Mohamed Salah has become the highest paid Liverpool player in history by signing a new three-year contract worth around £350,000 per week.

The 30-year-old Egypt international put pen to paper on Friday on a deal that will keep him at Anfield until the summer of 2025.

It brings to an end a long-running saga over his future and provides a massive boost to manager Jurgen Klopp ahead of pre-season starting next week.

Salah’s previous contract had just one year left to run and there was an increasing risk that he would leave as a free agent next summer.

That prospect has now been averted after Liverpool made him a significantly improved offer.

The Athletic recently revealed that talks initially broke down last December after Salah’s agent Ramy Abbas had flown out to Miami to meet Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon.

Liverpool always intended to return to the negotiating table following the end of the season, however, and now a compromise has been reached.

Salah’s preference was always to stay at Anfield but the 30-year-old wanted a contract that recognised his status as one of the greatest players in world football.

He now has his wish.

With the framework of a deal in place, Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward flew out to see Salah on holiday to close it out.

On his new deal, Salah told Liverpool’s website: “I feel great and (I am) excited to win trophies with the club. It’s a happy day for everyone.

“It takes a little bit of time, I think, to renew, but now everything is done so we just need to focus on what’s next.

“I think you can see in the last five or six years the team was always going (upwards). Last season we were close to winning four, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two trophies.

“I think we are in a good position to fight for everything. We have new signings as well. We just need to keep working hard, have a good vision, be positive and go for everything again.

“My message (to the fans) is the players in the team want to give our best next season to try to win all the trophies.

“As usual, you stay behind us and give us a big push and I am sure we are going to win trophies again (together).”

Klopp said: “This is a special treat for our supporters to enjoy their weekend even more. I’m sure there will be some celebrations for this news tonight. It’s the best decision for us and best decision for him. He belongs with us I think. This is his club now.

“Of course it has taken a little time but that’s absolutely OK and the best things are always worth waiting for anyway. Mo is one of the best players in the world; it’s only normal there are things to sort when you are at his level. So big credit to Julian Ward and Mike Gordon for guiding us to this destination.

“I have no doubt Mo’s best years are still to come. And that’s saying something, because the first five seasons here have been the stuff of legend.”

Salah has scored 156 goals in 254 games since his arrival from Roma for £43.9 million in 2017.

Last season he was crowned both Football Writers’ Player of the Year and PFA Player of the Year.
