Gen. Mark Milley meets Gen. Valery Zaluzhny near the Ukrainian border

Comment

SOUTHEASTERN POLAND — The Pentagon’s top general met on Tuesday for the first time in person with his Ukrainian counterpart, traveling by vehicle from a base here in Poland to an undisclosed location near the countries’ border in what appeared to be a symbolic show of support as Washington intensifies its military assistance to Ukraine.

Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, spent a couple of hours with Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, the top officer in Ukraine’s armed forces, said Col. David Butler, a U.S. military spokesman. The meeting was arranged after it became clear that Zaluzhny would not be able to attend a gathering Wednesday of senior NATO military officials in Brussels. Milley was accompanied by five other Americans, an interpreter and security personnel. News of the high-level interaction was withheld until it concluded, with officials citing safety precautions.

“They’ve talked in detail about the defense that Ukraine is trying to do against Russia’s aggression,” Butler said of the meeting. “And it’s important — when you have two military professionals looking each other in the eye and talking about very, very important topics, there’s a difference.”

The face-to-face encounter occurred after a year of remote meetings between the generals, and as the United States and its allies expand the arsenal of weapons they are providing to Ukraine — including advanced American fighting vehicles, European tanks and an array of other equipment — ahead of an expected counteroffensive against Russian forces.

The scope of training being provided for Ukrainian forces also has grown significantly, with U.S. soldiers in Germany now preparing a Ukrainian mechanized battalion to better combine how those troops use U.S.-made weapons to maximize their effects on the battlefield, and as other U.S. Army personnel in Oklahoma show their Ukrainian counterparts how to use a sophisticated air defense system.

U.S. involvement in Ukraine war deepens, with troops to train in Oklahoma

The Kremlin has sharply criticized Western efforts to help Ukraine, accusing Washington and its NATO allies of waging a proxy war against Moscow and raising concerns that Russia could at some point grow intolerant of the intervention and target the United States or another NATO country. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently named Milley’s Russian counterpart, Gen. Valery Gerasimovas his top commander in Ukraine, a move observers have said is a strong indication Moscow has no inclination to end its invasion as the war nears its one-year mark with more than 100,000 dead or wounded on both sides.

Milley arrived in southeastern Poland about 11 a.m. local time and began his meeting with Zaluzhny about two hours later, Butler said. Some Americans traveling with the general, including two journalists, remained at the military base here — a way station used to funnel aid to Ukraine — while Milley traveled closer to the border. No photography was allowed during the visit, and U.S. military officials requested that the journalists withhold exact locations.

The meeting occurred a day after a contingent of civilian officials from the Pentagon and State Department met in Kyiv with President Volodymyr Zelensky and other senior Ukrainian officials. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to Ukraine’s capital previously in a demonstration of the Biden administration’s support. Milley has not visited Ukraine, as the United States appears to maintain a policy in which only the small contingent of American military personnel assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv spend time in the country.

Butler said the visit did not pose significant security concerns for Milley, and that he did not go anywhere believed to be dangerous. The general wanted to provide Zaluzhny with his impressions of the Ukrainian unit that just began training under the supervision of U.S. soldiers in Germany after visiting them on Monday, and to discuss Ukrainian needs ahead of a regularly scheduled meeting later this week of the Ukraine Contact Group, a gathering of international partners that have supported the country militarily throughout the war.

“Gen. Milley’s job here as a military guy is to be able to describe the tactical and operational conditions of the battlefield, and what the military needs are. And the way he does that is one, by understanding it himself, but two, by talking to Gen. Zaluzhny on a regular basis.”

Pentagon eyes major expansion of Ukraine military training

Tuesday’s visit marked the third time that Milley has visited the base in southeastern Poland since the war began. U.S. troops here, speaking on the condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the military, said that their mission has expanded in the past few months as the array of weaponry from approved for transfer has grown.

