Pelosi stops in Hawaii and reveals her Asia plans. But no mention of Taiwan

Pelosi is leading a Congressional delegation to the Indo-Pacific and plans to visit places including Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan, according to a statement released by her office on Sunday.

The statement made no mention of Taiwan, despite speculation in recent days that Pelosi might be planning to visit the self-governing democracy of 24 million people.
China’s Communist Party, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory — despite never having controlled it — has warned against Pelosi visiting the island, and US President Joe Biden recently let slip that the US military thinks such a trip would be “not a good idea right now”. However, US lawmakers on both sides of Washington’s political divide have urged her to go.

“Today, our Congressional delegation travels to the Indo-Pacific to reaffirm America’s strong and unshakeable commitment to our allies and friends in the region,” Pelosi said in the statement released by her office.

She said high level meetings will be held in each country to “further advance our shared interests and values, including peace and security, economic growth and trade, the Covid-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, human rights and democratic governance.”

Pelosi said the delegation had received a briefing from United States Indo-Pacific Command leadership after a fuel stop in Hawaii, where they visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial and the USS Arizona.

Traveling alongside Pelosi as part of the Congressional delegation are Chairman Gregory Meeks (Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee), Chairman Mark Takano (Chair of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs), Congresswoman Suzan DelBene, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Congressman Andy Kim.

“Under the strong leadership of President Biden, America is firmly committed to smart, strategic engagement in the region, understanding that a free and flourishing Indo-Pacific is crucial to prosperity in our nation and around the globe,” Pelosi said.

Nancy Pelosi’s Asia visit itinerary leaves out mention of possible stop in Taiwan

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office announced early Sunday morning that she plans to visit at least four Asian countries during her trip to the region, but a stop in Taiwan was notably left out.

Pelosi is leading a Congressional delegation to the Indo-Pacific region that includes stops in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan. The trip will center on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance in the Indo-Pacific region, her office said in a press release.

“Today, our Congressional delegation travels to the Indo-Pacific to reaffirm America’s strong and unshakeable commitment to our allies and friends in the region,” Pelosi said in the release.

“In Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan, our delegation will hold high-level meetings to discuss how we can further advance our shared interests and values, including peace and security, economic growth and trade, the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, human rights and democratic governance,” she continued.

Pelosi added, “Under the strong leadership of President Biden, America is firmly committed to smart, strategic engagement in the region, understanding that a free and flourishing Indo-Pacific is crucial to prosperity in our nation and around the globe.”

The Congressional delegation will include Reps. Gregory Meeks of New York, Mark Takano of California, Suzan DelBene of Washington, Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois and Andy Kim of New Jersey.

Pelosi’s announcement comes after President Joe Biden said earlier this month that U.S. military officials believe a visit to Taiwan from the Speaker is “not a good idea.”

The People’s Republic of China sees Taiwan as part of its territory. The Chinese military has frequently sent planes into Taiwan’s airspace to test the region’s air defense zone and the country has warned the U.S. against Pelosi visiting. She would be the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit the island county since 1997.

Chinese President Xi Jinping warned Biden in a phone call Thursday that the U.S. must not “play with fire” on Taiwan.

“Those who play with fire will perish by it. It is hoped that the US will be clear-eyed about this,” a Chinese readout of the Biden-Xi call said.

While the U.S. does not have official relations with Taiwan, it has increased engagements with the island and has tried to discourage China from invading.

China has become angered over the potential of Pelosi visiting Taiwan, with Beijing warning that there will be consequences if the Speaker stops on the island. Chinese officials have said Pelosi visiting Taiwan would violate the One China Policy and would constitute aiding an illegal rebellion.

A Chinese state media personality even suggested shooting down the Speaker’s plane if she does visit.

Don Lemon did not mention own role in Jussie Smollett trial

CNN host Don Lemon is getting blasted for covering his pal Jussie Smollett’s trial on his late-night show — without mentioning his own central role in tipping off the “Empire” star that he was being investigated by police.

As he took the stand Monday, Smollett, 39, had told the court that he first knew that police doubted his race-hate attack was real after getting a text message from Lemon, saying that was key in his decision not to hand his phone records over to cops.

The testimony quickly sparked comparisons between Lemon and his former CNN love-“brother” Chris Cuomo, who over the weekend was fired for his own meddling in his brother Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s sexual harassment scandal.

But while Cuomo refused to report on his brother’s scandal, Lemon ended his Monday night show with a report on the latest news from the ex-“Empire” star’s trial — with no mention of his own involvement.

He spoke on-air to CNN correspondent Omar Jimenez, who has been in court in Chicago covering the trial, promising “the very latest from the trial.”

The pair then reported on Smollett’s “really risky” decision to take the stand Monday, as well as the actor detailing his relationship with one of the men he is accused of hiring to stage his attack.

They never once mentioned Lemon’s involvement, even when discussing the “Empire” star’s decision not to hand his phone to police, which Smollett had told the court came after Lemon’s text.

Lemon’s attempts at straight news reporting was a far cry from his initial coverage of the attack, when he had admitted to his CNN viewers that Smollett’s case was “personal” to him because they were friends.

