Damar Hamlin: Buffalo Bills safety still faces ‘lengthy recovery’ spokesman said

CNN
 —

More than two weeks after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during a game, a representative for Hamilin says the defensive player has a long road ahead of him.

Hamlin’s longtime friend and business partner Jordon Rooney said to CNN: “Despite being out of the hospital, Damar still has a lengthy recovery.

“Damar still requires oxygen and is having his heart monitored regularly. He has visited with the team a few times but he still gets winded very easily. He’s upbeat and positive and ready to continue to overcome this.”

The statement comes just one day after Bills head coach Sean McDermott told reporters that Hamlin has been at the team facility almost daily, CNN previously reported.

“It’s limited, just overall, but he comes in and – it really just started really today or yesterday – just trying to get back to a little bit of a routine, just getting himself acclimated again, taking it one baby step at a time,” said McDermott on Wednesday as he spoke about Hamlin.

“His appearance, like walking around here, it’s a positive thing and to see three [Hamlin wears the No. 3 on his jersey] just smile and just wave and just put his hearts up and keep it pushing. It’s a positive energy bubble that’s just floating around the facility,” said offensive lineman Dion Dawkins.

The Bills are set to play the Cincinnati Bengals – the team Buffalo played against when Hamlin collapsed on the field – on Sunday in the AFC divisional round at 3 p.m. ET.

Carlos Correa signing: Twins agree to six-year, $200M deal with star shortstop after lengthy Mets debacle

The Minnesota Twins and free-agent infielder Carlos Correa are closing in on a six-year contract worth $200 million that includes a vesting option that could push the value to $270 million, CBS Sports HQ’s Jim Bowden confirmed Tuesday. The deal is pending a physical, which has complicated Correa’s deals with the Giants and Mets that were in place earlier this offseason.

This possible resolution comes after a messy several weeks in which the Mets and Correa reached a tentative agreement on a 12-year contract worth $315 million before the Mets hesitated over the shortstop’s physical. It’s believed that the Mets had concerns about Correa’s right lower leg, which he had surgically repaired as a teenager. Correa’s agreement with the Mets was preceded by his 13-year, $350 million deal with the San Francisco Giants that fell apart over similar concerns. His agent, Scott Boras, elected to move on and solicit other offers after the Giants took too long to reopen negotiations.

In subsequent negotiations with the Mets, the team’s offer was reduced to six years, $157.5 million guaranteed with annual physicals, the New York Post reports. Here’s a complete timeline of the Correa free agency saga.

It should be noted that Correa has not required a stay on the injured list because of his right leg since undergoing the operation as a minor-league player with the Houston Astros. The matter, then, is a predictive one instead of a prescriptive one. As for Correa’s Twins physical, Jon Heyman reports that the portion of the exam concerning Correa’s ankle has already been completed, which means the deal is likely to be approved from the medical standpoint.

Here’s how the deal would break down:

Dan Hayes notes that the first $200 million is guaranteed and that option years will vest based on at-bat thresholds:

Correa, 28, entered the offseason ranked by CBS Sports as the third-best free agent available this offseason. Here’s what we wrote:

In the past, we’ve referenced Bill James’ theory that it’s better for a player’s perception if they start hot rather than finish hot — that way, James once reasoned, their statline looks better for longer. Correa may be evidence of the theory at work. He started slowly, homering just once in April and producing a depressed statline that lingered into the summertime, leading people to believe he was having a down year even as he picked up his play over the course of the summer. Check his Baseball-Reference page now that the leaves are falling and you’ll notice that his OPS+ was higher in 2022 than 2021, a season good enough to earn him the top spot in our free-agent rankings last winter. Correa remains a very good player, in other words, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone if this time around he gets his rate and term.

A two-time All-Star, Correa hit .291/.366/.467 with 22 home runs across 136 games in 2022 for the Twins. For his career, he’s batted .279/.357/.479 while providing good defense at shortstop. It’s no wonder, then, how he’s accumulated nearly 40 Wins Above Replacement, putting him on what amounts to a Hall of Fame track.

Correa re-entered the free agent market after exercising an opt-out in his contract with Minnesota. As for the physical, the more brief contract span and lower total payout may make Correa’s Twins physical a bit less exacting than the ones he underwent with the Mets and Giants. However, if this offseason has taught us anything, it’s that nothing is sure with Correa’s next contract until ink is upon paper.

Marist dad slaying suspect Roy Johnson has lengthy rap sheet: police

The man suspected of fatally shooting an innocent dad visiting his kid at upstate Marist College has a lengthy criminal record and was denied bail Monday.