Military personnel have worked to improve security at the base since the beginning of the war, adding new concrete bunkers and thick, sand-filled outdoor walls commonly known as HESCO barriers to join two batteries of Patriot air defense systems that were deployed in southeastern Poland in the spring.

A U.S. soldier assigned to the Patriot unit said Tuesday that some have been assigned to the base since March and that they aren’t sure when another unit of soldiers may arrive to rotate in and replace them. That’s not uncommon for Patriot units, but the lack of predictability has put a strain on the unit, the soldier said.

The unit operates continuously, with its alert status ebbing and flowing based on events of the day.

“We have to respond properly to the situation,” the soldier said.

Musk rips ‘Satanic’ ESG as World Economic Forum meets and discusses controversial investment regime

Elon Musk weighed in with his thoughts on the World Economic Forum’s plans to incorporate “environmental, social and governance,” or ESG, criteria into its investment strategy on Sunday, saying the “S” should stand for something else.

“The S in ESG stands for Satanic,” the Twitter CEO tweeted.

The tweet was in response to author and former California gubernatorial candidate Michael Schellenberger, who posted a series of tweets about the WEF’s Davos summit launch and rumors that the group is seeking global domination.

TESLA OWNERS FEEL ‘DUPED’ AFTER COMPANY SLASHES PRICES

Schellenberger tweeted that the WEF and its founder, Klaus Schwab, are fighting back against those who say they are seeking global domination through a “great reset” that could strip the masses of private property, de-industrialize the economy and make everyone eat bugs.

He highlighted a statement from a WEF spokesperson in August, who said, “‘Own nothing, be happy’ – you might have heard the phrase…It started as a screenshot, culled from the Internet by an anonymous anti-Semitic account on the image board 4chan. ‘Own nothing, be happy – The Jew World Order 2030’…”

Schellenberger said the spokesperson’s statement was not accurate, though, and that the phrase “Own nothing, be happy,” originated from the WEF’s website, not 4chan.

TESLA APPLIES FOR $776M EXPANSION OF TEXAS GIGAFACTORY

He also explained in the tweets WEF can hardly be considered a conspiracy, crediting Davos as “one of the most heavily publicized events in the world,” and it attracts celebrities, world leaders and billionaires.

Schellenberger said WEF has proven to be highly secretive, and when the public asked WEF how Klaus Schwab Foundation invests its assets, a spokesperson said, “Swiss law does not require financial reporting for foundations.”

“WEF says its wealth is managed by an internal Investment Committee that seeks to incorporate ‘environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria in its investment strategy to manage the foundation’s long-term strategic reserves,’” Schellenberger tweeted.

Which is when Musk tweeted the “‘S’ in ESG stands for Satanic.”

Musk later said, “There should be a game show: ‘4Chan or Davos, who said it?’”

Aaron Taylor-Johnson ‘meets with 007 producers’ amid rumours he’s tipped to be next James Bond

The name’s Johnson… Aaron Taylor-Johnson: British actor had ‘secret audition’ to become the next James Bond last year after ‘impressing’ franchise producer Barbara Broccoli

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has met with 007 producers amid rumours he is he’s tipped to be the next James Bond.

The actor, 32, met to discuss the iconic role following Daniel Craig’s exit from the franchise after his fifth appearance as the secret agent in 2021 smash No Time To Die.

According to Puck News Aaron’s sat down with producer Barbara Broccoli and sources claim the meeting went ‘very well’ after he reportedly filmed a secret audition late last year.

However the source went on to say that nothing was officially confirmed and it’s unclear what any next steps might be.

MailOnline have contacted reps for both Aaron and Barbara for comment.

In December it was reported that Aaron had shot scenes as the secret agent, filming the memorable ‘gun barrel teaser footage’ seen in the films over the years.

A source told The Sun at the time: ‘Aaron has impressed bosses so much that he has filmed one of the franchise’s famous gun barrel teaser scenes, something all the actors do. That move takes him a step closer to signing a deal.’

They added: ‘Bosses at the brand were really impressed with his unique blend of acting intensity and his impressive back catalogue of action films.’

