Oprah Winfrey endorses John Fetterman over Dr. Mehmet Oz in high-stakes Pennsylvania Senate race

Oprah Winfrey said on Thursday that she was endorsing Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman over Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz in the Pennsylvania Senate race.

While Winfrey is a Democrat herself, it’s notable because Oz first came to prominence as a health expert on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” before he got his own talk show in 2009, which was produced her company Harpo. His show ended in January.

“I’ll tell you all this, if I lived in Pennsylvania, I would have already cast my vote for John Fetterman for many reasons,” Winfrey said during a virtual conversation with community leaders.

Fetterman’s campaign said Winfrey’s support for the Democrat over Oz “speaks volumes.”

“Oprah is widely regarded as the person who helped launch Dr. Oz’s career, and knows him well,” the campaign said.

Fetterman called her endorsement an “honor and privilege,” saying she is a “leader on so many issues — fighting for our democracy, passing common-sense gun reform, and ensuring racial justice. I’m grateful for Oprah’s support and trust on the issues that matter to people across the country and Pennsylvania as we close out this campaign.”

FETTERMAN LOSES SUPPORT IN PENNSYLVANIA SENATE RACE AFTER DEBATE PERFORMANCE, POLL FINDS

Following the primaries, Winfrey previously declined to make an endorsement in the race, saying it was up to Pennsylvanians to decide.

Since then, the polls have tightened, with Fetterman’s lead having shrunk.

Winfrey also endorsed Democrats in other races.

“That is not the only race that matters,” she said. “If I was in North Carolina, as you mentioned, Sister [Cheri] Beasley there, and if I was in Florida, I’d be supporting Val Demings. If I was in Wisconsin, it would be Mandela Barnes. In Nevada, [Catherine] Cortez Masto, and in Texas, Beto O’Rourke and Raphael Warnock and the incredible Stacey Abrams, of course, in Georgia.”

She continued, “There are clear choices out there… the values we hold dear, the values of inclusion, the values of compassion and that so many of us share… Use your discernment and choose wisely for the democracy of our country.”

PA Primary: Mehmet Oz, Dave McCormick neck and neck in Pennsylvania’s GOP Senate contest ; Kathy Barnette trails by 76,000 votes

NEWTOWN, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — The night’s most closely watched race in Pennsylvania’s GOP Senate contest is still too close to call.

Election Results: Live updates on Pennsylvania primary races

Celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz and former hedge fund executive Dave McCormick are neck and neck. Political commentator Kathy Barnette trails behind by more than 76,000 votes.

As of 11 p.m. with 99% of the estimated vote counted, McCormick led by 337,797 votes while Oz held 335,314 votes. Barnette had 261,299 total votes.

The winner will face Democratic challenger John Fetterman who won his party’s nomination days after suffering a stroke.

“We’re not gonna have a result tonight,” Oz said shortly before midnight, before vowing to Trump, “I will make you proud.”

Oz had been locked in an expensive battle with McCormick. But Barnette, who has drawn the support of Trump backers suspicious of Oz’s ideological shifts, stunned the political world with a late surge that upended the race in the final weeks as she tries to become the first Black Republican woman elected to the Senate.

Barnette, who voted in Huntingdon Valley on Tuesday morning, has repeated false claims the 2020 election was stolen.

In recent days, pictures have emerged of Barnette apparently marching near members of the Proud Boys on January 6, 2021. ABC News has verified the images that were first shared by an independent researcher.

She denied any connection to the Proud Boys to another network.

Trump endorses Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania Senate race

The endorsement came after months of behind-the-scenes jockeying by Oz and another leading candidate in Pennsylvania, Dave McCormick, a hedge fund executive. Both Oz and McCormick entered the primary after Trump’s first choice for the nomination, Sean Parnell, dropped out of the race late last year.

