Newly Discovered Anatomy Shields and Monitors Brain
Summary: Researchers have discovered a previously unidentified component of brain anatomy that acts as both a protective barrier and a platform by which immune cells monitor the brain for signs of inflammation and infection.
Source: University of Rochester
From the complexity of neural networks to basic biological functions and structures, the human brain only reluctantly reveals its secrets. Advances in neuro-imaging and molecular biology have only recently enabled scientists to study the living brain at level of detail not previously achievable, unlocking many of its mysteries.
The latest discovery, described today in the journal Science, is a previously unknown component of brain anatomy that acts as both a protective barrier and platform from which immune cells monitor the brain for infection and inflammation.
The new study comes from the labs of Maiken Nedergaard, co-director of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at University of Rochester and the University of Copenhagen and Kjeld Møllgård, M.D., a professor of neuroanatomy at the University of Copenhagen. Nedergaard and her colleagues have transformed our understanding of the fundamental mechanics of the human brain and made significant findings to the field of neuroscience, including detailing the many critical functions of previously overlooked cells in the brain called glia and the brain’s unique process of waste removal, which the lab named the glymphatic system.
“The discovery of a new anatomic structure that segregates and helps control the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in and around the brain now provides us much greater appreciation of the sophisticated role that CSF plays not only in transporting and removing waste from the brain, but also in supporting its immune defenses,” said Nedergaard.
The study focuses on the membranes that encase the brain, which create a barrier from the rest of the body, and keep it bathed in CSF. The traditional understanding of what is collectively called the meningeal layer, a barrier comprised of individual layers known as the dura, arachnoid, and pia matter.
The new layer discovered by the U.S. and Denmark-based research team further divides the space below the arachnoid layer, the subarachnoid space, into two compartments, separated by the newly described layer, which the researchers name the SLYM, an abbreviation of Subarachnoidal LYmphatic-like Membrane. While much of the research in the paper describes the function of SLYM in mice, they also report its actual presence in the adult human brain as well.
The SLYM is a type of membrane called mesothelium, which is known to line other organs in the body, including the lungs and heart. Mesothelia typically surround and protect organs, and harbor immune cells.
The idea that a similar membrane might exist in the central nervous system was a question first posed by Møllgård, the first author of the study. His research focuses on developmental neurobiology, and on the systems of barriers that protect the brain.
The new membrane is very thin and delicate, and consists of only one or a few cells in thickness. Yet the SLYM is a tight barrier, and allows only very small molecules to transit; it seems to separate “clean” and “dirty” CSF.
This last observation hints at the likely role played by SLYM in the glymphatic system, which requires a controlled flow and exchange of CSF, allowing the influx of fresh CSF while flushing the toxic proteins associated with Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases from the central nervous system.
This discovery will help researchers more precisely understand the mechanics of the glymphatic system, which was the subject of a recent $13 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s BRAIN Initiative to the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Rochester.
The SLYM also appears important to the brain’s defenses. The central nervous system maintains its own native population of immune cells, and the membrane’s integrity prevents outside immune cells from entering. In addition, the SLYM appears to host its own population of central nervous system immune cells that use the SLYM for surveillance at the surface of brain, allowing them to scan passing CSF for signs of infection.
Discovery of the SLYM opens the door for further study of its role in brain disease. For example, the researchers note that larger and more diverse concentrations of immune cells congregate on the membrane during inflammation and aging. When the membrane was ruptured during traumatic brain injury, the resulting disruption in the flow of CSF impaired the glymphatic system and allowed non-central nervous system immune cells to enter the brain.
These and similar observations suggest that diseases as diverse as multiple sclerosis, central nervous system infections, and Alzheimer’s might be triggered or worsened by abnormalities in SLYM function. They also suggest that the delivery of drugs and gene therapeutics to the brain may be impacted by SLYM function, which will need to be considered as new generations of biologic therapies are being developed.
Additional co-authors include Felix Beinlich, Peter Kusk, Leo Miyakoshi, Christine Delle, Virginia Pla, Natalie Hauglund, Tina Esmail, Martin Rasmussen, Ryszard Gomolka, and Yuki Mori with Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Copenhagen.

“A mesothelium divides the subarachnoid space into functional compartments” by Kjeld Møllgård et al. Science
Abstract
A mesothelium divides the subarachnoid space into functional compartments
The central nervous system is lined by meninges, classically known as dura, arachnoid, and pia mater.
