Is this the lip gloss from Kate and Meghan’s ‘awkward moment?’

Prince Harry didn’t gloss over a dramatic makeup moment in his explosive new memoir, “Spare.”

In the forthcoming bombshell-filled book, the Duke of Sussex recalls an “awkward moment” when Meghan Markle allegedly asked to borrow Kate Middleton’s lip gloss — a practice he dubbed an “American thing.”

Could the lip gloss in question be the same one Kate Middleton swiped on at Wimbledon in 2019?

“Kate, taken aback, went into her handbag and reluctantly pulled out a small tube,” he wrote. “Meg squeezed some onto her finger and applied it to her lips. Kate grimaced.”

Harry, 38, added that the alleged incident — which he said occurred prior to the Sussexes’ and the Waleses’ Royal Foundation Forum appearance in 2018 — was something the couples “should’ve been able to laugh about,” but the press “sensed” it was “something bigger.”

As for which lip product the women supposedly shared? Perhaps Middleton passed over a tube of one of her go-to pout-perfecting products, Clarins Natural Lip Perfector ($28).

After all, the product seems to be a purse must-have for Middleton, who was seen swiping on the Rose Shimmer shade of the lip gloss — which comes in a squeeze tube — at Wimbledon in 2019, marking a rare moment of caught-on-camera primping.

She’s far from the first royal to love Clarins cosmetics, however, as Queen Elizabeth is said to have commissioned the brand to create a shade of red lipstick to match her coronation robes.

While Markle also attended Wimbledon in 2019, perhaps she was sticking with her own lipstick go-tos that time around; after all, unlike royals, the former actress didn’t have to keep her lips sealed about her favorite products during her “Suits” days.

Her personal go-tos include Fresh Sugar Lip Balm ($25) and Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillow Talk ($34), the latter of which is also among Britney Spears’ favorites.

Markle’s style and beauty choices have certainly made headlines since she first entered the royal family, with polarizing sartorial selections including the ripped Mother Tripper Ankle Fray Jeans ($278) she sported during her first public outing with Prince Harry at the 2017 Invictus Games.

Harry also mentioned the much-discussed denim in “Spare,” claiming the pants were palace-approved.

My granddaughter was born with a cleft lip and palate. I fired the pediatrician who told me she would die.

  • Kim Maddox’s granddaughter, Ariel, was born with cleft lip and palate.
  • A pediatrician told Kim that Ariel would die because she had so much trouble eating.
  • This is Maddox’s story, as told to Kelly Burch.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Kim Maddox. It has been edited for length and clarity.

When my granddaughter Ariel was born, she came home to my house. My son and Ariel’s mother knew that caring for their new baby would be a massive challenge: Ariel had been diagnosed with cleft lip and palate by ultrasound.

From the beginning of Ariel’s life, I have been her primary caregiver. I learned how to feed her with special bottles that had an extended nipple and reached all the way to the back of her throat. Still, when she ate, formula would spill from her nose and mouth; we were lucky if half of what we fed Ariel made it into her tiny belly.

One day my husband called me, panicking. He was at the pediatrician with Ariel’s mom. The pediatrician told them that Ariel wasn’t gaining weight and that she was going to die. I left work and flew to the pediatrician, but when I got there the doctor told me to calm down. I saw red. I’d just been told my baby was dying, and they had the nerve to tell me to calm down? I told her she was fired, and I took Ariel to the emergency room.

I started driving 15 hours for better care

At the ER, doctors weighed Ariel and reassured me that she wasn’t dying. The doctor told me we were doing everything right, but that we just had to do it more often. Ariel’s feeds took about an hour and a half, and we had to feed her every two hours.

I was so relieved, but that experience with the pediatrician showed me I would need to be very active in Ariel’s care. Before that, I had tried to do research, but I hadn’t known where to start. Our new pediatrician told us to get in touch with Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Ohio. It was a 15-hour drive from our home in Georgia, but once you’ve heard somebody say your child is dying, it doesn’t matter how far you have to drive.

