Michael J. Fox is supported by his family and co-star Christopher Lloyd at Governors Awards in LA

Michael J. Fox was supported by his family along with Back To The Future co-star, Christopher Lloyd, as he gratefully accepted a high honor at the 13th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday in Los Angeles.

The now retired actor, 61, received the honorary Oscar known as the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award which is given to an individual, ‘whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.’

The Back To The Future alum was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1991, and created the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help fund further research for the disorder in 2000.

Support: Michael J. Fox, 61, was accompanied by his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their four children at the 13th Annual Governors Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday

The Spin City star kept his look classic and sophisticated for the special night as an honoree.

He donned a black suit which he paired with a white dress shirt and black tie. The actor slipped into a pair of black sneakers to complete his overall ensemble.

The Emmy award-winner posed for an assortment of snaps next to his stunning wife, who was elegantly chic for the evening. The happy couple, who tied the knot in 1988, first met on set of the popular sitcom series, Family Ties.

Tracy opted for a form-fitting, long-sleeved black sequin gown that fell down towards the ground.

The actress accessorized her look with dangly, silver earrings along with thin, rhinestone necklace. Her hair was parted in the middle and swept up into a stylish up do, allowing curled locks to border the sides of her face.

Happy couple: The talented actor met his wife on set of the hit sitcom, Family Ties, and the two tied the knot in 1988

Family photo: The talented actor was also joined by his four children so they could be by their father’s side during the special evening

In an interview published by People last month in October, Michael expressed that, ‘My best life now is I enjoy my family so much.’

He further added that, ‘Tracy and the kids are amazing. I know that sounds boring, it sounds like a fairy tale, but we’ve been married thirtysomething years, so we’ve got something figured out.’

Also in attendance at the ceremony to be by their father’s side included his four children whom he shares with Tracy: Sam, 33, twins Aquinnah and Schulyer, both 27, and Esme, 21.

During the ceremony, Woody Harrelson presented the award to Michael, and they shared a brief embrace on the stage. The two stars are not only good friends, but have also worked together in the past on the film, Doc Hollywood (1991).

Past work: he two stars are not only good friends, but have also worked together in the past on the film, Doc Hollywood (1991)

Saying a few words: The actor was pictured giving a moving speech after accepting the honorary award on stage

Retired: Michael made the decision to retire from his acting career due to his health condition, but expressed his gratitude to receive the honorary Oscar earlier Saturday evening

Although Michael has never been nominated for an Oscar, and has additionally retired from acting in 2020 due to his condition, his humanitarian work has not gone unnoticed from those in the motion picture industry.

According to Deadline, Academy President David Rubin stated, ‘Michael J. Fox’s tireless advocacy of research on Parkinson’s disease alongside his boundless optimism exemplifies the impact of one person in changing the future for millions.’

The star was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1991, at the age of 29-years-old. He didn’t go public with the news of his diagnosis until later in 1998.

The disorder affects the central nervous system, with some common symptoms like tremors, impaired movement and speech changes, progressively worsening over time, according to Mayo Clinic.

In 2000, the star launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help fund more research into treatments and potential cures for the disorder. Currently, the organization has raised around $1.5 billion.

When recently talking to Entertainment Tonight about receiving the honorary Oscar for his humanitarian efforts, Tracy stated the honor was ‘exciting’ while Michael jokingly added, ‘celebrating me is overrated.’

Other support: Michael’s Back To The Future co-star, Christopher Lloyd, was also in attendance to cheer on his pal as he accepted the award; Christopher seen at the ceremony with his wife, Lisa

Recent collaboration: The two actors recently worked together to launch a special Back To The Future line

Christopher Lloyd, who notably starred alongside Michael in the beloved Back To The Future franchise, was also in attendance at the ceremony.

He had the chance to cheer on his former co-star and witness the retired actor accepting the special honorary Oscar on Saturday evening.

The two stars, who have remained close over the years, recently collaborated to launch a special Back To The Future merchandise line.