We show the existence of a fourth meningeal layer that compartmentalizes the subarachnoid space in the mouse and human brain, designated the subarachnoid lymphatic-like membrane (SLYM). SLYM is morpho- and immunophenotypically similar to the mesothelial membrane lining of peripheral organs and body cavities, and it encases blood vessels and harbors immune cells.
Functionally, the close apposition of SLYM with the endothelial lining of the meningeal venous sinus permits direct exchange of small solutes between cerebrospinal fluid and venous blood, thus representing the mouse equivalent of the arachnoid granulations.
The functional characterization of SLYM provides fundamental insights into brain immune barriers and fluid transport.

New for the 2022-2023 season, the Alienware Aurora R15 is the first ever Dell PC equipped with both the 13th generation Intel Raptor Lake processor and the RTX 40 series GPU. The Intel Core i9-13900KF boasts a turbo-boosted clock speed of 5.8GHz and a whopping 24 cores and 32 threads. It’s definitely more powerful than the i9 Alder Lake, and it gives AMD’s flagship AMD Ryzen 9 7950X a run for its money.
The RTX 4090 is far and away the most powerful video card you can get right now. No other GPU, either from NVIDIA or from AMD, comes close. As a reference, the RTX 4090 is about 110% faster at 4K gaming than the already impressive RTX 3080. It’s about 60% faster than the previous king, the RTX 3090 Ti. That could very well be the single biggest performance upgrade within a single generational gap for the GeForce line of cards.

The Black Friday Deals on Samsung’s Best and Biggest Gaming Monitors Are Still Available
It looks like these Black Friday deals on Samsung’s best Odyssey gaming monitors are staying live through the Black Friday weekend (and possibly until Cyber Monday). Both Odyssey Neo G9 and the Odyssey G9 are on sale. The 49″ Odyssey Neo G9 is Samsung first Mini LED QLED display and it’s roughly the size of a football field. It normally commands an equally gargantuan price tag of $2300, but today you can get it for a $1399, or $900 off. The 49″ Odyssey G9 is the precedessor to the Neo G9 and the only noticeable difference is that it lacks the Mini-LED backlight. Ticking that one feature off the list will save you a lot of money because it’s only $899, or $500 off. If you’ve got deep pockets, the even bigger 55″ Odyssey Ark, which sports the same Mini OLED QLED display as the Neo G9, is also on sale.

10% Cashback with Amazon Prime Card (Must Be Logged In)
Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 49″ 4K Gaming Monitor
Extra Potential Savings Alert: If you have an Amazon Prime Card, you can get 10% cashback ($140). That effectively drops the price to $1259.99. If you’re an Amazon Prime member but you don’t have the Amazon Prime Card, well then you should totally sign up for one, since there is no annual fee. This is an amazing card because it gives you 5% cashback on all purchases on Amazon all year round.
So what makes this monitor worth the price? The main thing is the Mini LED display. Samsung’s highest end “Odyssey” series gaming monitor is also Samsung’s only monitor equipped with a Mini LED backlight combined with a quantum dot (QLED) panel. You’ll find Mini LED backlights only in the higher end 4K TVs as well as the newest Apple iPad Pro 12.9″ XDR display, the priciest iPad on the market.
The Samsung Neo G9 isn’t a one trick pony, and all the other specs live up to the hype of a top-end gaming monitor. This truly massive 49″ curved panel monitor boasts a pixel dense 5,120×1440 resolution. That curve, by the way, is pretty extreme (1000R), to the extent that it almost hugs you as you play games. It offers a 1ms response time and a 240Hz refresh rate, which means virtually no input lag or motion blurring. It is HDR2000 certified, meaning it is possible of displaying a searing peak brightness of 2000nits. Plus, it offers G-Sync and FreeSync Premium Pro support. And it has two HDMI 2.1 ports.
Obviously the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 isn’t a monitor for everyone. You need a rather generous gaming budget if you want to add this to your rig. The cost keeps many us gamers at bay, but certainly the barrier to entry has been signficantly lowered with this deal today.
