Skull Session: A Peach Bowl Trailer With Incredible Vibes, Brian Hartline is B. Rabbit from “8 Mile” and Michigan Memorialized A Photo of Its Flag Plant at Ohio State

The gray sleeves are back, folks.

Those threads are b-e-a-ufitful. Now, please, Ohio State – please, please, please… please – make these a part of the permanent uniforms for both the scarlet and gray jerseys. The school’s colors are scarlet and gray, so let’s act that way.

I conclude my brief but necessary rant.

Let’s have a good Friday, shall we?

FIND A BRICK WALL. On Thursday, I came across a trailer for the battle between Ohio State vs. Georgia in the Peach Bowl created by Buckeye Productions and good gracious, good heavens, great googly moogly – whatever other phrases I can use to explain my astonishment – it is phenomenal.

Find a brick wall. You’ll need to run through it as soon as the trailer ends.

The Peach Bowl is 15 days away. An official trailer will be released by the Ohio State football media team on one of those days. However, until that trailer is released (and maybe after that point), I will be watching the Buckeye Productions video on repeat until Dec. 31 arrives.

New Year’s Eve can’t come soon enough.

JIMMY SMITH. As I said at the start of Thursday’s Skull Session, Brian Hartline is an animal, constantly exceeding the already-large expectations Buckeye Nation has for wide receiver recruiting and adding yet another five-star wideout on Wednesday.

However, what I did not say Thursday is that Hartline is also an incredible troll, something I learned a few hours after the Skully posted yesterday.

A few minutes after Hartline snatched now-Ohio State commit Jeremiah Smith from Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Opa Locka, Florida, on Wednesday, a distraught commenter on a Miami (FL) message board was beside themselves that Hartline could come into south Florida and snatch Smith desire the 2024 prospect attending high school in the Hurricanes’ backyard.

The following morning, Hartline had a perfect response for the Miami commenter, but of course, it wasn’t on the message boards. Hartline sent his message on Twitter in the most Twitter way possible: a subtweet.

Just an incredible showing from Hartline. First, he secures a five-star receiver from South Florida that was heavily recruited by Miami and its offensive coordinator Josh Gattis –Michigan’s former OC that called Ohio State soft in 2021. Second, he won Twitter for the day with an incredible subtweet of a saddened Hurricanes fan.

It was a great day to be the wide receiver coach at The Ohio State University, and it may be even greater to be a fan of the Buckeyes as they will see a flurry of top receiver commits come to Columbus over the next two years:

Ohio State Wide Receiver Commits
NAME YEAR HT WT STARS RATING
JEREMIAH SMITH 2024 6-3 185 FIVE 0.9982
BRANDON INNISS 2023 6-0 190 FIVE 0.9859
NOAH ROGERS 2023 6-2 195 FOUR 0.9799
CARNELL TATE 2023 6-2 180 FOUR 0.9717
BRYSON RODGERS 2023 6-0 175 FOUR 0.9011

That’s what I call an embarrassment of riches.

It doesn’t get any better than this, folks.

HATE TO SEE THAT. After Michigan’s 45-23 win over Ohio State in The Game this season, a few players for the Wolverines ran around the turf at the Horseshoe with a maize and blue flag flying through the wind. They even planted it on the scarlet Block O at the 50-yard line.

It looked a little something like this:

And now, the Michigan football program has added pictures of that moment to the Schembechler Hall practice facility in Ann Arbor. It looks a little something like this:

Look, I know Michigan has won the last two meetings in the rivalry, and I don’t have much room to comment on the stuff the Wolverines do these days because of that fact, but it’s pretty funny to me how quickly they put up a mural of their win in Ohio Stadium and their win last year in the Big House.

It appears that is what a program does after being dominated for two decades. But what do I know? I’m countin’ down the days until Nov. 25, 2023, because I neeeeeeeeed to see the Buckeyes back on top in The Game. I also wouldn’t mind seeing The Rematch in the national championship, but that’s just me.

ALL-AMERICAN MEN. Ohio State is America’s team. That’s a claim I think most readers at Eleven Warriors would agree with, or maybe not. I don’t know. I also don’t think that claim would go over too well outside of Buckeye Country.