‘Great Scott!’ he had written on a recent Twitter post to announce the big news. ‘Our first ever Back To the Future merchandise store that @RealMikeFox and I designed is finally here!’

A photo of the Michael and Christopher was added to the tweet, with the two wearing matching shirts from the line.

Still close: After many years, both Michael and Christopher have still remained close friends; the two seen at New York Comic Con in October

Humanitarian work: In 2000, the star launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help fund more research into treatments and potential cures for the disorder; the actor and his wife seen in NYC in October

In an emotional interview with People in October, the Back To The Future star said his condition ‘got worse’ and he became uncharacteristically ‘short with people’ after he broke his cheek, hand, shoulder and arm and his mother Phyllis died aged 92 over the past year.

The actor had previously cited 2018 as one of his worst years, when he had spinal cord surgery to remove a tumor, after which he broke his left arm.

He said: ‘I broke my cheek, then my hand, then my shoulder, had a replacement shoulder put in and broke my [right] arm, then I broke my elbow. I’m 61 years old, and I’m feeling it a little bit more.’

‘I was never really a cranky guy, but I got very cranky and short with people. I try to nip it in the bud,’ the talented star added.

‘I always think of these aides who work with me. And I often say to them, ‘Whatever I say, just imagine I said ‘please’ at the beginning and ‘thank you’ at the end. Just take a second and absorb that I might have said that if I was more myself, but I didn’t, so I apologize.’

Andrew Lloyd Webber Calls West End’s ‘Cinderella’ a ‘Costly Mistake’

The West End’s production of “Cinderella” took its final bow in London Sunday evening, although a key member of the production’s creative team was not in attendance at the Gillian Lynne Theatre. Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, who composed the music for the new adaptation of the classic fairy tale, did not appear at the venue in the flesh.

Instead, the musical theater titan penned a letter that was read aloud by the production’s director, Laurence Connor, thanking the members of the production before calling the endeavor a “costly mistake” — a comment that was met by resounding boos.

“I am hugely sorry not to be able to be with you today, but I want to thank everyone from our fabulous cast, crew and musicians, the superb creative team, Laurence,” Connor read aloud, pausing to indicate that Webber was thanking him, before listing off other key contributors. “I keep thinking if only we had opened three months later, we wouldn’t have had to postpone our opening twice because of COVID… I promise you we would have been here for a very long time to come.”

“My huge thanks to everyone. We kept the government’s feet to the flames and led the charge to the West End opening again,” Webber’s statement continued. “It might have been a costly mistake, but I am proud of what we did and will forever be grateful to everyone who supported me.”

The recitation of “costly mistake” spawned murmurs among the audience and looks of visible confusion from the production’s ensemble as they stood on stage.

“‘Cinderella’ got some of the best reviews of my career and I am immensely proud of it and it’s hugely due to you all. All my love, Andrew,” Webber’s statement concluded. After a brief pause, a score of jeers engulfed the auditorium. Notably, Webber’s name had already been booed earlier in the curtain call, following Connor’s announcement that the composer had sent a letter in lieu of his attendance.

“Cinderella” has had a rocky road over the past few months. The production, with lyrics by David Zippel and a book by “Promising Young Woman” writer-director Emerald Fennell, finally opened in August 2021 after several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Cinderella” was forced to pause operations during the subsequent holiday season due to a surge of COVID-19 in London at the time.

“Cinderella” is only one of many troubled productions across the theater industry, which has continued to contend with limited attendance and unpredictable suspensions due to the pandemic. Cast and crew were informed of the show’s imminent closure in early May in an abrupt announcement that sparked demands for compensation from Equity, the trade union for performers and creative workers.

Representatives for Andrew Lloyd Webber and Emerald Fennell could not be immediately reached. Variety has also reached out to Equity for comment. The Society of London Theatres had no comment.

“What I feel about this production is that we’ve created something really special,” Connor told the audience during his own curtain call statement. “On this day, watching that final performance with everybody, that’s how I want us to go.”

Former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein Says Economy At Risk Of Recession – Deadline

As inflation and interest rates rise, there is a “very, very high risk” factor for an economic recession. That’s according to former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, who addressed the issue Sunday on CBS talk show Face The Nation.

