The Nintendo Switch Has A Big Summer Sale Right Now

Image: Nintendo

The dog days of summer are officially here. Whether you’re trying to take your mind off the heat or the bad headlines, you’re in luck: Nintendo is currently running a major sale on digital Switch games. Cool off with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze or mind-meld with a sentient hat in Super Mario Odyssey for 30% off the normal sticker price.

That’s not a giant discount in the larger world of gaming, but it’s a big deal for the notoriously stingy Nintendo eShop, where first-party games especially remain full price years after launch (unlike, for example, PlayStation where you can currently get God of War for just $20). The handheld hybrid’s current promotion is called the Nintendo eShop Big Ol’ Super Sale, and while it’s not as sweeping as last year’s Black Friday discounts, there’s still a lot of decently priced stuff if you’re looking for something to play while lying in front of the box fan or lounging in the pool.

Here’s the first-party stuff, discounted 30% off the normal $60 MSRP:

  • Super Mario Odyssey – $42
  • Super Mario Maker 2 – $42
  • Paper Mario: The Origami King – $42
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening – $42
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze – $42
  • Pikmin 3 Deluxe – $42

Why is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, a 2018 port of a 2014 Wii U game, still regularly full price? Who can say. But Tropical Freeze remains a gem and one of the best platformers of the modern era. Here are some other standouts from the sale:

  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore – $42
  • Astral Chain – $42
  • Daemon X Machina – $42
  • Bravely Default II – $42
  • Shin Megami Tensei V – $42
  • Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga – $45
  • Monster Hunter Rise – $31
  • Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – $35
  • Dark Souls Remastered – $20
  • Ruined King: A League of Legends Story – $20
  • Tetris Effect: Connected – $24
  • No More Heroes 3 – $30
  • Hades – $15
  • Persona 5 Strikers – $30
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – $30
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – $12
  • Diablo II: Resurrected – $24
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – $30

There are also a few fantastic indies with some nice discounts right now, including Loop Hero ($10.50), Death’s Door ($13), and Chicory: A Colorful Tale ($14), all 2021 standouts on several people’s game-of-the-year lists. I personally will be taking this opportunity to pick up Castlevania Advance Collection ($13.50) and Eastward ($20), because June is usually when I get that itch to go back and play something classic or retro-influenced.

The Big Ol’ Super Sale will run until July 6 just before midnight and eShop purchases net you 5 percent back through gold coins, so you’ll get a few bucks off future games as well.

New Nintendo Switch Controller Revealed

A new controller for Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED consoles has been announced by Nintendo. Since the Switch first launched back in 2017, Nintendo has been releasing a number of variant controllers for the console. These variants have primarily involved the Switch Pro Controller, which is the add-on controller option that has been available for the Switch since it first arrived. Now, Nintendo will be collaborating with fellow Japanese video game publisher Capcom to let loose a new controller in a little over a month.

Launching on June 30th, Nintendo will be releasing a new Switch Pro Controller that crosses over with Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. For those unaware, Sunbreak is the latest expansion for the Switch Monster Hunter title and will be releasing on the same date as this controller. As for the Pro Controller itself, it’s pretty standard in its coloring outside of a gray Malzeno that appears emblazoned across the front of it. The Malzeno is a monster that is actually appearing for the first time in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak which is why it has been chosen to appear on this controller.

As mentioned, Nintendo hasn’t shied away from doing crossovers like this in the past for various Switch Pro Controllers. In fact, this isn’t even the first time that Nintendo has partnered with Capcom for a controller that is associated with Monster Hunter Rise. When the game first launched in early 2021, another Pro controller in this same style was released, but instead of a Malzeno appearing on the face, it contained a Magnamalo. If you’re someone who happened to purchase that first Pro Controller tied to MH Rise then adding this second one to your collection could make for a cool companion. Then again, it’s probably unneeded to own so many Switch controllers.

What are your thoughts on this new Nintendo Switch Pro Controller? Are you going to look to pick this up for yourself or are you content with the Switch controllers that you might already own? Let me know either down in the comments or reach out to me on Twitter at @MooreMan12.

Sunbreak Update Teases Upcoming Reveal

Monster Hunter Rise quickly proved to be one of the biggest Nintendo Switch games of 2021, and fans are eager to see what Capcom has in store next. The game’s Sunbreak expansion is set to arrive next summer, and today Capcom announced that more information will be revealed in Spring 2022. That certainly sounds like a long wait, but hopefully the expansion will prove to be worth it when it does eventually drop. Sunbreak was announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation back in September, and the expansion will feature a new storyline, new monsters, new locations, new gameplay elements, and more.

Capcom’s announcement about the expansion can be found in the Tweet embedded below.

Announcements about future announcements are pretty common for the video game industry, but they can lead to some frustration for fans. However, it’s a way for publishers to give fans an idea when new information will be coming, so they aren’t waiting months to find out what the future holds. In the meantime, fans of Monster Hunter Rise can always keep busy with the game’s new Event Quests, which officially began last Friday. The weekly quests can be downloaded from Senri the Mailman.

Since the game’s release back in March, Monster Hunter Rise has sold more than 7.5 million copies, making it the second best-selling game in the franchise. Given how many players have embraced Rise over the last year, it seems there will be a lot of hype surrounding Sunbreak. It remains to be seen whether the expansion will be worth the wait, but hopefully it will give players an incentive to keep playing Rise long after its release. For now, Monster Hunter fans will just have to see what Spring 2022 will bring!

Monster Hunter Rise is available now on Nintendo Switch, with a PC version releasing on January 12th. Readers can check out all of our previous coverage of the game right here.