Samsung Odyssey G9 49″ Gaming Monitor
Samsung Odyssey G9 49″ 5120×1440 Curved 1ms 240Hz QLED Gaming Monitor
The Samsung Odyssey G9 was released in August of 2021, so it’s only one year older than the Neo G9. The only real difference is that the Odyssey G9 doesn’t have a Mini-LED backlight. That means it has less local dimming zones and a lower brightness rating (HDR1000 certified vs HDR2000). Everything else is virtually identical. The Odyssey G9 is a 49″ 5120×1440 1000R curved display with a fast 1ms response time, 240Hz refresh rate, and NVIDIA certified G-SYNC compatibility. The HDR1000 quantum dot (QLED) panel boasts 125% more color space than the sRGB standard (95% DCI-P3). If it matters to you at all, this monitor is great to look at as well, from the front as well as the back.
Samsung Odyssey ARK 55″ Gaming Monitor
Samsung Odyssey Ark 55″ Curved 4K 165Hz Mini-LED QLED Gaming Monitor
We can’t mention Samsung’s “best” gaming monitors without mentioning the new Samsung Odyssey ARK. This is a gargantuan 55″ gaming monitor (not TV) with a Mini-LED backlight and QLED panel much like the Neo G9. It has an aggressive 1000R curvature for maximum immersion and has a fast 165Hz refresh rate. For a screen of this size, it has an extremely versatile stand. You can even pivot it to “cockpit mode” for an incredibly vertical experience. Unlike most other gaming monitors, the Odyssey ARK is also equipped with a surprisingly capable sound system.
48″ LG 48GP900-B 4K OLED Gaming Monitor: The Closest Competitor
2022 Release
LG UltraGear 48GP900 48″ 4K (3840×2160) OLED Gaming Monitor
The 48GP900-B is the first Ultragear gaming monitor uses an OLED panel. This is a simliar WOLED panel to the one that you find in the 48″ LG C1 OLED TV but there are a few key differences. Instead of the semi glossy coating found on the OLED TV, the 48GP900 features an anti-glare low reflective coating that is undoubtedly a better fit for close up monitor usage. It also has DisplayPort connectivity and lacks the built-in Smart TV interface. It does carry over the HDMI 2.1 ports with 4K @ 120Hz compatiblity for PS5 and Xbox Series X owners, as well as VRR and G-SYNC support. Additionally, the 120Hz refresh rate can be overclocked to 138Hz when used as a PC monitor. Lastly, if aesthetics matter for you, there is subtle RGB backlighting on the rear of the monitor that isn’t present on the OLED TVs.

DeSantis official says Justice Dept. can’t send monitors to 3 Florida counties
But Brad McVay, the chief counsel for the Florida Department of State, said in a letter issued late Monday that those monitors would not be allowed inside polling places under Florida law.
McVay said the Florida secretary of state’s office — which Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis oversees — would instead send its own monitors to those three counties, which are among the most Democratic-leaning counties in Florida.
“Florida statutes list the people who ‘may enter any polling room or polling place,’” McVay wrote. “Department of Justice personnel are not included on the list.”
The Justice Department said Tuesday that it had received the DeSantis administration’s letter and still has election monitors stationed outside polling locations in Florida.
Although Florida law has an exception allowing law enforcement to enter polling sites, McVay said Justice Department monitors do not qualify.
“Absent some evidence concerning the need for federal intrusion, or some federal statute that preempts Florida law, the presence of federal law enforcement inside polling places would be counterproductive and could potentially undermine confidence in the election,” McVay wrote.
“None of the counties are currently subject to any election-related federal consent decrees,” McVay added. “None of the counties have been accused of violating the rights of language or racial minorities or of the elderly or disabled.”
The Justice Department said in a news release announcing the monitoring locations that it has observed local election procedures nationwide since 1965.
Republicans have waged a sustained campaign against alleged voter fraud over the past two years, despite scant evidence of fraud in the 2020 election, and as threats against politicians, their families and election workers have spiked around the country.
Election officials in battleground states are anticipating delayed results and protracted fights once the polls close Tuesday night.
Separately, Missouri officials on Friday denied the Justice Department’s request to conduct routine inspections under the Americans With Disabilities Act and Voting Rights Act at polling places on Election Day. Secretary of State John Ashcroft (R) reiterated that stance in a meeting Monday.
He told The Washington Post that the Justice Department’s presence amounted to a bid to “bully a local election authority” and could “intimidate and suppress the vote.”
Ashcroft and Cole County Clerk Steve Korsmeyer (R) told federal officials that they would not be permitted to observe polling places Tuesday.
