Critics Share Strong Reactions to Marvel Sequel

The passing of Black Panther‘s Chadwick Boseman shocked the world back in 2020. The loss of the legendary actor was a heavy weight on the world’s shoulders. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler even recently admitted that he thought about “walking away from this business” altogether.

Thankfully, he didn’t, and the creatives behind the scenes pulled together to continue Wakanda’s legacy in hopes of honoring the late actor. Now, the world is being gifted with a movie that is a celebration of Boseman, and his unforgettable character, T’Challa.

There’s no doubt that the movie will be an emotional ride for anyone who watches, and potentially one of the hardest watches the MCU will ever have.

While fans will have to wait a little bit longer, select members of the press have now had the opportunity to see the entirety of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

So what did they think?

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever First Reviews

Marvel

Select press have finished their screenings of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and their social media reactions are starting to flood the internet.

Orlando Maldonado from Rotten Tomatoes proclaimed the film to be “outstanding,” and “handles loss, grief and revenge with a maturity and seriousness rarely seen in the MCU:”

“Wakanda Forever is outstanding. It handles loss, grief and revenge with a maturity and seriousness rarely seen in the MCU. Black Panther continues to be their crown jewel. Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett and Tenoch Huerta all bring some of the best acting I’ve seen all year.”

Press member Kevin McCarthy made it clear that the film “is a beautifully cathartic tribute to the legacy of Chadwick Boseman:”

“WAKANDA FOREVER is a beautifully cathartic tribute to the legacy of Chadwick Boseman. Reminds us of his monumental impact & that he’s truly still here with is. Great performances from Gurira, Bassett, Wright & Thorne. Huerta was INCREDIBLE. Loved Rihanna’s song & Ludwig’s score.”

Charles Pulliam from Verge praised it for “[centering] grief and the grieving process rather than superheroics:”

“Wakanda Forever’s bigger in scope and scale than Black Panther, but its story is also one of Marvel’s most intimate and heartfelt. It’s definitely a Comic Book Movie, but it’s one that centers grief and the grieving process rather than superheroics and spectacle. Full review soon.”

Ryden Scarnato from Heroic Hollywood strongly believes that “there’s never been a CBM like it:”

“Black Panther: WakandaForever is a powerful film and a great tribute to Chadwick Boseman. There’s never been a CBM like it. Really strong performances all around too. Namor’s motivations were a little weak and I felt the runtime, but it’s still towards the top of Phase 4 for me.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Brian Davids revealed that the movie “mostly abandons the studio’s trademark tone:”

“Black Panther: WakandaForever is Marvel’s most poignant and powerful film to date. It’s heavy and dark in the way that it needed to be, and mostly abandons the studio’s trademark tone. The craft work levels up in every conceivable way, and the performances rise to the occasion.”

Film Critic Fico Cangiano from CineXpressPR specifically praises Letitia Wright and Tenoch Huerta, while also noting that “the mid-credits scene is really moving:”

Wakanda Forever is fantastic! Coogler delivers a soulful, wondrous sequel that packs an emotional punch & effectively explores relevant world themes. A beautiful tribute to Boseman’s legacy. Letitia & Tenoch are great, & the mid-credits scene is really moving.”

Travis Hopson from Punch Drunk Critics pointed out how “the intro of Namor was incredible,” and the film’s overall plot was “packed with emotionally charged twists:”

“Wakanda Forever is exactly the cathartic experience I hoped it would be, helping us move past our grief while watching the Wakandans fight to do the same. The intro of Namor was incredible, the story bittersweet and packed with emotionally charged twists.”

The Direct’s own Jack McBryan declared that Wakanda Forever is “easily the best MCU project of Phase 4,” while also strongly praising the movie’s score:

“Wakanda Forever is phenomenal. Easily the best MCU project of Phase 4. I can not understate how masterful the score is from start to finish. There are no weak links in the cast, but I have to give a special shoutout to Angela Basset and Letitia Wright who really blew me away.”

