Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first Netflix show to be about Invictus Games

Netflix today announced Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first TV series following their multi-million pound deal with the network, which will be a documentary series about the Invictus Games.

The programme, Heart of Invictus, will follow competitors around the world training for the Games at The Hague which had been expected to take place in 2020 but were delayed until next year due to the pandemic.

Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Productions are working with director Orlando von Einsiedel and producer Joanna Natasegara on the series which will follow both the athletes and organisers as they prepare for the event.

The Duke of Sussex, 36, who will appear on camera and be an executive producer, has been living in an £10million mansion in Montecito, California, with his wife Meghan, 39, since last summer after they both quit as senior royals.

The couple, who have also signed a multi-million-pound deal with Spotify and gave a bombshell interview to Oprah Winfrey last month, are expecting a baby girl while their son Archie will turn two next month.

Talking about the new show today, Harry said: ‘Since the very first Invictus Games back in 2014, we knew that each competitor would contribute in their own exceptional way to a mosaic of resilience, determination, and resolve.

‘This series will give communities around the world a window into the moving and uplifting stories of these competitors on their path to the Netherlands next year.

‘As Archewell Productions’ first series with Netflix, in partnership with the Invictus Games Foundation, I couldn’t be more excited for the journey ahead or prouder of the Invictus community for continuously inspiring global healing, human potential and continued service.’

Prince Harry’s statement about new Netflix series

‘Since the very first Invictus Games back in 2014, we knew that each competitor would contribute in their own exceptional way to a mosaic of resilience, determination, and resolve.

Harry previously explained the Netflix and Spotify deals in the Oprah interview by saying: ‘My family literally cut me off financially, and I had to afford security for us.’

Dominic Reid, chief executive of the Invictus Games Foundation, said: ‘We’re very excited about the opportunity to shine the global spotlight of Netflix on the men and women that we work with, in order to ensure that even more people can be inspired by their determination and fortitude in working towards their recovery.

‘This partnership will also bring in significant funding to the charity. We are extremely grateful to our Founding Patron for his continued efforts to support the military community, and for making this partnership happen.’

And Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s co-chief executive and chief content officer, said: ‘The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Archewell Productions team are building an ambitious slate that reflects the values and causes they hold dear.

‘From the moment I met them, it’s been clear that the Invictus Games hold a very special place in their hearts, and I couldn’t be happier that their first series for Netflix will showcase that for the world in a way never seen before.’

The announcement comes hours after Piers Morgan accused the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of ‘complete hypocrisy’ over their interview with Oprah and said he has the ‘universal support’ of the British public.

Morgan left his job on Good Morning Britain last month after saying he did not believe what Meghan had told Oprah.

The duchess said she was ignored when raising concerns about her mental health and that racist comments had been made before the birth of her son, Archie.

In his first TV interview since he departed Good Morning Britain, Morgan spoke to US conservative news personality Tucker Carlson and stood by his comments, accusing the couple of the ‘most extraordinarily disingenuous smear, hit job’ on the royal family.

Piers Morgan slams ‘stand-in weather guy’ Alex Beresford for ‘pre-meditated’ Meghan Markle attack that cost him his job on ITV’s GMB

Piers Morgan has slammed Alex Beresford for launching a ‘premeditated attack’ during their on-air Meghan Markle row that cost him his job at Good Morning Britain (GMB) in his first TV interview since he quit the show.

The 56-year-old journalist caused a social media firestorm last month after he said he ‘didn’t believe a word’ of what the duchess said during her extraordinary interview with US chat-show legend Oprah Winfrey.

Piers Morgan gave an hour-long interview to the Tucker Carlson Today programme on the Fox Nation streaming service

It led to an explosive on-air clash with GMB weatherman Beresford, who accused Morgan of ‘trashing’ the Suits actress before he stormed off set. Later that day, the MailOnline columnist quit the ITV breakfast show.

Sitting down with US TV host Tucker Carlson on Monday to tell ‘MY truth’ about the controversy surrounding his criticism of the Sussexes, Morgan said Beresford’s comments were part of a ‘premeditated attack’.

