Delta flight from Atlanta to LAX forced to make an emergency landing after smoke filled the cockpit

A Delta flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles had to make an emergency landing after smoke filled the cabin and passengers thought ‘this was the end.’

Delta Flight 2846 made an emergency landing in Albuquerque on Tuesday after a mysterious smoke filled both the passenger cabin and the cockpit.

Video filmed onboard shows the cabin filling with smoke from the front end and passenger and podcaster Gary Vaughn said he could only see a ‘few rows’ in front of him.

‘I knew something catastrophic had happened,’ he said on his podcast.

‘Everybody was crying, everybody was screaming, everybody thought essentially the engines were shut down. And you could hear that we were just kind of gliding…we were still pretty steady. There wasn’t turbulence, there wasn’t anything.’

The pilot told the 193 passengers that they had ‘lost oil pressure in the right engine’ and that it had ‘lost all power,’ Vaughn said.

Throughout the whole process, Vaughn said the four flight attendants were up and handing out water to passengers.

‘The pilot had complete control of the plane. I don’t think he ever lost control of the plane,’ Vaughn said.

‘The screaming, crying people definitely thought that this was the end,’ he said. ‘It was harrowing at best. When you watch movies and see all of the frantic crying and screaming and you hear those types of things, it’s exactly what went on.’

A deadheading pilot on the flight reportedly told Vaughn the smoke was from the engine because it had no oil.

Passenger video shows the eerie scene as smoke filtered toward the back of the plane, significantly heavier toward the front as an alarm blared

Fellow passenger Mason Weiner said on Twitter that the smoke came from ‘burnt oil’ in the engine. Another passenger, who goes by Queen Rainey Reigns on Facebook, also claimed the flight crew told passengers there was no oil in the engine and that the plane was ‘decreasing in altitude.’

Delta has not released an official reason for the smoke. DailyMail.com has reached out for comment.

The pilots were able to land safely at Albuquerque International Sunport, according FAA Public Affairs Specialist Donnell Evans.

Passengers Gary Vaughn (left) and Queen Rainey Reigns (right) were both on the flight. Vaughn described the moment as being in a movie, saying: ‘When I watch disaster movies now, I’ll completely under the terror.’ Rainey agreed, saying she was ‘terrified’ and had thought to herself: ‘Oh my God, am I going to make it?’

Another passenger Mason Weiner said the pilots landed the plane ‘smoothly’ and were ‘amazing’

‘The crew was amazing and made everything as smooth as possible while making an emergency landing in #Albuquerque,’ Weiner wrote.

Various videos posted online by passengers show an eerie looking cabin filling with a light smoke, with a significantly heavier plume toward the front of the plane.

As passengers sat calmly, a piercing emergency alarm went off steadily.

When the plane landed on the runway, a member of the flight crew can be heard in Vaughan’s video telling passengers to ‘keep your seatbelts fastened’ while fire crews checked out the plane before it could taxi to the gate.

Rainey also said the plane started smoking when they were over Texas.

‘Y’all, it’s been a day,’ Rainey said. ‘So we [were] flying, we [were] in the air on the plane over Texas and the inside of our plane started smoking. The fire alarm is going off, like it’s beeping like the house one when there’s too much smoke…it was going off.

‘The plane is just smoking on the inside,’ Rainey, who had been napping on the flight, said on her Facebook Story. ‘What can you do 36,000 feet in the air on a smoking plane? You just sit there and pray for the best. That’s the realization of it all.

‘You just have to talk your way through and affirm your way through it, and that’s what I had to do.

The flight path shows the plane had taken off from Atlanta and landed in Albuquerque

The pilots (pictured) were able to land safely at Albuquerque International Sunport. The FAA is investigating the incident

‘It was an experience,’ she said. ‘I was scared, I was terrified. It was the second scariest that happened in my life…it was a moment of: Oh my God, am I going to make it?’

The plane landed safely and journalist Mark Johnson posted a video of the pilots, thanking them for getting them to Albuquerque.

The FAA is investigating the incident and 193 passengers were rerouted to LAX on a later flight.

