What to Expect From the Next-Generation 14-Inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pro

Following a rumor that Apple has a product announcement planned for tomorrow, and the discovery of an unreleased MacBook Pro in a Canadian regulatory database, it appears that new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models might finally be imminent.

Ahead of the potential launch, we have recapped everything that we have heard so far about the next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

M2 Pro and M2 Max Chips

A key new feature of the next MacBook Pro models is expected to be M2 Pro and M2 Max chips for faster performance. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said those chips will offer only “marginal” performance improvements over the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips in the current models, as leaked benchmarks suggested last year.

Wi-Fi 6E

Wireless frequency ranges mentioned in the Canadian regulatory filing indicate that the new MacBook Pro will support Wi-Fi 6E, which extends Wi-Fi to the 6GHz band for more bandwidth, faster speeds, and lower latency. The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro support standard Wi-Fi 6, which is limited to 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Faster RAM

The new MacBook Pro models are rumored to be equipped with “very high-bandwidth, high-speed RAM,” but details are unclear. On a purely speculative basis, it is possible that the new models could be equipped with Samsung’s latest LPDDR5X RAM for up to 33% increased memory bandwidth with up to 20% less power consumption.

No Design Changes

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Gurman have both suggested that the new MacBook Pro models will have no external design changes and few other major features.

This aspect wouldn’t be too surprising, as Apple fully redesigned the high-end MacBook Pros in October 2021 with more ports like HDMI and MagSafe, a notch at the top of the display, an all-black keyboard area, and more. MacBooks often go multiple generations between major hardware changes, so a spec bump in 2023 is a reasonable expectation.

Apple’s Massive MacBook Pro Failure

Updated Jan 15th: article originally posted Jan 14th:

It’s not a great time to be buying a MacBook Pro. The normally reliable and relatable Apple has forced the professional macOS laptops into a state of flux, disrupting its own market. What has happened to Tim Cook’s flagship line-up?

Update: Sunday January 14th. Mark Gurman highlights one of the biggest issues with Apple’s upcoming MacBook Pro hardware. The addition of a touchscreen in upcoming models will mean Apple upturning more than a decade of trying to explain why the Mac platform has ignored the ubiquity and utility of touchscreens:

“…it made fun of companies like Microsoft Corp. for blending laptops and tablets, introduced duds like the Touch Bar, insisted that macOS wouldn’t offer a good touch experience and decried the approach as “ergonomically terrible.”:”

As Apple brings apps from its various operating systems closer together – notably iPadOS apps to macOS – that stubborn approach has to change, not least because using touch-based apps on any of the current macOS machines is uncomfortable at best and painful in many more cases.

But this isn’t the only issue that is hampering the delayed Macs.

Where are the next-generation MacBook Pro laptops? The community was eagerly expecting the M2 Pro- and M2 Max-powered laptops to arrive during the last quarter of 2022. Apple failed to launch any new Mac in the last quarter of the year, the first time it has not reached this milestone in over two decades.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro, as discussed previously, is little more than a MacBook Air with an entry-level processor supported by an active cooling fan to inch out a bit more performance. For many, myself included, this is not what you would expect from a professional-level MacBook Pro.

The non-arrival in 2022 is compounded by reports of even more delays in 2023 with the laptops not expected to be announced before the summer, no doubt with a further delay before they go on sale.

It’s unlikely there will be a significant increase in performance? The move away from Intel to Apple Silicon brought an immediate jump in power and potential, but the jump from Apple Silicon’s M1 to M2 chipsets has proved less spectacular on the MacBook Air refresh. The performance gains for the M2 Pro over the M1 Pro are reported as being “marginal”. There are suggestions that Apple will remain on the 5nm process for its silicon rather than moving to 3nm and capturing all the gains that the latter would offer.

Finally, Apple is looking to equip future MacBooks with a touchscreen, some fourteen years after Microsoft first supported this in mainstream Windows devices. This would be a sea-change in Apple’s approach to portable computing, but it is one that feels inevitable as Tim Cook and his team try to pull the Mac and iPad platforms closer together both in software and hardware. Those MacBooks would become the go-to laptops in the range, and while not fully Osbourne’ing the rest of the range, would reduce the impact of the vanilla-screened laptops.