During his hour-long interview with the Tucker Carlson Today programme on the Fox Nation streaming service, Morgan hit out at Beresford, calling the 40-year-old ‘the stand-in weather guy’ and ‘not a journalist’.

He also revealed he was ‘disappointed’ by his co-host Susanna Reid’s apology after he stormed off set – but said he believed she may have acted ‘in the grip of fear’ of a ‘huge Twitter pile-on’ if she had defended him.

Morgan even poured cold water on allegations that Meghan received racist coverage in the British Press, saying: ‘I never saw that, I don’t believe that’ as he pointed to the media’s positive coverage of the Royal wedding in 2018.

Instead, he doubled down on his original comments, saying he was right not to believe the duke and duchess in their interview with Oprah because 17 of their claims have since been proven false, exaggerated or unverifiable.

And he said he has the backing of the public. Morgan said: ‘Old, young, black, white, it didn’t matter. They’ve been coming up to me in their droves all day every day.’

Morgan said people either agree with his comments on Meghan or defended his right to free speech. ‘The British people have seen through this,’ he told the Tucker Carlson Today programme on the Fox Nation streaming service.

Morgan said he has had a ‘lot’ of job offers since leaving Good Morning Britain and explored the circumstances surrounding his departure. He briefly walked off the set after a confrontation with weather presenter Alex Beresford.

Morgan described his former colleague as ‘the stand-in weather guy who does the weather occasionally’. He added: ‘He’s not a journalist. But he’s somebody I’ve helped with his career a number of times when he’s asked me to.’

Morgan accused Beresford of a ‘premeditated attack… on a personal level’.

He said he should not have walked off the set. And Morgan addressed his former Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid’s on-air statement regarding his departure. He said he ‘didn’t particularly like it’, but suggested she was ‘in the grip of fear’.

Morgan added: ‘I honestly think she was in the grip of fear. I think she was fearful that if she went too far in saying nice things about me, the same thing might happen to her, that there would be a huge Twitter pile on.’

In his interview with Carlson, which lasted for more than an hour, Morgan described Meghan, who rose to fame starring in TV drama Suits, as the ‘delusional duchess who is on the make’.

Criticising the couple for their commercial deals with the likes of Spotify and Netflix, Morgan said, ‘they’re not making all this money through talent – Meghan was an OK actress on a show not many people watched’.

And of Harry, Morgan praised his work in the Armed Forces, before adding: ‘What’s happened to that guy? That he’s turned into this whiny brat in his mid-30s complaining his dad isn’t still financing everything he does.’

Asked by Carlson what the future holds for the duke, 36, and duchess, 39, Morgan said: ‘She has a track record of ditching everyone and everything when they cease to be of use to her so my advice to Harry is make sure you remain of use.

‘And his primary use, it seems to me, is he has a royal title and she has been ruthlessly exploiting that title to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.’

He accused the couple of telling ‘so many ridiculous whoppers’ in their March interview with Oprah and dismissed claims he was racist for not believing them.

He said the interview was ‘tacky, tasteless, disingenuous, and I’m afraid, I believe, in some cases, downright lying on a global scale’.

And Morgan used his appearance on Carlson’s show to rail against what he described as the ‘woke mob’ and urged the public to ‘stand up and say ‘no”.

He pointed to Sharon Osbourne’s recent departure from a US chat show as an example of so-called cancel culture. Osbourne left The Talk after defending Morgan against allegations of racism over his comments on Meghan.

Fury as Charlie Hebdo magazine cover shows Queen kneeling on Meghan Markle’s neck

French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo has come under fire for a cartoon which shows the Queen kneeling on Meghan Markle’s neck, drawing parallels to the death of George Floyd.

The publication, which has faced scrutiny before for its controversial drawings, has sparked outrage again just days after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex claimed they experienced open racism from family members and staff in the royal family.

The image appears to be replicating the horrifying death of George Floyd who died after police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes , despite Floyd’s desperate pleas for help crying, ‘I can’t breathe’.