Delta Airlines told DailyMail.com in a statement: ‘Nothing is important than the safety of our customers and crew.’

Delta’s maintenance professionals are looking into the plane’s malfunction.

‘Delta did a great job,’ Vaughn said. ‘I think their flight crew was tremendous, they kept everybody calm.’

Vaughn said Delta did offer them a $150 flight credit, but he doesn’t think it is enough after the experience they went through.

‘When I watch disaster movies now, I’ll completely under the terror,’ he said. ‘It was crazy.’

Video shows unruly passenger punch attendant during LAX-bound flight

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A passenger was arrested after video captured him punching a flight attendant during a flight from Mexico to Los Angeles Wednesday.

Video of the mid-air assault showed the passenger punch the flight attendant in the back of the head while they were in the aisle.

A 30-second video posted on social media showed the flight attendant appearing to talk to the passenger before he turned his back. The suspect then walks toward the attendant and punches him before walking away.

The incident happened on American Airlines Flight 377. That flight was destined to land at Los Angeles International Airport after taking off from Cabo San Lucas.

Footage captured the stunned reaction from other passengers on the plane.

A passenger on the plane told Eyewitness News that the flight attendant didn’t appear to be seriously injured and no one else on the flight was hurt. The witness, named Kevin, added that the suspect was restrained by other passengers and his hands were zip tied.

Before the assault, Kevin said the suspect began to whisper and said “There are 10 killers on the plane.”

“About that time the female flight attendant heard this and ran him back into coach. He sat there for a few, and then the male flight attendant went back there and confronted the guy,” Kevin said. “And the part of the video you see with him getting hit in the back of the head is him turning around, coming back to the front of the plane, and the guy just jumped up and hit him.”

The unruly passenger was arrested by law enforcement when the plane landed at LAX.

American Airlines said in a statement regarding the attack that acts of violence against crew members will not be tolerated.

“The individual involved in this incident will never be allowed to travel with us in the future, and we will work closely with law enforcement in their investigation,” the statement said.

“We thank our crew for their quick action and professionalism to ensure the safety of their fellow team members and customers on board. Our thoughts are with our injured flight attendant, and we are ensuring that they and their fellow crew members have the support they need at this time.”

Duane Brown arrested at LAX on gun charge

NFL Pro Bowler Duane Brown was arrested on Saturday after allegedly carrying a gun in his luggage through a TSA security checkpoint at Los Angeles International Airport.

LAX Airport Police confirmed the charge to ABC News after TMZ initially reported the news. The gun was not loaded, according to the TMZ report. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department confirms that Brown was arrested by Airport Police on a misdemeanor charge and held on $10,000 bail.

Brown, 36, has started at left tackle in the NFL since the Houston Texans selected him in the first round of the 2008 draft. He’s played for the Seattle Seahawks since a trade from the Texans in 2017. Brown’s played in at least 10 games in each of his 14 NFL seasons and started each of his 203 games played. He earned his fifth Pro Bowl selection in 2021.

Brown played last season on an expiring contract and remains a free agent deep into the offseason despite playing at Pro Bowl level in 2021. Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said in April that the Seahawks “have not moved on” from contract talks with Brown. But the Seahawks spent a first-round pick on Mississippi State tackle Charles Cross the next week, and Brown is still on the market more than two months later.

El Segundo: 3 people critically injured after LA bus crashes into semi-truck near LAX

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (KABC) — Three people were critically injured and more than 10 others were treated after a Los Angeles bus struck a semi-truck Monday morning near the Los Angeles International Airport.

According to El Segundo Fire Chief Deena Lee, the semi-truck was parked on the side of the road near Imperial Highway and Douglas Street as the driver was off-loading a scissor lift when it was hit by an LADOT bus.

AIR7 HD captured footage of the bus as it was flipped on its side in the middle of the street.

There was a total of 19 people on the bus, according to Lee.

Lee said the bus driver was sent to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in critical condition. Two passengers were also critically injured and two others suffered “moderate injuries.”

