Texas grid continues to be pushed to limit by extreme cold that could lead to rolling outages: ERCOT

One day after record-breaking energy use across the state of Texas, managers of the state’s power grid placed the system into an emergency alert stage.

Early Monday morning, ERCOT declared an “energy emergency alert one” also called an EEA 1, as the first of three alert phases. In this phase, the state looks to get electricity from other grids. The second stage shuts down large industrial users who’ve agreed to cut power in an emergency. The third phase is rotating outages.

Electricity use Sunday night shattered a previous record set in 2018 as exteme cold weather and frozen precipitation blanketed the entire state, crippled transportation and put most of the state below freezing.

The last time the state had to implement rolling outages was in 2011 when another major storm brought cold, ice and snow as far south as the Rio Grande Valley.

The 2021 storm is poised to bring even colder temperatures to the Lone Star State for a longer period of time.

The CEO of Texas’ Electric Reliability Council of Texas, better known as ERCOT, announced Sunday that the supply of natural gas to power plants was limited, and half of the system’s wind turbines had frozen, keeping at least 12k megawatts offline. ERCOT has a grid condition alert system that is now in ‘conservation alert’ status as consumption spikes across the state.

Outages typically last anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour. The rolling blackouts could repeat, all the way through Tuesday morning according to ERCOT officials.

Rolling blackouts are expected across the entire state. Experts say they are necessary to avoid turning off power to places like hospitals, police stations, fire stations, water and wastewater treatment facilities.

ERCOT in 2011 had to cut power to at least a million Texas homes during a record-breaking cold snap that year.

The similarities to the two situations are hard to miss: Both systems brought significantly colder temperatures, left roads unpassable with ice and snow, and led to some power facilities going offline due to the cold, leaving the state without enough power. In 2011, the state imported power from Mexico, according to ABC13 reporting at the time.

ERCOT officials said that lowering heaters to 68 degrees, closing shades to help keep heat in, and turning off non-essential appliances and lights can help conserve energy during the cold.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Saturday warned that all of Texas faces an unprecedented winter storm and issued a state disaster declaration. President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration for the state of Texas and ordered federal assistance to supplement state and local response efforts

Bubba Wallace becomes first Black driver to lead lap at Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Bubba Wallace ran into trouble early and late in his first Daytona 500 driving for Michael Jordan.

He still came out of NASCAR’s marquee race on Sunday with another milestone, becoming the first Black driver to lead a lap in the Daytona 500.

Wallace dipped to the low line late in the second stage to grab the lead on Lap 129 in the No. 23 Toyota. He lost the lead back to two-time defending champion Denny Hamlin — who co-owns 23XI Racing with Jordan — and ran third at the end of the stage.

Wallace got caught up in a fiery, chaotic last lap and finished 17th in a race won by Michael McDowell.

“Bum end. I bailed out down the back saw the wreck happening and got run over from behind. Should’ve bailed sooner,” Wallace tweeted. “Fast car, can’t have loose wheels. Onto the right turns.”

Wallace was forced to pit with 22 laps left in the race because he felt a vibration because of the loose wheel in the Toyota. He fell a lap down and pushed Hamlin to give his boss and Toyota teammate a nudge toward his run at a record third straight Daytona 500 championship.

Hamlin finished fifth.

“We worked together quite a few times,” Hamlin said. “I actually thought he was going to win the second stage.”

Wallace finished second in the 2018 Daytona 500 for the highest finish in the race by a Black driver.

Wallace had a solid first two-thirds of the rain-delayed race at Daytona International Speedway after a tumultuous start in Jordan’s debut race.

“He was running up front and battling for stage wins. That’s what we want to see,” Hamlin said.

Jordan’s No. 23 Toyota failed inspection twice before the race, prompting NASCAR to kick the team’s car chief out off the grounds. The car passed on the third attempt, but had to start from the back of the field. Jordan watched the beginning of the race from a luxury suite.

The six-time NBA champion had his first conversation with the 23XI crew chief when he called Mike Wheeler to find out why the team failed inspection.

Jordan entered NASCAR as the first Black principal owner of a full-time Cup Series team in nearly 50 years. He’s tight with Hamlin and has rooted on the Joe Gibbs Racing driver from the pits in the past.

This venture is no lark for Jordan. Jordan was a kid when his late father packed up the car and took the family to NASCAR races at Southern tracks like Daytona, Darlington Raceway and defunct Rockingham Speedway.

Jordan once said he sets his clock to watch NASCAR every week.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Jordan and Wallace never met until this week. Jordan hit town in the days before the race and played some golf — naturally — and had a made-for-TV team meeting with Wallace and Hamlin.

“I feel like he’s going to learn how to win. He’s got the talent,” Jordan told Fox Sports. “We would not have invested in him and picked him if he didn’t have the talent to win. By the end of the year, I think he’s going to have an opportunity and probably will win at least a couple of races. If it’s more, I’d be elated.”

Wallace was winless in his first 112 career Cup starts, all driving the No. 43 for Richard Petty Motorsports. Wallace is the only Black full-time driver at NASCAR’s top level and raised his profile last summer when he successfully called for the series to ban the display of Confederate flags at racetracks. His activism caught the attention of corporate America, which raised enough funding through five companies to sponsor the entire Cup season.

The 27-year-old Wallace flashed speed in the No. 23 Toyota — yes, Jordan’s old Bulls number — at Speedweeks and topped the only practice session this week. He qualified sixth before he fell to the back of the pack because of issues that emerged out of pit stop practice.

Immanuel Quickley, Derrick Rose lead Knicks to win over Rockets

A costly weekend due to Mitchell Robinson’s injury still resulted in two important wins against undermanned opponents for the Knicks.

Immanuel Quickley connected on four 3-pointers and scored 22 points — while replacement centers Nerlens Noel and Taj Gibson played well in the first game without Robinson — as the Knicks’ depth led them to a convincing 121-99 victory Saturday night over the Rockets at the Garden.

Derrick Rose contributed 16 points off the bench as the Knicks (13-15) took advantage of Victor Oladipo’s absence for Houston due to a foot and ankle injury, just as they had the previous night against the Wizards without NBA scoring leader Bradley Beal.

Julius Randle also scored 22 points and Elfrid Payton added 15 for the Knicks, who will host the Hawks on Monday. John Wall led the Rockets (11-15) with 26 points, while Eric Gordon finished with 24.

With Robinson facing the likelihood of surgery after breaking a bone in his right hand during Friday’s win in Washington, Noel made his first start of the season and finished with 10 points and six rebounds in a season-high 32 minutes. Gibson replaced Noel on the second unit and contributed four points and five boards in 16 minutes.