Ariel had her first surgery at Shriner’s when she was 3 months old to correct her lip cleft. Formula still came out of her nose when she ate, but it was a much smaller amount. When we walked through the door for a follow-up appointment, the doctor said Ariel was a perfect weight. After that, I knew she would be OK.

Now, Ariel is thriving

Since then, Ariel has had more surgeries. Today, she’s a typical 4-year-old who loves telling stories, playing ball, and swimming. When you look at her, you wouldn’t even know she had cleft lip and palate. She has the tiniest lisp when she’s tired or excited, but the doctors say she’ll grow out of it.

My heart breaks for other parents and caregivers who are where I was in those early days: knowing they need help, but not knowing where to turn. Now, Ariel and I have a personalized support team at Shriners. When I call, they put me right through to anyone I need to talk to, whether it’s a nutritionist or a therapist.

I tell other parents to remember why they’re advocating. Ariel empowered me. This is about my grandbaby, my angel. No one is going to tell me whether she lives or dies. If you give up on her, as that pediatrician did, you’re not worth having around. I’ll find someone who moves heaven and earth to make sure she’s alive and thriving.

US paying lip service to One China policy

BEIJING — There is an increasing wariness of U.S. claims to recognize Beijing as the sole legal government of China, a retired officer of the People’s Liberation Army told CNBC on Monday.

His comments came after U.S. President Joe Biden repeatedly indicated the U.S. would defend Taiwan militarily if the island is attacked, only to have the White House deny a shift in a decades-long “one China policy.”

“We believe he is actually paying lip service to this one China policy,” said Zhou Bo, now a senior fellow at Tsinghua University’s Center for International Strategy and Security Studies.

Zhou did not specify who “we” referred to in his response to a question on CNBC’s ”Street Signs Asia” about how Beijing viewed the back-and-forth over Biden’s comments.

Taiwan is a democratically self-ruled island that Beijing considers part of its territory. Beijing has maintained it seeks peaceful reunification with Taiwan.

During the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore over the weekend, China’s Defense Minister Wei Fenghe maintained that Beijing would achieve reunification and warned those pursuing Taiwan independence would “come to no good end.”

A day earlier, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin accused China of “provocative, destabilizing” military activity close to Taiwan.

For more than 40 years, the U.S. “one China policy” has recognized Beijing as the sole legal government of China. Meanwhile, the U.S. maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan, with a policy of making sure the island has the resources to defend itself.

Given recent media reports about U.S. assistance to Taiwan, Zhou said, “How could we have trust in the one China policy?”

Lip readers decipher what Harry, William said at Philip’s funeral

Prince William told his brother Prince Harry during their grandfather’s funeral that the service “was great” — to which his sibling replied that “it was as he wanted it,” according to lip readers who analyzed the interaction.

The estranged brothers were seen amiably chatting for several minutes during the televised funeral for 99-year-old Prince Philip on Saturday and then spent a couple of hours together behind closed doors with their father, Prince Charles.

“Yes, it was great, wasn’t it,” the 38-year-old Duke of Cambridge reportedly told his 36-year-old brother once they both removed their masks, lip readers told UK newspaper Daily Express.

Interpreters said William later told Harry: ““Absolutely beautiful service, ah, the music.”

William had personally asked not to walk side by side his younger brother, leading the two to be separated by their cousin Peter Philips, son of Princess Anne.

That was just one example of “a great deal of frostiness” Harry faced during his first time home in the UK following the damning allegations Harry and wife Meghan Markle made against his family during their TV tell-all, sources told the Mail on Sunday.

Queen Elizabeth II’s daughter, Anne, and youngest son, Prince Edward, 57, failed to even acknowledge Harry before or during Saturday’s service, as did Edward’s wife, Sophie, the UK paper also claimed.

“It’s often said funerals are a time for reconciliation and that’s a scene a lot of people wanted to see, not least the family itself,” said ITN’s Tom Bradby, the Express reported.

“They were talking. They were possibly overcome by emotion. They were talking – and that’s got to be a very good sign. Let’s hope that they sort their recent troubles out because the Queen needs them both,” commentator Eve Pollard said, according to the outlet.
