Daytona 500 2021 Results: Michael McDowell Wins After Avoiding Final-Lap Crash | Bleacher Report

Chris O’Meara/Associated Press

Michael McDowell won the first Daytona 500 of his career and prevented history in the process.

It appeared as if Denny Hamlin was going to become the first NASCAR driver in the sport’s history to win the Daytona 500 three years in a row when he won the first two stages and held a lead heading into the stretch run, but Joey Logano and others passed him with 25 laps remaining to set up a dramatic finish.

Hamlin joined Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough and Sterling Marlin as back-to-back champions at Daytona International Speedway who failed to three-peat in the Great American Race.

McDowell earned the checkered flag at the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season-opening event Sunday in stunning fashion, as it appeared as if Logano were going to win on the last lap. However, Logano and Brad Keselowski collided on the final push, which led to a multi-car pileup.

NASCAR reviewed the situation and determined McDowell was the winner, which was the first Cup Series victory of his career.

Here is a look at the top five, per NASCAR.com:

1. Michael McDowell

2. Chase Elliott

3. Austin Dillon

4. Kevin Harvick

5. Denny Hamlin

It was a head-turning finish, but it didn’t take long for chaos to reign in this year’s edition of the famed race.

Christopher Bell pushed Aric Almirola on Lap 15, which sparked a massive 16-car pileup that knocked out a number of contenders, including pole-sitter Alex Bowman. Martin Truex Jr., Jamie McMurray, William Byron, Matt Dibenedetto, Ryan Blaney, Tyler Reddick and Ryan Newman were among those involved in the wreck.

What’s more, a weather delay that lasted nearly six hours shortly followed.

Once the weather delay ended, Almirola, Bowman, Blaney, Newman, Derrike Cope, Daniel Suarez, David Ragan and Erik Jones were all out of the race. Chris Buescher, DiBenedetto and Anthony Alfredo were also ruled out as the race started, and Quin Houff ran into trouble during Stage 1 and was eliminated.

Despite all of the drama, the status quo prevailed in the early going when Hamlin won Stage 1 and earned the corresponding playoff point.

It was fitting considering he was directly involved in two of the biggest storylines coming into the race. Not only was he going for a three-peat, but he and Michael Jordan are also the co-owners of 23XI Racing with Bubba Wallace behind the wheel.

Wallace, who is the only Black full-time driver at the sport’s top level and sparked progress by successfully calling for NASCAR to ban the display of Confederate flags at racetracks last year, was also in the top 10 after Stage 1.

Wallace nearly won Stage 2 in a battle with Hamlin and Kevin Harvick, but the No. 11 car held him off and won yet another playoff point. It was a testament to Hamlin’s ability, especially in Daytona, that he maneuvered his way back to the front of the pack on the final lap of the stage.

The stage was defined by concerns about visibility in the fog; a wreck involving Bell, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kyle Larson; and Kaz Grala’s right rear tire catching on fire. Larson’s car suffered right-side damage and a flat tire, while Grala’s car needed fire extinguishers.

There wasn’t much drama in the early portion of Stage 3 with Hamlin cruising so much he asked his team how many laps he led.

However, he lost that lead to Logano and others with 25 laps remaining and was never able to make up the gap. McDowell was the ultimate benefactor and earned the first Cup Series victory of his career.

Pennsylvania man Michael John Lopatic assaulted police officer, stole another’s bodycam during Capitol riot, prosecutors say

Court records show that Lopatic, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is charged with assaulting a police officer, civil disorder, entering restricted grounds, physical violence on restricted grounds, and disorderly conduct in a restrictive building.

The criminal complaint and FBI affidavit filed against Lopatic remain under seal, but a motion for pretrial detention is shedding light on the government’s case against him.

According to the motion, an officer with the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) was trying to rescue another officer from rioters outside the Capitol when Lopatic “emerged from the crowd, climbed over a handrail, and charged” at the officer.

In describing the assault, which was caught on police bodycam video, prosecutors say that Lopatic, “assaulted (the officer) by continuously punching him in the head,” and that, “at one point, the defendant grabbed (the officer) by the head and appeared to hit him with an uppercut.”