The publication reported a month earlier that Aaron was a hit with producers and particularly impressed producer Barbara.

‘Aaron went for a screen test to be the next Bond in September and producers and Barbara loved him. He is now one of the front-runners,’ a source told the publication at the time.

Aaron, who is married to Fifty Shades Of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson, 55, has starred in the Kick-Ass movies, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Godzilla.

It follows reports that Idris Elba walked away from ‘years of talks’ with movie bosses to become the next Bond, paving the way for a new 007.

Bookmakers William Hill subsequently placed Henry Cavill at the forefront with 5/2, Regé Jean-Page with odds of 4/1, followed by Tom Hardy and James Norton both with 6/1 and Chiwetel Ejiofor at 7/1.

Henry, 39, recently revealed he was leaving The Witcher, with Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth stepping into the role as Geralt of Rivia.

Daniel Craig, 54, has starred in five of the Bond films, from Casino Royale to No Time to Die.

Sam Bankman-Fried meets with The Big Short author Michael Lewis while on house arrest

Author Michael Lewis, whose bestseller The Big Short was adapted into a Hollywood blockbuster, reportedly met with disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried in recent days at the California home where he is holed up awaiting trial.

Lewis, 62, met with Bankman-Fried for several hours on Friday at the $4 million home of the accused crypto fraudster’s parents, who are both Stanford University law professors, the New York Post reported citing sources.

Outside the home, barricades manned by private security guards seal off the residential street to keep curious onlookers at bay, an arrangement that is costing Bankman-Fried’s parents some $10,000 per week, according to the Post.

Lewis has reportedly been working on a book about Bankman-Fried for months, a project that was first revealed last month when the implosion of FTX accelerated his timeline for publication.

Prior to Bankman-Fried’s arrest on federal charges, Lewis reportedly spent six months shadowing the 30-year-old CEO, traveling with him and interviewing him extensively.

Author Michael Lewis, whose bestseller The Big Short was adapted into a Hollywood Blockbuster, reportedly met with Bankman-Fried at the home on Friday

The Ankler first reported that literary agent Michael Snyder informed his contacts that Lewis had six months’ worth of material on Bankman-Fried – who feuded in spectacular style with his mentor, Binance founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao.

Zhao, head of the world’s largest bitcoin and crypto exchange, initially announced plans to rescue FTX, Bankman-Fried’s company, but then backed out, saying FTX was not stable.

Lewis likened the pair to Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.

‘Michael hasn’t written anything yet, but the story has become too big for us to wait,’ the agent said in his email, obtained by The Ankler.

Lewis’ previous books The Big Short, Moneyball and The Blind Side were all turned into Hollywood blockbusters.

It’s unclear whether Bankman-Fried would stand to benefit financially if Lewis’ upcoming book about him were turned into a movie.

Typically, studios do not have to pay to obtain life rights for public figures, especially if they option a work of non-fiction for adaptation.

Bankman-Fried’s parents Barbara Fried and Joseph Bankman are both Stanford University law professors. They are seen above leaving court last week

The family is reportedly paying $10,000 per week for the private security patrols sealing off their residential street and keeping onlookers away

Disgraced FTX-founder Sam Bankman-Fried will be spending his house arrest at this five-bedroom home in the Bay Area after being released on $250million bond Thursday

However, even some convicted criminals have taken payouts from studios eager to avoid lawsuits. In one case, the con artist Anna Sorkin took $320,000 from Netflix for the rights to adapt her life story, though the funds reportedly went to pay restitution and fines.

Bankman-Fried has not been convicted of any crime, but is free on $250 million bail as he awaits trial on federal charges including wire fraud, commodities fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, and campaign finance law violations.

In August, Lewis discussed in broad terms his upcoming book about Bankman-Fried in an interview with Financial News.

‘I really don’t want to reveal exactly what I’m writing about,’ he said.