The rest suffered minor injuries, most of whom were sent home.

It’s unclear what caused the crash.

Meanwhile, all eastbound lanes of Imperial Highway at Douglas Street are shut down.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area and seek an alternate route.

The area will be closed for several hours, according to authorities.

This is a developing story. This article will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.

Johnny Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez helps man in distress on plane

Johnny Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez is being called “wonder woman” for rushing to a man’s aid when he experienced a medical emergency aboard a flight she was on, according to a report.

Vasquez, coming fresh off her career-making courtroom victory in Depp’s bombshell defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, was traveling from Los Angeles to New York City on an American Airlines flight this week when a fellow passenger collapsed and hit his head, TMZ reported, citing eyewitness accounts.

The unnamed traveler, who appeared to be in his 70s, fell while walking past Vasquez and her bodyguard, who were flying first class.

When a flight attendant called for help, the celebrity lawyer and her guard reportedly jumped into action.

Vasquez and her bodyguard were on an American Airlines flight this week when a man in his 70s fell and hit his head next to them.

Passengers said that Vasquez called her brother-in-law, who is a doctor, and had him guide her through checking whether the patient was having a heart attack or a brain hemorrhage, the outlet reported.

Vasquez’s bodyguard even took off his Apple Watch and placed it on the ailing passenger to monitor his vitals, TMZ said.

Vasquez was soon relieved from EMT duties by a surgeon who happened to be on board the flight — and who took over the life-saving measures.

According to TMZ, one of the cabin crew members told Vasquez that she was “wonder woman” and presented her with a bottle of champagne and a bottle of Merlot for her troubles.

Vasquez reportedly put her brother-in-law, who’s a doctor, on the phone, and had him guide her through checking if the passenger was having a heart attack

The pilot then turned the plane around and returned to LAX, where it was met by paramedics who escorted the patient off the flight. It is unclear what caused the man to collapse, and his condition is unknown at this time.

The incident is certain to raise the newly-minted law partner’s status to new heights.

The Depp-Heard civil trial, which ended with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star being awarded more than $10 million in damages for having his reputation besmirched, has earned Vasquez legions of fans around the world.

Cops found MULTIPLE guns at A$AP Rocky’s LA home after he was arrested at LAX

Police found multiple guns at rapper A$AP Rocky’s Los Angeles home following his recent arrest for allegedly shooting an acquaintance after an argument in Hollywood last year.

TMZ claimed law enforcement seized guns from A$AP Rocky’s home in a raid last week where officers smashed into the gate of his LA home with a battering ram and left the house with multiple boxes.

Police are running ballistic tests on the weapons to determine if the performer, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was the triggerman in the November shooting, TMZ reported.

Police also will check the guns to determine where they came from and who purchased them, TMZ reported.

The Praise the Lord hitmaker’s arrest is accused of approaching a man he knew on the street the night of November 6, then firing several shots at him.

One of the bullets reportedly grazed the victim’s left hand and he later sought medical treatment.

After the shooting, Mayers and two other men, who reportedly were walking with him, fled the scene.

Mayers was arrested on April 20, for assault with a deadly weapon. He had just landed at Los Angeles International Airport with pregnant singer Rihanna, 34, after enjoying a getaway to Barbados.

The soon-to-be father posted $550,000 bail and was spotted leaving jail.

Rapper A$AP Rocky posted $550,000 bond and was spotted leaving jail after his shock arrest last Wednesday

If convicted, Mayers could face up to one year jail time, a $1,000 fine and misdemeanor probation, per California Penal Code

The LAPD issued a statement saying officers ‘worked diligently’ to identify the suspect(s) involved’ and investigate the shooting.

If convicted, Mayers could face up to one year jail time, a $1,000 fine and misdemeanor probation, per California Penal Code. If he received a felony assault with a deadly weapon conviction, Mayers could spend up to four years in state prison, be fined up to $10,000 and have mandatory probation.

Last week’s incident is not Mayers’ first run-in with the law.

The rapper was arrested in Sweden in 2019 after a fight broke out on the street between his entourage and two men.