“Our starters and our bench, they’re similar in many ways,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. “The individual strengths are a little bit different with each guy. But in terms of what they bring for the team, you can make a case that you can start all the guys that are on the second unit.”

Noel came in averaging only 17.5 minutes per game off the bench, but he ranks fifth in the league with 2.0 blocked shots per game.

Noel converted an early alley-oop pass from Randle, and Reggie Bullock buried three 3-pointers during a 16-3 run for an eight-point Knicks cushion midway through the first quarter. Their second unit — with Gibson replacing Noel — closed off the period with buckets by rookies Quickley and Obi Toppin (11 points) for a 30-25 advantage.

The lead was extended to 14 with a 15-4 spurt, with the backcourt tandem of Rose and Quickley accounting for nine points. The duo finished with seven apiece in the half, and the Knicks led by as many as 17 while carrying a 63-47 lead into intermission.

It was the third straight impactful game with the Knicks for Rose since he was acquired last weekend from Detroit. He even studied videos with assistant coach Andy Greer at the team’s Tarrytown training facility after the Knicks returned to home from Washington late Friday night.

“He’s a great student of the game,” Thibodeau said. “He’s always had that. I think that is what has allowed him to adapt, grow and change. I think you see that with a lot of players that are dominant players. They are constantly adding to their game.

“So it doesn’t surprise me. I think he’s put a lot of time into trying to understand his new teammates and what their strengths are and how he can better effectively use them.”

Randle finished the half with 13 points and Noel added eight on 4-for-5 shooting as the Knicks shot 52.2 percent from the floor and committed just one turnover through the first two quarters.

The Knicks got sloppy in the third, committing four early turnovers, enabling the Rockets to cut the lead to five with 3:40 remaining. Wall pumped in 15 in the quarter, but a dunk by Noel and a two 3-pointers by Quickley pushed the Knicks’ advantage to 87-75 entering the final quarter.

Coronavirus News

Coronavirus cases worldwide reached 108.23 million. Covid-19 deaths topped 2.37 million.

Coronavirus cases in the U.S. have hit 27.98 million, with deaths above 486,000.

Stock Market Rally

The stock market rally continued to hover at record highs, trading up and down Thursday but in a relatively narrow range.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed just below break-even in Thursday’s stock market trading. The S&P 500 index rose 0.2% and the Nasdaq composite 0.4%.

The Bitcoin price jumped to a record high above $48,400 on Thursday, pulling back to just over $47,000. Mastercard (MA) said it facilitate Bitcoin and some other cryptocurrency transactions, while Bank of New York Mellon (BK) said it would be a cryptocurrency asset custodian. On Monday, Tesla said it had bought $1.5 billion in Bitcoin, sending the digital currency soaring.

Megacap Stocks

Apple stock edged down 0.2% to 135.13. Shares are consolidating just below a 138.89 cup-with-handle buy point. AAPL stock is finding support around its 21-day exponential moving average and just above its 50-day/10-week lines.

MSFT stock, a Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq component like Apple, rose 0.7%. It’s still in a buy zone.

The two FANG trillion-dollar stocks, Amazon and Google, lost 0.7% and gained 0.1%, respectively. AMZN stock is forming a handle as it drifts back to its 50-day line. GOOGL stock is trading tightly after gapping out to record highs last week on earnings.

Chip Stocks

TSM stock, no slouch at a $722 billion market cap, popped 4.1%, clearing a short consolidation to a new high. Nvidia stock rose 3.3% to 610.03, still in range from Wednesday’s breakout above a 587.76 buy point. The graphics chip leader raced past an early entry of $560.07 billion on Monday.

LRCX stock jumped 7.5%, just below a new high. AMAT stock leapt 6.7% to an all-time best. Several other chip-gear makers had big gains.

Among the best ETFs, the Innovator IBD 50 ETF (FFTY) climbed 1%, while the Innovator IBD Breakout Opportunities ETF (BOUT) advanced 1.2.  The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) rose 0.7%, with Microsoft stock a top component. The VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH) jumped 3.7%, with TSM stock the biggest SMH component. Nvidia, AMAT and LRCX stock are also major components.

Earnings

Disney earnings and sales beat while Disney+ subscribers now top 94.9 million. Disney stock rose 2% overnight. DIS stock edged up 0.75% to 191.05 on Thursday. On Monday, Disney cleared a 183.50 flat-base buy point after rebounding bullishly from its 50-day line recently. The buy zone for Disney stock runs to 192.68.

Datadog earnings beat views but its profit guidance was below some estimates. Datadog stock fell 2% in extended trade. DDOG stock rose 1.7% to 117.60 on Thursday. Datadog could test a 111.59 cup-with-handle entry, according to MarketSmith. The DDOG stock buy zone ends at 121.37.

Cloudflare earnings narrowly beat while guidance was in line. Cloudflare stock sank 7% overnight, below recent buy points. NET stock nudged up 0.4% to 91.24 on Thursday. Shares cleared an 88.87 consolidation buy point on Monday, with 87.25 as a slightly earlier entry. The official buy range ends at 93.31 for NET stock.

Affirm earnings and revenue topped fiscal Q2 views, with Q3 revenue guidance in line. Affirm stock fell 9% in extended trade. AFRM stock advanced 2.8% to 139.99 on Thursday. That cleared the IPO base after trying to close above the 138.08 buy point in the prior two sessions.  An early entry of 123.55 cleared Tuesday was a better entry.

Stock Market Rally Analysis

Bulls and bears have been fighting over the Nasdaq 14,000 in the past few days, with bulls gaining the upper hand into Thursday’s close. It would be healthy if the composite could hold right around these levels for several days or a few week. The Nasdaq is now 7.5% above its 50-day moving average, still extended and at risk of some sort of pullback. But the 50-day line could quickly catch up if the Nasdaq held around or slightly below 14,000.

Investors can thank Apple stock and the other megacaps. By going nowhere, they are helping to keep the stock market rally from overheating. That offers a little room for other leaders, such as chip and IPO names, to keep running. Of course, if Apple and tech titans began ramping higher, as they did in late January, the Nasdaq could quickly become very extended.

The major indexes have moved up and down in the past two sessions, but the daily swings have been relatively modest with slim changes by the closing bell. However, many leading stocks have seen big gains or losses — not just GME stock or Tilray. Investors have to keep that in mind that when developing game plan.

If the stock market rally sold off, with the Nasdaq retreating to the 21-day line or even the 50-day, many highfliers, especially IPOs, could fall 10%, 20% or more. What’s your strategy for your holdings?

