Nicklaus Children’s Hospital offers COVID-19 vaccines for teens, young adults

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Floridians ages 16-21 with medical conditions that make them particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 can sign up to get vaccines at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital starting next week, the Miami-Dade facility announced Friday.

Doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be available to people of that age who are “currently under the care of physicians or specialists for medical conditions identified by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as posing an increased risk for severe illness associated with COVID-19,” Nicklaus said in a news release.

Appointment requests can be submitted at Nicklauschildrens.org/Covid19Vaccine beginning Monday, March 8.

Candidates will need to provide the Florida COVID-19 Determination of Extreme Vulnerability form completed by their doctor.

The hospital says it has already vaccinated 500 eligible patients “through outreach to other area hospitals and health systems, pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists in Florida that resulted in hundreds of referrals for vaccine appointments.”

Dr. Marcos Mestre, Nicklaus’ chief medical officer, says that of the 700+ doses they’ve given to those patients “we haven’t seen any complications of it.”

The expansion to allow online signups from the public comes after the hospital recently received an additional allotment of the Pfizer shots.

“While most children are only mildly affected by COVID-19, those with complex conditions may be at risk of severe illness if they contract the virus,” Nicklaus Children’s Health System President and CEO Matthew A. Love said in a statement. “We are honored to be able to offer the vaccine to support the care of vulnerable children in Florida.”

Conditions that increase risk, as identified by the CDC, include asthma (moderate to severe), cancer, cerebrovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, diabetes (type 1 or 2), Down syndrome, heart conditions, hypertension, immunocompromised conditions, liver disease, neurologic conditions, obesity, pulmonary fibrosis, sickle cell disease or thalassemia.

Diego Diaz, 18, has cystic fibrosis and just got his second dose earlier this week through Nicklaus.

“More than grateful,” he said. “I hope that other hospitals take note and start doing the same, because I really think that we should be prioritizing not just a certain age group but a demographic that’s mostly at risk.”

Diaz added: “It’s always a worry that maybe there’s somebody that’s next to you that has it, maybe somebody you pass by might have COVID, so it’s always scary to go outside.”

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is authorized for use by people 16 and older. (Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are authorized for 18+.)

There is limited data on how the vaccine affects the pediatric population, but Mestre said studies are ongoing for patients 12-16 years old and “hopefully by the end of the year we’ll have a vaccine available for them as well.”

Pfizer and Moderna expect to start studies on children 11 and younger later this year, as researchers further examine if the shots are safe for younger patients.

At a vaccination site in Miami, some wonder whether to choose newly approved Johnson & Johnson vaccine or Pfizer one

Made by Janssen, J&J’s vaccine arm, the vaccine is safe and effective, and it’s considered flexible. It’s a single dose, and it doesn’t require special storage. The vaccine is authorized for people ages 18 and older.

However, there has been concern that because the public has heard that the shot is only 72% protective in the US, and the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines are about 95% protective, some will think this is a “second class” vaccine. Experts say those numbers are highly misleading — and urge people to take whatever shot is first available to them.

Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order this week that expanded access to the vaccine to people 50 and over who are K-12 school personnel, firefighters and law enforcement officers.
So far, more than 3.1 million Floridians have received one or both doses of a vaccine, according to state records. An overwhelming majority of the recipients have been seniors age 65 and older.

Florida’s four FEMA-supported vaccination sites — in Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville and Miami — are now allowing people to choose between J&J and Pfizer, according to Jason Mahon, communications director for the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

“Giving them the choice was important,” Mahon told CNN.

Those at the Miami-Dade College vaccination site on Wednesday mulled over their options before deciding which shot they wanted administered.

Some said they chose the J&J vaccine because they wanted to get one shot rather than two (which both Pfizer and Moderna require).

Lolita White told CNN that she is “afraid of needles” and therefore can “only do this once.”

“It was liberating,” she said about getting the J&J vaccine. “But it was very scary at the same time because … I’m definitely afraid of needles. The people in there were very supportive. The guy who gave me the shot … said don’t be afraid.”

Despite J&J’s lower efficacy, White said she was comforted to learn that J&J’s research included protection against the new variants of the Covid-19 virus.

Guillermo Muñoz said he trusts that all the vaccines are effective — but he also preferred getting the J&J vaccine because it required one dose.

“I want to make sure that I’m protected and I want to make sure that, you know, that we protect others,” Muñoz told CNN. “The quicker we reach herd immunity, the quicker we will be able to go back to as normal a life as we possibly can.”