Mayers was convicted of assault, issued a suspended prison sentence and required to pay more than $1,000 in damages. He reportedly served a month in jail before his sentence was handed down.

The performer, raised in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood, also was charged with attempted murder at 16.

Mayers, who started selling drugs as a youth, was reportedly bullied by an older man. He went to the alleged bully’s house to confront him and ended up shooting at him.

‘He tried to come at me in front of some ladies. And I was little. He was a little bit older than me,’ Mayers said two years ago, detailing the incident on Untold Stories of Hip-Hop.

Los Angeles police issued a statement last Wednesday confirming Mayers’ arrest

Earlier this year, Mayers and his partner, singer Rihanna, announced they were expecting their first child together

Rapper A$AP Rocky, real name Rakim Mayers, had been arrested for allegedly shooting a man on a Los Angeles street last year. He was pictured days earlier in Barbados

The teen, who was carrying a gun for protection, said he thought the alleged bully was reaching for a weapon. He claimed he never intended to shoot the man.

‘I just started letting off,’ Mayers said of the confrontation. ‘I ain’t wanted to hit him. They hit me with attempted murder at first, then it kept getting dropped down.’

Mayers was arrested shortly after the shooting and spent time at the city’s infamous jail on Rikers Island. However, due to his age and the nature of the incident, the attempted murder charges were reduced.

Rihanna and Mayers reportedly threw a private rave-themed baby shower last Friday.

According to HipHollywood, Rihanna rescheduled her bash after the raid and arrest.

But Rihanna and Mayers made up for the initial disruption Friday night as their guests were asked to wear neon clothes. Everyone left with personalized gifts.

One of the presents handed out to the reported star-studded guestlist was a T-shirt that read: ‘I Went To Rih & Rocky’s Rave Shower And All I Got Was This Amazing Shirt.’

Rihanna, who has been lauded with her unconventional maternity fashion, donned a ‘huge fur hat’.

The couple reportedly wanted to keep the shower private. Attendees were banned from filming and were asked to lock their phones away in pouches upon arrival.

The singer, 34, revealed last month that she was in her third trimester, however she hasn’t shared her due date.

The pair seemed to be having the times of their lives while at her home country of Barbados. Rihanna flaunted her burgeoning baby bump in an eye-catching red ensemble, while Mayers had some fun of his own by going for a ride on a jet ski nearby.

While the rapper was cruising and beaming ear-to-ear on a Yamaha jet ski, Rihanna was watching him with binoculars from a nearby wall overlooking the water.

She has said of their relationship:  ‘What I love the most about us? Transparency with everything: how we’re feeling, what our goals are, what our fears and insecurities are.

‘The vulnerability to be able to say what you feel about each other.’

Earlier this year, insiders alleged the couple is planning to wed in Barbados with the pop star lining up Prime Minister Mia Mottley, 56, as the newborn’s godmother.

A source told the Sunday Mirror: ‘Rihanna is totally smitten with A$AP. They have a very close bond and Rihanna has always been quite traditional.

‘They will be married, for sure. She has told pals she wants to be with him forever, and he has said the same. There are no plans yet as to when the nuptials will be but it won’t be before the baby is born. She has always wanted to get married and A$AP is her forever person.’

A$AP Rocky Arrested at LAX in Connection with Shooting

Photo: Daniel Zuchnik/Getty Images

A$AP Rocky was detained Wednesday by the Los Angeles Police Department in connection to a November 2021 shooting. A$AP Rocky, whose legal name is Rakim Mayers, was returning from a trip to Barbados with Rihanna, his girlfriend, when LAPD and ICE officers detained him at Los Angeles International Airport. Eyewitnesses told TMZ he arrived in a private jet and was handcuffed at the terminal.

Per NBC, A$AP Rocky is under investigation for a November 6 shooting in Hollywood near Vista del Mar and Selma Avenue. A news release from the LAPD refers to A$AP Rocky and the victim as “two acquaintances” and says that they got into an argument that “escalated and resulted in the suspect firing a handgun.” The victim told officers that A$AP Rocky shot at him “three to four times,” grazing his left hand, before fleeing with two other men. The shooting does not appear to have been reported in the press at the time.

