Hubble Space Telescope snaps stunning view of ethereal ‘Lost Galaxy’

The Hubble Space Telescope captured this sharp view of NGC 4535, nicknamed the “Lost Galaxy.”

There are a lot of gorgeous galaxies out there in the universe, but it’s hard to top a truly sublime spiral, the kind of galaxy that swirls sparkling curved arms across the dark of space. That’s what’s on show in a new Hubble Space Telescope portrait of galaxy NGC 4535.

NGC 4535 has an engaging nickname: the Lost Galaxy. It’s not actually lost in space, but the moniker comes from how it looks with gear that’s not as fancy as Hubble.

“Despite the incredible quality of this image, taken from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, NGC 4535 has a hazy, somewhat ghostly, appearance when viewed from a smaller telescope,” the European Space Agency said in a statement Friday.

According to ESA, amateur astronomer Leland S. Copeland viewed the galaxy in the 1950s and gave it the whimsical Lost Galaxy nickname in honor of its ethereal appearance.

NASA also shared the image this week. NASA and ESA jointly operate Hubble. The space telescope’s image shows a stunning amount of detail. The bright blue spots are where young, hot stars hang out. The lighter colors closer to the middle highlight older and cooler stars. 

The Lost Galaxy view is part of the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS, or PHANGS, survey, which includes a collection of data on star formation. The galaxy resides in the constellation Virgo at a distance of 50 million light-years from Earth, but Hubble makes it feel like it’s close to home.

‘Babylon 5’ & ‘Lost’ Actress Was 65 – Deadline

Actress Mira Furlan, who played Minbari Ambassador Delenn on the sci-fi drama series Babylon 5, passed away Jan. 20. She was 65.

Furlan’s death was announced by Furlan’s Twitter account and confirmed by Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski, who paid tribute to the accomplished actress.

“It is a night of great sadness, for our friend and comrade had gone down the road where we cannot reach her,” he wrote. “Mira was a good and kind woman, a stunningly talented performer and a friend to everyone in the cast and crew of Babylon 5, and we are all devastated by the news.

Born in the Croatian capital Zagreb in 1955, Furlan was a well known, award-winning theater, film and TV actress in the former Yugoslavia. She starred in numerous plays, TV series and films, including Emir Kusturica’s Palm d’Or-winning and Oscar-nominated 1985 film When Father Was Away On Business.

Furlan emigrated to the U.S. with her husband in November 1991, during the early stages of the Croatian War of Independence, one of several conflicts that led to the breakup of the Yugoslavian federation. According to Straczynski, Furlan had been receiving death threats over her continuing travel across the disintegrating country with a theater troupe. 

Upon her arrival in the U.S., Furlan quickly landed the role of Ambassador Delenn in Babylon 5, which ran for five seasons.

Following the end of the Yugoslav Wars in 2001, Furlan started traveling back and forth between Hollywood and Croatia, acting in film and TV projects in both countries. In the U.S., she played Danielle Rousseau on ABC’s Lost. Her series credits also include Just Add Magic and Spider-Man: The Animated Series.

No cause of death was revealed by Straczynski wrote, “We’ve known for some time now that Mira’s health was failing… and have been all dreading this day.”

Furlan’s Twitter account shared what appear to be recent thoughts by her about life coming to an end. Fittingly, while looking at the stars “where I’ll be going soon,” Furlan evoked her famous Babylon 5 character. “‘We’re all star stuff’, I suddenly remember Delenn’s line from Joe’s script,” she said.

Furlan is survived by her husband, Goran Gajic, and their son.

COVID-19 Statistics | Jan. 21, 2021 | Lost Coast Outpost

A total of 2,458 Humboldt County residents have tested positive for COVID-19, after 31 new cases were reported today. 

Humboldt County Public Health and local providers have resumed using Lot 041L20A of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine after the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced it was safe to administer. 

CDPH had asked counties to pause use of the lot when seven vaccine recipients at a single location in San Diego experienced severe allergic reactions. The agency, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and Moderna, found that there was “no scientific basis to continue the pause.” 

Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman said he was grateful to the state for acting quickly to ensure the safety of the vaccine supply and added that he is excited to resume distribution of all vaccine on hand. “There’s a system in place to detect any issues with the vaccine, and that system worked,” he said. “Public Health has 3,170 doses on hand to administer. More than 2,500 of those were affected by this pause—600 first doses and 1,900 second doses—and we want people to know they’re safe.” The remainder of the Moderna lot was distributed to local health care providers, and all are clear to resume administering those doses. 

“Given the severity of this pandemic, any delay in vaccination is significant, so we are pleased to resume our plans to vaccinate older adults,” Dr. Hoffman said. 

On Wednesday, 285 people were vaccinated at Public Health vaccination clinics with an estimated 290 additional vaccinations expected to be administered today and about 400 appointments scheduled for Friday. Local health care providers also continue to provide vaccinations to their patients. Appointments are invitation only and currently prioritized for Phase 1A health care workers who have not received their first dose and residents over the age of 75. 

Providers approved to administer vaccine will reach out directly to their patients who are over 75 as vaccine becomes available. For those who do not have a provider or whose doctor is not an approved vaccinator, the Humboldt County Joint Information Center is developing an online interest form for individuals to submit to be notified when vaccination appointments are available for their priority group. Additional information about the interest form will be released next week.