Those who were expecting the new MacBook Pro laptops to arrive on a schedule that Apple allows the community to accept have been disappointed. Those looking to upgrade – be it to new hardware or to finally join the Apple Silicon platform will have to wait for the professionally focused laptops. And anyone who wants the utility and ease of use provided by a touchscreen will be wary of investing in any new Apple laptop before the long-established technology finally appears on the platform.

Apple’s launch of the M2 family during 2022’s Worldwide Developer Conference saw Tim Cook and his team build on the successful Apple Silicon launch. Since then, there have been delays, poor communication, and leaked features which could damage short-term sales.

The MacBook Pro platform is neither stable nor certain going into 2023.

Next-Generation MacBook Pro Models With M2 Pro and M2 Max Chips Reportedly ‘Delayed Once Again’

Apple’s next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips were slated to hit the market in “early 2023,” but the laptops are now expected to be “delayed once again,” according to Taiwanese publication DigiTimes.

The report does not offer a revised launch timeframe for the new MacBook Pros. In his newsletter last weekend, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said Apple planned to release the laptops in the first half of this year and said they will have the same designs and features as the current models, but with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. Gurman said those chips will offer only marginal performance improvements over the current M1 Pro and M1 Max.

In late October, Gurman said Apple planned to release the new MacBook Pros in the first quarter of 2023 and had tied the launches to an upcoming macOS 13.3 release, but it’s unclear if those plans have changed since then. Based on Gurman’s latest timeframe of the first half of 2023, the new MacBook Pros should finally be released by Apple’s annual developers conference WWDC in June at the latest, but hopefully sooner.

Apple’s chipmaking partner TSMC started mass production of 3nm chips in late December, but reports have conflicted as to whether the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips will be 3nm or remain 5nm like the M1 Pro and M1 Max.

The rest of the report is focused on how MacBook shipments will likely decline 40% to 50% sequentially in the first quarter of 2023, citing unnamed supply chain sources. The report claims that Apple “adjusting its shipment ratios” by adding Wingtech as a MacBook assembler is the primary reason for the substantial decline.

Banking malware Dridex attacking Mac, MacBook computers with sneaky infection method

If you use a Mac or MacBook, beware that a banking malware known as Dridex is moving on from attacking Windows computers and is now going after Macs using email attachments that look like regular documents.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, SECURITY ALERTS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

It is an information stealer malware attributed to the cybercriminal group Evil Corp that is used to harvest sensitive data from infected machines. Cybersecurity software company Trend Micro analyzed the malware and found that the file can run on both macOS and iOS systems.

Here’s what to know about the banking malware known as Dridex.

What is Dridex malware and what does it do?

Dridex malware has been around for many years, and cybersecurity firms have been targeting it since its conception. This malware’s goal is to target and obtain private information from people’s bank accounts. Dridex is classified as Trojan malware, a type of malware that disguises its malicious coding within seemingly harmless data to catch people off guard. Cyber hackers typically spread it via spam email, posing as official-looking emails.

SMALLER VS. LARGER TABLETS: IS BIGGER BETTER?

Dridex is now known to be hitting Mac and MacBook computers.

How does this macOS Dridex malware work?

This version of Dridex malware contains a malicious document that will run automatically as soon as a user opens it. Once it begins to run, it overrides all Microsoft Word files contained within the infected macOS computer and will contact a remote server to download more files. One of those files is a Windows executable file that runs on Dridex.

If you have a Mac, you may not be immediately aware that your files are corrupted, which is why Dridex is specifically targeting Word documents. Since people regularly share Word documents, folks with Mac can share their overridden, malicious files with others and unknowingly infect those devices, creating a malware domino effect.

ARE APPLE AIRPODS PRO AN ALTERNATIVE TO PRICEY HEARING AIDS?

In this case, the malware itself cannot infect targeted Macs since it is contained within an executable Windows file. However, if you were to download the corrupted file, it can cause files on a Mac to be overwritten with malicious ones. It has the potential when shared online to unwittingly infect your family, friends and coworkers with malware.

To protect your computer against Dridex, follow these steps.

Forget The New MacBook Pro, Apple Has Something Better

Updated Jan 8th: article originally posted Jan 7th:

With Apple deciding to break a streak of two decades of launches by not announcing a new Mac in the last quarter of the year, what’s next for the MacBook family? I’m sure the faithful will always wait for the latest releases, but everyone else looking for a new MacBook right now may be considering Apple’s current offering in general, and the newest MacBook Pro in particular.

