Bears minicamp observations: Justin Fields, offense still have long way to go

LAKE FOREST – During the final practice of OTAs, the Bears’ offense had trouble gaining traction.

It was much of the same Tuesday during the first mandatory minicamp practice at Halas Hall.

With referees present, head coach Matt Eberflus elected to ditch the scripted plays and let his offense go against the defense to simulate a game-like setting.

That eight-play sequence started with Justin Fields hitting Darnell Mooney on a crossing route for a decent pick-up.

A false start on rookie left tackle Braxton Jones put the offense behind the sticks. But Fields got the offense out of trouble, hitting running back David Montgomery on a swing pass for a short gain before connecting with Equanimeous St. Brown on a slant for a chunk play.

Then, the offense stalled.

Fields threw incomplete for Velus Jones Jr. down the left side, and the defense blew up a toss to Khalil Herbert on the next play to set up third-and-long. Fields connected with St. Brown on a curl route that was 1 yard short of the sticks. The Bears went for it on fourth-and-1, but the offensive line was whistled for a false start that ended the period.

Eberflus noted Fields and the offense still are very early in the install. That and the nature of unpadded practices can lead to more mistakes than you might see in a practice where the running game is a legitimate threat.

“I would just say that we’re continuing to work on getting better at everything—the footwork, the timing and just keep working on that,” Eberflus said of Fields and the offense. “I think a little bit of that is because you don’t have so much play-pass in this setting here because you’re not really running the ball. It almost becomes almost like a passing camp at times because you’re working on your passing game, because of the nature of the business.

“So, I think those windows will become more clear and more open once we get the pads on, so I’m excited about seeing that.”

Fields finished with a tough stretch in the 11-on-11 portion of practice.
It opened with Jaylon Johnson jumping an out route intended for Nsimba Webster and taking it back for what would have been a pick-six.

Fields then had a pass batted down by Micah Dew-Treadway before missing on his next attempt to finish the rough sequence.

“How do you respond?” Eberflus said when asked what he wanted to see from Fields after those plays. “Bounce back. Bounce back. We’re all going to get knocked down, right? Every one of us. We all get knocked down in life. What do you do? Bounce back. Just get up, next play.

“That’s what I want to see from all of our players, and that’s important. We’re all going to have adversity. You’ve got to step up and go to the next play. That’s what I want to see from him and the rest of the team, too.”

The Bears’ offense has been bogged down in the sessions the media has been able to view. But some of their struggles could be the product of facing a defense that already seems to have bought into Eberflus’ all intensity, all the time mantra.

“Definitely a lot,” Mooney said when asked how the defense challenges the offense. “We realized that the first couple of weeks when they were getting the ball out, punching the ball out, were all over the place. The way that they run to the ball, it makes you scream and want to finish to the end zone because you have guys screaming at you and running fast at you.

“That will help us, for sure. Just being able to finish and understand that guys are going to continue to come.”

Fields admitted he and the offense have a long way to go but was adamant they will be ready when Week 1 arrives.

“I think, for me, it’s just not making the same mistake twice,” Fields said. “If you make that one mistake on a play, just don’t do it again. If you ultimately keep getting better and keep growing, it’ll be less mistakes each and every day, and of course, you’ll be right where you want to be.”

Other notes from Day 1 of mandatory minicamp:

— Robert Quinn wasn’t present Tuesday. Eberflus seemed disappointed the veteran edge rusher elected not to show up but said he’d leave it up to general manager Ryan Poles to sort out. The absence was not excused.

— Offensive guard Dakota Dozier had to be carted off practice with what appeared to be a leg injury. Dozier, who is expected to compete for the starting right guard spot, saw action mainly as the backup left guard before his injury.

— The Bears’ first-string offensive line Tuesday saw Braxton Jones at left tackle, Cody Whitehair at left guard, Lucas Patrick at center, Sam Mustipher at right guard, and Larry Borom at right tackle. Teven Jenkins worked as the second-team right tackle.

Eberflus said the Bears would stick with that alignment for the remainder of minicamp before deciding how to move forward heading into training camp.

“So, we’re just assessing guys’ talents, assessing their skill level, and going forward from there,” Eberflus said. “You want to start honing it down. Guys getting the same looks all the time, ‘I’m playing right guard, I’m playing right tackle,’” and getting the same looks, the same mechanics, so to speak. The technical mechanics to play the position. We want to hone that down; the sooner, the better. We just don’t have the answer right now.”

— Jaquan Brisker also picked off Fields, but this one was on receiver Dazz Newsome who let a ball bounce off his hands and into the arms of the Bears’ rookie safety.

— Kyler Gordon and Al Quadin-Muhammad were present but didn’t participate in practice.

— Rod Marinelli watched practice Tuesday and will speak to the team Wednesday.

49ers cancel final day of minicamp

Photo courtesy of the San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have changed the schedule of their mandatory minicamp, once planned for three days. The team has opted to cancel Thursday’s practice, which was supposed to be the third and final of the week.

Tuesday and Wednesday ended up being the only practices of the week.

The 49ers have also opted to cancel Thursday’s media availability, so there is unlikely to be anything of substance reported from the team’s Santa Clara facility for the rest of the week, barring any roster or contract moves.

Thursday’s practice was initially scheduled for 10:50 a.m. It could be that head coach Kyle Shanahan determined that his players don’t need the extra practice. This week’s minicamp was originally scheduled for next week, and the team decided to move it up.