‘But I found a character through whom I can write about — it weirdly links up Flash Boys, The Big Short and Liar’s Poker.

‘I guess it is possible it will be framed as a crypto book, but it won’t be a crypto book.

‘It’ll be about this really unusual character. You’ll learn all about crypto and you’ll learn about what screwed up market structure in the United States and so on.’

Sam Bankman-Fried is depicted in court on Thursday where he was granted $250million bail

FTX had a one-time valuation of $32 billion before collapsing in bankruptcy last month amid allegations that billions in client funds were siphoned off to prop up Bankman-Fried’s hedge fund, Alameda Research.

Bankman-Fried, arrested in the Bahamas two weeks ago, was brought to the United States last week to face charges that he cheated FTX investors and looted customer deposits.

He was freed on a $250 million personal recognizance bond to live with his parents in Palo Alto, California, after an electronic monitoring bracelet was attached to him so authorities could track his whereabouts.

On Tuesday, the case was reassigned to Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, after the judge originally assigned recused herself because her husband worked for a law firm that had once done work related to FTX.

Kaplan, 78, who has held senior status in Manhattan federal court for over a decade, was nominated to the bench by President Bill Clinton in 1994 and has a reputation as a non-nonsense jurist.

He has overseen numerous high-profile trials and is currently presiding over the two federal civil suits that former Elle magazine advice columnist E. Jean Carroll filed against former President Donald Trump.

Carroll said Trump raped her in the dressing room of a Manhattan luxury department store in 1995 or 1996. Trump has denied the accusations. A trial is scheduled for April.

The storied judge also was presiding over sex abuse claims by an American woman against Prince Andrew before the two sides settled earlier this year, with Andrew declaring that he never meant to malign her character and agreeing to donate to the woman’s charity. Prior to the settlement, Kaplan had refused Andrew’s request to toss the lawsuit.

Most recently, Kaplan presided over the civil trial of Kevin Spacey after a fellow actor accused him of trying to molest him in his apartment after a party when he was 14 and Spacey was 26.

A jury sided with Spacey, finding that actor Anthony Rapp had not proved his case against him.

MTG Says GOP Faction Called ‘the 5 Families’ Meets Every Week in McCarthy’s Office

  • Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said a group of Republican is meeting every week in Kevin McCarthy’s office.
  • The meeting is called “the five families,” she said, in an apparent mafia reference.
  • McCarthy, a strong contender for House Speaker, is planning a series of investigations next year.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia says a group of Republicans called “the five families” meets every week to discuss strategy and policy in Kevin McCarthy’s office.

Greene made the mob reference while speaking on a Tuesday episode of conspiracy theorist Steve Bannon’s show, “The War Room.”

She claimed the Biden administration and House Democrats are “terrified” of Republican congressional leaders, now that the latter has taken the majority in the House.

“Because they’re hearing us talk, and they know we’re organizing,” she told Bannon.

“What we’ve been doing, and it’s really interesting, people are arguing, people are clashing, people are also starting to agree,” said Greene. “And there’s a meeting happening every week, and we meet in Kevin McCarthy’s office.”

“And it’s called the five families. And the five families, you know my reference, the five families are parts of our conference, all the different parts,” she continued. “And we are coming together and having discussions on how we are going to govern in the majority.”

The Five Families often refer to five major organized crime families in the Italian American mafia who were prominent in New York City in the 20th century.

Bannon joked that he hoped the Republicans’ “five families” meetings fare better than the ones in the 1972 mafia movie “The Godfather.”

“They went to war,” he said, as the show cut to a break.

Greene, a controversial figure in the GOP and a loyal supporter of former President Donald Trump, may soon see a resurgence in her political influence if House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy puts her on his planned oversight committee.

She’s thrown in her support for McCarthy’s bid to be House Speaker, and is in turn expected to be handed a committee assignment in the next Congress. The House previously stripped Greene of her committee appointments on February 4, 2021, with her critics saying she promoted baseless conspiracy theories, racism, and violence against Democrats.

