Tron 3 Back on the Grid With Jared Leto to Star – The Hollywood Reporter

After years of stops and stars, Tron 3 is moving forward at Disney. Jared Leto, who has championed the project since 2017, will star in the feature with frequent Disney collaborator Joachim Ronning in talks to direct. The film, titled Tron: Ares, has a script from Jesse Wigutow and will follow 2010’s Tron: Legacy.

Disney released the original Tron in 1982, with Jeff Bridges starring as video game designer Kevin Flynn, who was transported inside his own creation and teamed up with Tron, a security program played by Bruce Boxleitner. The film was not considered a box office success, earning $33 million (around $100 million today), but it was admired for its groundbreaking visual effects and remained in the public consciousness for years to come, eventually spawning the sequel, Tron: Legacy.

That second film, from Joseph Kosinski, starred Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, and earned $400 million, not enough to get a planned sequel with Kosinski and his stars off the ground. After years of development, Disney officially scrapped a Kosinski sequel in 2015, and since then there have been various attempts to crack Tron 3. Most recently, Lion filmmaker Garth Davis boarded in 2020, but that iteration did not move forward.

Ronning directed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and co-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with his Kon-Tiki co-director Espen Sandberg. He has completed filming on the Daisy Ridley feature Young Woman and the Sea. Ronning is repped by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Sloane, Offer.

Leto starred in the Spider-Man spinoff Morbius for Sony last year and on Apple TV+’s WeCrashed. The Oscar winner has Disney’s Haunted Mansion and Darren Aronofsky’s Adrift coming up. Leto is repped by WME and Yorn, Levine.

Ares; Joachim Rønning Helm Jared Leto Sci-Fi Sequel – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: A new installment of Tron is coming back online. The Dish hears that Disney is in early negotiations to set Joachim Rønning to direct Jared Leto in Tron: Ares. The film is crewing up, eyeing an August start date in Vancouver.

Deals aren’t complete yet, but this would mark the fourth collaboration between Disney and the Norwegian filmmaker who helmed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He has wrapped for the studio the Daisy Ridley-starrer Young Woman and the Sea, about the daring journey of Gertrude Ederle, a New York teen who became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Jeff Nathanson scripted it, and Jerry Bruckheimer produces with him.

Now it’s on to the Disney sci-fi franchise, which began with the 1982 film that starred Jeff Bridges and was set inside the computer program called the Grid, where a computer hacker is abducted and forced to participate in gladiatorial games. The first one wasn’t more than a cult favorite, though its special effects were seen as game-changing at the time. That following swelled around the film in years to come as it played on cable only helped grow its popularity, to the point where Disney decided to move forward with a sequel, Tron: Legacy, in 2010, with Bridges reprising his role and Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde joining the franchise. That film grossed $400 million globally, and Disney has been trying to figure out how to continue the franchise since.

The studio got close in 2017 with Leto. Now it will be in the hands of Rønning, who early on broke into Hollywood co-directing with Espen Sandberg Kon-Tiki, the 2013 film that was nominated for the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar and chronicled Thor Heyerdah’s epic 4,300-mile crossing of the Pacific Ocean on a balsawood raft in 1947. Young Woman and the Sea isn’t slotted yet, but it has been testing strongly.

The Tron: Ares script is by Jesse Wigutow and is considered the sequel to Tron: Legacy, which was directed by Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joe Kosinski.

Sean Bailey and Sam Dickerman are the execs.

The producers are Justin Springer (Tron: Legacy), Leto, Jeffrey Silver and Leto’s Paradox partner Emma Ludbrook.

Leto, who next will co-star in Disney’s Haunted Mansion, is repped by WME and attorney Barry Hirsch; Ronning is UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and attorney Warren Dern.

Jared Leto is now actively participating in Morbius 2 memes

Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez (Getty Images)

Oh, how droll! What an unexpected turn of events! Jared Leto, the eponymous “living vampyr” from Sony’s latest “We have the rights to make movies about Spider-Man that do not contain any spidered men” picture Morbius, has now put his personal stamp of approval on the internet’s beloved “It’s Morbin’ Time” meme!

That’s right, folks: The meme culture surrounding Morbius has now officially hit the “Wendy’s making its own ‘Sir this is a Wendy’s’ joke” inflection point, as Leto posted a video of himself yesterday evening with a fake script for Morbius 2 subtitled It’s Morbin’ Time. This arrives just as Sony makes a weird little push to put Morbius back in theaters this weekend, jumping from less than a hundred screens over Memorial Day Weekend back up to a number that’s been reported to be more than 1,000.