Lillard, Carmelo, Targeted Defense Lead Trail Blazers Over Magic

The Portland Trail Blazers downed the Orlando Magic 106-97 in the first game after returning from a six-game road trip. Damian Lillard scored 36 in the win, with Carmelo Anthony pouring in 23 off the bench to pass Oscar Robertson for 12th on the All-Time NBA Scoring List. Portland native Terrence Ross scored 22 for the Magic, while Nikola Vucevic notched 27 with 15 rebounds.

The Blazers and Magic both ran injured rosters onto the floor. Orlando got even more bad news when Cole Anthony and the just-returned Al-Farouq Aminu both left the game with further injury. At that point they couldn’t generate enough defense, let alone offense, to challenge. Portland’s mid-rotation players filleted them from distance in the first half. Lillard scored 18 in the third period to make sure the opponent couldn’t come back. Anthony took over that same role in the fourth. Three-pointers and one star scoring at a time was enough to earn the win.

Fortunately we had some foresight and recruited Marlow Ferguson, Jr. to join Dave Deckard for a different kind of recap tonight. They talked together throughout the game, not just about the progress on the floor, but the progress of the season. Sit back and enjoy this mega-recap, courtesy of Dave and Marlow!

First Quarter

SUMMARY

This game began with a contrast in focus points. The Magic tried to go through Nikola Vucevic mid-range and in. Unfortunately for them, he missed 4 of his first 5 shots. The Blazers, meanwhile, tried to pour in threes. Gary Trent, Jr. hit three of them early, but nobody else could connect. The Blazers spent most of the period playing Analytics Ball: everything was either a triple or a layup. They build an 11-point lead on the back of Trent and good interior defense by the starters. In defiance of their usual pattern, the second unit kept it up…or maybe the Magic are just that bad at scoring. Either way, the Blazers emerged from the first quarter with a 31-19 lead.

COMMENTARY

Dave: So, what are you looking forward to most in this game? For me, it’s definitely seeing how they handle Vucevic and Cole Anthony. Point guards and centers are difficult matchups for the Blazers and it feels like either one of them could go big tonight.

Marlow: Hey Dave! The most interesting subplot of this game for me, is seeing what new wrinkles, if any, that Terry Stotts adds to this defensive scheme. This will be the Blazers’ first game since Saturday, and they’ve had time to rest and scrape some players off of that lengthy depth chart. Players often talk about not having enough time to implement new stuff because of time; how they cover guards seems like a fun watch for me, personally.

Dave: They seem intent on shooting threes early, at least. Right now it’s Gary Trent and the Bricklayers, though. Trent, Jr. has been so important to them lately! I almost feel like when he’s hitting, they’re bound to win. If he’s not, it’s dicey. Do you get that feeling too?

Marlow: I do! It feels as though this team has an entirely different confidence when he’s hot. I like the load it takes off of Damian Lillard, too. If he can just be “average” over the first three quarters and take over later, I think it bodes well for the Blazers in the short term and the long term.

Dave: Looks like you’re getting your wish early. The Blazers have done a good job defending inside. They’re not letting Orlando get anything easy. We’ll need to see what happens if and when the Magic start shooting from deep, but so far, I like the effort.

Marlow: For sure. I might be looking at it through rose-colored glasses, but there aren’t as many lazy, long closeouts in comparison to earlier in the year.

Dave: I don’t think it’s rose-colored glasses, but it may be the starting lineup. The second unit still closes out like blindfolded tree sloths. But if the first unit can show crisp “D”, that’s a step forward. Right now that’s all I’m looking for: forward progress until the injured starters return.

Marlow: I’m on board with that. Other than rooting slightly for former Blazer Al-Farouq Aminu to have a little success in his first game back, their defensive effort has been fantastic across the board. This team sort of worries me though; I was studying the Blazers’ press pass, and it never dawned on me how rare it was for the Blazers to have a lead going into the second quarter. In 22 games, they’ve led just seven times, so this should be fun.

Dave: You know who doesn’t have trouble starting out aggressively? Anfernee Simons. He’s basically playing pop-a-shot out there nowadays. His quick-trigger three looks risky until it goes in. How do you feel about what you’re seeing from him so far this year?

Marlow: Oh, absolutely! In between he and Carmelo Anthony, there should never be any worry about a shot clock violation. It feels the Blazers can beat any opponent if they get hot. As for Simons, I’ve been impressed. He’s still a work in progress on defense, but his shot selection looks cleaner, and he stepped up to the plate as an actual floor general on Saturday vs. the Knicks. Part of me wonders how differently that game turns out if Stotts doesn’t take him out as soon as he started heating up. And game-for-game, he’s making an impact in some way.

Dave: Better defense and playmaking will probably lead to extended minutes for Simons.

Second Quarter

SUMMARY

Both teams came out cold to start the second. The Blazers kept bricking mid-range shots. The Magic did the Magic offense, which amounts to a lot of dribbling followed by a missed attempt. The Blazers continued to compete on the boards, which saved their rear ends and the lead. Orlando continued to struggle as the quarter wound on. Portland wasn’t much better, but many of their shots counted for three, so it worked. Unfortunately for the Blazers, they couldn’t contain Terrence Ross on the drive as the half dwindled to an end. The Portland native had 11 in the quarter, many off of sharp penetration. The Blazers led 50-43 at the half.

COMMENTARY

Dave: Here’s another thing we shouldn’t miss. The Magic feast on offensive rebounds and second-chance points. The Blazers have been good so far at containing that. Enes Kanter may not be the perfect center, but he plays with enthusiasm and dang, he does great work cleaning up the glass. He’s been a big deal this season.

Marlow: It’s amazing, too, because I can remember their being some skepticism about that signing when the news broke. I think he’s put himself right up there as one of, if not the best offensive rebounder in the NBA. No. 4 in offensive rebounds, and the three ahead of him are all starters.

Dave: LOL! Skepticism where you were, my friend. We liked that signing here. But here’s something that drives me crazy. One Magic dribbler goes past one…two…three…four Portland defenders on the way to the hoop. They might as well be passing him cups of water and applauding. He missed the layup, but that’s an Orlando thing. Teams with talent are going to smash that kind of defense. I know not everybody in that second unit is a good defender, but is moving feet a little too much to ask?

Marlow: That would be our Blazers! If we played bingo during the game, you could count on them playing that cardboard cutout defense at least a few times per game. That certainly won’t fly against the top teams in the NBA. Do you think it changes a ton when Portland gets Zach Collins and the rest of the team back, or not by much?

Dave: Will Collins come back? Right now the expectations are zero or a trade. Anything above that is gravy. That said, Collins is good with his feet. His point-of-attack stance and effectiveness are still developing, but that man has a nose for getting in the right place on the floor…one of the few Blazers who does. I wouldn’t mind seeing him try, especially if he takes some of Carmelo Anthony’s minutes. I understand who Anthony is and the role he plays as an offensive threat, but that defense… ouch.