Greene said in November that she’s set to secure a spot on the oversight panel, which McCarthy wants to use to launch a litany of investigations into the Biden administration, China, the FBI, big tech, and other parties.

Representatives for Greene and McCarthy did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment sent outside regular business hours.

King Charles beams as he meets Ryan Reynolds after Prince Harry and Meghan ‘waged war’ on royals

King Charles was all smiles as he met Ryan Reynolds in Wrexham today – in his second public appearance since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle began ‘waging war’ on the Royal Family.

The monarch, 74, visited the football club – which was purchased by the Hollywood actor in February 2021 – with the Queen Consort this afternoon.

The royal couple visited the club’s stadium to speak with co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to learn about how it has contributed to the regeneration of the Welsh city, which was the subject of Disney+’s Welcome to Wrexham series.

Despite Prince Harry and Meghan Markle unleashing further bombshells on the Royal Family with the release of their Netflix documentary yesterday, King Charles was all smiles as he spoke with the A-List father-of-three.

King Charles appeared to share a joke with Hollywood A-Lister Ryan Reynolds – who purchased the Welsh football club in February 2021

While the monarch wrapped up warm in a double-breasted tweed navy coat, Ryan – who is married to actress Blake Lively – opted for a three-piece suit for the royal engagement.

Sharing footage of the King meeting the Wrexham co-owners, the Daily Mail’s royal correspondent Rebecca English said Charles and Camilla’s visit will feature in an upcoming episode of the hit Disney+ series.

Ahead of the visit, Ryan said he was ‘impossibly excited’ to meet King Charles and the Queen Consort.

He said: ‘Rob and I both said early on, and this holds true and for the rest of our lives, we will do anything to uplift and elevate this community and this club and having the King pay a visit is it’s certainly one way to do it. That’s for sure.’

After shaking Ryan and Rob’s hands, the King appears to make a comment about the cold temperature.

‘I’m from Philadelphia but I live in Los Angeles,’ Rob told him. ‘So it’s actually quite warm there!’

The hit sports documentary follows the Deadpool and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars’ attempts to rejuvenate the football club, which was facing dissolution following the pandemic.

Due to their celebrity status, the two have been able to secure partnerships with TikTok, Expedia, EA Sports and Reynolds’ own Aviation Gin. They have also been able to lure top talent with their money and were able to pay for upgrades to Racecourse Ground — the oldest international football stadium in the world.

King Charles and the Queen Consort tried to tune out the the noise surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary series – which landed on the streaming platform yesterday.

The Duke and Duchess took a series of new swipes at the Royal Family and Britain in their new series which is being described as a transatlantic ‘TV bomb’ aimed at The Firm.

Episode one begins with a thinly-veiled attack on Buckingham Palace’s decision not to co-operate with their six-part documentary charting their courtship, marriage and Megxit.

As part of their $100million deal with Netflix, the privacy-conscious couple have handed over a trove of pictures and video from their relationship including the moment Harry proposed in 2017 and filming himself in the VIP lounge at Heathrow as he emigrated in March 2020.

The first three episodes contain a series of barbs that will upset his father King Charles III, including Harry’s claim that he was ‘literally brought up’ by a ‘second family’ in Africa where he chose to spend three-month stints in his late teens and twenties as he came to terms with his mother’s death.

Harry also describes a ‘huge level of unconscious bias’ in the Royal Family – with reference to Princess Michael of Kent wearing an offensive Blackamoor-style brooch in front of his wife at Buckingham Palace.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombshell Netflix documentary was released yesterday

Author Afua Hirsch (pictured) brands the Commonwealth Empire 2.0 in Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary, before describing Harry as ‘anti-racist’

There is also a suggestion that the UK is racist and more obsessed with race than the US, with Meghan declaring that she ‘wasn’t really treated like a black woman’ until she came to Britain.

