Marvel Sequel Will Be His Last

Drax’s final ride comes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Ten years ago, when James Gunn cast former professional wrestler Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, some were skeptical. Sure, this dude was a charismatic wrestler, but could he act? Oh, how that has changed, now that Bautista’s breakout Marvel Studios role has propelled him into a diverse, impressive acting career. Though the character is a fan favorite, the actor reveals that he never wanted Drax to be his signature role and that he’ll officially be leaving it behind this May when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 his theaters.

“I’m so grateful for Drax. I love him,” Bautista told GQ magazine. “But there’s a relief [that it’s over]. It wasn’t all pleasant. It was hard playing that role. The makeup process was beating me down. And I just don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy—it’s a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic stuff.”

So, there are a few things to unpack here and we’ll start with what we know. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn confirmed on his Instagram Stories that, yes, the upcoming film will be the final time Bautista plays Drax. Does that mean Drax will be recast (which Bautista himself said he’s cool with)? Does he die? Does he just go off and leave the Guardians? Those answers will come in a few months. But, for now, we at least know where these feelings are coming from.

As for Bautista’s relief at leaving it behind, you almost understand that too. While Drax is a big, boisterous character, matching Bautista’s physical stature, those aren’t the types of characters he’s most interested in playing. For example, in the GQ profile, he talks about just wanting to work more and more with director Denis Villeneuve, who cast Bautista in small roles in both Blade Runner 2049 and Dune (though the role is significantly expanded in this year’s Dune: Part Two). “If I could be a number one [on the callsheet] with Denis, I would do it for fucking free,” the actor said. “I think that’s how I could find out how good I could be. He brings out the best in me. He sees me in a different light, sees the performer that I want to be. That might be how I solve the puzzle.”

He’s also worked with the likes of Sam Mendes, Zack Snyder, Rian Johnson, and, later this year, M. Night Shyamalan. He’s not afraid to take a smaller role, as long as it means working with someone great. And while Gunn is certainly great, after three full films, a Holiday Special, and several other Marvel cameos, you understand how a performer like that is ready to leave it behind and try something new.

Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever First Reactions

Is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever a worthy successor to the throne? Reactions to the Marvel Studios sequel flooded social media following the Black Panther 2 world premiere Wednesday, where attendees were the first to witness filmmaker Ryan Coogler’s return to the kingdom of Wakanda. In the wake of King T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) death and the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, the African nation mourns their monarch as a new threat surfaces: the mutant Namor the Sub-Mariner (Tenoch Huerta). How was the Black Panther sequel received? Judging by the social media response, early viewers seem to agree: Wakanda Forever will long live as another jewel in Marvel’s crown.

Charles Pulliam (The Verge): “#WakandaForever’s bigger in scope and scale than #BlackPanther, but its story is also one of Marvel’s most intimate and heartfelt. It’s definitely a Comic Book Movie, but it’s one that centers grief and the grieving process rather than superheroics and spectacle.”

Fico Cangiano (CineXPress): “#WakandaForever is fantastic! Coogler delivers a soulful, wondrous sequel that packs an emotional punch & effectively explores relevant world themes. A beautiful tribute to Boseman’s legacy. Letitia & Tenoch are great, & the mid-credits scene is really moving.”

Samuel Leggett Jr (Critics Choice): “#WakandaForever is easily the best Marvel film since Avengers: Endgame. The scope, the camera work, the acting, and the raw emotions on and off screen can be felt throughout! This is the Marvel I’ve missed! I had one word in my heart all night; “WOW…'”

Ryden Scarnato (Heroic Hollywood): “#BlackPantherWakandaForever is a powerful film and a great tribute to Chadwick Boseman. There’s never been a CBM like it. Really strong performances all around too. Namor’s motivations were a little weak and I felt the runtime, but it’s still towards the top of Phase 4 for me.”

Sean O’Connell (CinemaBlend): “Ryan Coogler’s #BlackPantherWakandaForever, above all else, is cathartic. An emotional movie about loss, legacy and healing. The story is intimate, but vast with global power struggles and palace intrigue. Tenoch Huerta’s Namor is a FORCE, better than I hoped. So much to discuss.”

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda.