Marlow: That’s a good point. Thinking on it now, the best case scenario would be a June return, and that’s if the Blazers go full 2019 and make a deep run without a key big. As for Anthony, he’s still so much fun to watch play. I think he does so much in terms of drawing doubles and putting fear in defenses, even at his age. We’ve got ourselves a CJ Elleby sighting now, though. I’m wondering if Stotts is beginning to trust him more. That could make for an interesting forward rotation down the line?

Dave: He and Trent, Jr. just hit back-to-back threes as we spoke! That shot is so powerful, especially in a game like this. The ball and the rim are social distancing on Orlando’s end. Three points is, like, four trips’ worth of offense for them. But I like Elleby’s confidence. He’s playing like he knows he’s going to get minutes. His shot is relaxed and free. That’s cool to see in a rookie.

Marlow: Here’s something I learned just yesterday: the Portland Trail Blazers are actually No. 1 in the NBA in 3-point attempts at 42.2. I knew we had guys changing their shot profiles to become more 3-pointer heavy (CJ McCollum for example), but it’s been interesting seeing a team that perennially sat atop the league in midrange shots embracing the 3. The only thing that scares me … they’ve lived by it, but they’ve also died by it. That first Bulls game comes to mind. Do you think they take too many? (Is that even possible in 2021?)

Dave: It’s not possible with this squad. They’ll also need every drop of it if they ever face the Lakers in the playoffs. If they had the 3 and D, it’d be amazing. Instead it’s more like 3 and Meh. But you wouldn’t know it from this game. Aside from a couple, isolated stretches, they’re bottling up the Magic. You’ve gotta love seeing it (and you hope it carries over to the second half…Orlando is starting to heat up a little now).

Marlow: Agreed on that. If this were boxing, the Magic would’ve probably won this round based on how they finished. And it’s going to take me a few decades to have trust in the words “Portland Trail Blazers” and “third quarter.” I’ve seen this movie too many times in my young life, Dave! Here’s to hoping the Magic play just a little more drop coverage in that second half, and Lillard and Trent Jr. get a little boost going for that second unit.

Dave: Agreed. They’ve got to force the Blazers off the arc, not just on the initial look, but on the reset. It’s funny the number of times this happens. A team will defend the opponent as if the opponent’s priorities were the same as their own. It’s the NBA equivalent of buying someone else the Christmas present you want yourself. It works about as well, too. The Magic are preventing Portland from driving and they’re covering fairly well in the mid-range, but they’re sacrificing exactly the shots—often to exactly the players—that the Blazers want. I assume they’ll try to adjust.

Portland hanging even on the glass sure is helping too. Orlando isn’t used to that.

Third Quarter

SUMMARY

Damian Lillard came out aggressively to start the second half, looking to deliver the knockout blow early. He scored 6 of Portland’s first 8 points in the third, including a pair of threes. Lillard was the hammer that broke Orlando’s defensive cornerstone. After his barrage, the Magic seemed to quit playing defense. Portland passed or drove right around them for easy, open looks. Lillard poured in 18 in the third, providing the cornerstone for an offense the Magic couldn’t exceed. Anfernee Simons hitting a pair of threes at the end of the period (three total in the frame) made it unfair. Even though Portland’s defense got droopy, the Magic couldn’t make up points. Portland led 84-73 after three.

COMMENTARY

Marlow: Interested to hear your thoughts on this. The more I watch this game, the more I wonder how much confidence the Blazers will be able to take from this game, should they win. The Blazers’ rotations have been sound, and they’ve contested well. But this Magic team is a bit sloppy with their passing and shot selection. They’ve been disorganized all night. Are you buying stock in what we’ve seen so far, or do you think it’s just a matter of the opponent?

Dave: I think it shows exactly what you mentioned at the outset: when the Blazers are rested and prepared, they take it to a higher level. The scheduled won’t allow that for any team, though, so it’s a bit of Fool’s Gold. Even so, better this kind of effort and lead than lackadaisical play. Orlando is playing into it for sure, but Portland is taking advantage.

How about the guy we haven’t talked about yet…Damian Lillard? He’s come out scoring in the third period. You have to love his sense of timing. He’s been lying in wait, getting a little rest, but when the team gives him a lead, he’s ready to take the pass and run it in. His veteran savvy is just off the charts nowadays. Gone are the days when he seems unsure when and how to take over. He moves through his environment seamlessly, making all the right reads in the micro- and macro senses.

Marlow: I’m smiling hard just reading that. Reminds me of how much praise he was getting over the summer — the Kobe, Iverson comparisons and all — and how he just knew when to take over games. It’s a welcome sight seeing other Blazers step up in the early goings, just knowing he’s “resting” and saving himself for those decisive moments later. It’s one of those things I don’t think is an easy catch for everyone watching the game.

Dave: Now IF they can back it up with a little defense, the Blazers can walk away with this one and Dame can get even more rest.

Marlow: A fan can only hope! They’ve got the lead up to 16, and I think it deserves to be mentioned: something tells me the Blazers feel pretty comfortable about this one. Did you see that random switch to a zone defense a few possessions ago? We’ve seen teams pull that out as a way to disrupt rhythms, even if only for a few sequences. But when they’re up double-figures and playing solid man-to-man defense? I thought that was both creative, and sort of odd.

Dave: This would be the kind of game you’d want to get some live practice in. Throw the zone, switch it up. You might need that later. But for all this, Portland still can’t keep the lead much above a dozen. It’s so frustrating. They’ll put teams on the ropes, but they can’t get the K.O. The door’s always open if you really want to take it from them. It’s like the team is in love with drama more than victory. Or, perhaps, they just don’t know what success really looks like. It’s not just winning, it’s knowing you’re going to win and making it easy. The more the Blazers show they’re good, the more you see the difference between good and really good.

Marlow: I feel like that’s been sort of a trend for as long as I’ve been a Blazers fan. There’s always been a tendency to play down to the competition a bit. I caught some flack on Twitter a few weeks ago, but I’ll say it again: I love the dramatics and game-winners as much as the next man. But I’d much rather have a boring, 20-point win. And on that note, are we sure Damian Lillard isn’t lurking on here right now, watching us speak? He seems intent on putting a cap on this game here in the third.

Dave: But now Vucevic is tearing them apart and, predictably, when they rotate and overreact to that, one pass gets the opponent a good look. This is also predictable Portland.

I was talking with Dia Miller about this last week on the podcast. I think this is partly an artifact of growing up in a franchise without powerful veterans with a history of winning. Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge grew up together, and without peers. Lillard and CJ McCollum did the same thing after the Roy-Aldridge era ended. They never had that Buck Williams or Scottie Pippen to inculcate toughness, meanness, and the things you need to take that next step.