Sean O’ Connell, of Cinema Blend, called Tenoch Huerta’s Namor “a FORCE,” and “better than [he had] hoped:”

“Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: WakandaForever, above all else, is cathartic. An emotional movie about loss, legacy and healing. The story is intimate, but vast with global power struggles and palace intrigue. Tenoch Huerta’s Namor is a FORCE, better than I hoped. So much to discuss.”

Critic Samuel Leggett Jr. mentioned how “the raw emotions on and off screen can be felt throughout:”

“Wakanda Forever is easily the best Marvel film since Avengers: Endgame. The scope, the camera work, the acting, and the raw emotions on and off screen can be felt throughout! This is the Marvel I’ve missed! I had one word in my heart all night; “WOW…”

Collider’s Steven Weintraub noted that he’s aware many won’t believe the hype coming out of a world premiere, but hammered down on how “[the] movie is awesome:”

“I know you don’t believe when people come out of a world premiere and say a movie is awesome….but Black Panther: WakandaForever is a fantastic sequel and a great movie. I knew it’d be emotional and it was. Expect your eyes to leak. Great job Ryan Coogler”

Perri Nemiroff, also from Collider, called it “an immensely powerful story of forging forward:”

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is excellent. An immensely powerful story of forging forward—shattering at times, but also beautifully cathartic and heartening. Cannot get over how well the film earns that title.”

She continued in a second tweet, pointing out that Marvel “couldn’t have found a better Namor:”

“Continues to be one of my favorite ensembles out there. M’Baku is still my #1, but Letitia Wright’s Shuri is quite the beating heart of this film. And Tenoch Huerta? They couldn’t have found a better Namor.”

Wakanda Forever!

It certainly seems like Wakanda Forever will be just as emotional as expected.

Somehow Ryan Coogler seems to have pulled it off and delivered a fantastic movie—possibly even one of Marvel Studios’ best if these reactions are to be believed.

It sounds like there’s also a shift in tone away from the usual Marvel Studios that’ll make Wakanda Forever a particularly special journey. If there was ever an MCU project that shouldn’t be brought down by an overly comedic tone, this would be the one.

Tenoch Huerta’s Namor seems to have gone over fantastically, with not a negative word on his character’s introduction in sight. The character is a massive part of the Marvel world in the comics, so to hear that he was done justice will undoubtedly please many.

The acting, in general, seems to be a highlight of the project—which isn’t surprising given how personal the film was for nearly everyone involved.

With the level of quality that this movie seems to be, maybe Marvel Studios will start considering Ryan Coogler to direct Avengers: Secret Wars.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters worldwide on November 11.

Marvel Just Replaced a Key Netflix Daredevil Character In She-Hulk Episode 5

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has brought one shocking revelation after another through its first five episodes, from the unexpected relationship between Madisynn and Wong to the long-awaited social media reign from Jameela Jamil’s Titania. But with each week that passes, one other name has been consistently on MCU fans’ minds ahead of his hotly anticipated comeback: Daredevil.

Warning – the rest of this article contains spoilers for Episode 5 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

In exciting fashion, the first signs of Matt Murdock’s red-suited alter-ego came to the screen in Episode 5 when the camera panned past his red outfit and landed on the new golden-horned mask that he will don in a later episode. While the jury is still out on where Matt himself is, fans now know that his suit is made by Luke Jacobson, the very same person who helped Jen upgrade her own wardrobe.

On the one hand, it’s a thrilling development as fans know that the Man Without Fear is finally inching closer towards his first action in a superhero outfit on Disney+, which was shown off through the promotional tour for She-Hulk. Additionally, it brings some of his potential past into question with discussions still raging about whether Charlie Cox’s work as Daredevil on Netflix is canon with the MCU – particularly thanks to one character that was replaced in Episode 5.

MCU Trades Daredevil Suit Designer for She-Hulk’s

Episode 5 of Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law confirmed that Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock is now working with Los Angeles-based designer Luke Jacobson on his Daredevil costume.

Marvel Studios

This suit was teased in the episode’s final seconds as the camera zoomed in on a package with a new gold mask, complete with horns on the top. This is the very same mask that fans saw Daredevil use in a couple of seconds of footage from trailers that premiered during She-Hulk‘s promotional run.