He also admitted in a 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight that he had texted the actor “every day” to check in on his wellbeing.

He later suggested he was a victim himself if Smollett had indeed made up the attack. He “lied to a lot of people … including me,” he said on air at the time, Fox News noted at the time.

“He squandered the good will of very high-profile people who one day may be running this country like Kamala Harris and Cory Booker and people like President Trump.”

Lemon’s straight-faced coverage without mentioning his own involvement sparked outrage online, with some calling him a “crook” and saying it was time for CNN to “bid him goodbye.”

“Please resign and salvage what you have left of your disgraceful career,” one person said, saying viewers are “tired of your lies and divisiveness.”

Many also compared Lemon’s scandal to that of his former colleague, Chris Cuomo.

“Did CNN’s Don Lemon Pull a Chris Cuomo?” one person asked, while another also noted that as well as potential journalistic ethics issues, both men have been accused of sexual misconduct.

“If CNN is to be impartial they need to suspend Lemon until further review,” another commentator said.

Reps for CNN and Lemon did not immediately respond to requests for comment late Monday, Fox News said.

Vanguard Marketing Doesn’t Mention Activision

Image: Activision Blizzard

Call of Duty: Vanguard was officially announced yesterday, the first major Activision Blizzard reveal since the corporation came under public scrutiny for its abhorrent treatment of female employees. A minor detail in the reveal video has some speculating that Activision is keen to avoid reminding everyone it’s involved in the game’s development.

This strange phenomenon was first noticed by Twitter user Neoxon619, who pointed out that the end of the Call of Duty: Vanguard trailer didn’t include an Activision logo alongside those for developing studios Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch, and Beenox. In fact, the video doesn’t mention Activision anywhere but in the legally required, small-print copyright information.

A quick examination of previous reveal trailers on the series’ official YouTube page shows that a prominent Activision logo has been present as far back as the announcement video for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which was first uploaded to the channel on May 23, 2011.

Neoxon also highlighted the fact that Activision’s logo is missing from the Call of Duty: Vanguard page on Battle.net, the company’s digital storefront. Again, Kotaku confirmed this is a common inclusion on several of the platform’s Call of Duty listings, where Activision’s graphic can be seen positioned above the logos for games like Modern Warfare, Black Ops: Cold War, and Black Ops 4.

Call of Duty has continued to expand into an incredible universe of experiences,” an Activision rep told Kotaku. “This was a creative choice that reflects how Vanguard represents the next major installment in the franchise.”

Activision Blizzard is still embroiled in controversy following a lawsuit filed by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing that accused the massive corporation of fostering an environment of harassment and abuse targeted mainly at female employees for years. Since then, several notable figures have departed the company, including Blizzard president J. Allen Brack, Blizzard head of human relations Jesse Meschuk, and Diablo 4 lead designer Jesse McCree.

The omission of Activision logos from Call of Duty: Vanguard marketing has been roundly mocked on social media as a cowardly distancing of the game from the publisher’s involvement.

“If this doesn’t show you how terrified Activision is for the lawsuit,” wrote one user in response to Neoxon’s original tweet, “then I’m not sure what to tell you.”

Shakira appears on Lorraine but there is NO MENTION of singer’s £13million tax evasion scandal

On Thursday, a judge concluded there are ‘sufficient indications’ for her to go to trial for allegedly avoiding the payment of 14.5 million euros, according to Euro Weekly.

And on Friday, Shakira, 44, appeared on ITV’s Lorraine but there was no mention of singer’s £13million tax evasion scandal, just a day after Spanish prosecutors accused her of six offences, which could result in jail time if she is convicted.

Instead of being grilled about the situation, the Colombian superstar opened up about motherhood, making music and her passion for surfing, while promoting new single Don’t Wait Up.

Lighthearted: On Friday, Shakira, 44, appeared on ITV’s Lorraine but there was no mention of singer’s £13million tax evasion scandal, after Spanish prosecutors accused her of six offences

20 years since her first hit single Whenever Wherever, stormed the charts and catapulted her to worldwide fame, Shakira has been on UK television to celebrate.

Speaking via videolink to Ross King, the singer enthused about being able to resume making music after lockdown, admitting: ‘It was hard to make music [during lockdown], being isolated from everybody.

‘But now that it is a little safer to be in a room with collaborators, I’m seizing the opportunity and I feel like a horse that’s running wild after being for so long in a box.’

The fitness fanatic also insisted: ‘I surf for real’ when asked if she had a stunt double for her new music video.

Yikes! On Thursday, a judge concluded there are ‘sufficient indications’ for her to go to trial for allegedly avoiding the payment of 14.5 million euros, according to Euro Weekly

Talking about life as a parent, Shakira asserted: ‘The biggest and most profound change is becoming a mum, [it’s] the hardest job I’ve ever had to take on and also the most fulfilling thing.

‘I feel so much comfort in the hug of my kids, when I have them around me, physically, they kiss me and they tell me, ‘Mom, I love you.’ I just feel in the clouds when that happens.’

She added: ‘It’s hard to keep a balance, but I feel like this is a new chapter in my life. My kids are at an easier age now, they’re six and eight, so they’re more independent, which allows me to do my own thing too and I guess that’s why I feel so creative lately.’