Marlow: I think I remember hearing that part, when you guys were discussing the Lakers, and how they still have that Metta World Peace mentality? (Oh, the irony.) I would agree. The Blazers have walked the tightrope with those gritty, hard-nosed guys — think Aminu, Wesley Matthews, or even Gerald Wallace. But I do think an enforcer would serve this team well, even if he didn’t play much. Do you think that’s something that can be cultivated in today’s NBA? I feel like the NBA’s policing would make it tougher, unless they went out and got one of the Morris brothers, or someone to that degree.

Dave: I don’t need the bad guy in a karate movie. I need the guy who’s going to go high or low, whatever it takes to bring home that win. Wallace was mis-timed. Matthews did fine. Aminu wasn’t high enough in the hierarchy and wasn’t experienced enough himself. The Blazers need a guy who’s already developed his game, gotten paid, and won. Now he’s the sergeant to Damian’s floor general. He barks at the troops, helps them storm the hill and call in support. He’s down in the dirt more than dirty. Basically the modern Blazers can be described as all officers and corporals (or privates), no NCO’s. I want the Master Sergeant.

Fourth Quarter

SUMMARY

Carmelo Anthony carved apart the Magic at the start of the fourth. He played from the block, hit threes, and did anything he wanted to do. He passed Oscar Robertson for 12th on the All-Time NBA scoring list and made sure the lead stayed stout. And that, frankly, was enough for the Blazers. Vucevic and Ross continued to score, but no faster than the Blazers did. The ‘Melo attack made it impossible for Orlando to threaten seriously, and Portland walked away with the win.

COMMENTARY

Dave: Ok, call it now: easy win, close win, or loss?

Marlow: Close win, for sure. I think the Blazers keep the Magic at arm’s reach, sort of like in those movies where they’re swinging but not hitting anything. But based on a life’s worth of knowledge on these Blazers, I’m thinking single-digit victory, and a dagger from one of the clutch players.

Dave: I’m going to trust in them, and in Orlando’s offensive incompetence, and say easy win. But if Portland doesn’t get a handle on Ross, they’re going to make it tough!

Marlow: And he’s the type of guy that can heat up in a hurry. The Blazers appear intent on forcing the issue with Anthony on that right block. If there were ever a time for him to kill some clock with those jab steps, and get to his spots, now would be the time. He’s in a great rhythm this half too, so I’m steering towards confidence now.

Dave: He is killing it. But this is the thing with Carmelo. He knows what to do in order to be ‘Melo. I’m not sure he knows what to do to win. It seems like he’s going to do his thing until it works. If that takes two minutes or two weeks, it’s all the same.

Marlow: Yeah, if there’s one thing we know Carmelo Anthony is going to do, it’s getting to those spots. Miss or make. I like to think that his presence alone has some benefits. Maybe not as much this season, but I can remember time-and-time again in the bubble, help defenders were scared to leave Anthony, even if only because of his name. It’s not an every night thing, but I think what he offers should help Portland buy time until the reinforcements come and help out.

It reminds me of a statistic I wrote about last April. The Blazers were 18-7 when he shot over 40 percent, and 4-19 when he shot under. So much of Portland’s fate seems to live or die on his right shoulder. It’s a fun debate to have on either side.

Dave: I agree. That’s the joy and the blessing. You like knowing you can depend on him, but you don’t really want to. I think ‘Melo is good for the Blazers the way they are. I’m not sure he’d be right for the team they want to be.

Marlow: So let me put you on the spot: if you’re Coach Stotts, and you have close to a fully-healthy roster come Playoff time, does he crack the rotation or make a major on-court impact for you? I feel a bit too diplomatic for this one, but I love hearing what others think about it.

Dave: Depends on the opponent, right? The Clippers and Lakers would probably chew him up. But if you need the bench to score and buy minutes of rest for the starters, Carmelo can do that. As you say, opponents have to guard him. That’s not true of all Portland’s forwards.

Marlow: I can respect that. And on the note of postseason talk, I’ve liked some of the decisions the Blazers are making tonight against the Magic, and it should benefit them going forward. They’ve found a way to get Vucevic back under wraps when they can get him on the same side with Covington and Jones Jr., and just switch. Gives them a feasible matchup either way. I think that versatility with Portland being able to switch is going to serve them well. Is it a hot take to say that Derrick Jones Jr. is among the flat-out most versatile defenders in the league?

Dave: The key word there is “versatile”, and it matters for just the reason you stated: switching. The Blazers haven’t had that luxury since Jusuf Nurkic broke his leg. They might pull off a switch, but they can’t sustain it through the possession without getting okie-doked into a mismatch with a center or small guard. If they just had a third player (Trent?) who could quick-switch and defend most anybody and if they could get some speed back at the center position, they’d be formidable. I can’t help but think a Trent, Jr. and Healthy Nurkic lineup with Covington and Jones, Jr. would be super scary and effective.

Back to ‘Melo in the playoffs for a second… The other possibility is that he provides that one “Magic Game”. You know, when a veteran comes out and scores 28, turning Game 4 from defeat to victory, saving the series? I could see him doing that if he and the team get the chance.

Marlow: I could see that too. He’s not the perfect player by any stretch, but he’s a threat for 20+ on any given night in my eyes. I’ve appreciated his defense and aggression in those must-win games. I can remember him being fully locked in during that Dallas game on TNT when Lillard went for 61, and then playing Anthony Davis physical in the postseason. As for the team defense … I feel like a bad fan for saying this, but if this team ever becomes just average on that end, I feel like the sky is the limit. At full health, they can have a top-3 offense. In the bubble, they had a higher offensive rating than Dallas, and they had the No. 1 offense in NBA history. The top-3 offense and a mid-tier defense … that’s good for at least homecourt and a favorable matchup, one has to think right? (Or am I setting the bar too low?)

Dave: With the West packed so tight, the bar is firmly in the middle for almost everyone. As long as Portland doesn’t trip over it, they should have as good of a chance as anybody. Any last thoughts as the game closes?

Marlow: I just think this is one the Blazers might be able to build on. It was refreshing to see Damian Lillard in a t-shirt instead of a jersey down the stretch. Their schedule shakes out favorably too, over the next few games, and confidence is huge. Here’s to hoping the Blazers play with urgency.

Dave: Thanks for the help on the recap, Marlow! We only talked about the game itself in stretches, but it was that kind of evening. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. Let’s do this again in another month or so and see where we think the team is!

Marlow: For sure, just say the word! I had a ton of fun with this myself. Always adds to the fun when the Blazers come out on top, too.

