Shannon Sharpe, Ja Morant’s dad separated in heated exchange at Lakers-Grizzlies halftime, later hug it out

You just never know what you’re going to see at a Lakers game in Los Angeles. Courtside celebrities are a regular occurrence, and they occasionally engage in banter (friendly or not-so-friendly) with players during the game. It’s usually in the spirit of competition, but every once in a while things can get out of hand.

That’s exactly what happened just after the halftime buzzer during the Lakers’ 122-121 win over the Memphis Grizzlies at Crypto.com Arena on Friday, when Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end and Fox Sports’ Shannon Sharpe got into a heated exchange with multiple members of the Grizzlies.

The whole thing appeared to start when Memphis forward Dillon Brooks had words for Sharpe on his way to the locker room. Sharpe was not having it, and gestured to Brooks to come over to him. Grizzlies center Steven Adams then made his way toward Sharpe as a mob of players and security guards began to form. Eventually Tee Morant, the father of Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant, joined in, and Sharpe directed his attention toward him as the two were separated.

According to ESPN’s Mark Jackson, Tee Morant said that his “blood pressure didn’t go up a bit — nothing but love and respect for Shannon Sharpe.”

“They didn’t want this smoke,” Sharpe told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin at halftime. “They do all that talking and jockeying and I ain’t about that jockeying. It started with Dillon Brooks. I said he was too small to guard LeBron. He said, “F—‘ me. I said ‘F—‘ you back. He started to come at me and I said, ‘You don’t want these problems.’ And then Ja came out of nowhere talking. He definitely didn’t want these problems. Then the dad came and he obviously didn’t want no problems. But I wanted anything they had. Don’t let these fools fool you now.”

Cooler heads seemed to prevail as Sharpe took his seat for the second half. Later, Sharpe and Tee Morant were seen sharing an embrace at the end of the third quarter.

Brooks responded after the game, saying that Sharpe shouldn’t have been allowed to remain in the arena after the altercation.

Lakers superstar LeBron James voiced his support for Sharpe following the win.

“I run with Shannon 365 days, 366 in a leap year, 24/7. That’s my guy,” James said. “I’ll always have his back. He can talk with the best of them, that’s for sure.”

Luckily things didn’t escalate to the point of a physical altercation, but it was certainly a memorable night in Los Angeles.

Ja Morant’s perfect tweet to Steph Curry’s ‘night night’ dagger vs. Mavericks

Steph Curry put the Dallas Mavericks to bed on Friday night.

Down by as many as 19 points, Curry fueled the Warriors’ furious 126-117 comeback win and inserted the dagger into Dallas with a game-sealing 3-pointer with 36.2 seconds left.

As the basketball flew out of his hand, Curry appeared to literally say “night night” to the Mavericks.

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant, whose season was given the “night night” treatment when Golden State defeated the Grizzlies in six games in the Western Conference semifinals, seemed to enjoy the moment on Twitter.

Curry has pulled out the move several times during the Warriors’ playoff run.

Curry has been outstanding through two games of the Western Conference finals. He posted a double-double in Game 1 with 21 points and 12 rebounds, and he followed it up with a team-high 32 points in Friday’s victory.

Curry will get a chance to bid Mavericks fans a good night in person during Game 3 at American Airlines Center on Sunday.

Curry, Thompson, Green defend Poole after Morant’s insinuation

The Golden State Warriors blew out the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 3 of their Western Conference Semifinals series, winning 142-112.

But the score was hardly the story afterwards. Memphis superstar Ja Morant limped off the court late in the game, and replays of a tangle for the ball with Jordan Poole immediately kicked off a heated discourse about whether Poole had committed a dirty play when he swiped at the ball and hit Morant’s knee.

Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said Poole “yanked” Morant’s knee, and he wasn’t sure whether it was on purpose. Morant tweeted, then deleted, a take further insinuating that Poole was going out of his way to injure Memphis’ best player.

Warriors players, meanwhile, were not interested in litigating whether Poole had broken an unwritten rule. Stephen Curry was perhaps the most forceful in his postgame presser. “It’s not a joking matter that Ja is hurt,” he said. “But the rest of this is BS.” He added, “You know that term hot stove contact? That’s what it felt like. Keep it moving.”

In his presser, Klay Thompson — who laughed when he was informed of Morant’s “broke the code” tweet — also made it clear he wasn’t going to entertain what he believes are manufactured concerns by the Grizzlies. “I’ve had a bad knee injury,” he told reporters. “Jordan had no malicious intent. … He’s not out here clubbing people in the back of the head on fast breaks. We play the game the right way.”

Draymond Green, usually the most outspoken Dubs player, actually took the most diplomatic approach, albeit noting that he didn’t think anything nefarious had gone down. “It looked to me like they bumped knees before [Poole] even reached,” Green said. When he was asked about Morant’s now-deleted tweet, Green actually demurred: “I’m not going to sit here and go tit-for-tat. We have a basketball game to try to win Monday.”

Indeed they do. Game 4 is scheduled for Monday at Chase Center at 7 p.m.
