‘We threw ourselves to the floor’: Mexican passenger plane caught in cartel crossfire

MEXICO CITY, Jan 5 (Reuters) – “That’s an attack plane, Dad,” said one of David Tellez’s young children as they spotted Mexican military aircraft touching down alongside their Aeromexico passenger plane early on Thursday.

Then the gunfire began.

“As we were accelerating for take-off, we heard gunshots very close to the plane, and that’s when we all threw ourselves to the floor,” Tellez said after the incident in the northern city of Culiacan.

Violence broke out on Thursday throughout Culiacan after the arrest of Ovidio Guzman, the son of the notorious drug lord known as El Chapo, and a senior member of the Sinaloa cartel.

Aeromexico said nobody on Tellez’s flight had been hurt. The Culiacan airport closed shortly after, as security forces patrolled the city, which was strewn with burned vehicles, attempting to contain the violent backlash.

Tellez, 42, was traveling with his wife and children, aged 7, 4 and 1, after spending Christmas with family.

He told Reuters he had reached the airport for his 8:24 a.m. flight without incident, despite encountering road blockades set up after overnight shootouts. Although Guzman’s arrest had not yet been confirmed, nervous security guards urged travelers to enter quickly.

“Authorities were not saying anything,” he said by phone.

Tellez hid in an airport bathroom with his family after hearing that gang members were in the airport. The rumor turned out to be false, and the Aeromexico travelers boarded quickly.

Yet, just as flight AM165 to Mexico City was about to take off, a succession of military planes landed on the airstrip.

Tellez took out his cellphone, recording several videos that show two large air force transport aircraft, smaller, fighter-like attack aircraft and military trucks on the tarmac. Then gunshots began to echo in the distance.

A video circulating on social media, appearing to capture the same incident, showed passengers crouching low below their seats as a child cried.

A flight attendant said the engine had been hit, triggering a leak. The crew directed passengers to disembark, moving them to a windowless waiting room in the airport.

It is not clear who was shooting at whom.

Tellez’s family plans to board another flight on Friday, but until then, is staying put.

“We prefer to stay at the airport until it’s safe to leave,” he said. “The city is worse. There is a lot of shooting and confusion.”

‘El Chapo’: Mexican authorities arrest notorious drug lord’s son

CNN
 —

Mexican authorities have arrested Ovidio Guzmán, son of notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, a source from the federal government of Mexico told CNN, in a dramatic operation in the northern state of Sinaloa on Thursday that led to clashes around the city of Culiacán.

Guzmán is described as “a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa Cartel” in a press release issued by the United States State Department on December 16, prior to his arrest.

He was previously arrested by federal authorities in October 2019, but was released on the orders of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to avoid further bloodshed.

Chaos broke out in the city around Guzmán’s arrest on Thursday, with local officials telling citizens to shelter at home amid clashes with cartel members in various parts of Culiacán.

Social media videos appear to show trucks on fire and intense shooting near the airport, which was closed for most of the day due to the violence. CNN has not yet verified these videos.

Passengers appeared to crouch for cover in an Aeromexico plane according to video shared on social media, which was hit by a bullet while grounded in Culiacán.

No injuries were reported, said Aeromexico, which has canceled all its operations to and from the Sinaloan cities of Culiacan, Los Mochis and Mazatlan.

Culiacán International Airport closed after Guzmán’s arrest for security reasons, airport authorities said on their Twitter account.

In a morning address on Thursday, President López Obrador said the operation in Culiacán had been underway since dawn.

As the arrest unfolded, Sinaloa Secretary of Public Security Cristóbal Castañeda said that vehicles were being looted and blockades “are taking place in different parts of the city” as he asked the public not to leave the city.

The state’s education secretary also announced that school and administrative activities had been suspended in Culiacán and urged those who are in a risk area to take refuge in a safe place.

The state of Sinaloa is home to the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the world’s most powerful narcotics trafficking organizations. “El Chapo” was the leader of the cartel before he was sentenced to life in prison in 2020.

The arrest comes days before US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visit Mexico City to attend the North American Leaders Summit.

Capturing Guzmán could be a way for López Obrador to show the US that he is “in control of the armed forces and Mexico’s security situation,” Gladys McCormick, a associate professor at Syracuse University who focuses on Mexico-U.S. relations, told CNN in an email.

“It also defuses the power behind any ask from the Biden administration to stem the tide of fentanyl and other narcotics across the border,” she added.