Wakanda may be without its king, but not without its protector: another character takes up the mantle of the new Black Panther to stop Namor from waging war against the surface world. Along with Huerta’s aquatic antagonist, the Marvel Cinematic Universe expands with the introduction of armored hero Ironheart (Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams), Wakandan warrior Aneka (Michaela Coel) of the Dora Milaje, and Talocan inhabitants Namora and Attuma (Mabel Cadena and Alex Livanalli).

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Review Embargo

Black Panther Double Feature

Tickets are now on sale for the Black Panther double feature, a back-to-back showing of 2018’s Black Panther followed by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. With a total runtime of 5 hours and 25 minutes, the epic event is in theaters for one night only on Thursday, November 10th.

Black Panther 2 World Premiere

Rather than the red carpet, the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever cast hit the purple carpet in Hollywood. Among the guests were Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, Disney CEO Bob Chapek, and Rihanna, who debuts new music and the original song “Lift Me Up” as part of the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack album. Mark Ruffalo Defends Marvel’s Output With a Side-Eye at Star Wars

While on a press tour for She-Hulk, Mark Ruffalo spoke with Metro about Marvel’s use of VFX and the enormity of the output from the studio. While he had only glowing praise for the leaps and bounds that CGI has taken over the past decade or so that he’s been involved with Marvel, he had some stronger feelings about the amount of “content” that Marvel puts out.

Ruffalo said that he’s not worried about the amount of work that Marvel releases. “I understand that these things run their course and then something else comes along. But the thing Marvel has done well is that, inside the MCU, just as they do with comic books, they let a director or an actor sort of recreate each piece to their own style, their likeness.”

A bold claim, considering that even as Marvel attempts to make in-roads into other genres with its work, there’s an overriding same-y tone and need for connection that sometimes frustratingly overrides that. And considering the new allegations about how Marvel films their movies, I don’t think that this is a very strong argument at all. Visual flair is well and good, but if you’re just offering variations on a theme is it really distinct?

Next, Ruffalo continues to dig his grave deeper by poking at the other big franchise that might be able to compete with Marvel’s output–fellow Disney megafranchise Star Wars. “If you watch a Star Wars, you’re pretty much going to get the same version of Star Wars each time… You’re always, really, in that same kind of world. But with Marvel you can have a whole different feeling even within the Marvel Universe.”

The thing is that part of me agrees with him: Star Wars does reuse the same stories and tropes, and seems to have an affinity for desert planets that I cannot truly comprehend, but to compare Marvel and Star Wars and act as if either one is superior to the other on an artistic basis of originality feels like a little bit of throwing stones in glass houses at this point. You’re playing the Hulk, sir, a character that has been adapted in largely similar ways out of the comics ever since Lou Ferrigno’s television Hulk first began airing in 1977, the same year the first Star Wars film released in theaters.

I’m not here to debate the artistic merits of Marvel vs. Star Wars, but to pretend for even a second like directors get more or less control within competing billion-dollar franchises is a fool’s errand. An aside here, but as soon as we start referring to any kind of art (even blockbuster movies) as “content” I feel as if we lose something, culturally speaking. Content feels clinical, it feels transactional in a way that makes me uncomfortable. I don’t want content, I want considerate, thoughtful work. I want people to know that this is handmade stuff, that this is done by real people doing real work. There is no such thing as Marvel content, but there is art, and if we treated these massive cultural moments with respect maybe we’d be able to change the culture.

So look, regardless of your feelings about the amount of work that any individual studio puts out, the fact that any actor is being asked to defend it might be a hint that there is, perhaps, too much out there—regardless of what fictional universe it’s from.

She-Hulk’s Comic-Con trailer spoils a cameo with a better cameo

Marvel Studios spent a good chunk of its time at San Diego Comic-Con talking about Daredevil, what with Charlie Cox’s version of The Man Without Fear getting his (second) solo show in Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again and Cox benefitting from the MCU hitting the retcon button haaaarrrrrd in a new animated series called Spider-Man: Freshman Year (where we will apparently find out that young Spidey met not only Cox’s Hornhead but new versions of Norman Osborn and Henry Osborn, plus Amadeus Cho and Nico Minoru, before the events of Captain America: Civil War).

