Man reveals terminal cancer diagnosis after his hairdresser found mole

Tradie, 38, given six months to live after his HAIRDRESSER found a dodgy mole and pressured him to get it checked out by a specialist after doctors sent him home claiming ‘it was nothing’

  • A man has been diagnosed with cancer after his hairdresser noticed a mole
  • Nicholas Smithson said two doctors failed to take the dark growth seriously
  • A skin specialist agreed to do a biopsy and found he had terminal melanoma

By the time Nicholas Smithson’s hairdresser noticed a dodgy looking mole on his neck it was too late – now the 38-year-old has just six months to live.

The boilermaker from Rockhampton, Queensland, said his hairstylist urged him to get the mole checked out.

But when he approached doctors they told him there was ‘nothing to worry about’.

Nicholas Smithson, pictured, had a dodgy mole removed after a hairdresser pushed him to get it checked out – but the operation came too late

Doctors dismissed Nicholas when he asked about the mole – despite it doubling in size in just 11 days – so he went to a skin specialist

In fact the tradie told The Courier Mail he went to two doctors in 11 days after noticing the growth had doubled in size – only to be dismissed.

Nicholas decided to go and see a skin specialist who took a biopsy immediately.

Results showed the growth was a nodular melanoma and that it had spread beyond the blackened mole to his lymph nodes.

He said doctors explained the ‘worst case scenario’ after finding the cancer, leaving him shocked.

‘I remember I looked at my partner and said, ‘I’m going to f***ing die, this is going to kill me’.

‘We went to my house and just stared at the blank wall and cried.’

After his lymph nodes were removed Nicholas found another lump behind his ear – he revealed that’s when he realised how serious things were about to become

A PET scan revealed the cancer had spread throughout his body, into many of his organs and even his spine

What are the symptoms of nodular melanoma?

See a doctor immediately if you have a skin bump, growth, mole, or lesion that:

Is larger than most regular moles or spots on your body

Used to be flat but is now elevated or thicker than it used to be

Is dome-shaped or has a firm lump is either a single colour (black, brown, red, pink or flesh coloured) or a mix of colours (e.g., blue-black, brown-red)

Has either a smooth or rough, crusted surface has changed in its appearance itches or stings

He was raced to Brisbane where he had a bilateral neck dissection – a 10-hour operation to remove the lymph nodes in his neck.

Eleven days later he noticed another growth behind his ear.

A PET scan showed he was riddled with cancer and could no longer expect treatments to lead to a cure.

In August doctors gave him six months to live.

‘It’s like in the movies when people are given bad news, they just disconnect,’ he said.

He admitted to randomly calling friends in hope of comfort and even asking the local funeral director if there was any proof of an afterlife.

Nicholas has always wanted to travel so his friends have started a GoFundMe to help him ‘do some living’ before he dies.

They have raised $17,000 after setting a $5000 goal to help the boiler maker ‘tick off some items on his bucket list’.

Nodular melanomas can spread to major organs within three months, according to Healthline.

The Star-Nosed Mole is one of Earth’s most bizarre-looking creatures

My first thought when looking at this video of The Star-Nosed Mole was “I’m so glad those things aren’t the size of bears.”

Even though these creatures are hamster-sized, though, their noses make them look like something that crawled out of a nightmare. This mole can be found in damp places in northern areas of the United States. Its nose has around 22 appendages and 25,000 minute sensory receptors, known as Eimer’s organs, which help the mole to find its way around. They are great hunters and use electrical impulses to locate their food, such as earthworms and aquatic insects.

I pray that I’ll never be reincarnated into a star-nosed mole.

Mars Rover Being Packed Into Storage After Russian Launch Scrapped

The European Space Agency is scrambling to figure out the ExoMars rover’s next-possible launch window after the agency suspended cooperation with the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover (named for the famous chemist) was slated to launch for the Red Planet in September. It is one half of the ExoMars program; the other half is a Mars orbiter that launched in 2016. Like the Perseverance rover, Rosalind Franklin will conduct an astrobiological search of Mars. But with the September launch called off, the rover’s components will now be stored in Italy until further notice.

“I hope that our Member States will decide that this is not the end of ExoMars, but rather a rebirth of the mission, perhaps serving as a trigger to develop more European autonomy,” said David Parker, director of Human and Robotic Exploration at the ESA, in an agency release.

The Rosalind Franklin rover was developed by ESA, but Roscosmos was providing the Proton rocket to launch the spacecraft, as well as the mission’s landing platform. The landing platform was to be a home base of sorts for the rover’s science experiments, and it would have taken measurements of Mars’ climate, atmosphere, and radiation levels.

Though the Russian invasion interrupted the rover’s timeline, the Rosalind Franklin rover nonetheless had its systems review this month. The ESA review board confirmed that the spacecraft would have been ready for the September launch.

In a statement released earlier this month, ESA said that several proposals on how to proceed with the ExoMars mission without Russian involvement would be submitted in the weeks ahead. But the damage is effectively done when it comes to the rover’s timeline.

The rover’s development was previously delayed due to technical difficulties and the covid-19 pandemic. As the recent review revealed, technical issues had been resolved and, if not for the Ukraine invasion, another rover would soon be on its way to Mars.

Rosalind Franklin can do some things Perseverance cannot. It’s designed to be the first rover to drill over 6.5 feet into the Martian soil, a feat not even NASA’s Mole was capable of. (The InSight lander tried valiantly to dig into the planet, but the Martian soil clumped in a way that made it impossible for the Mole probe to make progress.) So when Rosalind Franklin does get to Mars—fingers crossed—it will be breaking new ground.

A fast-track study to determine ExoMars’ next steps sans Russia is on the way; because launch windows to Mars depend on Earth’s proximity to the Red Planet, it will be at least a couple of years before the mission gets off the ground.