Prosecutors also said that after the alleged assault, Lopatic was seen stealing “the body worn camera of another MPD officer and later destroyed it.” In stealing the bodycam, prosecutors said that Lopatic had to break through a “human shield” of “protesters trying to protect (the officer) from the violent mob.”

Lopatic told FBI agents that he stole the bodycam and got rid of it while traveling back home from the riot, according to the motion.

In the months and weeks leading up to the riot, prosecutors also said that Lopatic posted, “threatening messages about elected leaders in Washington.” Lopatic allegedly posted a number of photos of the birds he shot while hunting, writing in the captions that he’d named them after Democratic politicians.

“I got a double today,” Lopatic allegedly wrote, according to a screenshot in the motion. “Two shots, two kills. Both head shots. I got a rooster and a hen. I named them Joe and Kamala.”

They also say he wrote on January 1, advocating for others to “ASSEMBLE ON THE CAPITAL JANUARY 6TH, 2021. UNITED WE STAND, GO FORTH AND WE FIGHT.”

CNN reached out to Lopatic’s lawyer who declined to comment on the charges. Court records show that a federal judge granted the prosecutor’s motion for the pretrial detention of Lopatic.

Elton John and Michael Caine star in video encouraging Brits to get vaccine

The legendary British singer tries out a Michael Caine impression but fails to impress the casting team — before Caine himself makes a cameo. Both celebrities have already been vaccinated against the coronavirus, the NHS said.

Their appeal for more Brits to get inoculated comes as the UK looks to broaden its rollout. Britain has already vaccinated more than 12 million people with at least one dose, and is now asking people aged 70 and over in England who haven’t been vaccinated to book an appointment.

“I wanted to take part in this film to help show people the benefits of getting vaccinated and how it helps protect ourselves and the people we love,” John said. “So, I hope we can all come together and do our bit in the fight against this wretched disease.”

In the video, the 73-year-old sings his 1980s hit “I’m Still Standing” after pretending to receive a shot. The spoof also sees Caine, 87, tell viewers the vaccine doesn’t hurt — before adding his trademark phrase, “Not many people know that.”

Chief Executive of NHS England Simon Stevens said that vaccine uptake in older populations had been very high, and that the campaign was a way to encourage others who can take up the vaccine to do so.

“Well over nine out of ten people aged 75 and over have already taken up the offer of their NHS Covid vaccination, and now we want to encourage everyone in the high priority groups to do so,” Stevens said.

“That’s why we’re grateful to Sir Elton and Sir Michael for helping the NHS promote vaccine uptake,” he added.

The government has pledged to offer a vaccine to everyone in its four highest-risk groups by mid-February.

Despite the strong uptake, community protection can only be achieved when a vast majority of the population has been vaccinated, and scientists have warned of the challenges posed by misinformation and vaccine hesitancy in achieving that milestone.

Stormy Daniels to Michael Cohen: Fox News movie brought back memory of sex with Trump | US news

Stormy Daniels has said she could not remember key details of the sexual liaison she claims to have had with Donald Trump, until seeing a film about Roger Ailes’ sexual harassment of women at Fox News prompted her to remember.

“I went to see that movie Bombshell,” she said, “and suddenly it just came back.”

Daniels, an adult film star and director whose birth name is Stephanie Clifford, was speaking to Michael Cohen on the former Trump lawyer’s podcast, Mea Culpa, made by Audio Up Media. Excerpts were shared with the Guardian.

Daniels also described Trump “doing his best yet horrifyingly disturbing impression of Burt Reynolds”, on a bed, clad only in his underwear.

Daniels claims to have had sex with Trump in Nevada in 2006. He denies it, but a $130,000 hush money payment to Daniels reimbursed by Trump contributed to Cohen’s downfall in 2018.

Trump’s longtime fixer was jailed for tax fraud, lying to Congress and violations of campaign finance law. He cooperated with investigators and published a book, Disloyal, while completing a three-year sentence.

The payment to Daniels, and Cohen’s role in a payment to another woman, Playboy model Karen McDougal, during the 2016 election, are at the centre of ongoing investigations. Stripped of the protections of office, Trump is vulnerable to prosecution.