Others said they prefer Pfizer — citing various reasons, including that it’s been available longer.

“I just don’t know much about it (J&J vaccine), so I would rather go with something that’s well known,” Rocio Mendez told CNN.

Ruth Watkins also opted for Pfizer — she said she believes in the company so much that she decided to invest in it.

“I don’t choose to buy Johnson & Johnson products and haven’t for a really long time,” Watkins told CNN. “And Pfizer was just a good choice.”

Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, urged Americans to take any of the three “highly efficacious” coronavirus vaccines now available to them and not delay getting one vaccine over another.

“If I were not vaccinated now and I had a choice of getting a J&J vaccine now or waiting for another vaccine, I would take whatever vaccine would be available to me as quickly as possible for the simple reason of what I said a moment ago,” he told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” on Sunday.

“We want to get as many people vaccinated as quickly and expeditiously as possible.”

Patricia Gibbs, who got the Pfizer booster shot on Wednesday, echoed Fauci’s opinion.

“We all need to get this shot to protect everybody,” Gibbs said.

CNN’s Pete Muntean, Greg Wallace, Maggie Fox, Chandelis Duster and Jen Christensen contributed to this report.

Miami mayor says Elon Musk will tunnel under the city for just $30 million

Elon Musk told Miami’s mayor Friday that The Boring Company could dig a two-mile tunnel under the city for as little as $30 million — a fraction of the $1 billion price tag once quoted by local transit officials. Musk also told the Mayor that The Boring Company could complete the job in six months, versus the original four year estimate.

Mayor Francis Suarez shared these details about his “wonderful call” with Musk in a video posted to Twitter. “He’s focused on trying to deliver a project that will have the maximum utility for our residents for the least amount of money,” Suarez said. “The order of magnitude in terms of savings is significant.”

Musk first tweeted about wanting to tunnel under Miami on January 18th. “Cars & trucks stuck in traffic generate megatons of toxic gases & particulate, but @boringcompany road tunnels under Miami would solve traffic & be an example to the world,” he wrote. Musk said in the tweet that he had already spoken to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis about the idea. “If Governor & Mayor want this done, we will do it.”

Suarez said Friday that he will speak to DeSantis and the mayor of Miami-Dade county. “I think we have a unique opportunity to create a signature project not just for Miami, but for the world,” he said.

Tunneling under Miami is not easy because the city is built on limestone, which is spongey. That hurdle is one reason for the sky-high price tag quoted in 2018. It also helped drive up the price of a tunnel under the Port of Miami, which was less than a mile but still cost around $700 million.

The Miami Herald reported Friday that the limestone bedrock and the impact of rising sea levels were among the talking points for the call, though it’s unclear to what extent these items were discussed. Musk has previously talked about digging tunnels as deep underground as skyscrapers are tall.

Musk started The Boring Company in 2016, and has started a handful of projects around the country in the years since. The purpose and scope of the tunnels has changed a bit over that time. These days, the company is trying to make a transportation service that uses Teslas traveling through the tunnels. The first commercial service is nearing completion underneath the Las Vegas Convention Center, though The Boring Company recently announced a massive city-wide expansion that would service the Strip and the airport. The company is also in negotiations for a tunnel in San Bernardino County, California.

Other attempts have not gone so well, like a failed project in Chicago and a canceled tunnel in West Los Angeles.

Serena Williams Shows Off Her Miami Home, Kaws Elmo Chair, Clear Piano

Screenshot: Youtube

Serena Williams is Architectural Digest’s new cover star. In the feature, written by former Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Elaine Welteroth, Williams walks AD through her Miami enclave, designed by sister Venus’s design firm V Starr. It’s a lot.

There’s a karaoke room, and textured rock walls, and a dining room covered in over a dozen brass pendant lamps of all shapes and sizes. The house is overflowing with color and art and trophies, but the room which most caught my eye was her office. In it are two chairs, both pink. One is a modest office-model chair. The other is, quite surprisingly, a gamer chair. First made famous amongst PC gamers for their racecar-like design—legend has it the early models were made by a racing car company—these days, they are most popularly seen occupied by famous Twitch streamers, with the cash to dish out for them. It would appear that Serena’s model is only $200, for any interested.

Does Serena Williams game?

Yes, actually. She recently starred in a Nintendo Switch advertisement over the holidays, and also released a convoluted Snapchat game with Gatorade back in 2016. But in that office in particular, when she has a whole suite of comfy, cozy rooms to kick back in with Super Mario Bros.? Probably not.

