Rafael Nadal’s Australian Open title defense ends with injury-hit defeat against Mackenzie McDonald

CNN
 —

Rafael Nadal’s Australian Open title defense came to a premature end on Wednesday as he lost 4-6 4-6 5-7 against American Mackenzie McDonald in the second round.

The 36-year-old Nadal struggled with a left hip injury throughout the match and needed treatment during the second set on Rod Laver Arena.

He managed to finish the match, eventually going down to McDonald in two hours and 32 minutes for his earliest exit from a grand slam since the 2016 Australian Open.

“I didn’t want to retire [as] the defending champion here. I didn’t want to leave the court with a retirement,” Nadal told reporters.

“It’s better like this at the end. I lost, nothing to say, congratulate [my] opponent. That’s the sport at the same time – just try your best until the end.”

McDonald made a fast start to the match when he broke Nadal’s serve in the opening game.

He then did the same in the second set, taking control of the contest with consistent, powerful hitting from the baseline.

Nadal, who was looking to extend his men’s record of 22 grand slam titles at the Australian Open, left the court for a medical timeout at 5-3 in the second set.

The Spaniard was clearly struggling with his movement in the third set but nevertheless remained on serve until 5-5.

But then McDonald gained the upper hand, securing the crucial break with a backhand passing shot as both players came to the net.

He wrapped up the contest the next game when Nadal dropped a backhand return into the net to signal the biggest victory of the 27-year-old’s career.

McDonald, unseeded for the tournament, now has a chance to match his best-ever run at a grand slam if he manages to beat Dalibor Svrcina or Yoshihito Nishioka in the third round.

“He [Nadal] is an incredible champion,” McDonald said in his on-court interview. “He’s never going to give up, regardless of the situation, so even closing it out against a top guy like that is always tough.

“I was trying to stay so focused on what I was doing. He kind of got me out of the rhythm with that but I’m happy I kept focusing on myself in the end and got through.”

After the match, Nadal said he would receive treatment to ascertain the exact nature and extent of the injury.

“It’s difficult to make a resolution if it’s a muscle, if it’s the joint, if it’s the cartilage … Let’s see how the injury is, and then let’s see how I can manage to follow the calendar,” he told reporters.

MacKenzie Scott files for divorce from second husband Dan Jewett

MacKenzie Scott, a billionaire philanthropist who has donated vast sums of her wealth in recent years, has filed for divorce from her second husband, a science teacher whom she married in 2021.

The petition was filed in King County, Wash., on Monday, 18 months after Scott and Dan Jewett announced their marriage. The filing requests that the couple’s property be divided according to a separation contract, the details of which were not included in the petition. Jewett and his lawyer also signed the filing, which was first reported by the New York Times.

In 2019, Scott and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (who owns The Washington Post) ended their 25-year marriage, with Scott being awarded about 4 percent of Amazon, a cut worth roughly $36 billion at the time. Since then, Scott has been donating her fortune at an astonishing rate — an estimated $12 billion to more than 1,200 groups in three years, the Times reported in March.

Most recently, Scott donated $15 million to the Health Forward Foundation and $20 million to the Episcopal Health Foundation, the organizations announced Tuesday. Earlier this month, Scott donated two Beverly Hills homes worth a combined $55 million to the California Community Foundation, a Los Angeles-based charitable organization.

Jeff Bezos, in divorce settlement, retains 75 percent of the Amazon stock he held with Scott

Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index estimates Scott’s net worth at $28.9 billion, making her the 39th-richest person on that list.

Scott’s attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the divorce filing. Through a legal assistant, Jewett’s lawyer declined to comment.

The couple’s marriage was made public in March 2021, when Jewett — then a science teacher at Seattle’s Lakeside School, where Scott’s children have attended classes — posted a letter to Scott’s profile on the Giving Pledge. Philanthropists make pledges through the organization to donate most of their wealth during their lifetimes or after they die.

In the letter, Jewett wrote that he had been a teacher for most of his life and learned from “the generosity of those around me.”

“And now, in a stroke of happy coincidence, I am married to one of the most generous and kind people I know — and joining her in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial wealth to serve others,” he wrote.

That letter now is missing from the site, as is Jewett’s name. A photo of him and Scott posing together has also been replaced by a photo of only Scott. Scott’s Amazon author page, where her two novels are featured, no longer mentions “her husband, Dan,” as the Times reported. And Jewett’s name has been edited out of a June 2021 Medium post in which Scott discussed her donations, as the Times noted.

It’s unclear what, if anything, the divorce filing means for the Giving Pledge commitment. The organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment late Wednesday.

The divorce petition notes that Scott and Jewett were married in California, and they both live in King County, which includes Seattle.

Mike Clevinger, MacKenzie Gore stifle Phillies

PHILADELPHIA — Is this really the back end of the Padres’ starting rotation? Because if so, it’s time to put the rest of the league on notice: The bottom of the San Diego rotation looks an awful lot like the top of a few others. Perhaps better.

In their 3-0 victory over Philadelphia on Tuesday night, the Padres employed a piggyback in which right-hander Mike Clevinger took the ball first, followed by lefty MacKenzie Gore. There aren’t enough starts to go around anymore. So the Padres found a creative way to keep their electric rookie on the mound on regular rest.

That game plan worked to perfection. Clevinger was brilliant in his third start since his return from Tommy John surgery. He pitched five scoreless, one-hit innings, needing just 75 pitches to do so. It was, by some distance, the best Clevinger has looked since the 2020 surgery, Spring Training included.

Then came Gore, making his first professional relief appearance, Minor Leagues included. He worked three scoreless frames, striking out four on 40 pitches. On the strength of a two-hit night from newcomer Robinson Canó, the Padres got plenty of offense to improve to 3-1 on their road trip and 23-13 overall.

Much has been made lately about the depth of this starting rotation. What, exactly, are the Padres supposed to do with all these pitchers?

Maybe the answer is: Use them. If you have lots of good pitching, you don’t let it go to waste. And if a disproportionate number of those pitchers are starters, you find a place for them – particularly when the bullpen has proven somewhat leaky of late.

Right now, it just so happens that the Padres have seven healthy and capable starting pitchers. Gore’s move to the bullpen was prompted by Blake Snell’s forthcoming return from the injured list. When Snell finishes his debut outing on Wednesday, it’s entirely possible the Padres could piggyback Nick Martinez, another one of their starting pitching options, on top of him.

There will come a time when that level pitching depth comes in very handy. It was just last season, after all, that the Padres dealt with a slew of injuries and found themselves wholly devoid of rotation options come September.

For now, they’re more than content to flaunt their abundance of riches.