However, I can make this claim comfortably: Ohio State was led by its All-Americans to be one of the best teams in America this year. Here are all of the All-American awards the Buckeyes have received after the regular season:

  • C.J. Stroud: Walter Camp Football Foundation, CBS Sports, AFCA (second team)
  • Marvin Harrison Jr.: AP, Walter Camp Football Foundation, PFF, CBS Sports, The Athletic, Bleacher Report, FWAA, Sporting News, AFCA (first team)
  • Emeka Egbuka: PFF (third team)
  • Paris Johnson Jr.: Walter Camp Football Foundation, The Athletic, Bleacher Report, FWAA, AFCA (first team); CBS Sports, AP (second team); PFF (honorable mention)
  • Dawand Jones: PFF and CBS Sports (first team); AP, Sporting News (second team)
  • Luke Wypler: PFF (third team)
  • Tommy Eichenberg: PFF, Bleacher Report (first team); Walter Camp Football Foundation, CBS Sports, FWAA, AP, Sporting News (second team)
  • Ronnie Hickman: PFF, AP (second team)

As far as the Associated Press All-American honors are concerned – and, to be honest, that’s kind of the only All-American awards that matter to me, I don’t know why and I won’t be taking questions at this time – the Buckeyes lead the way with five recipients: Harrison, Johnson, Jones, Eichenberg and Hickman.

If Ohio State wants to move past Georgia and accomplish its goal of winning a national championship, those five Buckeyes, and players like C.J. Stroud, Miyan Williams, JT Tuimoloau and Zach Harrison, among many others, will need to be at the top of their games.

Actually, everyone will need to be at the top of their games. But I expect these Ohio State players to be at the forefront.

Let’s ride, Buckeye Nation. Bring on the Bulldogs. Ohio Against the World.

Republicans saw the Herschel Walker problem coming a mile away

CNN
 —

The last week of Herschel Walker’s Senate campaign – beset by a report that he paid for a woman he was dating to have an abortion more than a decade ago – has been an utter disaster.

And it’s been made worse by the fact that smart Republican strategists have known for the better part of a year that Walker was a) deeply untested and b) deeply unpredictable as a candidate.

More than a year ago, in response to an Associated Press story detailing Walker’s turbulent past – including reportedly threatening his ex-wife and exaggerating his business successes – Josh Holmes, a longtime confidante to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, was blunt in his assessment of the situation.

“This is about as comprehensive a takedown as I’ve ever read,” tweeted Holmes in July 2021. “My lord.”

And while McConnell stayed silent publicly, he was operating behind the scenes to try to maneuver Walker from his prime position in the Georgia Senate primary.

As CNN reported in August 2021:

“McConnell has suggested to allies that former Georgia senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler should take another look at running again, according to three sources familiar with the matter, after their narrow losses in January flipped the Senate to Democratic control.”

Ultimately those efforts went for naught. And by around this time last year, McConnell had given up – endorsing Walker’s bid. “Herschel is the only one who can unite the party, defeat Senator Warnock, and help us take back the Senate,” McConnell said at the time.

For close observers of McConnell, it was clear then that this was a marriage of convenience – at best.

Walker had already been endorsed by Donald Trump. He was (and is) a celebrity in Georgia due to his football accomplishments. None of the other potential high-profile GOP candidates – like Perdue and Loeffler – ended up running.

McConnell didn’t get to where he is – the longtime leader of Republicans in the Senate – by charging at windmills. He knew that there was no point in standing in Walker’s way because the former football star was going to be the Republican nominee. So, McConnell got on board.

But those initial doubts that led him – and one of his top political consiglieres – to be skeptical of Walker never went away. It was a classic case of, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em,” in action.

Unfortunately for McConnell and Senate Republicans, what’s played out of late was exactly what they were worried about all those months ago. (CNN has not independently verified the allegation against Walker, who has repeatedly denied that he ever paid for an abortion.)

The Point: It’s not clear McConnell had any choice but to get behind Walker. But when he did that, he knew things could end this way. Badly.