Yet every other option available both right now and in the near future is a far better choice than Apple’s latest laptop.

Update: Thursday January 7th: Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman adds to the many voices of an update to the MacBook Air during 2023, reporting that a 15-inch display is the most likely candidate to be launched this year. But this comes with a disappointing note on another MacBook Air that many were hoping for.

Apple is no longer looking to release a 12-inch MacBook “in the near term”. This smaller model, reminiscent of the 12-inch MacBook that was available between 2015 and 2019, would have been a highly portable laptop paired up with the Apple Silicon technology to offer longer battery life with more power than the previous Intel-based 12-inch models offered.

Apple will no doubt steer those looking a smaller ‘laptop-like’ experience towards the existing 11-inch and 12-inch iPad Pro hardware.

Let’s remember that the current new MacBook Pro (released at WWDC in June 2022) is Apple’s awkward combination of an M2-powered MacBook Air with a MacGyvered fan for some extra cooling. That lets the processor run a little faster than the Air, but you are paying a lot for this slight increase over the Air. If you are in the MacBook game for power, you need a ‘professional’ MacBook Pro; those looking for Apple’s definition of value for money should stay with the MacBook Air.

What about those looking for raw power? The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops powered by the M1 Pro and M1 Max chipsets are more powerful but built on the previous generation of Apple Silicon. The eagerly awaited upgrade to the presumptively named M2 Pro and M2 Max that many expected to arrive in Q4 2022… did not appear. They’re on the cards for the first half of 2023.

Those looking for a larger laptop have lots of choices in the Windows market, but Apple has kept the larger-screened MacBook choices under the Pro designation. With Apple Silicon lifting the baseline of performance to levels more than suitable for most consumers (even if Tim Cook and his team missed their deadline), a larger screen on the MacBook Air would be one of the most anticipated upgrades. The supply chain suggests that Apple is preparing a 15-inch display for its consumer laptop – an option that would be a welcome diversion from Apple’s traditional portfolio.

It’s also worth asking if you actually need a laptop. Do you leave your desk and work on the move enough to justify the portability, or would a smartphone or tablet paired with an iMac or Mac Studio be a better choice?

You can look elsewhere in the current range, save up for a true powerhouse laptop, or wait for a larger display. Apple has many options now and in the near future… and they’re all better than the new MacBook Pro.

15-Inch MacBook Air Rumored for 2023, But New 12-Inch MacBook Now Unlikely

Apple plans to release a larger 15-inch MacBook Air in 2023, but a previously rumored 12-inch MacBook with Apple silicon is no longer expected to launch this year, according to the latest information shared by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

Gurman did not share any additional details about the 15-inch MacBook Air, but display analyst Ross Young previously claimed that Apple’s suppliers would begin production of 15.5-inch display panels for the new MacBook Air in the first quarter of 2023, leading him to assume that the notebook would be released as early as this spring.

Given that the MacBook Air was just redesigned in 2022, it’s likely that the 15-inch model would have a very similar or identical design as the latest 13-inch model, and it will likely be available with M2 and M2 Pro chip options.

As for the 12-inch MacBook, Gurman previously claimed that Apple was considering launching it at the end of 2023 or in early 2024, but today he said that the smaller notebook is no longer on the company’s near-term roadmap.

Apple has released both lower-end and higher-end 12-inch notebooks in the past. At the low end, Apple introduced an ultra-thin 12-inch MacBook that weighed just two pounds in 2015, but the notebook was discontinued in 2019. And at the higher end, Apple offered a 12-inch PowerBook G4 in the mid-2000s, prior to the original MacBook Pro.

The previous 12-inch MacBook was thermally constrained as a result of using Intel processors, but Apple silicon has superior performance per watt, allowing for Apple to reintroduce an ultra-thin, fanless MacBook if it ever decides to.

Gurman: New MacBook Pro Models to Launch in Early 2023, iMac With M3 Chip Possible Later in Year

Apple plans to release new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chip options “early next year,” according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. The laptops were originally expected to launch this year, but reportedly faced delays internally.

No major changes are expected for the next 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models beyond the upgraded chip options and possibly faster RAM.

The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips were released in October 2021 and featured an all-new design with a notch in the display and the return of an HDMI port, MagSafe, and an SD card reader. Macs often go several years between redesigns, so a mere spec bump in 2023 makes sense.

