluded our investigation into Piers Morgan’s comments on Good Morning Britain in the wake of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey,” Ofcom tweeted.

Ofcom listed the investigation status as “not in breach,” and in a summary called it a “finely-balanced decision.”

MEGHAN MARKLE BULLYING CLAIMS ‘RESCINDED’ BY PALACE STAFF: REPORT

“Mr. Morgan’s comments were potentially harmful and offensive to viewers, and we recognise the strong public reaction to them. But we also took full account of freedom of expression. Under our rules, broadcasters can include controversial opinions as part of legitimate debate in the public interest, and the strong challenge to Mr. Morgan from other contributors provided important context for viewers,” the decision summary of the 97-page report reads.

“Nonetheless, we’ve reminded ITV to take greater care around content discussing mental health and suicide in future. ITV might consider the use of timely warnings or signposting of support services to ensure viewers are properly protected,” it concludes.

Morgan reacted to the decision on Wednesday, asking his nearly 8 million Twitter followers if it means he will now get his job back.

“I’m delighted OFCOM has endorsed my right to disbelieve the Duke & Duchess of Sussex’s incendiary claims to Oprah Winfrey, many of which have proven to be untrue. This is a resounding victory for free speech and a resounding defeat for Princess Pinocchios. Do I get my job back?” Morgan wrote.

Morgan was initially met with backlash after saying he didn’t “believe a word” of Markle’s claims of royal family racism and bullying during a tense on-air exchange with his former co-host Alex Beresford over the couple’s explosive interview with Winfrey. At the time, Morgan walked off the “Good Morning Britain” set, declaring, “OK, I’m done with this. Sorry, no, can’t do this.”

One day later, his exit was confirmed by the network.

In the bombshell conversation with Winfrey that aired on March 7, Markle said she felt suicidal and regretted believing the British royal family’s claim it would “protect” her after marrying Prince Harry in 2018. After the birth of their son Archie in 2019, they quit their royal duties in 2020 and moved to the United States.

Morgan’s TV scandal later led to drama at “The Talk” after Sharon Osbourne expressed support for his comments in an exchange with her former co-host Sheryl Underwood. Osbourne ultimately left the CBS talk show, leading Morgan to rip the network for caving to cancel culture.

ITV did not immediately return Fox News’ request for comment.

Meghan Markle latest news – Piers Morgan’s MASSIVE snub to Duchess and Harry as he ignores her 40th birthday

EXPLAINED: HOW DOES HBO’S THE PRINCE PORTRAY THE ROYAL FAMILY?

HBO’S newest show, The Prince, is an animated series surrounding the British royal family. Since its debut on the streaming service, The Prince has been both praised and condemned for its portrayal of the royal family.

The animated series is set from the perspective of eight-year-old Prince George, Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge’s eldest child, and the future heir to the British throne. In the show, Prince George is portrayed as a sassy and effete royal commentator.

Following the release of the show, it was met with both praise and criticism following the use of Prince George as their main character.

“Bottom line, children are off limits,” women’s rights activist and author Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu said on Good Morning Britain.

While many have taken shots at the content, Orlando Bloom, the voice of the Duke of Sussex on The Prince and real-life friend of Prince Harry, defended the comedy.

“It’s not malicious or intended to be. He’s really got his finger on the pulse, Gary. He’s so smart and so zeitgeisty,” Bloom said about the show.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, made formal complaint to UK broadcaster over Piers Morgan’s comments

ITV announced on Tuesday that Morgan would leave the program he hosted, “Good Morning Britain,” after he cast doubt on whether Meghan had suicidal thoughts, a major revelation from her blockbuster interview with Oprah Winfrey.

“Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain,” ITV said on Tuesday. “ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

CNN understands that Meghan’s complaint to ITV concerned the impact Morgan’s comments could have on others and how it could degrade the seriousness of mental health issues. The complaint did not relate to the personal nature of Morgan’s attacks.

On Monday’s edition of “Good Morning Britain,” Morgan questioned whether the Duchess was being truthful about having suicidal thoughts. His comments sparked a huge controversy in Britain, and he was rebuked by mental health charity Mind.

UK media regulator Ofcom said it had received over 41,000 complaints about Monday’s edition of “Good Morning Britain,” and had launched an investigation under its “harm and offence rules.”

On Wednesday, Morgan said that he “still” does not believe Meghan.