Windows 95 went the extra mile to ensure compatibility of SimCity, other games

SimCity Classic worked, with some memory-reading workarounds.”/>
Enlarge / Microsoft wanted people to have zero reasons not to upgrade to Windows 95. That meant making sure SimCity Classic worked, with some memory-reading workarounds.

It’s still possible to learn a lot of interesting things about old operating systems. Sometimes, those things are already documented (on a blog post) that miraculously still exist. One such quirk showed up recently when someone noticed how Microsoft made sure that SimCity and other popular apps worked on Windows 95.

A recent tweet by @Kalyoshika highlights an excerpt from a blog post by Fog Creek Software co-founder, Stack Overflow co-creator, and longtime software blogger Joel Spolsky. The larger post is about chicken-and-egg OS/software appeal and demand. The part that caught the eye of a Hardcore Gaming 101 podcast co-host is how the Windows 3.1 version of SimCity worked on the Windows 95 system. Windows 95 merged MS-DOS and Windows apps, upgraded APIs from 16 to 32-bit, and was hyper-marketed. A popular app like SimCity, which sold more than 5 million copies, needed to work without a hitch.

Spolsky’s post summarizes how SimCity became Windows 95-ready, as he heard it, without input from Maxis or user workarounds.

Jon Ross, who wrote the original version of SimCity for Windows 3.x, told me that he accidentally left a bug in SimCity where he read memory that he had just freed. Yep. It worked fine on Windows 3.x, because the memory never went anywhere. Here’s the amazing part: On beta versions of Windows 95, SimCity wasn’t working in testing. Microsoft tracked down the bug and added specific code to Windows 95 that looks for SimCity. If it finds SimCity running, it runs the memory allocator in a special mode that doesn’t free memory right away. That’s the kind of obsession with backward compatibility that made people willing to upgrade to Windows 95.

Spolsky (in 2000) considers this a credit to Microsoft and an example of how to break the chicken-and-egg problem: “provide a backwards compatibility mode which either delivers a truckload of chickens, or a truckload of eggs, depending on how you look at it, and sit back and rake in the bucks.’

Windows developers may have deserved some sit-back time, seeing the extent of the tweaks they often have to make for individual games and apps in Windows 95. Further in @Kalyoshika’s replies, you can find another example, pulled from the Compatibility Administrator in Windows’ Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). A screenshot from @code_and_beer shows how Windows NT, upon detecting files typically installed with Final Fantasy VII, will implement a fittingly titled compatibility fix: “Win95VersionLie.” Simply telling the game that it’s on Windows 95 seems to fix a major issue with its operation, along with a few other emulation and virtualization tweaks.

Install the Windows ADK and open up the Compatibility Administrator, and you can spy on some of the things Windows does for particular apps to make them work in the System Database section. If it detects files named “Horny.tif” and “bullfrog.sbk”, it updates where Windows 95/98 versions of Dungeon Keeper should put those files in Windows XP and later. Windows has to stop Tom Clancy’s Rainbox Six from accessing the CD drive while it’s already playing a movie or other media, as well as disable Alt+Tab switching while the game is open because the game can’t handle losing focus. And it’s not just older titles; Street Fighter V gets a little tweak to its DirectX implementation to run on some systems.

In 2005, longtime Microsoft staffer and The Old New thing blogger Raymond Chen documented Microsoft’s Windows 95 compatibility obsession. Chen writes that Windows 95’s development manager “took his pick-up truck, drove down to the local Egghead Software store (back when Egghead still existed), and bought one copy of every single PC program in the store.” Everybody was responsible for up to two programs, which they would install, run, and document for bugs. If a staffer finished two, they could come back to grab up to two more. And testers could keep whatever they finished.

Mike Perry, former creative director at Sim empire Maxis (and later EA), noted later that there was, technically, a 32-bit Windows 95 version of Sim City available, as shown by the “Deluxe Edition” bundle of the game. He also states that Ross worked for Microsoft after leaving Maxis, which would further explain why Microsoft was so keen to ensure people could keep building parks in the perfect grid position to improve resident happiness.

