Hawaii Department of Health investigating case of acute hepatitis in child on Maui

The Hawaii Department of Health said it is investigating a report of acute pediatric hepatitis of unknown origin in a child living on Maui under the age of 10.

DOH said the child was hospitalized for several days with abdominal pain and fever at the end of April.

“An extensive medical investigation was performed and there are a number of laboratory test results outstanding,” said DOH in a statement. “At this time, no cause has been determined. DOH is collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify the cause of the hepatitis case.”

The CDC is investigating more than 100 children’s hepatitis cases with no known cause that have been reported in 24 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, according to Bloomberg News, including five deaths.

CDC on April 21 issued a nationwide health alert regarding a cluster of nine children identified with hepatitis of unknown origin in Alabama, all of whom were previously healthy. CDC said none of these children, ages 1 to 6, had COVID-19.

CDC asked all physicians to be on the lookout for symptoms and to report any suspected cases of hepatitis of unknown origin to their local and state health departments.

Maui Health updates visitor policy amid “rapid rise” in COVID-19 cases

Maui Memorial Medical Center. PC: Wendy Osher (8.16.21)

Maui Health’s Emergency Operations Center team is updating its visitor policy effective today, due to the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases in the community.

“It is evident that COVID-19 is actively spreading. Currently, the Maui County positivity rate is at 9.6%. Most concerning is the rapid increase of the highly transmissible Omicron variant on island,” according to Maui Health.

“This pace of increased community spread is all too familiar to Maui Health and with the many lessons learned throughout the duration of this pandemic, we are proactively instituting many of the safety precautions we know will help protect our employees, providers, patients, and visitors,” Maui Health announced in a press release. “This includes limiting visitation and access to Maui Memorial Medical Center.”

Effective Wednesday Dec. 29, 2021 no visitors will be allowed entry to MMMC, with the exception of the following:

  • One OB support person
  • One pre-existing American Disability Act conditions support person
  • One Parent/guardian of pediatric patients
  • Up to two visitors per patient for end of life, comfort care and/or significant changes in condition

“We understand the important role that loved ones provide in the health and well-being of our patients, but also recognize the need to reduce the potential and unintentional introduction of the virus into the hospital,” according to the Maui Health announcement.

The hospital team will continue to monitor the Maui County and state positivity rates for signs of reduced viral spread.  “In the interim, patients can connect with their loved ones virtually and our caregivers will help coordinate the use of a device if they do not have access to one,” according to the announcement.

Maui Health maintains that “the best protection from COVID-19 and its variants is the vaccine, especially the booster dose for those already fully vaccinated.”

Hawaii’s Maui weather: Heavy rainfall damaged homes, sparked evacuations and worries over possible dam failure

The Maui Fire Department reported it received more than a dozen calls for help from residents who were trapped in their homes because of rising flood waters, according to an update from the County of Maui.

“The current weather situation has created very dangerous flooding situation throughout the County of Maui, especially in east Maui,” Maui Mayor Mike Victorino said during a press conference Monday afternoon. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is a real flooding situation we have not seen in a long time,” adding that some residents told him that this is the worst flooding they’ve seen in over 25 years.

Heavy rains caused the water in the Kaupakalua Dam in Haiku to crest early Monday, and breach around 3:21 p.m. local time, according to a statement from the County of Maui.

Hawaii Emergency Management Agency ordered those downstream to evacuate and three shelters were opened for those in need.

The National Weather Service said that additional heavy rainfall could lead to a short-notice flash flood warning for areas downstream of the dam and advised residents to follow instructions provided by Maui emergency management officials.

The governor said he was ready to assist the area during evacuations.

“”The state is standing by to support the County of Maui as residents and visitors downstream of the Kaupakulua Dam evacuate at this hour. Please stay out of the area until the danger has passed and continue to monitor local media for updates,” Hawaii Gov. David Ige said in a statement.

All County of Maui parks were closed until further notice because of heavy rains and flooding, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced.

Residents describe flooding

Carmen Gardner told CNN said she has lived in the area for 40 years and has never seen flooding this bad.

She recorded videos showing how quick and forceful the water has flooded the area She said she was safe above the Kaupakalua Dam.

“Winter of 88-89 was some flooding during a downpour but never anything close to this,” she told CNN. “Kaupakalua Road looked like the Colorado River. It is below us, but there is a flash flood ongoing at the bottom (lower) edge of our property that appears to have already taken out one of the unpermitted structures they rented out.”

Gardner said the rentals below her appeared to be “damaged heavily.”

Ana Paula DeCarlo told CNN her family was safe although they were stuck at home due to the roadway washing out. She recorded video that showed water rushing over the roadway that used to have a small stream under it.

“Yes, it’s like a bridge, small one over a stream,” she said of the road. “It hasn’t stopped raining one second. We are about 15 minutes away from the dam.”

“This is our street right now. We can’t go anywhere. The street disappeared, it’s gone!,” she posted on Instagram.

CNN meteorologist Michael Guy and Amanda Jackson contributed to this report.

Hawaii dam: Evacuations ordered as Kaupakalua Dam on island of Maui is in danger of failure

Heavy rains have led to the dam cresting, the agency said.

“Failure of the dam will produce life-threatening flooding as well as significant property damage in areas downstream from the dam,” according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

The evacuation also comes at the same time as a flash-flood warning.

“”The state is standing by to support the County of Maui as residents and visitors downstream of the Kaupakulua Dam evacuate at this hour. Please stay out of the area until the danger has passed and continue to monitor local media for updates,” Hawaii Gov. David Ige said in a statement.

Maui County officials are advising that people near heavily flowing streams should also evacuate or seek higher ground. Evacuation shelters are being opened at the Paia Community Center and Hana High School.

All County of Maui parks are closing for the rest of the day because of heavy rains and flooding, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced.

The parks will remain closed until further notice. Parks will be assessed for reopening on Tuesday.