Marvel Studios

With Murdock and Jacobson now working together, this indicates that the LA designer has taken over for Melvin Potter from the Daredevil series to make Matt Murdock’s suit, should the Netflix original be considered canon with the MCU.

Netflix

Potter was the character who originally made Daredevil’s main suit at the end of Season 1, although things took a turn for the worse later in the series. He was coerced by Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin to make a new suit for Ben Poindexter/Bullseye in order to frame Matt Murdock, although Potter eventually told Murdock about the plan.

The costume designer ended up getting caught by the FBI for a parole violation while Murdock took down Bullseye and Kingpin, and Potter was eventually put in jail.

Should this storyline be canon in the MCU, this would likely be the reason that Murdock goes to Jacobson looking for a new Daredevil suit. Potter wouldn’t be able to make one from prison, and it would also give him a chance to get something new to try to separate himself from the Bullseye incident.

Daredevil’s Murky Future in the MCU

She-Hulk will be the first time that fans see Daredevil out of his natural New York City habitat as he interacts with Marvel’s other premier lawyer on the west coast. And once he comes, some of those questions about the canon status of Daredevil from Netflix may be answered, but this episode still leaves those mysteries open-ended.

It makes perfect sense why Matt Murdock would have to find a new suit designer if Melvin Potter is still in prison, although it’s still unknown what exactly drives him to fly 3000 miles away from his Hell’s Kitchen home. Another point is that it would be difficult to get a superhero costume like his through airport security if he chose that travel option, with the drive likely being something he couldn’t tackle due to his vision imparity.

On the other hand, this could simply be a way to have the Man Without Fear get a fresh start in the MCU, as he could be early in his run as a hero or simply getting an upgrade to his outfit. And in the end, this may not even be a question that’s answered in She-Hulk’s solo series, as Daredevil will only be around for one of the next four episodes.

Hopefully, more of these questions will be answered for Cox’s fan-favorite hero, especially with just over 18 months until he takes on his next solo journey in Daredevil: Born Again. With this development being so fresh, things could change drastically for the blind lawyer as his tenure in the MCU pushes forward.

The first five episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law are available to stream on Disney+.

Marvel Reveals MCU Phase 5 Schedule, Gives First Phase 6 Details

The next two years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were fully revealed at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, with a few tantalizing hints about what lies beyond. Phase 5 of the MCU kicks off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania on Feb. 17, 2023. It’ll be followed by Disney Plus series Secret Invasion in spring 2023, before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 5, 2023.

Echo and season 2 of Loki land on Disney Plus in summer 2023, with The Marvels coming to theaters on July 28, 2023.

Ironheart comes to the streaming service in fall 2023, Blade lands in theaters Nov. 3, 2023, while Agatha: Coven of Chaos will arrive on Disney Plus in winter 2023 or 2024.

Captain America: New World Order comes to theaters in May 3, 2024, Daredevil: Born Again will hit Disney Plus in spring 2024 and Thunderbolts will round out Phase 5 when it lands in theaters on July 26, 2024.

Marvel also gave us the first details about Phase 6 movies, which will include Fantastic Four on Nov. 8, 2024, Avengers: Kang Dynasty on May 2, 2025, and Avengers: Secret Wars on Nov. 7, 2025. It was revealed that Phases 4, 5, and 6 will be collectively known as The Multiverse Saga, mirroring Phases 1, 2 and 3’s Infinity Saga. It seems like Kang the Conqueror will be the main villain of this era.

Fans are particularly excited about Charlie Cox returning as Daredevil, given the popularity of the Netflix show and his alter-ego’s brief appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Born Again will see him face off against Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Wilson Fisk (who showed up in Hawkeye) again.

Daredevil also shows up — in costume —  in the new trailer for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which kicks off on Disney Plus on Aug. 17. That and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which also got a Comic-Con trailer ahead of its Nov. 11 theatrical release, will represent the end of Phase 4.

On Friday, Marvel revealed a bunch of animated series coming to Disney Plus over the next few years. What If…? season 2, Marvel Zombies and Spider-Man: Freshman Year are apparently part of the MCU canon, while X-Men ’97 and  I Am Groot are seemingly set it separate continuities.