Woman who fell to her death after Kenny Chesney concert at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium identified

Colorado authorities have identified the woman who plunged to her death after Kenny Chesney’s Denver concert.

Jimi Goodman, 48, died after falling from an escalator at the Empower Field at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colo. just before 11 p.m on July 30.

Police say Goodman was sitting on the railing before falling. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed to The Post that Goodman’s cause of death was from multiple blunt force injuries. The manner of her death was ruled an accident.

Goodman’s death left the country singer “devastated” as he issued a statement following the sad news.

“I was devastated to learn of the loss of someone after our show,” the “American Kids” hitmaker told the Denver Post in a statement. “There had been so much joy, so much heart coming from the people of Denver last night — and to hear this is heartbreaking.”

“Life is precious. Sharing music brings us together and that love we share makes us so much more. For the lady who came to share that love, there are no words. For her friends and family’s loss, I grieve with them and for them.”

Empower Field at Mile High, where Chesney performed his “Here and Now” tour show, released a statement on Twitter following the tragedy.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the woman involved in the tragic incident that occurred at the end of Saturday’s concert at Empower Field at Mile High,” the statement read.

“There is nothing more important than the safety of our guests, and Stadium Management Company is in communication with the Denver Police Department as it investigates this unfortunate situation.”

Goodman’s death is the third fatal fall to occur at the stadium since 2015.

According to CBS News, Francisco Morales fell one level while he attempted to chase his hat that was blown away in the wind in 2015.

Another fan, Jason Coy, died in Oct. 2016 when he plunged several stories during a Denver Broncos game. Coy’s family sued the stadium and beer vendors before the matter was settled.

320 mile range, MSRP between $45-$66k

After teasing the public with small glimpses since March, General Motors has officially unveiled the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV, including trim details, estimated range, and pricing. In addition to four varying trims, GM is designing a Police Pursuit Vehicle. Here’s what we’ve learned so far.

Quick recap

The public first caught wind of the Chevy Blazer EV at GM’s CES 2022 event. Although the all-electric Silverado was main focus of that presentation, GM CEO Mary Barra did leave the Las Vegas crowd with last surprise at the end.

That’s where we got our first glimpse of the Super Sport (SS) trim of the Blazer – the first performance trim of any EV under the Chevy marque, but that’s about all we learned at the time. This past June, GM offered a more robust tease of its Blazer EV, confirming it would arrive as a 2024 model in the Spring of 2023.

According to a Tweet from Barra, the world would learn more on July 18. Well, here we are and as promised, GM has shared plenty of tasty new details regarding the Blazer EV and all four of its upcoming trims. Here’s a look at three of them to start:

Chevy Blazer EV comes in four trims, plus PPV for the cops

When we’ve covered the limited details of the Blazer EV in the past, we’ve had specific questions pertaining to trim levels, range, whether it’ll be AWD, and of course, how much it will cost. Well GM has answered all those questions and then some in a press release coinciding with a public debut event held in Los Angeles this evening.

Let’s start with the trims themselves. In addition to the SS variant that was originally teased, the Blazer EV will arrive in three additional trims, each offering different motor configurations, ranges, and interior designs. All trims are built upon GM’s Ultium EV platform.

Although the SS is the only model that comes with all-wheel drive standard, it is an available option in two of the three other trims. Here’s how they compare side by side (including price).

Chevy Blazer EV Trim 1LT 2LT RS SS
Wheels 19″ 19″ 21″ 22″
Powertrain (Standard) FWD FWD FWD or
RWD
AWD
AWD available? No Yes Yes –––
GM Estimated Range* 247 mi 293 mi 320 mi 290 mi
Starting MSRP $44,995 $47,595 $51,995 $65,995
* – Dependent on battery pack size (although GM has not shared battery capacity yet)

Although we’ve learned a lot more about the various trims of the Blazer EV, the SS remains the focus of GM’s latest release. With AWD standard propulsion, the Super Sport EV is estimated to deliver 557 horsepower and 648 lb-ft of torque.