But those aren’t the only places where Daredevil popped up this weekend: He also made a quick cameo in the new trailer for Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney At Law series, flipping into frame right at the end and wearing what appears to be a new costume inspired by his original black-and-yellow outfit from the comics (arguably his worst one, to be honest). The trailer cuts away before you see his face, so this could be some kind of cruel fake-out (get hyped, singular fan of D-Man!), but who else carries billy clubs and does flips like that?

Anyway, the rest of the trailer leans hard into comedy, just like the first one did, with Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters bantering with her cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) as he trains her in the ways of the Hulk and then getting into some fish-out-of-water hijinks when she returns to New York to start a new life as a giant, green attorney. That’s where she meets various superhero-adjacent characters, like Tim Roth’s Abomination (who was in the last trailer), Benedict Wong’s Wong (from Doctor Strange!), and a group of goons who appear to be classic Marvel villains The Wrecking Crew.

That’s all fun! And the implied existence of sex in the first trailer is even more implied here! Wow! But then Daredevil shows up and that’s all we want to talk and think about. Will She-Hulk and Daredevil get to have a courtroom scene? Will this show acknowledge any events from the Netflix Daredevil show? Will we get to see an appearance from Daredevil’s incorrigible twin brother Mike Murdock (who is definitely a real person and not Matt Murdock in a hat)?

We’ll find out on August 17 when She-Hulk: Attorney At Law premieres on Disney+.

Love and Thunder Reportedly Given Run Time Mandate

Thor: Love and Thunder has officially wrapped up its first weekend in theaters, tallying a sizable $302 million at the global box office. Now days after its release, the Taika Waititi picture is still dominating social chatter, largely due to its divisive nature. Fans and critics alike are split on their reception to the film, with many criticizing the film’s lack of focus and clarity.

As it turns out, a large part of that may be because Marvel Studios reportedly told Waititi to keep the film under two hours. The latest report comes from The Ringer-Verse’s Joanna Robinson, who says the filmmaker was told to keep the film short.

“Taika having a blank check on this is absolutely not the case. He got more leeway than he got with Ragnarok, but there was a mandate to bring this movie in under two hours. This comes in under two hours and they cut a ton of stuff out of this movie,” Robinson said on the latest episode of House of R.

She added, “Taika is on record as not being in director’s cuts. We know Jeff Goldblum, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey [were supposed to appear] and Simon Russell Beale appeared as Dionysus and had like two lines in this movie but has an above-the-line credit, so he was definitely supposed to be in this more. Gorr was definitely supposed to come in and kill a bunch of other people.”

Earlier this month, Waititi said director’s cuts “suck,” adding that his cut would only add a couple of jokes.

“I’ve been thinking about director’s cuts. I watch director’s cuts of a lot of other directors. They suck. Director’s cuts are not good. Directors need to be controlled sometimes and if I was to say, ‘ah you wanna watch my director’s cut? It’s four and a half hours long!’ It’s not good, at four and a half hours. There’s a lot of cup-of-tea breaks in there, you don’t even have to pause it,” Waititi explained to NME.

He added, “I’d say my cut would probably have a few more jokes in there. There might be a couple of deleted scenes but as I always say, a scene is deleted because it’s not good enough to be in the film. I think the deleted scenes section on the DVD, not that they use them anymore, should just be a list of the scenes and no links so you can’t click on them!”

Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarok, returns to direct Thor: Love and Thunder. He also co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, and Vin Diesel.

Thor: Love and Thunder is now in theaters.

Taron Egerton Hopes He’ll Get to Play Wolverine in the MCU

Ever since Fox got themselves snatched up Disney and Kevin Feige made it clear that the mutants would be making their way to the MCU eventually, there’s been no shortage of speculation about who’ll be playing the new batch of X-Men. Moreso than Professor X or Magneto, Wolverine is the one that everyone’s got some opinion on. These days, we now know there’s nothing stopping Hugh Jackman from coming back to the role (and the frankly absurd diet needed to maintain it) that launched him into cinematic stardom. But there’s been no shortage of folks who want someone new to take the reigns, and one actor is now specifically making their desires clear rather than simply dancing around the subject and hoping to be John Krasinski’d into an eventual film.