Marvel Studios Hypes Up ‘Giant’ MCU Comic-Con Event This Weekend

San Diego Comic-Con is back in person for the first time since 2019, and Marvel Studios is present in a big way. After some initial concern that the studio may not attend this year’s event, or perhaps do so in a reduced capacity, the MCU’s presence at SDCC has been exciting already and there’s still so much more to see.

Friday brought a major slew of announcements and confirmations regarding the MCU’s animated slate. From Marvel Zombies being announced as the first mature rated series in MCU history to an exciting look into some special guests set to show up in Spider-Man: Freshman Year, there’s already been a lot to talk about.

On top of that, fans have an even bigger surprise waiting for them on Saturday, it seems. A Marvel Studios executive gave those tuning in plenty of reason to be excited about what the main panel might bring.

Kevin Feige to Host Giant Panel at SDCC

Marvel

As posted on Twitter by Marvel Entertainment, Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming and Animation at Marvel Studios, hyped up a “giant” Hall H panel as part of Marvel’s presence at SDCC for Saturday, July 23.

Winderbaum said he knew fans were “excited to see what announcements are around the bend,” noting particularly that Marvel Studios president “Kevin Feige is gonna do the giant Hall H panel [Saturday].” The creative exec closed by assuring viewers that he wouldn’t “give any spoilers” but that there is definitely “some amazing stuff coming:”

“I know you’re excited to see what announcements are around the bend. We had a great animation panel. And, of course, Kevin Feige is gonna do the giant Hall H panel tomorrow. I’m not going to give any spoilers, but stayed tuned, there’s some amazing stuff coming.”

What Big Reveals Will Marvel Have at SDCC?

For many, confirmation that the presence at the main panel will be large will come as a welcome surprise. After some previous rumors that Marvel would save its big reviews for September’s D23 event, fans are eager for more information about what’s in store.

As Phase 4 progresses, much hyped films like No Way HomeMultiverse of Madness, and Love and Thunder have come and gone, eyes are turned toward the future. While many of the recent MCU announcements have been projects establishing new characters like Moon Knight and Miss Marvel, there’s a palpable yearning to see the big names take to screens both big and small once again.

The recent reveal of Kamala Khan as the MCU’s first mutant has turned many heads toward the idea of the X-Men appearing, and it’s already well known that the Fantastic Four will be making their debut in the setting at some point. Further details about these two teams will likely be among the most desired reveals for Saturday’s panel.

There is, of course, the elephant in the Phase 4 room: the absence of any Avengers projects. Over halfway through 2022, fans are now over 3 years separated from the release of Avengers: Endgame with no new title in sight. Could this “giant panel” set that right? That’s a question that will almost certainly be on everyone’s mind.

The X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and the return of the Avengers: they’re all long awaited, and Saturday’s panel could well be fans’ first glimpse at one or all of these projects, should Marvel Studios prove generous in their offerings. The only thing left to do is wait and see.

The panel is set to begin at 5pm PST/8pm EST on Saturday, July 23.

The Russo Brothers Reveal Their Dream MCU Project

Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo want to make Secret Wars.

During an interview with Deadline, the directing duo revealed that it’s actually their dream Marvel project… but wouldn’t confirm whether it’s actually on the cards.

“Our love for Marvel is based on the books that we read as kids, the books that we fell in love with,” said Joe. “The one series that we adored growing up was Secret Wars.”

Secret Wars was first published in 1984 as a twelve-issue limited series, an ambitious comic book crossover event that teamed The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and others as they were taken by an alien entity to a place known as Battleworld.

It also introduced the symbiote which would later become known as Venom.

How would all this transpose to the big screen? Well, it looks as though the Russos imagine it as a double feature, much like Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

“It’s incredibly ambitious,” he added. “It would be bigger than Infinity War and Endgame. But it’s a massive undertaking. Those two movies were very hard to make. So, trying to imagine making another two movies even bigger than those two? We’re going to have to sleep on that.”

The Russo brothers have been asked about Secret Wars for years, often giving cagey answers that suggest there’s more to the idea than a mere suggestion.
