Health officials conclude illness outbreak linked to D.C. Cobb’s restaurant in McHenry that left 173 people sick

Health officials say norovirus was identified as the illness that led to an outbreak at D.C. Cobb’s in McHenry which left over 160 customers sick after eating at the restaurant.

The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) reported on September 13 that they were investigating an outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness linked to D.C. Cobb’s, located at 1204 North Green Street in McHenry.

The health department identified an outbreak at the business after receiving complaints initially from 13 people who became ill after eating at the establishment.

Those who ate at the establishment in late August and early September were asked to complete a survey to assist MCDH in their investigation.

The health department announced Friday that they had completed their investigation into the outbreak.

“Foodborne illness investigations are a top priority to protect the public’s health. The MCDH investigation team appreciates the cooperation from the public to bring this complex investigation to a close,” said Susan Karras, MCDH’s Director of Public Health Nursing.

“The final report demonstrates the dedication and high level of work the MCDH team does every day to protect the public’s health in McHenry County,” Karras said.

A spokesperson for the department said that 168 patrons and five staff members were identified as becoming sick from the outbreak.

Norovirus was identified as the pathogen involved but the investigation could not determine exactly how it was introduced into the restaurant, the spokesperson said.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that spreads quickly from person to person or through contaminated items and it cannot be treated with antibiotics, health officials said.

The health department conducted inspections and provided corrective action to the restaurant.

“The management of D.C. Cobb’s fully cooperated with the illness investigation team and continues to work with Division of Environmental Health staff to implement additional strategies to prevent future public health concerns,” said Patti Nomm, MCDH’s Director of Environmental Health.

According to the final report, inspectors noted over 30 health and safety problems at D.C. Cobb’s during their inspections.

An employee preparing food was seen chewing gum and an employee who was wearing gloves and preparing food had wiped their gloves with a soiled rag and then handled clean dishes.

The report said food preparations were not always conducted in approved areas. “Failure to conduct food preparations in approved areas, supplied with hand sinks. Observed a branding iron in the basement break area. Hamburger buns were branded with the “DC” logo in this area.”

There were no disposable paper towels at the dish area kitchen handwashing sinks, the report said, adding that an employee was spotted using a soiled rag to dry their hands in the area.

The report listed numerous other examples of incorrect food handling and issues, including ill employees returning to work within 24 hours of a gastrointestinal illness.

Hampshire car crash: Wrong-way I-90 accident in McHenry County leaves 7 dead, including 5 children, Illinois State Police say

HAMPSHIRE, Ill. (WLS) — Questions remain after a mother from Rolling Meadows and five children were killed in a fiery crash on I-90 in McHenry County Sunday.

That sole survivor of the crash, Thomas Dobosz, 32, remains hospitalized at Loyola University Medical Center.

A neighbor told ABC7 he lost his wife and all of his children in the crash.

Investigators said just after 2 a.m. Sunday, Dobosz was driving westbound on I-90 near Hampshire in a blue Chevy van when the driver of a gray Acura, identified as 22-year-old Jennifer Fernandes of Carpentersville, was driving in the opposite direction and collided with Dobosz’s vehicle head on. Both cars became totally engulfed in flames.

Troopers said they found Fernandes dead on scene as well as all of Dobosz’s passengers, identified as 31-year-old Lauren Dobosz and five children: two 13-year-old girls, 7- and 6-year-old boys, and a 5-year-old girl.

Neighbors in Rolling Meadows said four of them were the couple’s kids.

“When you find out it is people you’ve known for many years, it kind of hits a little harder,” David Moreno, a neighbor of the Dobosz family, said. “Losing your family in a split-second like that is not going to be easy for anybody.”

“My understanding is one of the eldest daughters had a friend with them,” Moreno said. “I know it’s going to be devastating for the community just to know that it was somebody that people have known.”

Lauren Dobosz’s co-worker Kenny Felton is reeling with the sudden loss.

“She loved her kids and her husband,” Felten said. “That was her life.”

“He’s going to have a tough road ahead when he finds out what happened and just wish them all the best, and anything we can do, we’ll be here for them,” Felten said.

Felten said Lauren started working at Lulu’s Gaming in Rolling Meadows two months ago. He described her as creative and always willing to help.

“Especially when we first opened, she loved doing graphics and making T-shirts and stuff,” Felten said. “She offered to help us make T-shirts for our crew.”

He said she always talked about coaching cheerleading for the Oriole Park Falcons. Her husband Thomas was also involved with the football team.