Specifically, it’s Taron Egerton of Kingsman and Rocketman fame (or more importantly, Moomintroll) who wants to get in on the comic book action. He said as such to the New York Times; while promoting his upcoming Apple TV+ show Black Bird, Egerton admitted that he has spoken with Marvel Studios employees, including Kevin Feige, about getting involved in the superhero game. While it’s something he’s hoping to take a shot at, he also knows that there’s some big shoes to fill, regardless of whoever eventually plays the character. “I’d be excited, but I’d be apprehensive as well,” he said. “Hugh is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it.” Back in 2019, the actor talked about being aware of fans wanting him in the role, and was flattered that they were rooting for him.

Talking with Feige raises the chances of Egerton getting a shot to play Wolverine just slightly, but it’s equally possible that Feige and crew have someone else in mind for him to play. Since Marvel has just so much stuff in various stages of production, we won’t really know what Egerton’s future is until we know. Maybe he’ll wind up being Wolverine, mayhaps he’ll get locked in for Human Torch or Nova. (Maybe he’d be a good Cyclops?) Either way, it’s doubtful that he won’t wind up playing a superhero eventually, since basically everyone does…it’s just a matter of whom it’ll be.

Thor Love and Thunder Trailer Taika Waititi, Hemsworth, Portman

After Thor: Ragnarok, fans obviously expected Thor: Love and Thunder to be wild. Just off-the-walls bonkers nonsense from the man who does that better than anyone: writer-director Taika Waititi. Now, the first trailer is here, and it delivers on that promise and more. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is, indeed, bringing the thunder. And we love it.

Thor: Love and Thunder opens July 8 in theaters only. It brings back Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, as well as all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Oscar winners Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, and a whole lot more. Many of which you see right here in this incredible trailer.

When last we saw the God of Thunder, he’d left New Asgard in the capable hands of Valkyrie, and set off back into the cosmos with the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Avengers: Endgame. As you can see this movie picks up from there and goes into places we’d never expect. Well, except for that whole Jane Foster becoming the Mighty Thor thing—that was revealed waaaay back at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 when Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige laid out the plan for Phase 4. At that time, Thor: Love and Thunder was one of the last entries. Now it’s finally coming and it will, from what we can tell, certainly be setting things up for the future.

Oh, and isn’t it wild that Thor: Love and Thunder is the first fourth Marvel Studios character movie? The Avengers got four movies but Iron Man and Captain America only got three. Does that make Thor the current crown jewel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Or is it just that Marvel couldn’t say no to another Waititi movie when he basically has his choice of projects, including Star Wars? Probably a bit of both. In the meantime, check out a new poster for the movie too.

Welp, Netflix is losing its Marvel shows

Before Disney+ monopolized the Marvel TV show game, Netflix had the best offering of Marvel-based series, with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. They were gritty. They could say “fuck.” And most importantly, the shows offered something deeper than the typical Marvel Studios blockbuster fare. But Netflix is losing those titles soon.

Deadline reports that Netflix’s license to the Marvel series is coming to an end, and Disney will be re-acquiring the rights. Unfortunately, this news had to come at the shortest month of the year, so there are only two more weeks until the shows are gone (for now) on March 1. Netflix is keeping true to the “keep mum on Marvel” mentality, and the streamer has not confirmed what will happen with those titles yet.

Deadline does say Netflix is expected to announce the shows’ new home soon, though. The new home will likely be Disney+, but it would still be a big gamble for the streamer, considering the streamer wouldn’t even allow the now-scrapped Lizzie McGuire reboot to contain any hint of the beloved character engaging in “adult behavior.” So how Disney work around shows that prominently feature topics like alcoholism and surviving abusive relationships? The House of Mouse has been careful to keep its squeaky clean image, so it’ll be interesting to see what comes of Jessica Jones and the rest.

In the meantime, there are certain A.V. Club staffers who’d be willing to shell out on bootleg Blu-Rays (though we can honestly do without Iron Fist—sorry!). We’ll even settle for those pixelated YouTube videos that are barely watchable. And if it does come to Disney+ acquiring the titles, the silver lining is that the shows can expand their fanbase even more, and give Marvel fans something to watch (or rewatch) while waiting for a new season of WandaVision.

Marvel Actress Evangeline Lilly Attended D.C. Anti-Vax Protest

Evangeline Lilly is at it again.