Daniels’ appearance on Cohen’s podcast marks a rapprochement between the two. After Cohen orchestrated Trump’s attempts to keep Daniels quiet, Daniels had harsh words for Cohen in her own book, Full Disclosure.

Daniels called Cohen a “dim bulb” and “a complete fucking moron”. She also detailed what she claims was a threat to her safety and that of her daughter, allegedly from Trump. In 2018, she said: “It never occurred to any of these men that I would someday have a voice.”

Cohen is now a vocal critic of his old boss. Daniels has remained a thorn in Trump’s side. She and Cohen appear to have realised their enemy’s enemy is their friend.

“Both of our stories will be forever linked with Donald Trump, but also with one another,” Cohen said. “Thanks for giving me a second chance.”

The details of Daniels’ alleged liaison with Trump at a charity golf event in Lake Tahoe in 2006 are well known, not least thanks to her book, which the Guardian first reported.

“I couldn’t remember,” she told Cohen, “how I got from standing in that bathroom doorway to underneath him on the bed, like I couldn’t remember how my dress came off or how my shoes got off, because I know I took my shoes off because I clearly remember putting them back on and they were buckled, like they’re really gold strappy heels that were not easy to, you know, come off.

“And I just, there’s like 60 seconds where I just had no recollection of it and it’s not in the book, and nobody really wanted to ask about it. They just wanted to know the details of what his appendage, or lack of appendage, looked like. And I was like, it really bothered me for like years, like, I definitely wasn’t drinking so I’m like why don’t I remember this.

“And I’ll never forget this moment. I went to see that movie Bombshell, and suddenly it just came back.”

Bombshell was directed by Jay Roach, starred Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie and was released in 2019. It told the story of the downfall of Roger Ailes, chief executive of Fox News and a key Trump ally, over sexual harassment.

Trump denies accusations of sexual harassment and assault by multiple women. Shortly before the 2016 election, Fox News killed a story about Trump and Daniels. Ailes resigned in July that year and died the following May.

Daniels’ own case against Trump for defamation is heading for the supreme court. She told Cohen: “I’ve already lost everything, so I’m taking it all the way.”

Of Lake Tahoe in 2006, Daniels also told Cohen she now remembered thinking, ‘Oh fuck, how do I get myself in this situation. And I remember even thinking I could definitely fight his fat ass, I can definitely outrun him. There’s a bodyguard at the door. But I wasn’t threatened, I was not physically threatened.

“And then so I tried to sidestep … I was like, trying to remember really quickly, where did I leave my purse, like I gotta get out of here. And I went to sidestep and he stood up off the bed and was like ‘This is your chance.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ and he was like, ‘You need to show me how bad you want it or do you just want to go back to the trailer park.’”

Daniels has said Trump told her he would get her a slot on The Apprentice, the reality TV show for which he was then most famous. At the time of the alleged encounter, Trump’s third wife, Melania Trump, had recently given birth to their son, Barron.

Daniels told Cohen she went to the bathroom, then “was genuinely like startled to see him waiting” when she came out.

“I just froze,” she said, “and I didn’t know what to say. He had stripped down to his underwear and was perched on the bed doing his best yet horrifyingly disturbing impression of Burt Reynolds.”

She “didn’t say anything for years”, she said, “because I didn’t remember.” Now the star of a ghost-hunting reality TV show, Spooky Babes, she added: “I’ve been face to face with evil in the most intimate way. Demons don’t scare me anymore.”

Daniels has described what she says happened next. Speaking to CBS 60 Minutes in 2018, she said: “And I was like, ‘Ugh, here we go.’ And I just felt like maybe it was sort of … I had it coming for making a bad decision for going to someone’s room alone.”

The interviewer, Anderson Cooper, said: “And you had sex with him.”

“Yes,” Daniels said.

Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan has welcomed her first child, a son, with her estranged husband Michael Kopech, according to E! News.

While the duo have yet to confirm the exact birth date or baby boy’s name, the 28-year-old CW star and pro baseball player, 24, are ‘both thrilled’ about their bundle of joy’s recent arrival.