“She was very instrumental in doing stuff for cheer and football, you could tell it was her life being a mom,” Felten said.

State Police are still trying to figure out why Fernandes was going the wrong way. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the five children.

The fatal crash also caused another collision.when a semi-truck had stopped to let a medical helicopter land, a second semi didn’t stop in time and rear ended it, officials said.

The trailer on one of them was torn open and the boxes inside scattered on the roadway.

One person had minor injuries from the second crash.

Child from McHenry County among dozens of victims groomed into making child pornography by California man

A California man has been charged after police say he groomed and obtained child pornography from over 100 children on social media, including a child victim from McHenry County.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding an online account that was uploading child sexual abuse material to the internet.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Rod Grassmann said investigators in December executed a search warrant at the residence of 24-year-old Demetrius Carl Davis, a resident of Sacramento County, California.

Numerous screen recordings were discovered stored on Davis’s digital devices depicting children engaged in sexual acts.

Grassmann said that Davis is suspected of generating numerous fake social media accounts portraying himself as a female child named “Lizzy.”

He used the accounts to befriend and communicate with children on the internet in order to groom them.

After establishing a relationship with a child, Davis would direct them to produce child pornography and engage in sex acts with other children, Grassmann said.

Over 80 child victims have been positively identified across the United States, two of which reside in Illinois.

One of the victims includes a 13-year-old from Bull Valley, which is near Woodstock. The second Illinois victim is a 6-year-old from East Dubuque.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is assisting police in identifying victims that reside internationally, Grassmann said.

Davis is believed to have communicated with over 100 children between late 2020 and December 2021.

“Please check your children’s electronic devices if there is a way they could have had internet contact with people you are not familiar with,” Grassmann said.

Parents who believe their child may have engaged in illicit communications or sent illicit content to a subject named Lizzy over social media are asked to notify the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office at 916-874-3002 or by emailing ICAC@SACSheriff.com.

Davis is being held without bail on felony charges.

Fox News, Britt McHenry, Tyrus voluntarily dismiss sex misconduct suit

Britt McHenry’s sexual harassment lawsuit against Fox News and George “Tyrus” Murdoch has been voluntarily dismissed by the parties involved.

“I am very proud to have to stood up for my rights and hope that I have empowered other women to do the same,” McHenry said in a statement provided to USA TODAY. “Although I fully stand by the truth of my allegations, I am pleased to put this matter behind me and move forward with my career.”

Fox News also confirmed McHenry’s departure from the cable-news network.

“While Fox News is confident it would have prevailed in the lawsuit, we are pleased that we have been able to resolve this matter without further litigation,” the network said in a statement.

According to documents filed in New York district court Monday, attorneys for Fox, McHenry and Murdoch agreed to dismiss the December 2019 suit, in which McHenry levied sexual harassment allegations against her former Fox Nation co-host Murdoch, now a contributor on Fox News late-night show “Gutfeld!”

Britt McHenry sues Fox News and co-host Tyrus for sexual harassment, retaliation

Murdoch hosted the show “Un-PC” with McHenry from December 2018 to February 2019 on Fox Nation, the subscription-based streaming spin-off of Fox News. In addition to alleging harassment by Murdoch, McHenry claimed in her lawsuit Fox retaliated against her when she came forward with her accusations.

Murdoch’s attorney Tom Clare said in a statement to USA TODAY that his client is “pleased that the parties have reached a settlement in which the claims against him will be dismissed with prejudice.”

“Tyrus continues to dispute and deny the allegations made against him in the lawsuit and, consistent with that view, will not be making any financial payments,” Clare added.

McHenry’s lawsuit named Fox News Network, Fox Entertainment Group, News Corp., Fox Corp. and Murdoch, among others. Her allegations included gender discrimination,  sexual harassment and retaliation, as well as intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Fox News, in a statement at the time, dismissed McHenry’s lawsuit and said the company fully investigated her allegations and took appropriate action. Murdoch denied the allegations through his lawyer, who said he would pursue defamation counterclaims.

In the suit, McHenry alleged Murdoch sent her sexually explicit text messages while they worked together and that her complaints about the harassment were ignored.

McHenry further alleged Fox News retaliated against her for speaking out against Murdoch by offering her fewer professional opportunities. Her lawsuit alleged the network conducted a “sham investigation” into her claims and said its counsel produced “fraudulent” photos of texts doctored by Murdoch to make it appear she was sexually explicit with him.

Two months after filing her lawsuit, McHenry revealed on Twitter she had a brain tumor. She underwent surgery to remove the tumor in March 2020.
