Arch Manning highlights 32 five-stars ahead of Signing Day 2022

The 247Sports recruiting and scouting team unveiled its updated 2023 rankings this week, complete with 32 five-star prospects for this recruiting cycle, led by New Orleans Isidore Newman quarterback and Texas Longhorns football commitment Arch Manning247Sports established itself as an industry leader in part because of its set number of 32 five-star prospects per cycle, a number that reflects the total first-round selections each NFL Draft.

These 32 five-stars, notes 247Sports national recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks, are not necessarily guaranteed five-star status at the end of the cycle in roughly eight weeks.

Players could rise and fall within the 32, potentially fall out of the 32, or possibly get passed up for current high-level prospects knocking on the five-star door. The final 32 five-star reveal lands in late January ahead of February’s traditional National Signing Day.

Peyton Manning brings back Carrie Underwood side-eye controversy at 2022 CMAs

Peyton Manning and Luke Bryan wouldn’t let Carrie Underwood forget about the infamous side eye she gave the “American Idol” judge at the CMA Awards.

During their opening monologue, Manning and Bryan, who hosted the CMAs on Wednesday, referenced the moment from last year’s show, when he joked about Aaron Rodgers’ coronavirus vaccine controversy. At the time, Underwood’s husband, former NHL star Mike Fisher, defended Rodgers on social media, and when the camera panned to the singer, she delivered a stoic side eye.

“Carrie Underwood and I have a lot in common,” Manning said to Bryan during Wednesday’s opening monologue. “We both work with Brad Paisley, we’ve both been on ‘Sunday Night Football’ a lot and we’re both very nervous about what Luke Bryan might say tonight.”

The joke drew laughs from the star-studded crowd, and Bryan replied, “Hell, even I’m nervous about what Luke Bryan might say tonight.”

Not much was off limits for the NFL legend and country music star in their opening monologue.

“Whatever makes you country, you are welcome here tonight,” Bryan said during the 2021 CMAs. “Rest assured, we’re following all the health protocols to keep everyone safe, and it is so great to be here with all my fellow artists — tested and together. Or immunized? Who is it? Just playing.”

The camera then showed Underwood, who didn’t appear amused by the joke, and just gave a stern look.

Bryan’s joke was about Rodgers and his controversial stance on vaccines, which dominated headlines last November when the Packers quarterback tested positive for COVID-19. He then entered the NFL protocol for unvaccinated players.

Rodgers intentionally misled reporters in August when he told them he was “immunized” against coronavirus. Rodgers, at the time, said he had been following an “immunization protocol” instead of getting vaccinated.

At the time, Fisher made headlines when he took to social media to support Rodgers.

“I stand with @aaronrodgers12 I believe in the freedom to choose what we put in our bodies and the freedom of conscience,” the hockey player wrote in a lengthy Instagram statement. “I agree with him in that the science clearly shows the vaccinated spread covid at basically the same rate as the unvaccinated.

“The @nhl @nfl and other leagues are ignoring the science and choosing to coerce and punish unvaccinated players with these restrictions. If they really cared about people’s health they would have daily testing for all.”

Arch Manning Rallies Isidore Newman to 54-52 Comeback Win

Arch Manning has little need to prove himself to anyone as one of the most highly touted high school quarterbacks in recent memory, but his latest feat of greatness will only add to his fast-growing résumé.

After trailing Benton (La.) High by 18 points in the first half, the senior Texas commit led his Isidore Newman squad to a furious comeback victory on Friday night in New Orleans. The Greenies scored 33 points in the third quarter to erase the deficit and ultimately win the high-scoring affair, 54–52.

Manning got off to tepid start and was held without a passing touchdown in the first half. But once he got rolling, he couldn’t be stopped. He ended the night 22-of-38 passing for 317 yards and four touchdowns.

Among the highlights of Manning’s second half was a sensational throw on fourth-and-13, when the young quarterback rolled out to his right and delivered a strike for a touchdown to take the lead.

Manning also added a dazzling touchdown run and a key reception on a trick play that led to another score amid the comeback.

Manning’s performance built upon his strong start to the year, as he accounted for eight total touchdowns in his previous two games. The senior signal-caller, who was ranked No. 10 in SI All-American’s preseason SI99 rankings, already had racked up more than 7,000 total yards and 100 total touchdowns prior in his first three high school seasons.

With Friday’s win, Isidore Newman improved to 3–0 to start the campaign.

Texas Spent Nearly $280K on Arch Manning, More Prospects’ Recruiting Weekend | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

Chris Graythen/Getty Images

Texas may not be able to pay Arch Manning to play for the Longhorns, but the university reportedly opened up the vault for the top recruit to make him feel like the king of Austin.

Sam Khan Jr. of The Athletic reported Texas spent nearly $280,000 during Manning’s two-day official visit in June. The visit included eight other prospects, but there was no question the school was rolling out a Benjamin Franklin-printed carpet for Manning.

The lavish weekend included a stay at a luxury hotel, two dinners averaging over $30,000 and a pair of open-bar parent socials that totaled five figures.