Staying away from the scandal: Instead of being asked about it, the superstar opened up about motherhood, making music and her passion for surfing, while promoting single Don’t Wait Up

Asked if her children realise she and husband, footballer Gerard Piqué, are worldwide superstars, Shakira admitted: ‘They do, but I try to provide them with as much normality as I can.

‘Gerard and me like to be regular people. We forget about the celebrity personas we represent most of the time, it’s only people in the street that remind us of that.’

On whether their two sons prefer music or football, Shakira mused: ‘They oscillate – the eldest is very sporty, but he’s very musical, he just doesn’t know it.

‘He tells me, ‘Mom, remember I’m a football person, do not get confused. Yeah, I play the drums, but I’m a football person.’ He just wants to leave things clear for me and not create hopes.

‘They’re very sweet, sweet boys and we’re very happy being parents and also very tired!’

Doing the promo rounds: 20 years since her first hit single Whenever Wherever, stormed the charts and catapulted her to worldwide fame, Shakira has been on UK television to celebrate

While the lighthearted conversion allowed Shakira to touch on certain aspects of her life, the tax evasion allegations hanging over her were not mentioned.

Spanish prosecutors claim the Hips Don’t Lie hitmaker stopped paying taxes in Spain in the years 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Shakira has previously said that during those years she lived in the Bahamas and was not a resident of Spain, only visiting the country ‘sporadically’.

But now a judge has concluded there are ‘sufficient indications’ for Shakira to go to trial for allegedly avoiding the payment of 14.5 million euros, Euro Weekly reports.

Shakira plans on presenting an appeal to the Barcelona Court against the judgment, it is believed.

Oh dear: Spanish prosecutors claim the Hips Don’t Lie hitmaker stopped paying taxes in Spain in the years 2012, 2013 and 2014. The time frame to prosecute alleged tax offences in 2011 has expired (Pictured in July)

The musician has previously insisted she is innocent of tax evasion after she was questioned by a Spanish judge.

She denied allegations of not paying tax when she lived in Spain between 2011 and 2014, during an hour and a half long hearing in Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona.

Prosecutors claimed that the superstar failed to pay taxes in Spain despite being a resident in the country for four years before 2014.

While she is alleged to have moved to Spain in 2011 when her relationship with footballer Gerard Pique was made public, prosecutors claim she maintained her official tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015 when she started paying taxes in Spain.

The case only covers the period from 2012 to 2014, as the time frame to prosecute alleged tax offences in 2011 has expired.

Her press team later had previously released a statement stating the Colombian Superstar was innocent and everything claimed by tax authorities had been paid. ‘There is currently no debt’, it said.

Her defence team had argued that until 2014 she earned most of her money in international tours and did not live more than six months a year in Spain – and was therefore not a resident under tax law.

The statement said: ‘Shakira has always fulfilled her tax duties in all those countries in which she has worked, including in the period between 2011 and 2014’/

‘She followed the opinions and precise recommendations of her advisers, who are top-level professionals from one of the biggest companies in the world.’

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV and ITV Hub.

Ted Lieu Erupts at Mention of Harvard Asian-Discrimination Case during Hearing on Diversity

Representative Ted Lieu (D., Calif.) bristled at a witness for bringing up Harvard’s alleged discrimination against Asian Americans during a House hearing on diversity on the federal courts.

“Stop bringing in irrelevant issues, there are more Asian Americans at these Ivy Leagues than in the federal judiciary — they’re unrepresented. These are different issues happening,” Lieu yelled at civil rights attorney Peter Kirsanow. “Don’t bring in these college issues because this is not what the hearing’s about.”

Kirsanow said he agreed with the assessment that Asian Americans are “underrepresented” in the judiciary, but argued that his prior point was relevant “based on the fact that there’s been discrimination in the pipeline.”

“The perception by the public is we are making determinations on the basis of race — one of the most baleful and anathema consideration we have in the United States because of history. It’s precisely why I say that we must avoid, at all costs, the perception that decisions are being made on the basis of race. And when you look at the correlative, with how decision-making is being made through the admissions process, it appears as if decisions in large part are being based on race.”

In November, First Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the argument brought by Students for Fair Admissions, a group representing several anonymous Asian-American plaintiffs, arguing that the university discriminates against applicants of Asian descent and attempts to lower their representation on campus.

Students for Fair Admissions filed a powerful certiorari petition with the Supreme Court in February, asking for the Court to rule that Harvard’s admissions practices violate Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by discriminating against Asian Americans. Kirsanow said he filed a brief in support of the case on Wednesday.

Lieu then angrily interjected to tell Kirsanow that “we’re not talking about admissions process. We’re talking about the federal judiciary.”

“The reason that you can’t talk about the federal judiciary and you keep going to the college issue is because you know you have no basis on the issue of the federal judiciary,” he continued. “It just needs to be more diverse.”

Lieu called it “corrosive to America to have an entire third branch of government in which people were selected on the basis of them being white.” He cited a 2019 report from the progressive Center for American Progress finding that 73 percent of federal judges are white males.