A$AP Rocky and Rihanna reportedly started dating in late 2020, though neither confirmed the relationship until May 2021, when he called her the “love of my life” in a GQ interview. In January, they announced they were expecting a baby, and Rihanna recently told Vogue she’s in her third trimester. Their recent trip to Barbados came on the heels of rumors that they had broken up after A$AP Rocky cheated with shoe designer Amina Muaddi, though those rumors were promptly dispelled.

A$AP Rocky has had several run-ins with the law in the past decade, including two assault charges following public altercations. In July 2019, he was arrested in Sweden after he and three members of his entourage got into a scuffle with a man in the street. Both parties claimed they acted in self-defense. A$AP Rocky was detained in Sweden for six weeks and after a trial was convicted of simple assault and required to pay $1,270 in damages.

NBC reports that Rihanna was with him when he was arrested, and law-enforcement officials have searched A$AP Rocky’s L.A. home. According to court records, he was released on bail hours after being detained and has a court date set for August 17.

A$AP Rocky is detained at LAX ‘for shooting a man on the street’ in 2021

Rapper A$AP Rocky has been arrested for allegedly shooting a man on a Los Angeles street last year.

Police detained the performer, real name Rakim Mayers, at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday, NBC News reported.

He arrived at LAX on a private jet after having just been on holiday in Barbados with his pregnant girlfriend, Rihanna.

The couple recently denied rumors of a split and cheating.

Police detained Mayers at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday after arriving to the facility on a private jet. He had been on vacation in Barbados with his pregnant girlfriend, Rihanna. Mayers is pictured at an airport in Bridgetown, Barbados

Los Angeles police were investigating Mayers, 33, after a man claimed the rapper shot him near Vista Del Mar and Selma Avenues on November 6 around 10.20pm.

The victim claimed Mayers approached him on the street and fired a handgun at him three or four times.

One of the bullets reportedly grazed his left hand.

Mayers had reportedly been walking with two other people at the time of the shooting. It is unclear who he was with.

Police arrested the rapper with the help of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A representative for Mayers did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s request for comment, however his attorney, Alan Jackson, confirmed to NBC that the rapper had been arrested.

Rihanna met the rapper’s family in Barbados over the weekend

Rihanna and Mayers announced they were expecting their first child together earlier this year. In March she revealed she was in her third trimester. The pregnant singer is pictured last month during Paris Fashion Week

Rihanna, 34, was spotted at an airport in Bridgetown, Barbados on Friday where she met Mayers and his family.

The couple looked relaxed as they greeted one another and chatted in the terminal with their loved ones by their side.

Their travels came as shoe designer Amina Muaddi, the woman accused of having an affair with Mayers during Rihanna’s pregnancy, fiercely denied the allegations of infidelity.

Muaddi took to Instagram on Friday to issue a statement after social media was alight with claims the rapper had cheated on the heavily pregnant singer with her.

She wrote: ‘I’ve always believed that an unfounded lie spread on social media doesn’t deserve any response or clarification, especially one that is so vile.

‘I initially assumed that this fake gossip – fabricated with such malicious intent – would not be taken seriously.

‘However in the last 24h I’ve been reminded that we live in a society that is so quick to speak on topics regardless of factual basis and that nothing is off limits.

The couple’s travels came amid allegations that they had split after Mayers cheated on the pregnant singer. They have denied the cheating allegations. Mayers and Rihanna are pictured together in February 2022

Their travels came as shoe designer Amina Muaddi, the woman accused of having an affair with Mayers during Rihanna’s pregnancy, fiercely denied the allegations of infidelity. Mayers and Mauddi have been friends for years and collaborated on a shoe collection in 2020. They are pictured together in 2020

‘Not even during what should be one of the most beautiful and celebrated times in one’s life. Therefore I have to speak up as this not only directed towards me but it is related to people I have a great amount of respect and affection for.