The chair is just comfortable!

But I am also one of a very few people that might actually feel some sort of emotion about Serena Williams’ gamer chair, so here are the other highlights from the house tour.

This is her karaoke room, complete with instruments and a bar.

Screenshot: Youtube

My personal favorite room is the living room, which she calls the gallery, where all the art is. There’s a dead Elmo armchair from KAWS, and a Radcliffe Bailey wall mural that features actual moon rocks. All things most people decorate a living room with.

Screenshot: Youtube

Another stand-out piece in her gallery is a clear Wurlitzer piano, which she bought because she wanted a piano for her daughter to play, “but didn’t want it to be so heavy.” It’s so expensive that I couldn’t even find a price for it online.

Screenshot: Youtube

She also has a trophy room, because of course.

The rest of her house is hidden behind the magazine’s paywall, but she is gracious enough to leave those of us without Architectural Digest subscriptions with a closing shot of her concealed bookcase door.

Jennifer Lopez hits the gym in Miami with a new souvenir after Biden inauguration performance

Jennifer Lopez heads straight back to the gym in Miami after performing at Biden’s inauguration… and shows off a sparkly souvenir from the event

Jennifer Lopez had the distinct honor of performing at President Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday in Washington D.C.

On Thursday the 51-year-old megastar wasted no time to get back to her usual routine as she was seen hitting up the gym in Miami.

A new souvenir in hand to commemorate the monumental day in America, Lopez was seen walking with a rhinestone tumbler that read #Inauguration2021 as she flashed her enviable curves.

Back to the grind: Jennifer Lopez, 51, hits the gym in Miami with a sparkly new souvenir after stellar performance at Biden’s inauguration where she stunned in Chanel

A 360 from yesterday’s pristine white Chanel getup, Lopez sported black leggings and a white long sleeve shirt with a white sports bra underneath.

Ditching the glam for a more casual look, she tossed her hair up in a messy top knot and flexed a fresh pair of black sneakers.

Oversized sunglasses and a sparkly face mask, she added a touch of glitz to match her new go-to hydrating cup.

Patriotic performance: The megastar performed a medley of songs in DC on Wednesday, tossing in a line from her 2000 song Let’s Get Loud in addition to some more patriotic tunes

Lopez performed a medley of songs in D.C. as she belted, This Land Is Your Land and America the Beautiful, before casually tossing in a line from her 2000 hit song Let’s Get Loud.

An emotional JLo took the stage at the Capitol for her take on the patriotic ballads, even reciting the last line of America the Beautiful in Spanish, before surprising the crowd with the nod to her own song.

Twitter was quick to light up about the decision to slip it into the medley as it became one of the most talked about parts of the inauguration on social media next to the viral Bernie Sanders meme trend.

A diehard supporter of the Biden campaign alongside fiance Alex Rodriguez, the pair spoke with the now President about the importance of the Latino vote during an Instagram live in October.

Longtime supporter: JLo and A-Rod threw their support behind Biden from an early point, even chatting with the now President and wife Dr. Jill Biden on an Instagram live in October to discuss the Latino vote

Blinged out: Seen on most gym occasions with a jeweled tumbler that has her initials, Lopez has now upgraded to one with a Presidential seal of approval

After President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn in to office, Lopez was seen having many-a ‘swoon’ moments as she walked by them prior to her performance.

In addition to Lopez, other performers included Lady Gaga, Garth Brooks and 22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman who led the daytime festivities.

On Thursday a still shaken JLo posted a montage of footage from the inauguration set to parts of her medley as she wrote, ‘Unity is the path forward.’

Making her voice heard: For her medley of songs she stunned in  head to toe white Chanel, topping the look off with a white beret and soft billowy curls

Emotional: Walking to perform JLo was seen getting a bit choked up as she walked past President Biden and Vice President Harris

Rodriguez gushed that he was ‘so proud of Jen’ as the power couple posed for some incredible shots on the steps of the Capitol.

Once night fell on inauguration, Katy Perry, John Legend, Foo Fighters and Demi Lovato – to name a few – put on stellar performances as part of the Celebrating America special.

On Tuesday evening, Jennifer was seen posing with members of the military stationed around DC for a selfie as she wrote:

‘What an honor to spend a few moments with these brave men and women. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. I honor you today and everyday.’

Making history: Taking pause for a photo op on such a monumental day, she posed in Rodriguez’s arms ahead of her performance as she savored the incredible moment