And in a swipe at the choice of wives by his male relatives, viewed as an attack on his father and other senior royals, perhaps even his brother William, Harry insisted that his decision to marry Meghan sets him apart from his family because it was ‘from his heart’ and not because she ‘would fit the mould’.

He said his wife being an American actress ‘clouded’ his family’s view of her – and they believed it wouldn’t last.

In the third episode of the series, writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsh – author of the 2018 memoir Brit(ish) – described the Queen’s beloved Commonwealth as being ‘Empire 2.0’ before then going on to describe Prince Harry as ‘anti-racist’.

Discussing institutional racism in the UK, Afua said: ‘Britain calculated that it needed to grant these countries independence in a way that protected its commercial and capitalist interest. So it created this privileged club called the Commonwealth.

‘The Commonwealth is still described as a club of friends who share common values. I find that language really problematic.

‘I sometimes call the Commonwealth ‘Empire 2.0′ because that is what it is.’

The Commonwealth was founded in December 1931 and currently contains 54 countries. According to the Royal Family’s website, the purpose of the orgnisation is to ‘foster international co-operation and trade links between people all over the world’.

The episode then tells the story of the murder of Stephen Lawrence and shows Harry speaking at a memorial to him, 26 days before his and Meghan’s wedding.

Afua said the black community ‘really appreciated’ his speech, saying his and Meghan’s attendance was ‘really significant’.

She added: ‘It represented a direct attempt to speak to the pain many people still feel as a result of the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

‘And that was really welcomed by many black communities in Britain. I always perceived Prince Harry as just another senior royal, a little bit racist, very ignorant.

Prince Andrew has been pictured out riding around Windsor this morning

It is the first time the Duke has been pictured since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s documentary dropped

‘But I have watched him on this journey and seen that he has really embraced the education that is required for someone like him to transform himself into an anti-racist.’

Elsewhere in the series, author Kehinde Andrews claims ‘nothing has changed’ from the UK’s colonial past, apart from the Royal Family’s ‘better PR’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also discuss Princess Michael of Kent a Blackamoor-style brooch to a pre-Christmas event the Duchess of Sussex attended in 2017. She was forced to apologise.

Harry said: ‘In this family sometimes your part of the problem rather than part of the solution. And there is a huge level of unconscious bias. The thing with unconscious bias is actually no one’s fault.

Meghan adds: ‘Obviously now everyone is aware of my race because they made it such an issue when I went to the UK. Before then. I wasn’t really treated like a black woman’.

In response to the bombshell series, Tory MP Bob Seely has argued that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex should be stripped of their royal titles.

The Isle of Wight MP said the couple were ‘monetising’ their titles with ‘aggressive’ and ‘unbelievable’ attacks on the Royal Family and Britain.

Backbench Bills rarely become law, but Mr Seely said presenting the proposals to the House will be ‘a start’.

Biden meets with Prince William during Boston swing

As President Biden signed legislation Friday averting a national rail strike, a group of railroad workers blasted both political parties for what it characterized as “despicable” treatment from both political parties.

The Railroad Workers United coalition took aim at Biden and Democrats for passage of a bill that denied unions “the right to bargain collectively and to freely engage in strike activity if and when the members see fit.” And the coalition, which draws members from multiple unions but does not represent the full array of them, was unhappy with the fate of a second bill, passed by the Democratic-led House but blocked by Republicans in the Senate, that would have added seven days of paid sick leave to the deal imposed upon them.

MLB rumors: Aaron Judge meets with Giants, could get offer soon; Red Sox sign lefty reliever

The Thanksgiving holiday is upon us but that doesn’t mean hot stove activity will slow to a crawl. Plenty of signings and trades have been finalized during the long holiday weekend over the years and this offseason figures to be no different. Here are Wednesday’s hot stove rumors as you await Turkey Day.

Judge meets with Giants

Aaron Judge, the No. 1 available free agent, met with Giants representatives in San Francisco on Tuesday, including members of ownership, reports MLB Network’s Jon Morosi. Morosi anticipates a formal offer could come later this week and that Judge could sign by the end of the Winter Meetings in two weeks. To date Judge has only met with the Giants and, of course, the Yankees.