Can it be avoided? “There’s a path. It’s a narrow path,” said Blankfein, who is retired from Goldman Sachs, but still holds the title of senior chairman.

“But I think the Fed has very powerful tools. It’s hard to finely tune them, and it’s hard to see the effects of them quickly enough to alter it, but I think they’re responding well. It’s definitely a risk.”

Blankfein’s remarks come on the heels of similar sentiments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, who said last week that the Fed’s strategy of raising interest rates will “include some pain.”

“We fully understand and appreciate how painful inflation is,” Powell said in an interview with the Marketplace national radio program.

Powell said the process of curbing inflation includes raising interest rates at least the next two Federal Reserve meetings.  “The process of getting inflation down to 2% will also include some pain,” he allowed. “But ultimately, the most painful thing would be if we were to fail to deal with it and inflation were to get entrenched in the economy at high levels, and we know what that’s like. And that’s just people losing the value of their paycheck.”

US defense secretary Lloyd Austin speaks with Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu for first time since Russia invaded Ukraine

The call lasted approximately an hour and was at the request of Austin, who used the first call between the two in 84 days to urge Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to implement an “immediate ceasefire,” according to a brief readout of the call. The two last spoke on February 18, a week before Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.

It ends an extended period in which Russia’s top military leaders repeatedly refused to speak with their American counterparts.

On March 24, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said that Austin and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley “have sought, and continue to seek” phone calls with Shoigu and the Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the top Russian general, but the Russians “have so far declined to engage.”

Following the call between Austin and Shoigu, Milley is also expected to reach out to his Russian counterpart to see if it’s possible to schedule a call, a defense official tells CNN, but there is no conversation currently on the schedule.

The two have not spoken since February 11, one week before the last call between Austin and Shoigu.

On March 1, the US and Russia established a deconfliction line because the two militaries are operating so close together. Some of Russia’s strikes in Ukraine were close to the border with Poland where US troops are operating. Similar to the deconfliction mechanism the US and Russia have over Syria, the idea is to avoid any miscalculation or misunderstanding that might lead to an unintentional and dangerous escalation.

But even as the Pentagon said the line was successfully tested once or twice daily, there was no communication until now at the highest levels of the US and Russian militaries.

“We have not stopped trying [to establish communications] since the last time they spoke, which is right before the invasion, so it’s been a consistent effort,” a senior defense official said in a briefing with reporters Friday.

But the official tempered expectations on the impact of the call, saying it wouldn’t solve any “acute issues” or result in “direct change” in Russia’s military actions or increasingly hostile rhetoric.

The call comes at a particularly fraught time between Russia and the West, with no clear off ramp for Russian President Vladimir Putin and the war deep into its third month.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said Friday that the country was entering a long phase of the war, defying early expectations that Kyiv would collapse quickly.

“In order to win it now, we must carefully plan resources, avoid mistakes, project our strength so that the enemy, in the end, cannot stand up to us, ” Reznikov said.

Despite losses that have forced Russia to retreat around the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and near the city of Kharkiv in the northeast, Moscow has shown no outward signs of backing off.

Vladimir Chizhov, Russia’s ambassador to the European Union, insisted that the Kremlin’s “special military operation” remains on track, even as he acknowledged that it is “not proceeding at the speed certain people wanted in Russia.”

Meanwhile, Finland and Sweden are drawing ever closer to joining NATO, and the US is poised to approve another $40 billion package in aid to Ukraine, including billions in new weapons and equipment.

Both are indications that the West does not see either this conflict or its strategic consequences dissipating quickly.

Finland’s ambassador to NATO, Klaus Korhonen, told CNN that the enormous groundswell of support in his country for joining the treaty alliance was a “very drastic change in our security environment.”

Russia warned that it would bolster its ground forces and air defenses near Scandinavia and more naval forces if Finland and Sweden join NATO, but the threat has done little to deter their moves toward the alliance, serving perhaps only to hasten their ascension.