The latest cartoon on the French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo’s front page titled ‘Why Meghan quit Buckingham’ depicts the Queen kneeling on Meghan Markle’s neck as the Duchess says ‘because I couldn’t breathe anymore’, drawing comparisons to the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last May

The controversial cartoon, which has sparked outrage online and among campaigners and activists, comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey aired this week. Pictured: The Queen and Meghan Markle together in July 2018

During the interview (pictured), the royal couple claimed they experienced open racism from family members and staff in the royal family

On the front cover of the magazine, the cartoon is displayed with the headline: ‘Why Meghan quit Buckingham.’

The Queen is depicted pressing her knee in the back of the Duchess’s neck, and Meghan replies: ‘Because I couldn’t breathe anymore.’

It comes as Prince Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey aired this week, with claims they experienced racism within the royal family.

People on social media and activists have branded the cartoon ‘wrong’ and ‘appalling’.

CEO of race equality think tank Runnymede Dr Halima Begum tweeted: ‘Charlie Hebdo, this is wrong on every level. The Queen as  George Floyd’s murderer crushing Meghan’s neck?

The latest cartoon draws parallels with the tragic death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last year

‘Meghan saying she’s unable to breathe? This doesn’t push boundaries, make anyone laugh or challenge racism.

‘It demeans the issues & causes offence, across the board.’

In response, campaign group WindrushAnchor, said: ‘A poor and ill-conceived response from Charlie Hebdo which if anything inflames the issue.

‘This brand of simplistic satire has no place in the fight against racism. Utterly appalling and deeply saddening.’

Another Twitter user wrote: ‘Is this the free speech that Charlie Hebdo is so passionate about? Racism, disrespect and offence passed off as satire? I’m sorry but no Je suis for me.

‘This is nothing but racist bigotry and inciting hate. Do better with your platform and grow up.’

Others have accused the magazine of ‘pimping George Floyd’s trauma for profit’, The Mirror reports.

George Floyd’s death in May 2020 sparked outrage as video footage emerged of a police officer kneeling on his neck despite him saying he couldn’t breathe and members of the public pleading for him to stop.

Black Lives Matter protests took place across the world to speak out against police brutality and racial inequality after his death in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Activists and campaigners have taken to Twitter to share their disgust at the latest Charlie Hebdo cartoon, branding it ‘appalling’ and ‘wrong’

Just this week The Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously to pay an unprecedented $27million to settle a civil lawsuit from George Floyd’s family over his death in police custody.

The news of the settlement was announced as jury selection continued in the murder trial of Chauvin, who killed Floyd by kneeling on his neck for nine minutes last summer.’

And while some have simply expressed their outrage at the Charlie Hebdo cover, a human and civil rights activist @_SJPeace is calling for the magazine to be removed.

‘A French magazine is laughing about Floyd’s death…and Meghan Markle,’ he said.

‘This magazine is notorious for being racist and offensive and gaslighting people of color. This magazine needs to be removed!’

Chauvin is seen kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, for nearly nine minutes in Minneapolis on May 25. Shortly afterward, Floyd was pronounced dead at the scene

During the shocking Oprah interview Harry and Meghan claimed they had experienced open racism from family members and staff, and alleged a member of Harry’s family even expressed ‘concern’ about ‘how dark’ their unborn son would be.

There has been much speculation about which member of the royal family they were accusing of racism.

But during the interview the couple would not be drawn on who had deeply offended them.

They also said the family had been unsupportive of the pressures they were going through, leaving Meghan feeling suicidal and fuelling their decision to quit the UK.

Harry said he felt let down by his father, who, he claimed, refused to take his calls at one point, and admitted there was still a gulf between him and his brother.

Although they had not been expecting to receive an easy ride, the royal family were said to be stunned at the ferocity of the allegations hurled in their direction.

Prince William was the first senior royal to address directly the string of allegations made in the explosive Oprah interview, insisting they are ‘very much not a racist family’

There was significant internal debate as to whether to rebut many of them, but instead the Queen personally opted for a ‘compassionate but firm’ approach.

Days after the interview Prince William spoke to insist the royals were ‘very much not a racist family’, a move which was backed by the Queen and Prince Charles.

On Thursday he became the first senior Windsor to address directly the string of allegations made in the explosive Oprah interview.

This is not the first time the magazine has been criticised for its controversial cartoons.

In January 2015 the magazine was the target of terror attack, which saw 12 people killed and 11 injured.