Roy Johnson was charged with second-degree murder in Sunday’s slaying, in which the unidentified father was shot dead during an apparent fight over coffee in the lobby of a Poughkeepsie Courtyard by Marriott hotel.

Johnson was ordered held without bail because of the severity of the case — and two existing felonies, police said Monday at a press conference.

The suspect’s alleged partner in crime, Devin Taylor, also was charged with two counts of criminal weapons possession in the second degree. Taylor’s bail was set at $500,000 cash or a $1 million bond.

Cops have also kept quiet on the identity of the slain innocent victim, who they said was an innocent bystander amid the bloody mayhem and whose family has asked for privacy.

Both suspects in the case were already known to law enforcement because of past run-ins, authorities said.

Officials said they would not be releasing further information about the two suspects’ alleged criminal past.

The suspect, Roy Johnson, was ordered held without bail because of the severity of the case.

Mike Brown introduced as Sacramento Kings coach, ready to embrace winning after lengthy playoff drought

A day removed from the Golden State Warriors’ championship parade in San Francisco, Mike Brown appeared 90 miles up Interstate 80 on Tuesday, reporting for duty as the new head coach of the Sacramento Kings.

“I hope I don’t get in trouble for saying this,” Brown said as he sat next to Kings general manager and president of basketball operations Monte McNair during his introductory news conference. “I really couldn’t turn up like I wanted to because of this doggone press conference today.”

Although his celebration was subdued after his third title in his six years as a Golden State assistant, Brown said he was ecstatic to discuss his fourth head-coaching opportunity after two stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and a spell with the Los Angeles Lakers.

“The potential here, I truly believe the potential is off the charts,” he said. “It gets me excited thinking about it. … The players here, I’m excited about.

“There’s just a lot of opportunity here for this place to explode, and I want to be a part of it.”

There’s nowhere for the Kings to go but up.

Sacramento hasn’t qualified for the postseason since 2006, and finished in last place in the Pacific Division in seven of those 16 years. The Kings went 30-52 this past season, firing Luke Walton midway through the campaign and then dismissing Alvin Gentry from his interim position after they finished ranked 25th in offensive efficiency and 27th in defensive efficiency.

Brown addressed the playoff drought head on Tuesday.

“There ain’t no elephant in the room,” he said. “You can speak on it. We’re going to embrace that. I’m not coming here to have fun, be excited, join the area. I’m coming here to win. So we’re going to embrace anything that’s in front of us that talks about winning. So, we look forward to it.”

Brown, who accepted the job while the Warriors were in the middle of their second-round playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies, said he was “heavily involved” in taking over the Kings while still finishing out the Warriors’ championship run. On Tuesday, he revealed a majority of his coaching staff, hiring Jordi Fernandez from the Denver Nuggets, Jay Triano from the Charlotte Hornets, Luke Loucks from the Phoenix Suns and Doug Christie, a former Kings standout whom he played against in college.

“I’ve talked to every single player on multiple occasions,” Brown said. “Some of them I talked to in person. Some of them I talked to on Zoom. Same with the staff that’s still around, talked to them on Zoom, talked to them on the phone multiple times. Obviously, Monty’s wife, she’s a great lady, but every once in a while she might get a little irritated with him because I think he answers my calls more than hers.”

He said he used an off day in between the conference finals and NBA Finals to fly down to San Diego and see point guard De’Aaron Fox work out. He calls him “Foxy,” a nickname he gave him in high school when he coached him at a basketball camp.

“Obviously I walked away impressed with his speed, but I thought he was a dog defensively,” Brown said of Fox. “So there’s going to be a lot of pressure on him coming from me, not anybody else, to get back to what I know he can do on this level night in and night out.”

Brown said the Warriors’ defensive success last season despite a roster rife with players with limited defensive reputations shows what the Kings can do on that end.

“People look at Steph Curry, [Nemanja Bjelica], Otto Porter, Jordan Poole, [Andrew] Wiggins in Minnesota, I mean I could go down the line of the personnel that we had with the Warriors and people did not think they could defend,” Brown said. “And somehow, someway, we ended up the No. 2 defense in the league. Now, will we be that next year? I don’t know. Probably not. It’s going to be a process. But I’m excited about all the guys.”

Brown also mentioned Davion Mitchell, Harrison Barnes, Domantas Sabonis and Richaun Holmes during the news conference, as well as the Kings’ No. 4 pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, as reasons to be encouraged about the team’s future.

“I’m excited about being here in Sacramento,” Brown said. “I have a lot of friends that live up this way. Nobody has told me anything or said anything bad about the area. It’s always been positive. And that’s even before I got the job. So, I’m excited about being in … what is it? Sactown. Sacto. Sac. The Big Tomato, something like that. There’s a lot of different nicknames for it.”