“The Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has a tremendous opportunity to Save America by electing the brilliant and well-known Dr. Mehmet Oz for the United States Senate,” the endorsement read. “I have known Dr. Oz for many years, as have many others, even if only through his very successful television show. He has lived with us through the screen and has always been popular, respected and smart.”

Trump went on to say that he believes Oz will “be the one most able to win the General Election” and would perform well in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Trump touted Oz’s education and his medical career in the endorsement. He also said of Oz, “He even said that I was in extraordinary health, which made me like him even more (although he also said I should lose a couple of pounds!).”

Former first lady Melania Trump reportedly preferred Oz to the other candidates, and in his statement, Trump said Oz would earn the support of women.

“Women in particular, are drawn to Dr. Oz for his advice and counsel,” said the former President on Saturday. “I have seen this many times over the years. They know him, believe in him, and trust him.”

Despite the longstanding relationship between Oz and the Trumps, there were signs that McCormick had an advantage to get the endorsement. His wife, Dina Powell McCormick, was a top national security aide for Trump in the White House. And a number of trusted Trump aides — including Hope Hicks and Stephen Miller — had signed on to help McCormick’s campaign.

Jeff Roe, a top Republican consultant working for McCormick, tweeted in response to the Trump endorsement that his client is “going to be the next Senator from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”
And Parnell, who has endorsed McCormick, tweeted, “I’m disappointed by this. Oz is the antithesis of everything that made Trump the best president of my lifetime—he’s the farthest thing from America First & he’d be very bad for PA.”
According to the Washington Post, Trump met with McCormick earlier this week at Mar-a-Lago. The former President told the Post earlier this week that he would be making an endorsement in the race within about a week.
Oz, McCormick and other Republican candidates will face off on May 17 in a primary for the seat, which is held by retiring Republican Pat Toomey. Democrats will also have a competitive primary for the Senate seat, and the race will be one of the most high-profile, and likely one of the most expensive, of November’s midterm elections. It could represent Democrats’ best chance of picking up a GOP-held seat.

“The Republican Senate primary in Pennsylvania was already nasty, expensive and brutal,” said Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesperson Patrick Burgwinkle. “Now Trump’s endorsement will only intensify this intra-party fight, just like it has in GOP Senate primaries across the country — leaving their ultimate nominee badly damaged and out of step with the voters who will decide the general election.”

CNN’s Alex Rogers contributed to this report.

‘The Dr. Oz Show’ show to end amid Mehmet Oz’s senate run

Sony said that “The Good Dish,” a show co-hosted by Oz’s daughter that focuses on nutrition and recipes, will replace the long-running medical show.

The announcement comes as the show’s host, Dr. Mehmet Oz, runs as a Republican for the United States Senate in Pennsylvania.

Oz amassed television notoriety as Oprah Winfrey’s medical expert. In 2009, he parlayed the TV appearances on her show into “The Dr. Oz Show,” which has won several daytime Emmy awards. Reaching millions of viewers on his show, Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon, has for years been one of the most well-known doctors in the country.

But during the pandemic, Oz has morphed into a more polarizing figure. His commentary on the coronavirus, which often took place on the right-wing channel Fox News, was applauded by Republicans. But it turned off others and, at times, was criticized by the medical community.

Early on in the pandemic, for instance, Oz talked up the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a way to treat the coronavirus — despite the lack of firm scientific evidence that it is an effective treatment.

In his opening campaign video, Oz said that politicians responded incorrectly to the pandemic. Oz argued that such politicians “took away our freedom without masking us safer.”

Oz, who is an advocate of alternative medicines and treatments, has been skewered by the medical community for years. In 2015, a group of physicians wrote Columbia University, saying they were “dismayed” Oz was a member of the school’s faculty. And in 2014, Oz was scolded by senators during a congressional hearing over his promotion of weight-loss products on his television show.

Each time, he has defended himself. In 2015, Oz said he provides the public “information that will help them on their path to be their best selves,” provides “multiple points of view,” and contended that “doesn’t sit well” sometimes “with certain agendas which distorts the facts.”