Two armed and masked men, who identified themselves as belonging to the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda, entered the newsroom and shot several members of staff.

The attack came after the magazine published cartoons of the Islamic prophet Muhammad in 2012.

Meghan Markle’s father voices regret for staged photoshoot ahead of royal wedding: ‘I wish I hadn’t’

Thomas Markle reacted to his daughter Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey on Tuesday, and amid his defense of the British royal family, he voiced regret for the staged photos he took in Mexico that ultimately led to his estrangement from the Duchess of Sussex.

Speaking to ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” on Tuesday, Thomas Markle said he’s apologized for the photos that went viral of him just days ahead of Meghan and Harry’s 2018 royal wedding ceremony “at least 100 times or so.”

Still, the embattled father now claims he wishes he hadn’t participated in the staged photoshoot — one he admits he wasn’t truthful to his daughter about at the time.

“I wish I hadn’t done the whole thing but here’s the other side…It’s like no one took any time to protect any member of our family. We were attacked by the press every day – my oldest daughter, my son, myself, my grandchildren — all of us were attacked by the press. Nobody was there to care for us. No one looked after us,” the duchess’ father said to the outlet.

The 76-year-old father of Meghan also claimed he participated in the photoshoot because he believed it would make his reputation appear better after the press “were making me an alcoholic, they were calling me names, they were talking about how I dress.”

“So, yes, I went through this deal with this [photographer] who was going to make me look better. Maybe I got sucked into it but I believed him and I thought it was going to work. It didn’t work, of course. When it was exposed, I said, ‘What’s happening?'” Thomas continued. “Well, they waited three days before the marriage and released the photos. When that happened, I said, ‘How’d this happen? What do I do?’ He said, ‘Just deny it. It’ll go away in one day.’ It didn’t go away. It hasn’t gone away yet.”

In the same conversation, Thomas Markle explained his reasoning for talking to the press amid his estrangement from the duchess.

“Because they’re not talking to me. When they decide to talk to me, I’ll stop talking to the press,” Thomas said.

Thomas, speaking from Rosarito, Mexico, added that he “would love to hear” from the couple.

In terms of not being helped by the British royals amid persistence from the media, Thomas further claimed he was “left out to dry.”

“In spite of all that, I still apologize. I’m apologizing today again,” he said.

Thomas Markle went on to claim that he feels he’s been “pushed around and knocked down for one thing I did.” He calls the photoshoot his “one big mistake.”

“I apolgoized for it as many times I possibly can. However, I love my daughter very much. Had I known she was having psychological problems, I would have been there for her. Biggest problem here is she’s pretty much ghosted all of her family on her mother’s side and on my side. She really had no one to reach out to. She would have had us if she kept us,” he concluded.

Winfrey shared Monday on “CBS This Morning” that Meghan revealed to her that her father was hunted down by the British press and showered with gifts in exchange for comment and stories about the Duchess of Sussex.

When she asked Meghan if she felt betrayed by her father for speaking to the tabloids, especially right before her wedding to Prince Harry, Meghan responded: “If we’re going to use the word betrayal, it’s because when I asked him, when the comms team told us this the story was coming out, we called my dad and I asked him and he said, ‘No, absolutely not.'”

Meghan said she tried to reason with him, “I just need you to tell me, if you tell me the truth we can help. And he wasn’t able to do that… that for me has really resonated as a mother.”

“I look at Archie and I can’t imagine doing anything to hurt my child. I can’t reconcile that,” Meghan added.

“Everyone has accountability. Look [the tabloids] hunted my mom down. You’ve never heard her say a word. She’s remained in silent dignity for four years watching me go through this,” Meghan described.

Meghan’s estranged half-sister Samantha has also spoken out and pushed back against her sister’s claims that they didn’t know one another well, as well as Meghan’s claim that Samantha changed her last name to Markle after the former “Suits” star began dating Harry.

Samantha showed Inside Edition that a petition to change her name to Markle was dated 1997 and her college diploma, which also reads “Markle.”

Meghan Markle’s ‘Suits’ co-star Patrick J. Adams slams royal family amid bullying claims: ‘Archaic and toxic’

Meghan Markle’s former on-screen love interest, Patrick J. Adams, is voicing his support for the Duchess of Sussex.