Over the summer, they announced their exciting baby news with an emotional Instagram post with photos from her gender reveal party, a snapshot of her positive pregnancy test and a video from her very first ultrasound.

Though she wanted to be the ‘first to share the news’, Morgan emphasized that she intends to ‘keep this chapter of [her] life private.’

‘I am overjoyed to be welcoming my baby boy into the world this January. It’s almost like everything I thought mattered in this life has completely changed.. We’re here for such a greater purpose and life is so precious,’ she gushed.

Bumping along: Morgan posted on Instagram to announce she was on maternity leave last year, writing she is so ‘proud’ of her body for allowing her to ‘work almost 9 months preggo’

At her caption’s midway point, Vanessa directly addressed her unborn son and marveled at how much impact he has already had on her life.

The first-time mother, later, revealed she found out she was pregnant on May 20 – a month before her spouse filed for divorce in Morris County in his home state of Texas on June 19, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Morgan’s rep confirmed to the Illinois newspaper that ‘Michael is the father’ but that didn’t stop him from ending their five-month marriage.

It’s a boy:  Morgan and Kopech announced they were expecting a little boy over the summer

Due in January: In an emotional post shared with her Instagram followers, the 28-year-old star of Riverdale revealed that she would be ‘welcoming [her] baby boy into the world this January’

After a six-month engagement and a year of dating, Kopech and the 5ft2in brunette tied the knot at their ‘fairytale’ wedding on January 4 at Florida’s Historic Walton House in front of 35 guests.

Vanessa previously dated NHL player Nathan MacKinnon (2014-2016) and Degrassi: The Next Generation alum Munro Chambers (2008).

Meanwhile, the 6ft3in athlete famously dated Don’t Be Tardy reality star Brielle Biermann, but they ended their two-year, long-distance relationship in March 2018.

Journey: Along with her lengthy caption, Morgan included photos from her gender reveal party, a snapshot of her positive pregnancy test, and a video from her first ultrasound

Made with love: ‘Lil one you were made with so much love & already exude a light so strong it warms my belly. Thank you God for this blessing ☺️ I’m just so happy & can’t wait to dedicate everyday to being the best mommy I can be,’ wrote Morgan on Instagram

Morning Report: Dana White says he can’t remember a better UFC debut than Michael Chandler’s at UFC 257

The bulk of the headlines coming out of UFC 257 will center around Dustin Poirier’s upset victory over Conor McGregor (as well they should) but in the co-main event, Michael Chandler did everything he could to steal the show. And though he might not have quite pulled it off, Chandler did impress his new boss, Dana White.

The former three-time Bellator lightweight champion signed with the UFC last year and made his promotional debut to much fanfare against Dan Hooker on Saturday. Going into the fight, much was made of the jump in competition between Bellator and the UFC and even Chandler himself called Hooker one of his toughest matchups in the organization, one he took because Hooker was the only top guy who would even agree to fight him. But when the cage door closed on Saturday, Chandler made quick work of Hooker, knocking him out halfway through the first round. Afterwards, Chandler jumped on the microphone and cut a promo on the two main event fighters and current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. It was an all-around sensational debut and one that got Dana White’s attention.

“When guys come into the UFC for the first time, they usually have a rough first time on the big stage,” White said at the post-fight press conference. “He didn’t. He came out and it almost seemed like Hooker froze in that first round. Chandler was just all over him and put on an incredible performance. Listen, man, when you get the platform we had tonight, you make the most of it, and that kid did. Some people did tonight and some didn’t.”

So impressive was Chandler’s debut that immediately afterwards the MMA community began questioning if it was the most impressive one in UFC history and when asked the question, White struggled to think of one better.

“That kid fought like he’s been here for years,” White said. “So yeah, off the top of my head I can’t remember a better one.”

Whether or not it’s the best debut ever is a matter of opinion but Chandler has certainly put himself in the conversation with guys like Anderson Silva, Junior dos Santos, Ronda rousey, and Joe Lauzon. It wasn’t, however, perfect. At least not to White.

Following his victory, Chandler climbed to the top of the cage and performed a backflip off of it, nearly missing his landing and stumbling across the cage.