For what it’s worth, Giants outfielder Joc Pederson is doing his part to recruit the reigning AL MVP:

Let it be known the Giants will open the 2023 regular season in New York against the Yankees. Pretty good chance Judge will be at Yankee Stadium on Opening Day next season. Which uniform will he be wearing? We’ll find out soon enough.

Yankees looking for bullpen help

In addition to trying to retain Judge, the Yankees are also seeking bullpen help, GM Brian Cashman told NJ.com. “I’m looking to improve our bullpen, but yeah, I believe we have a closer. That doesn’t mean we can’t play on someone who is a quote-unquote closer because ultimately the more the merrier. You want as many high-leverage guys that you can collect as you possibly can,” Cashman said.

The closer Cashman is referring to is All-Star Clay Holmes, who struggled in August and September and missed the end of the regular season with a shoulder injury. He returned in October and was lights out, though he was used carefully. This is New York’s bullpen at the moment:

King could be ready in time for spring training and, if he is, it likely pushes Abreu off the roster or Schmidt to Triple-A. The Yankees have a steady high-leverage group — Holmes, Loáisiga, and Peralta were all great in October — but there’s no such thing as too many quality relievers. With King’s status uncertain and Effross set to miss 2023, looking for more bullpen help is sensible.

Rangers a serious suitor for Rodón

The Rangers are a major player for free agent lefty Carlos Rodón, reports MLB.com. Texas has already added Jake Odorizzi and retained Martín Pérez this offseason, though they’re expected to pursue a top of the rotation starter as well, and Rodón is one of the best available. Our R.J. Anderson ranked the southpaw the No. 8 available free agent this offseason.

At the moment, Odorizzi and Pérez are penciled into the rotation alongside Jon Gray and likely Dane Dunning. Internal candidates for the No. 5 spot include Glenn Otto, Cole Ragans, and maybe Spencer Howard. Clearly, there is room for improvement there. The Rangers want to sign a frontline starter to help them contend and also push the kids down a peg on the depth chart.

Red Sox sign Rodríguez

The Red Sox have signed lefty reliever Joely Rodríguez to a one-year contract with a club option, the team announced Wednesday. He will earn $1.5 million in 2023 with a $500,000 buyout of a $4.25 million option, according to The Athletic. The 31-year-old southpaw was slightly more effective against righties (.625 OPS) than lefties (.645 OPS) this season. Rodríguez and Josh Taylor, who did not pitch in the big leagues due to injury in 2022, figure to be manager Alex Cora’s two lefty relievers next season.

Exclusive: Nvidia offers new advanced chip for China that meets U.S. export controls

OAKLAND, Calif., Nov 7 (Reuters) – U.S. chip maker Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) is offering a new advanced chip in China that meets recent export control rules aimed at keeping cutting-edge technology out of China’s hands, the company confirmed on Monday.

Nvidia responded to Reuters’ reporting that Chinese computer sellers are advertising products with the new chip.

The chip, called the A800, represents the first reported effort by a U.S. semiconductor company to create advanced processors for China that follow new U.S. trade rules. Nvidia has said the export limitations could cost it hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

U.S. regulations set in early October effectively banned export of advanced microchips and equipment to produce advanced chips by Chinese chipmakers, part of an effort to hobble China’s semiconductor industry and in turn the military.

In late August, Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices Inc AMD.O both said that their advanced chips, including Nvidia’s data center chip A100, were added to the export control list by the U.S. Commerce Department. The Nvidia A800 can be used in place of the A100 and both are GPUs, or graphics processing units.

Such advanced chips can cost thousands of dollars each.

“The Nvidia A800 GPU, which went into production in Q3, is another alternative product to the Nvidia A100 GPU for customers in China. The A800 meets the U.S. Government’s clear test for reduced export control and cannot be programmed to exceed it,” a Nvidia spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters.