Final Thoughts

Carmelo Anthony’s scoring was on point tonight. He hit 5 of 9 threes and 4 of 5 free throws, coming just one make shy of shooting 50% from the floor.

Damian Lillard’s timing was impeccable. He poured in big points at the start of the third and the end of the fourth, queuing up and closing out the win. Going 13-13 from the foul line will lead to plenty of superstar stat lines too. The most understated part of Dame’s game tonight was one of the most decisive. (He went 5-10 from distance too.)

Derrick Jones, Jr. didn’t get in many cuts or drives, as he appeared to be favoring his leg. But he did grab 6(!) offensive rebounds. Robert Covington added 11 boards himself. That’s noteworthy forward rebounding production.

Gary Trent, Jr. torched the nets early but fell off late, finishing 6-18, 3-9 from distance for 15 points. Anfernee Simons inverted that, struggling early, then pouring it on in the third period. Simons shot 4-11, 3-8 from distance, scoring 11. The cumulative effect was someone being hot for Portland at any given time, more than enough to overcome Orlando’s anemic scoring.

Once the Blazers figured out the Magic weren’t going to hit threes, their swarming mid-range defense and rebounding prowess carried the game. Portland is formidable defensively as long as they can target a specific area. They just don’t help or move well enough to translate that into a full-coverage defense.

Coronavirus News

Coronavirus cases worldwide reached 107.36 million. Covid-19 deaths topped 2.34 million.

Coronavirus cases in the U.S. have hit 27.78 million, with deaths above 479,000.

Stock Market Rally

The stock market rally didn’t see much movement on the major indexes, but they all hit new highs. The Nasdaq topped 14,000 for the first time. The tech-heavy index remains extended from the 50-day line.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed just below break-even in Tuesday’s stock market trading. The S&P 500 index dipped 0.1%. The Nasdaq composite edged up 0.1%.

Among the best ETFs, the Innovator IBD 50 ETF (FFTY) and the Innovator IBD Breakout Opportunities ETF (BOUT) rose 0.9%. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) climbed 0.85%. The VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH) dipped 0.3%.

Market Rally Caution Flags

The stock market rally is at record highs while leading stocks are acting well. But there are a few caution flags.

Nasdaq Extended

The Nasdaq is now 7.9% above its 50-day moving average and 4% above its 21-day exponential moving average. When the Nasdaq is more than 6% above its 50-day line, the risks of a pullback increase. The more extended the index gets, the risks continue to rise, with greater odds of a significant pullback.

On Monday, the Nasdaq closed 8.1% above its 50-day line and 4.3% above its 21-day. On Jan. 25, just before a pullback, those figures were 8.2% and 4.1%, respectively. On Sept. 2, just before a correction, those figures were 11.6% and 6%. At the March 10, 2000 dot-com peak, the Nasdaq closed 17% above its 50-day and 7.8% above its 21-day.

So the Nasdaq could definitely keep running higher from here. What happens after that … ?

Ideally, the stock market rally could move sideways or pull back gradually for several weeks, letting the 50-day catch up without causing serious losses for investors.

Investor Leverage

Margin debt rose 34% in December vs. a year earlier. That’s a seven-year high, but below the 55% gain typically associated with tops before a bear market. However, call options exploded 437% in January vs. a year earlier. Along with the rise of leveraged ETFs, it’s clear that investor leverage is waving at least a yellow flag.

Market Froth

The huge gains in several hot stocks also raise some eyebrows about froth in the overall market.

Digital Turbine (APPS), EXP World (EXPI), Futu Holdings (FUTU) and Tilray (TLRY) are looking greatly extended and perhaps starting to show climax-type action. They could keep running or even go sideways, as Tesla stock has done after looking like a climax run in early January. But the risks of a sharp pullback are high. Investors should definitely have a game plan and exit strategy for these names.

There seems to be a strong desire for the next rocket, shrugging off the risks. GME stock and related Reddit plays are a clear example. Investors shouldn’t be jumping into an already-extended stock or asset with little care about what they are even buying. CAN SLIM investing is about buying the right stocks — with strong fundamentals and new products or services — at the right time, when the odds of success are highest.

The right time definitely includes the market, the M in CAN SLIM. It’s a confirmed stock market rally, so investors can still make new buys. But given the warning signs, they should be cautious about adding exposure and may want to consider taking some profits on extended stocks and cutting laggards loose.

Dow Jones Futures: Congress Fast Tracks Biden Stimulus Plan; Apple, Disney Lead 5 Actionable Dow Stocks

Dow Jones futures will open Sunday evening, along with S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures. The House gave final approval Friday night to a budget resolution that paves the way for President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus plan.

X

Apple stock, Walt Disney (DIS), JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Nike (NKE) and Caterpillar (CAT) are five Dow Jones giants in or near buy points.

The stock market rally is looking strong, buoyed by generally strong earnings and Biden stimulus progress. The indexes are at record highs with several new breakouts. Growth stocks overall had powerful week, with software, IPOs, cyclicals, China names and more big winners. Several chip stocks ran into trouble, but the sector did rise.

But the market is getting increasingly extended, among other warning signs.

Disney earnings are on tap Thursday night, but Apple, JPMorgan and Caterpillar stock have already reported while Nike isn’t due for more than a month.

Congress Fast Tracks Biden Stimulus

The House voted Friday night to provide formal, final approval to a budget resolution fast tracks the $1.9 trillion Biden stimulus proposal. The House voted 219-209 on party lines after the Senate approved the resolution early Friday, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tiebreaker vote. The House had already approved the budget resolution on Wednesday, but had to OK the Senate’s largely symbolic changes.

The budget resolution means a Biden stimulus plan can pass with a bare majority, instead of needing 60 Senate votes to avoid a filibuster. Democratic lawmakers will start crafting the actual stimulus legislation soon, with final passage possible by late February.

Because of Democrats’ narrow majorities, the Biden stimulus plan could be slimmed down even without any Republican votes. Negotiating with moderate Democrats could also win over some centrist GOP senators.

President Biden cited Friday’s weak jobs report as a reason to swiftly pass his stimulus plan. That thinking is one reason why the stock market rally had a solid session. He’s already signaled he’s willing to lower the income limits on new direct stimulus check, but he’s insisting that each check be $1,400.

Stock Market Rally

The stock market rally raced back from the prior week’s sell-off back to all-time highs for the S&P 500, Nasdaq and small-cap Russell 2000. The Dow Jones came within a whisker of record levels. Biden stimulus progress and generally positive earnings reports fueled the market rally rebound.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 3.9% in last week’s stock market trading. The S&P 500 index rose 4.65%, the Nasdaq composite 6% and the Russell 2000 7.8%.