It was a celebration that White lamented when discussing Chandler’s debut.

“Do you guys hate the backflips as much as I hate the backflips?” White asked, unprompted. “They just f*cking — the kid gets his fight in the UFC and then does a backflip that looks like it’s gonna blow out both f*cking ankles, knees, and his spine. I just, I don’t get the backflip thing and I don’t like it. Somebody’s gonna get f*cking hurt doing that.”

Fortunately, Chandler did not injure himself and now will look to build off the momentum of his sensational debut, either with a title shot or another big fight. Now that he has a top-10 win inside the UFC, there will be no shortage of options.

After UFC 257 triumph, Dustin Poirier guarantees ‘I won’t be fighting Michael Chandler’ next

The easiest matchup to make after UFC 257 appeared to be Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler, after both emerged from Saturday’s pay-per-view event with impressive knockout victories.

But Poirier doesn’t believe they’re in the same category, and he’s not keen on fighting the former Bellator champ after stopping Conor McGregor in the pay-per-view headliner.

“I can guarantee I won’t be fighting Michael Chandler,” Poirier told reporters, including MMA Fighting, at the UFC 257 post-fight press conference. “They can do whatever they want with the division. I don’t really care. If something makes sense, then we’ll do it.”

UFC 257 was initially framed by UFC President Dana White as something of an audition for the top lightweights, with Poirier vs. McGregor and Chandler vs. Dan Hooker competing to impress current UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Chandler certainly did his part, stopping Hooker in the first round with a ferocious display of striking. But with Nurmagomedov looking less and less likely to reverse a decision to retire from the sport, Poirier thinks he should be considered the champ.

Of course, Poirier doesn’t actually hold the belt. But he should be fighting for it very soon, and if the UFC is doing things the way he believes they should be done, he said, then the person standing across from him next will be someone who’s earned the opportunity.

“I’ve just been putting in work,” he said. “That’s why I’m sitting here feeling like I can talk about it, because I’ve been in the division and the UFC for a long time, fighting the best of the best of the best.

“No disrespect to [Chandler], he seems like a good husband, a good father, he speaks well, has a lot of respect, carries himself very well. It’s not a knock against him. It’s just my feelings toward the division and the sport. I lost to Khabib, I came out and put on a ‘Fight of the Year’ for you guys, got my hand raised against a top-five opponent after that. Then I come in there and Khabib doesn’t want to come back, then I knock out one of the biggest fights you can get. I knock this guy out, too.

“Khabib reiterates he doesn’t want to fight any more – dude, I’m the champ. I’m not going to fight, some – and like I said, respect to Chandler – a new guy to the UFC who just beat a guy that’s coming off a loss that I just beat for the belt. That’s not exciting to me.”

This past June, Poirier bested Hooker by decision to rebound after a loss to Nurmagomedov in a title-unifier. A candidate more appealing to him was Charles Oliveira, who’s won his past eight fights and most recently outpointed ex-interim champ Tony Ferguson in a commanding performance.

“I think he has more [of a case for the title shot],” Poirier said. “I’ve been watching that guy for 10 years in the UFC, two different weight classes. He’s fought the best of the best, over and over again. And, he’s been knocked down and gotten up, and he’s proven what MMA and perseverance is. I respect that. Not that I don’t respect Michael Chandler. I just think there’s more work for him to do than beat a guy I just beat.”

Oliveira was one of two names broached for the title shot, the other being Justin Gaethje, who, like Poirier, lost a bid to unify the belts. Before that, however, Gaethje was stopped by “The Diamond” in a brutal bout.

Asked whether Oliveira or Gaethje had a better claim to the title shot, Poirier chose the Brazilian.

“Just because he’s never had the opportunity,” Poirier said. “Gaethje just came out here and got beat, as I did. Not a knock on Gaethje, but he lost. I think Oliviera, probably, or let them fight to see who gets it.”

Poirier will ultimately see what the UFC has in store for him after getting some rest and relaxation. He put a huge feather in his cap by beating McGregor, the UFC’s biggest box office star and a former two-division champion. The next fight he takes has to be one he can justify as a veteran who’s earned his keep.