“This is not the Voting Rights Act. This is the Americans With Disabilities Act. What’s next? They’re going to want to be at elections because they want to check that insulation in the building was purchased from China in the 1970s? Give me a break,” Ashcroft said in a phone interview.
He compared Justice Department officials from the U.S. attorney’s office of the Western District of Missouri to “jackbooted thugs” and to armed individuals in Arizona who have been seen patrolling ballot drop boxes.
“I think we’ve already had lawsuits around the country about individuals around polling places,” Ashcroft said. “And they were told that they had to stay away from them because they could intimidate voters.” Justice Department officials last observed Missouri elections in 2016 at polling places in St. Louis.
FBI special agents serving as election crime coordinators will also be on duty in the bureau’s 56 field offices to receive voting-related complaints from the public, according to the Justice Department. Employees in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division will also operate a hotline all day on Election Day, answering calls from people who spot possible violations of federal voting rights laws.
Here come the bendable TVs and monitors that no one asked for
If you’ve been watching display tech lately, you may have noticed an interesting feature: bendable displays. Yes, monitors and TVs that you can bend to be either flat or curved are purportedly coming out soon. The feature is meant to appease those who can’t settle on flat or curved, and most upcoming products feel similarly indecisive, exhibiting identity crises that make it hard to see where they fit… literally. Does something like this belong in a living room, office, or gaming den?
In the case of the LG OLED Flex LX3 4K TV announced Wednesday (no price or release date), the most obvious answer is the living room. It’s a 42-inch TV with a tuner, LG’s webOS, and even LG Display’s OLED Evo technology used in the LG C2 TV. The primary difference from every other TV is that this one has buttons (including buttons on the remote) for changing the screen from flat to a 900R curvature across 20 steps. That provides the potential for an extremely curved TV.
The thing is, you probably don’t want to watch curved television. Vendors tried making this a thing years ago, but as we wrote back then, curved TVs mostly accommodate people sitting pretty close to and directly in front of the TV. That’s not how most people gather ’round the heart of the living room. Living room TVs are frequently shared, with people sitting at various distances from the screen and at varying angles. But up close and centered sounds awfully similar to how most people use monitors.
A Switching Hub is supposed to make it easy to use the TV’s microphone and USB-connected peripherals with an HDMI-connected PC. A dedicated button on the stand toggles between TV and HDMI input. HDMI supports version 2.1, which means the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S can connect and use the TV’s 4K, 120Hz refresh rate. There’s also lots of Adaptive-Sync compatibility, and you can even adjust the viewable screen size down to 27 inches.
These days, gaming is the most popular use for curved screens, as players sit close to the display and feel the virtual world enwrap them. But many living room setups won’t accommodate that sort of setup. Someone with a lot of flexibility may be able to roll a gaming chair up to the TV for an intense gaming session, but we wouldn’t bet on that driving massive sales of bendable TVs that are sure to come at a premium.
A bendable monitor, too
The Corsair Xeneon Flex 45WQHD240 monitor announced last week (price and availability should be announced this year), meanwhile, seems to target PC gaming dens based on specs. It’s a 45-inch monitor with 3440 x 1440, 21:9 resolution, up to an 800R curve, and a W-OLED panel from LG Display. Gray-to-gray response time is reportedly 0.03 milliseconds. Clearly, this is for serious gamers for whom a curved ultrawide monitor with supremely limited motion blur is the ultimate display.
So why put tacky handles on the monitor that let you bend it curved or flat? Surely it can’t just be for the nauseating feeling that I must come with physically manipulating a 45-inch OLED panel that you paid for with your own money. No, it must be for versatility. Many people prefer productivity and other types of computing on a flat panel (although I’ve known some obsessively dedicated workhounds to use curved ultrawides to wrap themselves up in work as well), and the 45WQHD240 should make it so you don’t need multiple monitors for work and gaming.
However, the 45WQHD240’s gaming specs and its likely high price will make it most fitting for extreme gamers who also like ultrawide curved monitors. Users will need a powerful PC with a beefy graphics card to push 4,953,600 pixels at 240 frames per second. The extremely fast video motion processing is made for hardcore players who take the battlefield seriously. And for such players, gaming is a top priority, increasing the chances of the 45WQHD240 mostly being used as a curved ultrawide gaming monitor.