‘While Rih is continuing to live her serene, best dressed pregnancy life and I go back to my business – I wish everyone a beautiful Easter weekend!’

A source directly connected to both artists had earlier told TMZ that the cheating and split rumors were ‘100% false on both counts’, adding ‘one million percent not true. They’re fine.’

Mayers and Mauddi have been friends for years and collaborated on a shoe collection in 2020.

Rihanna and Mayers were initially linked in November 2020 after it was reported that they were seeing each other following the singer’s split from her ex-boyfriend, Hassan Jameel.

The two had been acquainted ever since the early 2010s, when they began performing and touring with each other.

Last week, Rihanna gushed about her partner in a chat with Vogue magazine as she explained how their relationship blossomed. The singer is pictured on the cover of the magazine’s May issue

Mayers first spoke about their relationship in May 2021 in a GQ interview, where he called Rihanna ‘the love of his life.’ The couple is pictured together at Rihanna’s Los Angeles Fenty store in February 2022

Rihanna and Mayers remained friends for much of the decade before People confirmed that they were officially dating in November 2020. The pair embarked on a romantic vacation to the singer’s native Barbados in December and the rapper spent Christmas with his girlfriend’s family.

Mayers first spoke about their relationship in May 2021 in a GQ interview, where he called the Barbados born singer ‘the love of his life.’

The Fashion Killa hitmaker – who has never been dogged with claims of infidelity in the past – said: ‘She amounts to probably, like, a million of the other ones…. I think when you know, you know. She’s the One.’

Rihanna and Mayers announced they were expecting their first child together earlier this year. In March she revealed she was in her third trimester.

Last week, Rihanna gushed about her partner in a chat with Vogue magazine as she explained how their relationship blossomed.

‘People don’t get out of the friend zone very easily with me,’ she revealed. ‘And I certainly took a while to get over how much I know him and how much he knows me, because we also know how much trouble we can land each other in.’

She said that quarantine had brought the pair closer together, noting: ‘He became my family in that time.

Sources allege the couple is planning to wed in Barbados sometime in the near future. Mayers and Rihanna are pictured together in February

‘There’s no pretentious my-brand-your-brand bulls**t, it’s just us living. I just feel like I can do any part of life by his side.’

She continued:  ‘What I love the most about us? Transparency with everything: how we’re feeling, what our goals are, what our fears and insecurities are.

‘The vulnerability to be able to say what you feel about each other.’

Earlier this year insiders alleged the couple is planning to wed in Barbados with the pop star lining up Prime Minister Mia Mottley, 56, as the newborn’s godmother.

Many Ohio schools are lax about required vax, we found

CLEVELAND — The state of Ohio requires all students coming into kindergarten to have been vaccinated against things like measles, mumps, diphtheria and more. But how well are your kids’ schools following the rules? Our exclusive News 5 investigation uncovers a troubling trend.

Watch Investigator Jonathan Walsh’s report on News 5 at 6 p.m.

We are trying to come out of a worldwide pandemic, and Jenny Weiss from Cleveland is worried.

“I don’t want another outbreak. I don’t want to be stuck in my house,” said Weiss.

Her two sons attend Cleveland Metro’s Charles A. Mooney School on the west side, a school our investigation reveals that, even before the pandemic, more than half the kindergartners were missing at least one vaccination for infections like diphtheria, measles and whooping cough.

News 5

News 5 animation showing some of the diseases for which vaccination against is required before attending school in Ohio.

“My kids, in order to go to kindergarten, they had to be updated on all their shots,” said Weiss. “So, I had to call the doctor.”

And when the pandemic hit, things got worse in Ohio. We analyzed childhood vaccination rates from data provided by the Ohio Department of Health for kindergartners since 2017. We found that both during the pandemic and pre-pandemic, numerous schools in districts across our area have been falling short of what Ohio laws require. So much so that local doctors are concerned.

How did your child’s school fare? Below is a searchable database showing the percent of Kindergarten students missing at least one vaccination at every school in Ohio for the pre-pandemic 2018-2019 school year.