Among the best ETFs, the Innovator IBD 50 ETF (FFTY) jumped 8.1% last week, while the Innovator IBD Breakout Opportunities ETF (BOUT) leapt 9%.  The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) rallied 8.1%. The VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH) climbed 3.8%, but stalled after Monday.

Breakout Watch: Stock With 539% Gain Enters New Buy Zone

Dow Jones Stocks Near Buy Points

While growth investors tend to focus on tech and other traditional growth areas, why look at five Dow Jones stocks? Apple is still a growth name, if mature. Disney stock has been rallying on Disney+ and other streaming hopes. Caterpillar and JPMorgan are economic cyclical plays, along with Disney and Nike, that are rallying with hopes for a post-pandemic economic recovery.

More broadly, these stocks, with their heft and different sectors, can offer diversity to a portfolio of highflying IPOs and other volatile growth names.

IBD Stock Of The Day: Is This Covid-19 Play Ready For Another Big Run?

Apple Stock

Apple stock rebounded 3.6% last week to 136.76, rebounding from its 10-week line and finding support at its 21-day exponential moving average. Investors could buy AAPL stock now, but it’s close to reclaiming the official 138.89 buy point from a cup-with-handle base. Also, 145.19 could be an alternate entry from a short consolidation above and below the buy point. Finally, investors could use a short trend line from that mini-consolidation, though that Apple stock entry would likely be close to 138.89.

Apple Car buzz heated up last night, with reports that the tech giant is close to a manufacturing deal with Hyundai-Kia on an Apple-branded electric car. But a late Friday report said those talks had stalled, with Apple still considering other automakers.

Nike Stock

Nike stock jumped 8.6% to 145.11, rebounding above the 50-day and 10-week line. Actionable right now, shares of the athletic apparel and shoe giant are close to a 148.05 flat-base buy point.

Caterpillar Stock

CAT stock jumped 5.6% to 193, rebounding from its 50-day line and a prior short consolidation. On Tuesday, Caterpillar stock cleared its 21-day line and a short trend line, offering a buying opportunity that’s still viable. The construction and mining equipment giant has been consolidating for a few weeks that could eventually be a flat base. There is an existing 200.27 three-weeks-tight entry.

JPMorgan Stock

JPMorgan stock leapt 7.2% to 137.98 last week, still within reach of its 10-week line. JPM stock is nearing 142.85 buy point from a cup-with-handle base going back to January 2020.

The 10-year Treasury yield is at 2020 highs, while short-term rates are still rock bottom. That widening yield spread is good news for banks’ core business of borrowing short and lending long.

Disney Stock

Disney stock rallied 7.7% last week to 181.15, rebounding from its 10-week line. DIS stock is still buyable from the 10-week line, but is close to a 183.50 flat-base buy point, according to MarketSmith analysis.

Also, buying ahead of Disney earnings on Thursday is risky.

In Disney earnings, Disney+ subscription growth and other streaming news may continue to be the catalyst for DIS stock. On other fronts, such as theme parks and movie studios, that will require the economy to open up as coronavirus vaccinations hit a critical mass.

Stock Market Rally Analysis

Last week’s rebound was surprising. After the prior week’s sharp losses, more selling, sideways action or a modest bounce seemed more likely. But the stock market rally had other ideas.

Unfortunately, by running back go and beyond the old highs, the Nasdaq is once again looking extended. It’s 7.4% above its 50-day moving average. When that’s 6% or higher, the odds of a pullback are relatively high. Now, the Nasdaq certainly can become more extended. It closed 8.2% above its 50-day line on Jan. 25, just before that week’s losses. In late August, the Nasdaq became increasingly extended, finally closing 11.6% over the 50-day on Sept. 2.

But the more extended the Nasdaq gets above its 50-day line, the greater the risk that the ultimate pullback will be substantial. After Sept. 2, the Nasdaq tumbled in the next three sessions closing below its 50-day line. The composite continued to slide in the September correction.

Other warning signs are out there.

While the stock market rally’s broad-based gains are a positive, there can be too much of a good thing. On Friday, 70% of all stocks are above their 50-day and 200-day lines. That’s unusually high.

Meanwhile, investor leverage is high, with fast-rising margin debt turbocharged by skyrocketing call options.

Big Picture: Market Hits New Highs; Why Investors Cannot Relax Now

What Investors Should Do

Despite those warning signals, the bottom line is that the stock market rally is still healthy, with the major indexes and leading stocks in great shape.

So you don’t need to be defensive, but be cautious about new purchases.

New buys just before a pullback often will run into trouble, forcing investors to quickly cut losses.

At the beginning of a stock market rally, investors might rush to build exposure, much like an old-style Black Friday, with a well-researched shopping list in hand. In the current environment, you need to be more selective, going through the aisles for some limited buys, if any. In fact, you might want to “return” some of your stocks to the market, taking partial profits or cutting laggards or losers.

Are you comfortable with your current level of exposure, and which stocks you’re holding?

Have a game plan for your stocks, so you’ll know what to do in various circumstances. Continue to go through screens, building your watch lists. Investors should always be preparing for new buys, and the process also helps you see which market groups and segments are leading.

Islands without structure inside metal alloys could lead to tougher materials

Proposed hierarchical deformation mechanism paradigm for the equi- atomic CrCoNi-based HEAs subjected to increasing degrees of deformation. Elastic deformation, dislocation-mediated plasticity, twinning-induced plasticity, TRIP, and finally solid-state amorphization. Triggering the next mechanism re- quires the generation of additional defects, i.e., dislocations and/or point defects (vacancies). These multiple mechanisms can interact, leading to a synergy of strengthening processes and a resulting highly complex microstructure. Credit: University of California San Diego

An international team of researchers produced islands of amorphous, non-crystalline material inside a class of new metal alloys known as high-entropy alloys.

This discovery opens the door to applications in everything from landing gears, to pipelines, to automobiles. The new materials could make these lighter, safer, and more energy efficient.

The team, which includes researchers from the University of California San Diego and Berkeley, as well as Carnegie Mellon University and University of Oxford, details their findings in the Jan. 29 issue of Science Advances.

“These present a bright potential for increased strength and toughness since metallic glasses (amorphous metals) have a strength that is vastly superior to that of crystalline metals and alloys,” said Marc Meyers, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC San Diego, and the paper’ s corresponding author.

Using transmission electron microscopy, which can identify the arrangement of atoms, the researchers concluded that this amorphization is triggered by extreme deformation at high velocities. It is a new deformation mechanism that can increase the strength and toughness of these high entropy alloys even further.