“I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t [believe her],” Morgan tweeted. “If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”

CNN will soon launch Royal News, a weekly newsletter bringing you the inside track on the royal family, what they are up to in public and what’s happening behind palace walls. Sign up here.

Stephen Colbert Reacts To Piers Morgan’s Meghan Markle Comments & ITV Exit – Deadline

Shortly after Piers Morgan’s dramatic Good Morning Britain walkout, the ITV breakfast show announced that the anchor will not return to the news program. Celebrating the departure was The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert, who promised UK viewers a more positive experience with Morgan gone.

“Congratulations, tomorrow’s going to be a great morning, Britain,” the late night host quipped, playing on the ITV program’s title.

Following the explosive CBS Meghan Markle-Prince Harry interview conducted by Oprah Winfrey on Sunday, Morgan shared on Monday that he did not believe her remarks about her mental health. The Suits actress revealed on Sunday that her negative experience with British media and the Royal Family  caused suicidal thoughts. Following his controversial comments, Morgan’s co-star Alex Beresford challenged the former CNN anchor, causing Morgan to storm off stage.

Meghan Markle & Prince Harry’s Oprah Interview To Re-Air Friday As CBS Reschedules ‘MacGyver’, ‘Magnum P.I.’ & ‘Blue Bloods’ Originals

During his opening segment, Colbert noted that Morgan can’t take the criticism he dishes out. Still enamored by Oprah’s interview with the Royal couple, Colbert couldn’t help himself in using the conversation’s most controversial moments against the news figure.

“Piers is such a baby that someone at Buckingham Palace just asked what color he’s gonna be,” Colbert said.

While the latest in Royal controversies and British media took over the first half of his opening segment, Colbert also recapped the biggest news at home. With the gradual decrease in case numbers, The Late Show host said he looks forward to the day where he “can stop saying ‘in latest Covid news.”

He discussed the “good news” of increased vaccination rates and the latest CDC information that people who have received their vaccines can gather with vaccinated friends and loved ones without masks indoors. Colbert also took on Covid-19 relief and the First Dog’s “biting incident.”

Piers Morgan’s Meghan Markle Comments Under Investigation

U.K. media regulator Ofcom has launched an investigation after more than 41,000 people wrote in to complain about ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” host Piers Morgan’s comments on Meghan Markle.

On Monday’s edition of the show, Morgan said he did not believe Markle’s statement about mental health, which she made during her and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, which was broadcast in the U.S. Sunday evening.

Markle said that she had approached people in the Royal “institution” for help after she had suicidal thoughts, but was turned down.

“Who did you go to? What did they say to you? I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report,” Morgan said on the show.

“We have launched an investigation into Monday’s episode of ‘Good Morning Britain’ under our harm and offence rules,” an Ofcom spokesperson told Variety. Ofcom had received 41,015 complaints about Morgan’s comments by 2 p.m. U.K. time on Tuesday.

Variety has reached out to ITV for comment on the Ofcom investigation.

There was high drama on the Tuesday edition of “Good Morning Britain” when Morgan stormed off the set in a huff during the live broadcast, after a verbal altercation with weatherman Alex Beresford who supported Markle.

He later returned to the show and said: “When we talked about this yesterday, I said, as an all encompassing thing, I don’t believe what Meghan Markle is saying generally in this interview and I still have serious concerns about the veracity of a lot of what she said. But let me just state for the record on my position on mental illness and on suicide. These are clearly extremely serious things and should be taken extremely seriously and if someone is feeling that way they should get the treatment and the help they need every time. And if they belong to an institution like the Royal family and they go and seek that help they should absolutely be given it.”

“It’s not for me to question if she felt suicidal, I am not in her mind and that is for her to say,” he added. “My real concern was a disbelief frankly… that she went to a senior member of the Royal household and told them she was suicidal and was told she could not have any help because it would be a bad look for the family. If that is true a) that person should be fired and b) the Royal family have serious questions that need to be answered.”

ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall said on Tuesday that she believed Markle completely and the broadcaster also issued a statement. “ITV is committed to mental health and wellbeing and working with our charity partners on ‘Britain Get Talking,’ which is about encouraging people to talk about their mental health,” the statement said. “It is very important that if anyone has suicidal thoughts that they should always speak out and be listened to.”

“Britain Get Talking” is an ITV mental wellness initiative.