“I don’t think we’re going to need 12 [Phase 3 practices],” Shanahan said on Tuesday, “so I thought it made more sense to move the minicamp up, get everybody here. We’ll see how this week goes and see what we think we need at the end of the week.”

Watch: Nick Bosa, Trent Williams, others practice at Day 1 of 49ers minicamp

Defensive end Nick Bosa and tackle Trent Williams were among the San Francisco 49ers veterans who did not participate in voluntary organized team activities over the past few weeks. However, they were on hand for the start of the team’s three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.

Also in attendance was wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who sought to be traded earlier this offseason. However, Samuel was not suited up and left the practice field after team warmups.

Below are videos from various sources from Tuesday’s practice. Reporters are required to cease recording once team drills

49ers minicamp, Day 1 notebook: Deebo, Bosa, Williams return

By Rohan Chakravarthi

Jun 7

The San Francisco 49ers began their mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, electing to move their practices up one week after originally scheduling practice from June 13th-15th.

The three-day minicamp will now end on Thursday and represents the continuation of Phase 3 of the offseason program, where live contact isn’t allowed, but teams can continue practicing 11-on-11s.

Here are the biggest headlines from Tuesday for the 49ers:

1. Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, Trent Williams return; Jimmy Garoppolo not present

During OTAs, head coach Kyle Shanahan informed the media that he expected all three of his stars to return for mandatory minicamp, including disgruntled wideout Deebo Samuel, who publicly requested a trade prior to the NFL Draft, via ESPN’s

49ers move mandatory minicamp up to this week; Will Deebo Samuel attend?

The San Francisco 49ers have moved their mandatory three-day minicamp, initially scheduled for June 13-15, up to this week. It will now take place June 7-9. This week was supposed to be the last of organized team activities, with practices initially scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Now, the team will gather on the field from Tuesday through Thursday.

The offseason schedule was originally announced on April 1. Article 22 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement stipulates that clubs may hold one mandatory minicamp for veteran players. This minicamp must occur during Phase Three of the offseason program.

The real question is whether wide receiver Deebo

49ers officially excuse Jimmy Garoppolo from mandatory minicamp

This news shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.

The San Francisco 49ers have excused quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from this week’s three-day mandatory minicamp, which kicks off on Tuesday. The minicamp was initially slated for next week but was pushed up in the offseason schedule.

Garoppolo is still rehabbing from the shoulder surgery he underwent on March 8 and continues to rehab away from the team. He isn’t expected to begin throwing until the end of this month, possibly early July.

Nick Bosa reports to 49ers minicamp ‘most definitely’ in better shape

SANTA CLARA — Even while going through a year in which he registered 19.5 sacks in 20 games, 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa looked forward to what he could do following an ideal offseason to prepare.

Before entering his third NFL season, Bosa spent his months away from the sport attempting to better his strength and conditioning following surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Now that he made it through a full season healthy, he can fine-tune his body while also honing his football skills.

When asked Wednesday if he was in better shape than a year ago, Bosa answered, “Most definitely.”

Bosa reported this week for the team’s mandatory minicamp after spending the bulk of the offseason working out in Florida.

“It was kind of normal offseason training that I really didn’t get to do last year as much,” Bosa said. “I was working my way back to being healthy, and this year I was healthy from the start, so (I) took some time off and got after it.

“Up to this point, it’s been mainly focusing on getting my body where it needs to be to play a long season. And from here on out, I’ll be implementing a lot more football-specific stuff.”

Bosa, who took part in only individual drills during the first two days of camp, looks to be in tremendous shape with, perhaps, even less body fat than when he was last seen around the 49ers’ practice facility.

“His quads are still huge, and he’s ready to play football whenever it’s time to go,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said.

Bosa said he is approximately the same weight at which he played last season as he continued the strict diet on which he has been for several years.

“It’s a better overall offseason because I was able to enjoy myself a little bit because I wasn’t just grinding and resting like I needed to for my knee,” he said. “But now the knee is doing great and I’m able to go about my life normally, which is great.”

Bosa is scheduled to enter the final year of his original four-year contract as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The 49ers have already picked up the fully guaranteed fifth-year option of more than $17 million for the 2023 season.

RELATED: Why 49ers have more urgency for Deebo contract than Bosa

The 49ers and Bosa’s representation have yet to begin negotiations on a long-term contract, which Bosa suggested is not presently on his mind. He said he was not sure when contract talks would begin.

“I’m sure I’ll be notified,” Bosa said. “I’ve just been focusing on getting better. I’ll let my agent worry about that.”

Deebo Samuel expected to attend San Francisco 49ers’ mandatory minicamp, source says

San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Deebo Samuel is expected to attend the team’s mandatory minicamp, which starts Tuesday, despite his recent request to be traded, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Samuel skipped the voluntary portion of San Francisco’s offseason program after publicly acknowledging his trade request in April, amid his hope for a lucrative long-term contract.

Samuel declined to offer specific reasons for requesting the trade but acknowledged that he has informed the Niners of his desire to leave.

The 49ers have stated on numerous occasions that they do not plan to trade Samuel, and coach Kyle Shanahan said last month that he hopes the organization “will get the best thing for the Niners, best thing for Deebo.”

Samuel’s trade request came at a time when the salaries for wide receivers have skyrocketed. The Raiders gave Davante Adams $28.5 million per season on an extension after trading for him, and the Dolphins signed Tyreek Hill to a deal averaging $30 million per season one week later after acquiring him from the Chiefs.

Buffalo’s Stefon Diggs and Philadelphia’s A.J. Brown also received lucrative deals this offseason.

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner contributed to this report.