The State Department, which was offering a $5 million reward for information leading to Guzman’s arrest, wrote that law enforcement investigations indicated that Guzmán and his brother, Joaquín Guzmán-López, “inherited a great deal of the narcotics proceeds” following the death of another brother, Edgar Guzmán-López.

They “began investing large amounts of the cash into the purchasing of marijuana in Mexico and cocaine in Colombia. They also began purchasing large amounts of ephedrine from Argentina and arranged for the smuggling of the product into Mexico as they began to experiment with methamphetamine production,” the State Department said.

The brothers are also alleged to oversee an estimated 11 “methamphetamine labs in the state of Sinaloa,” the State Department says.

Their father “El Chapo” Guzmán was convicted in the US in 2019 of 10 counts, including engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, drug trafficking and firearms charges. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years and ordered to pay $12.6 billion in forfeiture.

Mexican lucha libre star Dragon Lee signs deal with WWE

WWE has landed one of the top names in Mexican lucha libre.

Dragon Lee, an elite in-ring worker, signed a deal with WWE earlier this month and will start with the promotion in January, he told ESPN.

Lee finished up Wednesday with Mexico’s Lucha Libre AAA promotion, a tag team match with his brother Dralistico against FTR for AAA’s tag titles. The plan, he said, was to begin with WWE in January, starting with developmental brand NXT.

Lee, a 27-year-old who wrestles under a mask, has been a champion in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Ring of Honor, AAA and CMLL, Mexico’s oldest promotion. He comes from a wrestling family. Lee’s father is a luchador named La Bestia del Ring. Lee has been teaming with his brother Dralistico in Mexico recently and another brother, Rush, performs for AEW. He will move with his family to Orlando in the near future for the opportunity with WWE.

The signing of Lee is notable as WWE continues to expand globally with a push toward developmental territories in several other countries in 2023. Latin America is a priority for the promotion, sources said. Shawn Michaels, the legendary former champion and now WWE’s senior vice president of talent development creative running NXT, mentioned recently that the promotion is looking at an NXT Mexico branch.

“Dragon Lee is a tremendous talent that will immediately add value to the NXT roster,” James Kimball, WWE’s head of talent strategy and operations, said. “This signing is reflective of WWE’s renewed emphasis on globalizing our talent pipeline with Latin America positioned as a focal market.”

Though he had a match teaming with Rush and close friend Andrade in AEW back in August, Lee said being in WWE was always the “dream” and he wants to follow in the footsteps of legends he watched growing up, like Michaels, Batista and, of course, Rey Mysterio Jr., the most famous masked luchador of all time.

“I think I can become the new Rey Mysterio in WWE,” Lee said. “I just need the opportunity.”

Lee said he spoke in the past with former WWE talent relations exec Canyon Ceman, but the ball got rolling again after a conversation with WWE star Finn Balor a few months ago. Lee then worked with James Kimball and Trent Wilfinger, WWE talent strategy and development mavens, en route to signing a contract in early December.

“[Balor] told me, ‘Would you like to be in WWE?'” Lee said with a laugh. “I said, ‘Yeah, sure. Why not?’ … It was something special for me.”

One of Lee’s goals, he said, was to work on becoming a more well-rounded performer. In the ring, he is one of the top wrestlers in the world with the ability to work different styles from lucha libre to striking-heavy strong style to a technical, mat-based match. Lee said he has been diligently working on his English and his ability to connect with fans on the microphone.

“It’s my challenge to learn more about promos,” Lee said. “You will never finish learning in pro wrestling. But every time you wrestle, you learn. But about promos, it’s something new for me. I would like to learn something new, how to become not just a wrestler — an artist.”

Mexican boxer Canelo Álvarez sends warning to Lionel Messi

CNN
 —

Mexican boxer Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez has sent a warning to Lionel Messi, who he accused of disrespecting Mexico.

“Did you see Messi cleaning the floor with our shirt and flag????” Álvarez tweeted, apparently in reference to a video which shows Messi celebrating with his teammates in the changing room.

As the Argentine takes off his football boots, the video shows Messi’s foot appearing to make contact with a Mexico shirt that was on the floor. There is no indication that Messi kicked the shirt intentionally.

“He better pray to God that I don’t find him!!” Álvarez added in another tweet, with a series of angry emojis. “Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico! I’m not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bulls**t that Messi pulled.”

Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 on Saturday in a tense game in Group C at the Qatar World Cup. Messi scored the opening goal, before Enzo Fernández sealed the win late on to keep Argentina’s World Cup dream alive following its stunning opening round defeat to Saudi Arabia.

Álvarez, who is widely considered one of the best pound-for-pound boxers ever after winning world championships in four weight classes, added in one reply to a journalist: “It’s one thing them being better than us (in football), it’s another thing to have respect.”

CNN has asked Alvarez’s representatives for further comment but did not receive an immediate response. The Argentinean Football Association and Messi’s representatives did not immediately respond to CNN.

Messi’s former Argentina teammate Sergio Agüero responded to Álvarez on Twitter, saying: “Mr. Canelo, don’t look for excuses or problems, surely you don’t know about football and what happens in a changing room.

“The shirts are always on the floor after games have finished due to sweat and then if you look properly, he makes the movement to remove his boot and accidentally hits it.”

Argentina takes on Poland in its final group match on Wednesday, with Mexico facing Saudi Arabia as all four teams in Group C remain in with a chance of qualifying for the round of 16.

Mexican authorities search for 2 missing Americans, including an NAU professor, in the Gulf of California

CNN
 —

Mexican authorities are searching for two Americans who went missing after a kayaking trip off the coast of Puerto Peñasco in the Gulf of California, local authorities said late Saturday.

It’s unknown exactly when the couple went missing.

Yeon-Su Kim is a forestry professor at Northern Arizona University, according to her university bio.

Kim’s husband is Corey Allen, according to a verified GoFundMe page established to raise funds to aid the search for the missing couple.

“The search will be reinforced with reconnaissance flights from the Navy and by land from the Secretary of Public Security and municipal authorities of Puerto Peñasco,” the state coordinator for the civil protection agency of the Mexican state Sonora said on Twitter.

Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, is a fishing and resort city on the Gulf of California, south of Arizona.

A Northern Arizona University spokesperson issued a statement after the couple’s disappearance.

“The NAU and Flagstaff communities are hoping and praying that Yeon-Su and her husband Corey are found soon and brought home safely,” the statement said.

“Yeon-Su is a respected member of our NAU faculty and is well known for the warmth she shares with everyone she works with and her passion for our forestry mission,” the statement continued.

“We are so thankful to everyone helping with the search as well as those providing resources to support these efforts.”

Mexican woman allegedly killed for her organs after online courtship gone bad

WARNING: Details in this story are graphic.

The remains of a Mexican woman who traveled to Peru to pursue a romantic relationship with a medical student she met online washed up on a beach earlier this month and authorities believe her organs may have been harvested.

Blanca Arellano, 51, told her family she was taking a trip to Lima, where she planned to meet Juan Pablo Jesús Villafuerte, 37, following several months of a virtual courtship, The Independent reported.

On Nov. 7, Arellano told her niece, Karla Arellano, the romance was going well. However, Arellano stopped communicating with her family soon after.

“I never thought I would be in this situation, but today I’m asking for your support to spread this post and find one of the most loved and important people of my life,” Karla tweeted on Nov. 12. “My aunt Blanca Olivia Arellano Gutiérrez disappeared on Monday, November 7 in Peru, she is of Mexican origin, we fear for her life.”

In a series of posts, Karla Arellano said Villafuerte told her the couple broke up and that her aunt was traveling back to Mexico after claiming that “I couldn’t offer the life she wanted.”

“I decided to communicate with Juan P since he was the only contact she had in that country and that is where our fear was triggered,” Karla wrote.

On Nov. 10, authorities in Peru discovered a severed finger with a silver ring attached that was confirmed to be Blanca Arellano. More remains washed up in the days that followed, including a faceless head, an arm and a torso with all the internal organs that appeared to be harvested.

On Nov. 17, Villafuerte was arrested in connection with Arellano’s disappearance.

“Juan Pablo Villafuerte was arrested on charges of human organs trafficking,” said Peru’s general attorney in a news conference on Monday, according to Peru-based Latin Noticias.

Shortly after Arellano’s disappearance, Villafuerte posted videos to TikTok showing him appearing to dissect human organs, including a pancreas and brain, the Independent report said.

Authorities searched his home where they found blood splatter in several rooms, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported.

“My aunt was a kind, warm person, full of light, intelligent, dedicated, loving and that is how she should be remembered,” Karla tweeted Wednesday along with thanks to Peruvian authorities.