While it’s standard for recruits to visit the campus and receive elevator pitches from coaches, this was a first-class wine-and-dine experience designed to impress parents just as much as the players.

The weekend was, from a recruiting standpoint, an unmitigated success. Manning announced his commitment to Texas days after the visit, and he’ll be joined by 3-star high school teammate Will Randle, who was also on the trip.

The exorbitant tab for the weekend may open eyes across the country, but it’s merely the cost of doing high-level business in college football.

Manning will arrive at Texas as one of the most touted prospects in program history, equipped with every tool necessary to be a star and the pedigree of his last name as the nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning. We’ll have to wait until next year to see whether he lives up to the massive investment.

QB Arch Manning, No. 1 recruit in 2023 class, commits to Texas

The recruitment of blue-chip quarterback Arch Manning, a rare collision of talent, pedigree and possibility, captivated college football for years.

Manning ended the intrigue Thursday afternoon, committing to Texas over suitors that included Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Clemson and Virginia.

While Manning has long been considered the top player in the Class of 2023, the family remained intent about attempting to keep his recruitment as low-key as possible. His Instagram is private, and he has not been an active participant in name, image and likeness opportunities. But that has still been difficult, considering the family’s pedigree and the magnitude of how much his decision could sway a program’s fortune.

Manning even used his first tweet to make the announcement, on a verified Twitter account with a bio that simply says “high school student.”

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian also reacted to Manning’s announcement, first retweeting his new quarterback recruit then writing “All Gas, No Brakes!!!” in a follow-up post.

Manning is a nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning, a grandson of Archie Manning and son of former Ole Miss wide receiver Cooper Manning. He is the star quarterback at Isidore Newman High School in New Orleans — throwing for 5,731 yards and 72 touchdowns in his first three years of high school football — and has been considered a top-flight prospect since middle school.

Any morsel of news around the quarterback has rippled significantly throughout the recruiting universe. The commitment of Manning’s high school teammate and close friend, three-star tight end Will Randle, drew interest as it represented a bellwether for where Manning could be leaning.

“He made this decision on his own. This was his decision to make,” said Nelson Stewart, Manning’s high school coach. “I’m just happy he’s where he needs to be. He’s an 18-year old kid. There was a lot on his shoulders. Took his time and showed a lot of maturity.

“When it comes to that family, the choice was his.”

Stewart said that, from the start, the family stressed Arch Manning having an “old-school, 1970s type recruitment.”

“It unfolded naturally. I’m just so proud of him,” Stewart said. “Hope he can rest and enjoy his senior year with his friends and take that next step. There’s a huge ceiling in front of him.”

His commitment to Texas represents both Arch Manning carving his own path and perhaps reuniting with the family’s SEC roots. The Manning family has strong ties at Ole Miss and Tennessee, and Arch Manning could end up as a link to the SEC, as he could be Texas’ starting quarterback in 2025, when the Longhorns are slated to debut in the conference.

The commitment represents Texas’ first No. 1 overall recruit in the ESPN 300 era (since 2006) and its first quarterback ranked in the top 20 since Garrett Gilbert in 2009. It also gives Texas a key building block for its 2023 recruiting class, with skill players expected to be attracted to playing with a talent such as Manning.

The decision marks a massive win for Sarkisian, especially coming off a 5-7 debut season that included a home loss to Kansas. Manning’s decision reaffirms Sarkisian as one of the country’s top quarterback tutors and Texas as a quarterback destination. Sarkisian is the Longhorns’ playcaller and has coached such quarterbacks as Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones and Matt Leinart.

Sarkisian has also had two stints as an NFL coach, with the Raiders and Falcons. Preparing Arch Manning for the NFL has been a primary motivator as the Mannings have navigated the recruiting process.

The Manning family also built a strong relationship with Texas quarterback coach A.J. Milwee, which played a big role in the comfort level of sending him to Austin.

Stewart credited the amount of time and effort that Sarkisian and Milwee put into recruiting Manning. Stewart joked that he spoke to Milwee “more than my wife the last two years” and that the quarterback coach was around Isidore Newman enough that he would be flipping the light on in the weight room at 7 a.m.

Stewart added: “Sark, besides being a genius in pass game and second-to-none in football acumen and offensive ideology, he’s a good person. He and A.J. Milwee formed their own relationships. They really took the time to really recruit hm. I was able to see it firsthand.”

Manning’s decision gives Texas one of the country’s most robust and competitive quarterback rooms. The Longhorns have Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers, who was widely considered the top quarterback in the Class of 2021. They also have talented quarterbacks in Maalik Murphy, an ESPN 300 recruit in the Class of 2022, and Hudson Card, who was ESPN’s No. 2 quarterback recruit in the Class of 2020.

How good is Manning? One coach who recruited him told ESPN that he would likely still be the No. 1 player in his class if his last name was something other than Manning.

“He does have a big arm,” the coach said. “He’s a lot more mobile than everyone thinks. He’s not like a Manning who can’t move. He can get out of trouble. He’s not a statue in pocket. He played basketball and can dunk.