Nvidia declined comment on whether it consulted the Commerce Department about the new chip. A Commerce Department spokesperson declined to comment.

At least two Chinese websites by major server makers offer the A800 chip in their products. One of those products previously used the A100 chip in promotional material.

A distributor website in China detailed the specifications of the A800. A comparison of the chip capabilities with the A100 shows that the chip-to-chip data transfer rate is 400 gigabytes per second on the new chip, down from 600 gigabytes per second on the A100. The new rules restrict rates of 600 gigabytes per second and up.

“The A800 looks to be a repackaged A100 GPU designed to avoid the recent Commerce Department trade restrictions,” said Wayne Lam, an analyst at CCS Insight, basing his comments on the specs shared by Reuters, and noting that eight is a lucky number in China.

“China is a significant market for Nvidia and it makes ample business sense to reconfigure your product to avoid trade restrictions,” said Lam.

Lam said the chip-to-chip communications abilities of the A800 represented a clear performance downgrade for a data center where thousands of chips are used together.

Major Chinese server makers Inspur and H3C which offer servers with the new chips did not respond to requests for comment. Neither did chip distributor OmniSky, which posted the A800 specs online.

Nvidia has said that about $400 million worth of chip sales to China could be impacted in its fiscal third quarter ended in October due to the limits on high-end chips. Having a replacement chip could help lessen the financial blow. The company is to report quarterly results on Nov. 16.

WNBA star Brittney Griner meets with U.S. Embassy officials in Russia

Comment

U.S. Embassy officials in Russia have met with imprisoned WNBA star Brittney Griner, the White House said Thursday.

“We are told she’s doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard Air Force One after the State Department confirmed the meeting.

Griner has been sentenced to 9½ years in prison for bringing less than a gram of cannabis oil, which is illegal in Russia, into the country. She has been imprisoned since her Feb. 17 arrest.

Last week, a Russian court rejected Griner’s appeal of her prison sentence.

Jean-Pierre said Thursday that Russia has continued to refuse a “significant offer” from the United States to “resolve the current unacceptable and wrongful detention” of Griner and Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine also imprisoned in Russia. Just last month, Jean-Pierre told reporters that Russia had yet to respond to the “serious” proposal the Biden administration made in July to free Griner.

“Despite a lack of good-faith negotiation by the Russians, the U.S. government has continued to follow up on that offer and propose alternative potential ways forward with Russians through all available channels,” Jean-Pierre said on Thursday. “This continues to be a top priority.”

Jean-Pierre, however, offered no details on any alternative proposal offered to Russia.

In a tweet Thursday, State Department spokesman Ned Price said the U.S. Embassy representatives who met with Griner “saw firsthand her tenacity and perseverance despite her present circumstances.”

“We continue to press for the immediate release of Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan and fair treatment for every detained American,” Price said.

Spokespeople for Griner’s family did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the embassy officials’ visit.

The U.S. government has long characterized Griner’s arrest as a “wrongful detainment.”

Last week, after the Russian court’s dismissal of her appeal, Griner’s attorneys said they would confer with their client about the possibility of further appeals, and that they intended to make use of “all the available legal tools.” Once the appeals process is over, she is set to be transferred to a penal colony.

Griner, a 6-foot-9 center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was detained in February while trying to enter Russia at the Sheremetyevo International Airport near Moscow, where she plays during the WNBA offseason. She turned 32 last month while in prison, an occasion family and friends used to call for her release and safe return to the United States.

In August, Russia acknowledged for the first time that negotiations were underway to release Griner and Whelan, but it did not confirm media reports indicating a potential swap for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer serving a 25-year sentence in the United States.

Griner and Whelan’s families met with President Biden at the White House in September to discuss their relatives’ imprisonment. At the time, White House spokesman John Kirby told reporters that Biden is “not going to let up” in his efforts to get Russia to free Griner and Whelan.

“We want these two individuals home back where they belong with their families,” Kirby said.