It also comes capable with Wide Open Watts (WOW) mode, which is similar to Watts to Freedom mode on the GMC Hummer EV. GM estimates the Blazer SS can sprint 0-60 mph in under four seconds. Here are some more images including a head-up display (HUD):

Other cool features

Chevy also shared that the Blazer EV will be capable of achieving 11.5 kW on Level 2 AC chargers, and 190 kW on DC fast-chargers – equating to about 78 miles of range in ten minutes. That being said, the automaker did not specify which model(s) can achieve those charge rates.

We asked a Chevy for clarification and were told those charging specifics will be revealed at a later date. In the meantime, here are some other cool features to look forward to:

  • Full LED exterior lighting, with choreographed walk-up/walk-away animation on RS and SS
  • Super Cruise hands-free driving technology available on compatible roads
  • ADAS features like Reverse Automatic Braking and Advanced Park Assist
  • LT trims feature a monochromatic appearance
  • RS features a black grill and other black accents
  • SS has unique front grill, two-tone color scheme including a black roof and A-pillars
  • Front lighting on RS and SS conveys the state of charge while the EV is plugged in
  • Tailgate can open hands-free when the key fob is recognized by the sensors at the rear
  • Hands-free start – the driver simply pushes the brake pedal after closing the door

Despite being on the Ultium platform and part of GM’s Ultium Charge 360 network, Chevy gave zero mention of plug and charge capabilities on the Blazer in the press release. We asked GM to clarify and learned that the all-electric Blazer will in fact have Plug and Charge capabilities. Phew!

You may soon get pulled over by police driving a Chevy Blazer EV

In addition to the “civilian” models of the all-electric Blazer outlined above, Chevy is developing a model specifically designed for the officers in blue called a Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV). Per the release:

Based on the Blazer SS model, the Blazer EV PPV will have the largest Ultium battery in the lineup and will be available in rear wheel drive or with a dual motor all-wheel drive system. The PPV will use the Blazer SS high performance front Brembo brakes to help ensure short stopping distances. The purpose-built Blazer EV PPV model features a police specific interior designed for police officers with ample room to accommodate emergency equipment and gear.

Chevrolet also relayed its available trims will offer different range and design catered to fleet and commercial customers, so the Blazer EV appears to be quite versatile already. Let’s have a look inside, shall we?

Comparison (or lack thereof) of the interiors of the Chevy Blazer 1LT and 2LT

Interior

No matter what trim level you decide upon, the interior of the Blazer EV features a 17.7-inch-diagonal touchscreen, an 11-inch-diagonal Driver Information Center in the instrument cluster, and LED lighting throughout. From there however, the interiors change quite a bit as you move up the trim hierarchy.

As you can see in the image comparison above, there is virtually no variation between the 1LT and 2LT trims of the Blazer EV, perhaps just slightly different seat materials. Look below. When you get to the RS, you’ll see huge differences, and even more variations when you get the the SS interior.

The RS interior (left) vs. the SS (Right)

Below are some additional interior features:

  • Two-row layout and flat floor provide ample space and storage options
  • Standard ambient lighting with personalization function on RS and SS trims
  • Unique RS and SS trim and design cues
    • Blue and red contrasting stitching on the RS
    • Sueded microfiber seating on the SS, Adrenaline Red seating surfaces, and available Argon Orange accents
  • Heated and ventilated front seats on RS and SS, along with heated rear outboard seating positions that are standard on SS and available on RS as an add-on
  • Heated steering wheel on RS and SS
  • Sculpted vents inspired by turbines

Chevy Blazer EV reservations and delivery timelines

We’ve already shared “how much,” but naturally your next question has to be, “when?” To cap things off, Chevy has shared sales/production timelines for the Blazer EV as follows:

The start of sales kick off in the summer of 2023 with the 2LT ($47,595) and RS ($51,995) trims. The SS ($65,995) will follow later in 2023, followed by the 1LT ($44,995) and PPV in Q1 of 2024.

The electrified Blazers will be built at GM’s production facility in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico where the combustion versions of the Blazer are currently manufactured. Blazer EV reservations are now available on Chevy’s website. Want more Blazer? Check out Chevy’s detailed video below:
