John Mayer announces solo acoustic tour

CNN
 —

John Mayer has announced a first-ever solo acoustic tour.

The 19-date tour will stop at arenas across North America and is set to kick off on March 11 in New Jersey, according to a press release. The tour ends in Los Angeles on April 14. Tickets go on sale on February 3 at 9am in the ticket buyer’s time zone.

“I knew one day I’d feel it in my heart to do an entire run of shows on my own again, just like those early days,” the crooner said on Instagram. He added that while an acoustic solo tour has been decades in the making, “I feel it now.”

Mayer also said that he’ll be playing old songs and some “you haven’t heard yet” that will be performed on acoustic and electric guitars, as well as on the piano.

Best known for his breakout single “Your Body is a Wonderland” off his 2001 debut album “Room for Squares,” the singer-songwriter’s other hits include “Gravity,” “Waiting on the World to Change” and “New Light.”

The Grammy winner’s solo tour will wrap up just in time for the start of Dead and Company’s final tour, a band with which Mayer has toured since 2015. Dead and Company’s final tour begins on May 19 in Los Angeles.

John Mayer reveals inspiration for ‘Your Body Is a Wonderland’

CNN
 —

John Mayer has put to rest the theory that “Your Body Is A Wonderland” is about one of his former celebrity girlfriends.

In a recent conversation on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast’s holiday special, the singer and songwriter talked about his hit 2002 single, which won him a Grammy.

“That was about my first girlfriend,” the 45-year-old Mayer said of the tune. “That was about the feeling, which I think was already sort of nostalgic… I was 21 when I wrote that song and I was nostalgic for being 16.”

There had been speculation that it was about actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, whom Mayer dated after it was released. Podcast host Alex didn’t suggest names but brought up that it was believed the song was inspired by a celeb.

“No, that’s one of those things where people just sort of formed that idea,” said Mayer. “It gets reinforced over the years, no, no, no. I had never met a celebrity when I wrote that song.”

He also said he doesn’t date much anymore.

“I look at it like this: Dating is no longer a codified activity for me,” he said. “It’s not patterned anymore.”

And since giving up drinking six years ago, Mayer said he no longer has “the liquid courage” when it comes to relationships.

Oscar Mayer is now selling frozen wiener pops

Oscar Mayer is selling its first-ever “Cold Dog,” a frozen pop that tastes like the brand’s hot weiner that allegedly boasts “both refreshing and smokey, umami notes” of a hot dog and topped with a mustard swirl. The idea stems from an Instagram post on Oscar Mayer’s account a few months ago, in which its followers originally deemed the idea “genius” in a poll.

“After the overwhelming fan excitement for our beloved Cold Dog, it was a no-brainer to make this hot dog-inspired frozen pop a reality,” said Anne Field, an Oscar Mayer spokesperson, said in a press release.

It’s not a nationwide release, however. The “Cold Dog” is now on at sale for $2 at select Popbar locations in Long Beach, New York City, New Orleans and Alpharetta, Georgia, while supplies last. Popbar is a chain of gelato shops that helped Oscar Mayer make this freakish flavor.

Oscar Mayer, owned by Kraft Heinz (KHC), is used to making people squirm to attract attention to its packaged products. Earlier this year it sold a bologna face mask that quickly sold out on Amazon.
In 2019, Kraft wrote down the value of its Kraft and Oscar Mayer brands by $15 billion because consumers have shifted their preferences away from processed foods.

Illini land Baylor transfer Matthew Mayer

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Illini got back in the transfer portal and landed another long, versatile wing.

Matthew Mayer announced on Friday he is transferring to Illinois after spending the last four years at Baylor. Mayer entered the NBA Draft with the option to retain his collegiate eligibility and also entered the transfer portal just prior to the May 1 deadline for immediate eligibility. He chose the Illini over three other finalists: North Carolina, Texas Tech and Memphis.

Mayer is the third player to join Illinois via the transfer portal since January. Big man Dain Dainja, also a Baylor transfer, joined Illinois at the semester break in January and wing Terrence Shannon Jr. signed a Big Ten Tender of Financial Agreement earlier this month.

Mayer was an integral role player for Baylor the last two seasons, which included a 55-9 overall record (27-5 Big 12) for the Bears, two No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament and the 2021 NCAA Tournament title.

During the Bears’ national championship season in 2020-21, Mayer came off the bench in all 30 games, averaging 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals while shooting 48.9% including 39.5% from three.

Last season, Mayer started all 33 games and averaged 9.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 0.8 blocks while shooting 40.9% including 32.4% from three.

Illinois has two open scholarships remaining and is in the middle of undergoing a significant roster overhaul. Trent Frazier, Da’Monte Williams and Alfonso Plummer each exhausted their collegiate eligibility. Kofi Cockburn declared for the NBA Draft for a third time and cannot withdraw from the draft process after entering three times. Both Austin Hutcherson and Jacob Grandison also declared for the draft, but have not announced their intentions for next season. Both have at least one year of eligibility remaining. Andre Curbelo (St. John’s), Brandin Podziemski (Santa Clara), Omar Payne (Jacksonville) and Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk (South Carolina) each entered the NCAA transfer portal.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, the Illini have the No. 9 recruiting class in the county, which consists of Skyy Clark (No. 29), Ty Rodgers (No. 51), Jayden Epps (No. 68) and Sencire Harris (No. 110).

What it means: Illinois continues to get longer on the wing with the addition of Mayer, who is 6-foot-9. Head coach Brad Underwood and his coaching staff are constructing a versatile, athletic team that, in theory, will be extremely switchable at every position. After years of playing with a dominant big man — one of the best in Illinois program history — and revolving the offense around Cockburn, Illinois should play entirely differently next season. Mayer furthers that and is a big get for Illinois via the transfer portal. He, like Dainja, was on Baylor’s 2021 national championship team and should help usher in a new era of Illinois basketball.

Defensively, Mayer can switch and play multiple positions, which should fit in perfectly to what Underwood is after with next season’s team.

“There’s a great advantage in big wings,” Underwood said last week when discussing the addition of Shannon. “We’ve been able to play a little bit smaller. We’ve gotten away with that with Kofi. I look back at my Stephen F. Austin teams, my Oklahoma State teams, we had big wings and they were great rebounders and very versatile. If you’re not going to have 7-foot, 300 in the middle, you better figure out how to rebound and do some things. The versatility that brings for with what we do on the defensive side really excites me.”

Pit-road fight between Ty Gibbs, Sam Mayer follows Brandon Jones’ Xfinity win at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Brandon Jones overtook Ty Gibbs on the last lap of a two-lap sprint to the finish and won at Martinsville Speedway on Friday night for his fifth career victory, and one that set off a brawl on pit road when it was over.

On the final restart, which followed a number of cautions, Gibbs opted to start on the inside lane and had to outrun Jones, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, also on the inside while running second. Jones got inside him several times, then finally grabbed the top spot while Gibbs got caught up in a mess.

“What a day,” Jones said after climbing from his car. “I can’t say that we could have played it out any better. … I had older tires than all those guys at the end.”

When it was over, Gibbs and longtime rival Sam Mayer, both of whom were racing for a $100,000 Dash4Cash bonus, came to blows on pit road. Gibbs was wearing his helmet, while Mayer was not, and when Mayer pushed him, Gibbs threw a punch and they came together in a melee as others tried to break it up.

“I tried to talk to him and he got all in my face and at that point, we’ve got to start fighting,” Gibbs said. “We got put in a bad position there. The only thing I’m mad about is [Mayer] didn’t have anything. He wasn’t going to get past [third-place finisher A.J. Allmendinger] and I just got hit in the left rear.”

But, Gibbs acknowledged, a week ago at Richmond Raceway, it was he who had to apologize to teammate John Hunter Nemechek for nudging him on the final lap to claim the victory, his series-best third through seven races.

Instead of a fourth win Friday night, he finished eighth.

Before the wild finish, Gibbs had emerged unscathed each time the last several of 16 yellow flags flew as cars spun behind him. Much of the field then crashed on the first attempt at a two-lap overtime sprint to the finish when Mayer, running second, caused Noah Gragson, running third, to spin, causing a major pileup even before the field made it into the first turn.

That was the final caution of the chilly night and brought out a red flag that lasted just under 20 minutes, setting the stage for the drama at the finish.

Landon Cassill came from nowhere to finish second, the first of four Chevrolets behind Jones’ Toyota as Allmendinger was third — and claimed the $100,000 bonus — followed by Austin Hill and Mayer.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who made his first career start on the 0.526-mile oval in his annual foray into the series, started at the back, never contended and was 11th.

It also was a difficult finish for points leader Gragson, who ran up front for much of the night but was relegated to 20th place after Mayer took him out.

Bob Saget’s Funeral Draws ‘Full House’ Cast, John Mayer and More

Bob Saget’s loved ones and friends, including many “Full House” cast members, gathered for the funeral of the late comedian on Friday.

According to TMZ, at least 300 people arrived at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in the Hollywood Hills to pay their respects to Saget, who died unexpectedly on Jan. 9 at the age of 65. Saget’s on-screen “Full House” children Jodie Sweetin, Candace Cameron Bure and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were all in attendance, and John Stamos and Dave Coulier served as pallbearers during the ceremony.

Other pallbearers included John Mayer, Norman Lear, Jeff Ross, Judd Apatow and Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, TMZ reports. Dave Chappelle, Kathy Griffin, Chris Rock and Seth Green were also at the funeral.

After the news broke of Saget’s death, there was an outpouring of tributes from his “Full House” co-stars and other members of the Hollywood community on social media.

“I am broken. I am gutted. I am in complete and utter shock. I will never ever have another friend like him. I love you so much Bobby,” Stamos wrote on Twitter.

Bure said, “I don’t know what to say. I have no words. Bob was one of the best humans beings I’ve ever known in my life. I loved him so much.”

Saget was found unresponsive in his room Sunday at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Orlando, Fla. and pronounced dead on the scene. His cause of death has yet to be determined, but police officials say there was no sign of drug use or foul play. He is survived by his wife, Kelly Rizzo, and children Aubrey, Jennifer Belle and Lara Melanie Saget.