In a recent Instagram post, the Lost and Ant-Man and the Wasp actress said she traveled to Washington, D.C. this weekend to speak out in support of “medical sovereignty”—in other words, to protest vaccine mandates. Lilly attended the same protest where speaker Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a notorious anti-vaxxer, compared vaccine mandates to the Holocaust.

Lilly wrote Thursday that she believes “nobody should ever be forced to inject their body with anything, against their will” under threats including “violent attack,” “arrest or detention without trial,” homelessness and starvation, and “excommunication from society.” (Note: Nobody is forcing anyone to get the vaccine, and these threats are not real.)

“This is not the way,” she wrote. “This is not safe. This is not healthy. This is not love. I understand the world is in fear, but I don’t believe that answering fear with force will fix our problems. I was pro choice before COVID and I am still pro choice today.”

It’s unclear what Lilly’s vaccination status is; her post includes a photo of someone with a sign that reads “Vaxxed Democrat for medical freedom.” That said, her post carries a whole host of misleading implications. Vaccine mandates remain divisive among the public but no politician or official has called for punishing anyone who declines the vaccine. And as popular as the co-opting of “my body, my choice” rhetoric might be among anti-vaxxers, the parallels are questionable at best.

This is not, however, the first time Lilly has aired her dangerous views on COVID for the public. As the pandemic intensified within the U.S. in March 2020, the actress revealed that she had refused to self-quarantine despite living with her cancer-stricken father. She compared COVID-19 to a “respiratory flu” and accused the government of overreach comparable to “Marshall Law” [sic]. “There’s ‘something’ every election year,” she wrote.

Days later the actress posted an apology.

“I want to offer my sincere and heartfelt apology for the insensitivity I showed in my previous post to the very real suffering and fear that has gripped the world through COVID19,” Lilly wrote, in part. “ Grandparents, parents, children, sisters and brothers are dying, the world is rallying to find a way to stop this very real threat, and my ensuing silence has sent a dismissive, arrogant and cryptic message… When I wrote that post 10 days ago, I thought I was infusing calm into the hysteria. I can see now that I was projecting my own fears into an already fearful and traumatic situation.”

Lilly’s comments new and old have sparked comparisons to Black Panther actress Letitia Wright, who landed herself in hot water in 2020 by sharing a conspiracy theory video on Twitter that questioned the safety of potential COVID-19 vaccines. Last October, the actress denied a Hollywood Reporter dispatch that claimed she had espoused anti-vax views on the set of Black Panther 2, calling the report “completely untrue.” The production resumed in Atlanta in January, with Wright on board.

Marvel’s Hawkeye Fan Notices Major Avengers Continuity Error in First Episode

Marvel’s Hawkeye turns the clocks back for the opening scene of its first episode, revealing that Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop has been a part of the MCU since 2012’s The Avengers. In the first sequence we see a young Kate in her family home in New York, which is in the very middle of the Battle for New York from the first team-up movie of the MCU. The scene carries on for a few minutes, showing us her perspective on this life-changing event for her as a character and the MCU at large, but then one of its biggest scenes actually makes a huge continuity mistake.

First let’s think back to The Avengers movie, one of the biggest payoffs to the movie is the revelation of Stark Tower in the middle of New York. As fans know, the S, T, R, and K fall off throughout the battle with Loki, leading to the revelation of just the “A” on the Tower, setting up the eventual Avengers Tower as a key location in the MCU. If you recall to the moment when the letters on the Stark tower begin falling off, it all begins with the K, which flies down to the ground after Loki blasts it with his scepter. In Hawkeye however we see a shot of Kate Bishop looking up at Stark Tower in the aftermath of the attack, with both the A and the K intact. ALl of this was noticed by Reddit user /u/Tajul92, who made the photo below that you can see.

Frankly this isn’t a coffee cup in Game of Thrones style mess-up, but considering that the “K” in STARK is the first letter to fall it’s surprising that they’d miss this, especially with how meticulously they recreated the sequence from alternate perspectives (which you can watch by clicking here).

“The whole thing was completely done brand new, it was all new off the showroom floor, except there was one moment of Jeremy leaping off the building that we [used],” Director Rhys Thomas told The Wrap about recreating the scene. “But we also had to shoot the other side. So we had our double recreate the leap as well. I had this great chance to look at dailies from the original ‘Avengers,’ which was kind of cool.”