Gurman also said a new iMac with an M3 chip will “probably launch at the end of 2023 at the earliest,” without sharing any further details. The current iMac launched in April 2021 with the M1 chip and a slim, colorful design, and Gurman previously said Apple planned to skip releasing an iMac with the M2 chip. He added that Apple remains interested in a new iMac Pro with Apple silicon, but that it has faced delays internally.

Apple also continues to test new Mac mini models with M2 and M2 Pro chip options, according to Gurman, but he did not share a launch timeframe.

Apple deals live blog: the best early Black Friday deals on iPad, MacBook, AirPods and more

When I started this blog, I was fully prepared to be listing amazing deals of 2021 Apple products, but so far, most of the best offers have, unbelievably, been on the most recent 2022 iterations. And this deal from Very is no exception.

Over on Very, the all-new MacBook Air (M2, 2022) has a £124 off the retail price (£1,369), taking it down to £1,225 (opens in new tab). To get this amount off any of Apple’s super-powerful laptops would be a great deal, so to see it on the latest offering is pretty special. It’s hard to overstate the power of this unassuming looking machine – read exactly what it’s capable of (in short, a lot) in our in-depth MacBook Air (M2, 2022) review (opens in new tab)

Oooh, the Apple deals keep coming this morning. If you’re on the hunt for an iPad in the UK, Amazon has a great deal on Apple’s entry-level model. Usually from £369, the 2021 iPad (9th gen) is currently £309.98 on Amazon (opens in new tab) – that’s just under £60 off.

This isn’t the lowest we’ve seen this model (with WiFi and 64GB storage), it went down to £298 back in August, but it’s not far off. The 9th gen iPad was superseded by a new, more powerful 10th gen version last month, but the fact that Apple has kept this around shows just what a brilliant little machine it is for everyday use.

Hi everyone, Kerrie here again. It’s early morning in the UK, and I’ve been dreaming of Apple deals. Lo and behold, I’ve woken up to a deal on the all-new Apple Watch Series 8 – now £399 at Amazon (opens in new tab). Ok, so £20 off might not be the biggest discount, but anything on a product as new as this is not to be sniffed at. We saw some slightly better deals back in Oct (during Amazon’s Early Access sale), so we may well see some more next week. But that’s not guaranteed, so if you’re after Apple’s new smartwatch, this is a deal worth considering.

If you want a larger screen, I’ve dug out the best early Black Friday Apple deal on the MacBook Pro 16 too, and again it’s a record saving. Amazon has the MacBook Pro 16, 16GB RAM, 512 GB RAM for $2,499 $1,999 (opens in new tab). That’s $500 off – again a saving of 20%. I’ve just looked up the price history and can confirm that, like the deal on the 14 below, this is the lowest price yet for the base configuration of this MacBook since it was released last year.

Like I said, for most people’s needs a MacBook Air will do wonderfully offering more than sufficient performance, especially if you go for a 16GB configuration. But if you work in video editing or producing complex 3D visuals, then you might want the performance and efficiency of the M1 Pro or M1 Max-chipped MacBook Pros, which make smooth work of more graphically demanding work.

We’ve been seeing savings of around $400 on some of the heftier configurations for some time now – those with 1TB or more in storage. But there are some big early Black Friday Apple deals on more affordable configurations right now. Amazon has the 2021 MacBook Pro 14 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD for $1,999 $1,599 (opens in new tab). That’s the lowest price we’ve ever seen since the laptop’s release, and a saving of $400, or 20%.

I should point out that there are discounts about on the newer M2 2022 MacBook Air  in the UK too. The best price I’ve seen so far is at Very, which has the base 8GB configuration reduced from £1,249 to £1,109 – a saving of £140 (opens in new tab).

I’ve been scouring the web for MacBook deals again, trying to work out what the current best-value deal is on an Apple laptop. For most people’s needs, a MacBook Air will do brilliantly, and we mentioned earlier on that B&H Photo has Apple’s latest laptop, the M2 MacBook Air reduced by $130 to $1,269 (opens in new tab) for a 16GB RAM configuration. If you don’t need that much memory, Amazon has cheaper 8GB configurations from $1,199 $1,099 (opens in new tab)

But the cheapest MacBook we can buy right now – and I suspect through all of Black Friday – is the previous M1-chipped model. Amazon has the 2020 MacBook Air reduced by $200 from $999 to $799 in the US (opens in new tab) and reduced from £999 to £877.99 in the UK (opens in new tab).