All of this, in turn, has apparently been propelled by the internet’s adoption of Morbius as the latest thing to get ironically hyper-fixated on, and which has followed the same curve that all internet obsessions tend to these days: Early amused irony begets a culture of people making Morbius jokes as a way to show connection with each other, which begets corporations noticing there’s money in them thar internets, which begets a video of Jared Leto demonstrating that he’s “in” on the joke. As per the norm, any actual connection to Morbius, the fairly dull superhero vampire movie, sloughed off the whole thing about three permutations back.

And that, of course, is sort of the whole point of meme culture, as far as we can tell: It reduces the entire concept of comedy down to a set of simple LEGO-esque building blocks that are so easy to use that… Well, we were going to say “that even Jared Leto can successfully employ them,” but that seems a little too mean, so we’ll just let that sentence trail off instead.

It’s now clear, in any case, that Sony is running some sort of bizarre experiment here with this whole “Bring Morbius back to theaters” project: Pick a fairly weak box office weekend—sliding in between the debuts of Top Gun: Maverick last week and the U.S. debut of Jurassic World: Dominion next week—and figure out exactly how many dollars 8 million “Morbin’ Time” memes actually translate into. We’d be lying if we said we didn’t have our fingers crossed for “None, please, for the love of god, no money for meme movies, Christ.” But we’ll have to see what the box office reports hold next week to know for sure.

Bruce Willis & Jared Leto get shamed

Nominations for the 42nd Annual Razzie Awards have been announced — and it’s not good news for Bruce Willis.

The action hero, 66, has been given his own special category at the upcoming awards show — which will name “the worst movies” of 2021 —after he starred in eight critically-panned flicks in the space of a single year.

The special category is titled “Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 movie” and includes every single film the actor appeared in over the past 12 months.

The aging star — who was once a box-office drawcard thanks to lead roles in “Die Hard” and “Pulp Fiction” — made seven direct-to-video movies last year, including “Out of Death,” which has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Willis also appeared in “Midnight In The Switchgrass,” which was released in cinemas but was similarly lambasted by critics.

“Excruciating musicals, thrill-free thriller rip-offs, a nearly 2-hour product placement flick, and more Bruce Willis than any starving viewer could stomach,” Razzies organizers said in a press release promoting the nominations on Monday. “In other words, 2021 did not fail the Razzies!”

Willis has not yet responded to the news — although he’s hardly the only star to be shamed with the nominations.

LeBron James’ acting career isn’t faring well, with the star nominated for Worst Actor for his role in “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”

Meanwhile, Jared Leto was nominated for Worst Supporting Actor for his role as Paolo in “House of Gucci.”

It’s embarrassing news for the star, who previously won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for “Dallas Buyers Club” However, he’s in good company, with fellow Oscar winners Ben Affleck and Mel Gibson also named and shamed in the same category.

Affleck was nominated for the box-office bomb “The Last Duel,” while Gibson got his nod for starring in the stinker “Dangerous.”

Elsewhere, Amy Adams was nominated for Worst Actress for her role in “The Woman In The Window,” as well as Worst Supporting Actress for her role in “Dear Evan Hansen.”

But the Razzies’ most reviled film of 2021 is “Diana the Musical” — a Netflix version of the Broadway stage play which closed after just 33 performances.

What a stinker! “Diana the Musical,” which first premiered on Netflix, has been nominated for nine Razzies.

Macaulay Culkin and Jared Leto join celebrity models at Gucci Love Parade show

Written by Megan C. Hills, CNN

Macaulay Culkin often shirks the spotlight, but he made a surprise appearance Tuesday as a runway model for Gucci.

Joined on the catwalk by stars-turned-models Jared Leto and Jodie Turner-Smith, the “Home Alone” actor looked at ease in a vibrant outfit as the label took over Hollywood Boulevard for its Gucci Love Parade show.

Striding over Hollywood’s famous terracotta stars with his hands tucked in his pockets, Culkin donned a pair of wide-legged camel pants, a Hawaiian shirt and glossy floral bomber jacket for the show. His outfit was accessorized with a pair of caramel sunglasses, a Gucci logo belt and studded clogs.

The eclectic show was dominated by bright ’70s prints, sharply tailored menswear and statement dresses covered in bold feathers and ruffles. Leto, who has a longstanding relationship with the Italian fashion house, wore a double-breasted gray blazer with no shirt, white lace-up pants, heeled boots and retro-inspired glasses.

Musician Phoebe Bridgers also made an appearance in a Jackie Kennedy-esque pillbox hat. Known for her black and white ensembles, the singer-songwriter wore a long dark silk jacket with white piping — accessorized with a matching collar. Wearing black lace gloves, she carried a small briefcase and walked down the runway in snake-print boots.