Adams — who starred alongside Markle in the USA Network series “Suits” from 2011 to 2018 — took to Twitter on Friday defending Markle, 39, after allegations of bullying during her time as a working royal came to light. Markle’s team has strongly refuted the claims.

“Meghan Markle and I spent the better part of a decade working together on Suits,” Adams, 39, prefaced the post. “From day one she was an enthusiastic, kind, cooperative, giving, joyful and supportive member of our television family. She remained that person and colleague as fame, prestige and power accrued.”

“She has always been a powerful woman with a deep sense of morality and a fierce work ethic and has never been afraid to speak up, be heard and defend herself and those she holds dear,” the actor continued. “Like the rest of the world, I have watched her navigate the last few years in astonishment.”

The actor went on to describe how drastically Markle’s life had changed, stating the difficulties the former American actress had to endure acclimating to an “archaic” and “toxic” family dynamic.

“She fell in love, moved to a new country, became a household name across the entire globe and began the difficult work of trying to find her place in a family dynamic that can at best be described as complicated and at worst, seemingly archaic and toxic.”

Adams then lamented on his disdain for “racist, slanderous, clickbaiting” reporting that has followed Markle since her marriage to Prince Harry, 36.

“It sickened me to read the endless racist, slanderous, clickbaiting vitriol spewed in her direction from all manner of media across the UK and the world but I also knew that Meghan was stronger than people realized or understood and they would regret underestimating her,” he said.

MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY’S PALS THINK PALACE’S BULLYING PROBE IS ‘RETALIATION’ FOR OPRAH SIT-DOWN: REPORT

“And then they welcomed Archie,” Adams added of Markle and Harry’s son, who turns two in May. “And on any sort of decent planet that would be a time to stop sharpening the knives and let these two people enjoy the magical early months and years of starting a family. But we don’t live on that planet and instead the hunt continued.”

Adams then slammed the royal family.

MEGHAN MARKLE WAS ‘SPEECHLESS’ BY ‘TAKEDOWN’ OF HER CHARACTER BY PALACE AIDES IN UK REPORT, PALS SAY

“It’s OBSCENE that the Royal Family, who’s newest member is currently GROWING INSIDE OF HER, is promoting and amplifying accusations of “bullying” against a woman who herself was basically forced to flea [sic] the UK in order protect her family and her own mental health,” he stated.

He continued: “IMO, this newest chapter and it’s timing is just another stunning example of the shamelessness of a institution that has outlived its relevance, is way overdrawn on credibility and apparently bankrupt of decency.”

Adams concluded his post with a resounding statement: “Find someone else to admonish, berate and torment. My friend Meghan is way out of your league.”

Former “Suits” writer Jon Cowan also jumped to Markle’s defense on Twitter, lashing back at a social media user who characterized Markle as an “awful person” on Wednesday.

“It’s also possible the Duchess of Sussex is a good person thrust into an unimaginable world,” Cowan retorted. “Having spent 3 years working with her in her pre-Duchess days, I saw a warm, kind, caring person. I know nothing of her current situation but she gets the benefit of the doubt in my book.”

On Tuesday, the Times in the U.K. alleged that Markle faced a bullying complaint made by one of her close advisers.

Buckingham Palace released a statement in response to the report. “We are clearly very concerned about allegations in The Times following claims made by former staff of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” the statement read, as confirmed by Fox News on Wednesday.

“Accordingly our HR team will look into the circumstances outlined in the article,” the statement continued. Members of staff involved at the time, including those who have left the Household, will be invited to participate to see if lessons can be learned.”

“The Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma,” a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said in a statement sent to Fox News on Wednesday.

“She is determined to continue her work building compassion around the world and will keep striving to set an example for doing what is right and doing what is good,” the statement added.

According to The Times, the complaint was first made in October 2018, by Jason Knauf, the couple’s former communications secretary. The complaint alleged that the former American actress drove two personal assistants out of the household and undermined the confidence of a third staff member.

The outlet reported that Knauf submitted the complaint in an effort to protect palace staffers who alleged they were being bullied by Markle. Some claimed they were even reduced to tears.