Sticking with Apple Watch for the moment, if you’re not set on the latest model, then there are some decent early Black Friday Apple deals on the Apple Watch Series 7 right now on both sides of the Atlantic.

It’s Amazon again. In the US, you can get the Apple Watch Series 7 45mm GPS for $429 $369 (opens in new tab), though it seems discounts are only available on the 45mm in red. In the UK, Amazon has the 41mm Apple Watch 8 for £369 £319 (opens in new tab).

We were pretty surprised yesterday to find an early Apple Black Friday deal on the new Apple Watch Series 8. Amazon has the 41mm GPS Apple Watch Series 8 for $399 $349 (opens in new tab) and the 45mm GPS Apple Watch Series 8 for $429 $379 (opens in new tab), a saving of $50. Not bad at all considering that the Watch was only released two months ago today.

Well, now there’s good news for those in the UK too. Amazon UK has just dropped its price for the Apple Watch 8 by £20. That means you can get the Apple Watch Series 8 41mm GPS for £419 £399 (opens in new tab). The 45mm is £449 $429 (opens in new tab). Not so generous as the US deal, but still very welcome on such a new product.

These are the first discounts of any kind that we’ve seen on Apple’s latest smart watch, and they’re surprising both for coming so soon after its release and also so early, ahead of the official Black Friday week.

Hi, this is Joseph Foley, taking over from Kerrie for a while as we continue to track the best early Black Friday Apple deals.

Now then, the Pro Display XDR is one of the most expensive products in Apple’s current line up, so if you’re going to splash out a small fortune for a screen, you really want to make sure it’s when there’s a Black Friday deal on. And right now there is, if you’re quick. Amazon has the 32-inch Retina 6K Apple 32-inch Pro Display XDR for $5,999 $5,499 (opens in new tab)

Yes, that’s still outrageously expensive, but it’s a saving of $500 and the lowest price we’ve seen in well over a year – Amazon last had the display at this price for a few days back in September 2021. If you can splash this much for a beautiful screen, you’ll want to be quick though. There are only 16 left in stock right now. Just remember to make sure you have some cash left over if you want a stand as well – Apple famously sells the Pro Display’s Pro Stand separately VESA Mount Adapter are sold separately – for almost $1,000 (opens in new tab).

If you’ve now totally lost track on which AirPods iteration Apple is on, you’re not alone. After double (and triple) checking, I can confirm the most recent model is the AirPods Pro (2nd generation), which retail at £249 on the Apple store. However, if these are the wireless headphones you want, you can save a cheeky tenner over at Amazon UK, where they are now £239 (opens in new tab).

(opens in new tab)

Time for you guys in the UK now. Once again, this deal comes on an all-new 2022 Apple product – and this time it’s the turn of the iPad Pro. The 6th gen 12.9-inch iPad Pro is currently £1,319 at Very (opens in new tab), that’s £50 cheaper than if you were to buy this 256GB version directly from Apple.

It might seem like a lot upfront, but divide this by the amount of years this device will serve you and it offers excellent value – especially with an extra £50 off.

(opens in new tab)

Well, the surprise discounts just keep coming. This time it’s on the all-new MacBook Air (M2, 2022). Released in June this year, this powerhouse of a machine is a firm favourite here at CB, and right now you can get $130 off Apple’s latest super-thin laptop over at B&H Photo – now $1,269 (opens in new tab)

To buy this model, which features an 8-core chip and 8-core GPU and 16GB memory, directly from Apple would cost $1,399, so this deal will be hard to beat this Black Friday.

Hello Apple fans! Kerrie, CB editor here. I wasn’t expecting to start talking about amazing Apple deals for another week, but it seems like retailers across the globe simply can’t wait any longer – the Apple Black Friday deals are here. Hurrah!

I should say, these early deals we’re seeing are pretty impressive (and trust me when I say I’ve seen more than a few to know when they’re good), but the official Black Friday event starts next Friday (25 Nov), so it’s worth noting retailers may well hold back their very best offers until then.

But if, like them, you can’t wait to get involved, there’s some cracking discounts around already. One of the best I’ve seen so far is over at B&H, where you can get $50 off a brand new 2022 Apple iPad (10th gen) – now down to $399 (opens in new tab). In a vibrant blue and complete with 64GB storage, this is the cheapest you’ll find this model on the web right now.