“He’s a prototypical kid that sees the field well. He’s not going to make bad decisions and not make bad plays worse and will truly run the offense.”

Manning has developed a reputation as a gym rat who loves football. The biggest knock on him is the competition level in high school, as there will be a steep adjustment in college. But the coaches who recruited Manning were blown away by his work ethic, as he has embraced the details.

“What I’ve been impressed with is him living with the pressure,” the coach said. “He’s got to live with that pressure and deal with all that. That may be a good transition for him. He’s been doing it his entire high school career. No stage is going to be too big.”

And for Texas, the commitment gives the Longhorns a marquee player to build around for their journey to the SEC. Texas got blown out 40-21 at Arkansas last year — a barometer for just how far the program needs to go to compete with the middle of the pack in the conference.

Peyton Manning partners with Georgia Tech for Demaryius Thomas scholarship

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning has created a scholarship fund at Georgia Tech to honor his friend and former teammate Demaryius Thomas.

Thomas, a former Georgia Tech wide receiver and Georgia native, died Dec. 9 at age 33.

The Demaryius Thomas Scholarship Endowment, created through Manning’s PeyBack Foundation, will award academic scholarships to incoming freshmen from Laurens County, Georgia, where Thomas was born and raised, or surrounding communities who demonstrate significant financial need and academic achievement. Full or partial scholarships will be awarded annually, and students will receive the scholarships until they graduate from Georgia Tech.

“Demaryius Thomas was an incredibly talented and unselfish teammate, but more importantly, he was a special person and friend,” Manning said Wednesday in a statement. “My family and I miss him dearly, and we wanted to honor D.T.’s memory by partnering the PeyBack Foundation with Georgia Tech to establish the Demaryius A. Thomas Scholarship Endowment.

“An important part of Demaryius’ legacy was the way he inspired the next generation to pursue their dreams with the same perseverance and determination that defined him. Through this scholarship to Georgia Tech, Demaryius will have a lasting impact on deserving youth from his hometown area who can follow in his footsteps and accomplish great things in life.”

Georgia Tech also announced that Aug. 8 will be recognized as Demaryius Thomas Day each year; Thomas’ uniform number at the school was No. 8. The recipient of the scholarship will be recognized that day as well.

Yellow Jackets players will also wear a No. 8 decal on their helmets in the 2022 season.

“We are grateful to Peyton and Ashley Manning and the PeyBack Foundation for establishing the Demaryius Thomas Scholarship,” Georgia Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury said in a statement. “Thanks to their generous contribution, Demaryius’ legacy will be carried on through Georgia Tech students from Laurens County and surrounding areas for years to come and his memory will be celebrated each year during our 8/8 Day recognitions.”

Thomas was a first-round pick by the Denver Broncos in the 2010 NFL draft and spent nine seasons with the team, including all four of Manning’s seasons in Denver. He finished his career as the Broncos’ second-leading receiver (9,055 yards), behind only Rod Smith, and is third in franchise history in catches (655) behind Smith and Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe.

With the arrival of Manning to the Broncos in 2012, Thomas had at least 90 receptions and 1,300 yards in four consecutive seasons, joining Hall of Famers Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice as well as former Rams wide receiver Torry Holt as the only players to reach those totals over four consecutive seasons.

In the Broncos’ record-setting 2013 season, when Denver scored a single-season record 606 points and Manning set NFL records for passing yards (5,477) and touchdowns (55), Thomas finished with a career-best 14 touchdowns. The next season, Thomas finished with a career-best 1,619 receiving yards.

In all, Thomas set 16 Broncos franchise records, including his 1,619-yard season and his 33 career 100-yard games.

Playing 10 seasons overall with the Broncos, Houston Texans and New York Jets, Thomas finished his NFL career with 724 catches for 9,763 yards and 63 touchdowns.

At Georgia Tech, Thomas was a first-team All-ACC selection in 2009 and officially recorded 113 receptions for 2,135 yards and 13 touchdowns over three seasons.

The list of schools under consideration for Arch Manning grows

A recent report that 2023’s No. 1 recruit Arch Manning is down to two schools is not true, his father Cooper told 247Sports on Wednesday.

In fact, because of regime changes at a few SEC schools, you can add two more programs to the mix for the five-star quarterback: Florida and nearby LSU.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Manning still has a keen eye on Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss and Texas, schools he visited during the summer and returned for games during the fall. It’s a good bet that those four plus the twosome of LSU and Florida will get Manning on campus in the spring or summer.

Clemson is the only program Manning has visited that is no longer under consideration.

When college coaches were on the road in January recruiting, Alabama’s Nick Saban, Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Florida’s Billy Napier, LSU’s Brian Kelly and Ole Miss’s Lane Kiffin all came by the school to chat with New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman head coach Nelson Stewart about Manning and his teammates. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian used his allotted trip during the season for a game.

As a junior Manning threw for 1,947 yards and 26 touchdowns to four interceptions with another seven rushing scores. In his prep career he’s thrown for 6,307 yards as a three-year starter with 81 touchdowns passing and 19 rushing.

The Top247 regards Manning as the No. 1 prospect in the class of 2023.