The research is based on seminal work by Brian Cantor at the University of Oxford, and Jien-Wei Yeh at National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. In 2004, both researchers led teams that reported the discovery of high-entropy alloys. This triggered a global search for new materials in the same class, driven by numerous potential applications in the transportation, energy, and defense industries.

“Significant new developments and discoveries in metal alloys are quite rare,” Meyers said.

Dow Jones Futures: Apple, AMD, Nvidia Lead But Stock Market Rally Warnings Grow Louder; Intel Headlines Earnings Movers Late

Dow Jones futures tilted lower Thursday night, along with S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures. The Nasdaq again led the stock market rally to fresh highs, with tech giants Apple stock, Amazon.com (AMZN), Intel (INTC), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Nvidia (NVDA) fueling the gains.

X

But the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite is becoming increasingly extended, raising the risk of a pullback.

Key Earnings Late

Intel jumped the gun, reporting earnings just before the close. Intuitive Surgical (ISRG), IBM (IBM) and CSX (CSX) reported quarterly results late Thursday.

Intel earnings and sales beat views while the Dow Jones chip giant also guided higher for Q1. Incoming CEO Pat Gelsinger, who takes over on Feb. 15, committed to keeping the chip giant’s manufacturing business, despite calls from some investors to shed those assets. Intel stock fell 5% overnight. That was after soaring 6.5% to 62.46 on Thursday, with some of those gains coming in the last few minutes on the early earnings release. Intel stock has been running on the announcement Gelsinger, Intel’s former CTO, will become chief executive. But it’s still far from a buy point.

Intuitive Surgical earnings and revenue rose slightly, rebounding from declines in the prior two quarters. The maker of the da Vinci robotic surgical system gave preliminary revenue figures last week. ISRG stock fell slightly in extended trade after closing up 10 cents at 798.67. Intuitive Surgical stock looks set to dip back below a 792.64 buy point. It could try to find support at the 10-week line again as it builds a short consolidation on top of the prior base.

IBM earnings topped views, but sales missed, once again declining vs. a year earlier. IBM stock tumbled overnight after rising 1.2% to 131.65 on Thursday. The Dow tech giant has a 131.98 buy point in a bottoming base. But it’s still in a long-term downtrend, with weak fundamentals for years.

CSX earnings missed while revenue topped. CSX stock was little changed overnight after closing down 1.7% to 91.61, around its 50-day line. An early January breakout from a flat base quickly fizzled, though the 93.80 buy point is still valid, according to MarketSmith analysis.

Tech Giants Eye Buy Points

As for other tech giants, Apple (AAPL) rose to just below a buy point. Amazon stock climbed toward possible early entries after regaining its 50-day line Wednesday. AMD stock moved back above key levels and within a prior buy zone. Nvidia stock rebounded from key support, but investors likely want to see a little more strength first.

But looming earnings — as well as the extended stock market rally — complicate buying any of those tech giants. Apple and AMD stock have earnings next week. Amazon is also next week. Nvidia isn’t due for a few weeks, but may move on AMD’s earnings and guidance.

Apple, AMD and Nvidia stock are on IBD Leaderboard. Apple stock is on SwingTrader. AMD stock and Nvidia are on the IBD 50.

Last Update: 4:24 PM ET 1/21/2021

The stock market rally continued to advance, once again led by tech giants.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost a fraction in Thursday’s stock market trading. The S&P 500 index edged higher. The Nasdaq composite climbed 0.55%. The Nasdaq 100, which includes Apple, Amazon, Intel, AMD and Nvidia stock, popped 0.8%.

Apple stock, a member of the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq composite, rose 3.7% to 136.87. That’s just below a 138.89 cup-with-handle entry. Apple earnings are on Jan. 27.

Amazon stock climbed 1.3% to 3,306.99, flirting with a trend line starting with the Sept. 2 peak. Investors also could use 3,350.75 as another early entry. Amazon earnings are due Feb. 2.

AMD stock rallied 3.1% to 91.53, back above its 50-day and 21-day lines and back above an 88.82 double-bottom buy point. Shares rose 2% overnight after initially falling following the Intel earnings report. AMD competes with Intel in PC microprocessors and data center chips. AMD earnings are due Jan. 26.

Nvidia advanced 3.75% to 554.70, above its 50-day. Several short-lived moves above the 50-day line have fizzled, so investors likely should wait until NVDA stock decisively clears at least the Jan. 11 high of 558.44 before starting a position.

Key ETFs

Growth stocks were mixed, with chips clearly leading.

Among the best ETFs, the Innovator IBD 50 ETF (FFTY) rose 1% to a fresh all-time high, while the Innovator IBD Breakout Opportunities ETF (BOUT) dipped 0.2%. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) edged down 0.4%. The VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH) climbed 1.55%, with AMD, Nvidia and Intel stock all notable components.

IBD Stock Of The Day Hits Buy Zone, Building On Gains

Stock Market Rally Extended

The Nasdaq composite is now 8.1% above its 50-day moving average, picking up from Wednesday’s 7.8% and the highest since Sept. 2. (With Apple stock and other tech giants rallying, the big-cap Nasdaq 100 is now 7% above its 50-day.) Further, the Nasdaq is 4.1% above its 21-day exponential moving average, the most since just after the early November follow-through days.

When the Nasdaq is 6% or more above its 50-day line, that’s a yellow flag. The odds of a pullback are higher. The market doesn’t have to retreat right away, but the more extended it gets, the higher the risk of a significant pullback or correction.

In August, the Nasdaq was generally at least 6% above the 50-day, with Apple stock and Tesla (TSLA) leading a big-cap rally. As of Aug. 25, the index was more than 8% extended, but it kept going. It finally reached 11.6% above the 50-day line on Sept. 2. But on Sept. 3, the Nasdaq plunged 5%, wiping out all the gains after Aug. 25. By Sept. 8, the third day of the pullback, the Nasdaq had wiped out essentially all of August’s gains, closing slightly below the 50-day line. It’s a classic example of the stock market rising on a escalator, falling on an elevator.

Ideally, the stock market rally would move sideways or drift lower over several weeks. Last week the major indexes did retreat modestly, but only enough to bring the Nasdaq from extended to “almost extended.” A bigger pullback or longer sideways action would be helpful.

But, as always, the stock market rally is going to do what it’s going to do.

What Investors Should Do

With that in mind, what should investors be doing? Right now, the stock market rally is working. There’s no need to get defensive. Investors may want to consider selling some stocks into strength, taking some profits. You probably should be cautious about starting new positions and adding exposure, especially if you’re on margin. Breakouts that happen just before a market pullback are highly likely to run into trouble.

Most importantly, have a game plan if the stock market rally does reverse. Where will you take partial profits and which stocks are your core holdings? Then stick to those rules.