Turner-Smith’s outfit, meanwhile, was among the evening’s most eye-catching. Emerging like a bird of paradise, she wore a gigantic dress covered in orange and maroon feathers. A collar of shocking green feathers provided contrast alongside chunky turquoise glasses, and she held a golden mini clutch in black latex gloves as she strutted down the runway.

Singer St. Vincent, movie director Miranda July and the actors Zelda Adams and Kodi Smit-McPhee were among the other celebrities appearing on the runway. Stars in attendance included Serena Williams, Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Miley Cyrus and Gwyneth Paltrow, who wore an updated version of her famed red velvet Gucci suit.

Jared Leto looks utterly bizarre

Jared Leto
Photo: United Artists Releasing

It’s heavy competition, but few people on Earth seem to hate Jared Leto’s face more than Jared Leto. What else can we make of the Suicide Squad star’s ongoing efforts to utterly goof up his features, a pursuit of prosthetic face junk that has now extended to the just-released first-look poster for Ridley Scott’s new film House Of Gucci? Dude looks like he got bit by a radioactive Jeffrey Tambor.

Kudos to the marketing team on Scott’s movie, at least, who understandably decided to stick Leto’s picture right in the middle of the composite shot we’ve seen of all five leads, lest an unbalanced arrangement send the entire photo set sloughing off into the sea. Because while it’s not like Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jeremy Irons, and Al Pacino—as, respectively, Patrizia Reggiani, Maurizio Gucci, Rodolfo Gucci, and Aldo Gucci, respectively—don’t look plenty weird here, it’s just that none of them can match the spectacle of Leto’s Paolo Gucci, who looks like a high school senior who has started to apply old age make-up and somehow forgotten to ever stop. We half-expect him to mumble “I’ve got too much shit on me” and mutter about how he doesn’t want to be around any more.

Scott’s latest tells the story of the murder of Maurizio Gucci, who was killed (spoilers) by his ex-wife Patrizia in 1995. And, credit where it’s due: These posters have gone a long way to selling the lurid, weird tone that Scott is hopefully aiming for in this tale of intra-family fashion warfare. (Given that the director is working from a screenplay adapted from a book whose subtitle is “A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed,” we’re guessing we’re in for neither a stolid nor a sober ride.) House Of Gucci is out on November 24, 2021; meanwhile, its inevitable trailer has just immediately jumped to the top of our “Gotta get a load of this” list whenever it eventually arrives.

Update, 7:54 p.m.: Well, speak of the puffy-faced devil: Said trailer has now arrived, slamming into our senses with a lick of Blondie and a lot of fancy jackets. As one might have predicted, Leto’s face is just as distracting in motion as it is in still images. But Gaga and Driver both look genuinely mesmerizing—and not in a “dear god, why” sort of way—suggesting that Scott’s film might be just flashy enough to make all these big make-up shenanigans work.

‘House of Gucci’ star Jared Leto looks unrecognizable in first poster for movie: ‘What a transformation’

Jared Leto has completely transformed for his part in the upcoming movie “House of Gucci.”

The Oscar-winning actor/musician, 49, plays Paolo Gucci, the former vice president and managing director of Gucci, in the film directed by Ridley Scott.

Leto shocked fans with his look for the film. He donned prosthetics for the role in a poster released by the film on Thursday.

Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway will help Apple re-create the WeWork disaster for TV

Apple’s television adaptation of the podcast adaptation of the real-life soap opera that was WeWork now has some major talent attached. Jared Leto, the soon-to-be leading vampire of Morbius, and Anne Hathaway, are joining the Apple TV Plus series WeCrashed as Adam and Rebekah Neumann, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

WeCrashed takes its name from the Wondery podcast it’s based on, detailing the meteoric rise and fall of the real estate company that billed itself as a technology company. Many of WeWork’s problems (and, presumably, the plot of the show) were centered on the Neumanns. Adam Neumann was described as a risk factor in the S-1 documents released before the company’s IPO, and a profile of the Neumanns in The Wall Street Journal didn’t do much to dissuade anyone that they weren’t completely out of touch. For example, Rebekah Neumann reportedly fired multiple people because she “didn’t like their energy,” and Adam Neumann apparently had plans to become “president of the world.”

In many ways, Hathaway and Leto could be perfect for the roles. Each actor has played eccentric one-percenters in the past. Leto took a more sinister turn as a wealthy replicant designer in Blade Runner 2049, and Hathaway had a lot of fun in Ocean’s 8 as a film star at the center of a diamond heist.

There’s no set release date for WeCrashed, but there are plenty of other in-development projects mining tech industry drama. If a gangly take on WeWork seems more your speed, Succession’s Nicholas Braun is playing Adam Neumann in another version of the story. And if you prefer your scandals to be blood-oriented, Kate McKinnon is lined up to play Elizabeth Holmes in a retelling of Theranos’ elaborate fraud.