“It was fascinating to see which schools were on that list,” said Dr. Shelly Senders from Senders Pediatrics.

And it’s not just the Charles A. Mooney School. Many other CMSD schools had problems, too, before the pandemic. Cleveland parents we talked to had no idea.

News 5

Our investigation found what percent of Kindergartners at these CMSD schools are missing at least one required vaccine during the 2018-2019 school year.

“It ain’t like they’re going to go around saying, ‘Oh, I got a shot,’” said Heather Pesta, who has several kids in or about to attend school in CMSD.

Ohio law makes it clear: “Students who don’t meet the full requirements, do not provide proof of immunizations, do not have immunization exemption or who are not in-process (of getting the shots) are not permitted to remain in school for more than 14 days.”

“If they’re not going to do it, they should be remote,” said Weiss. “Have them do at-home learning until they’re vaccinated.”

CMSD refused to go on camera but did send a statement that said, in part: “families might lack a regular (medical) provider…” or “fail to submit documentation.”

The data shows Akron also saw concerning rates even before the pandemic. Akron did not go on camera either, but said, in part: “…if a student’s vaccine series is ‘in progress’ [sic] the student can…attend classes.”

News 5

Our investigation found what percent of students at these Akron schools are missing at least one required vaccine.

The data shows, though, only some families claim they are in process, and religious or health exemptions are very rare.

“We’re certainly concerned that immunizations are lower than they have been previously,” said Dr. David Karas, who is a pediatrician with Akron Children’s Hospital. “We really want to have those conversations with families to reassure them that vaccines are safe and important,” Dr. Karas told us.

The Ohio Department of Education said it doesn’t enforce the vaccination requirements. The Ohio Department of Health told us it doesn’t either, but that it’s up to the school districts’ nurses and administrators to impose the rules on vaccinations.

News 5/ODH/Ohio DOE

Relevant text from ODH and Ohio DOE policies showing neither agency is responsible for enforcing the vaccine requirements or penalizing students who attend school without the required vaccinations.

“When I saw [our vaccination data] I thought, ‘Wow! This is clearly a health and safety issue that we need to… another one of the health and safety issues that we need to work through,’” said Ralph E. Johnson, the CEO of BreakThrough Public Schools. He took on that role about five months ago.

The ODH data shows the BreakThrough system has also struggled with vaccinations despite state requirements.

“That probably is what the letter of the law says,” said Johnson. “I think having a Kindergartner that needs to go to school not be in school is not a good thing.”

Prioritizing student education was a common theme among school officials who spoke about vaccination requirements.

“Our mission is to educate children first and foremost,” said Natalee Long, the Sr. VP of Operations at Accel Schools, which has buildings in Cleveland, Lorain, Parma and more. “We’re going to do that and we’re not going to allow anything to get in the way.”

She told us vaccination rates depend on nurses getting the correct data to ODH, parents’ involvement with their children and consistent staffing. She said despite high rates of children who are not fully vaccinated in some of its schools, Accel won’t keep kids out of class.

We asked what she would say to parents who might be worried about unvaccinated kids being allowed in the classroom.

“I would say that is a direct result of free and appropriate public education,” said Long. “We can’t prohibit a child from attending despite their vaccination status.”

Doctors and the Ohio Department of Health told us nurses and administrators actually can prevent students who are not fully vaccinated from attending class.

“What fascinated me about that is that the school nurses allowed them to go to school,” Senders said.

The protection the vaccines provide is important. For three years just before COVID (2017-2019), ODH reported our state saw 167 cases of mumps, over 1,300 cases of chickenpox, and nearly 2,500 patients with whooping cough.

How many cases Ohio has seen of several of the diseases for which vaccines are required for students attending school.

Weiss pleaded with fellow parents to do what’s required now for her son’s sake and for all students.

“Please get your kids vaccinated,” said Weiss. “It’s for their health.”

However, one thing we found is that there’s no real oversight on the vaccination requirements, no consequences that are enacted.

The good news is that because of what school districts learned through the COVID pandemic and how they were able to help get vaccines to students, those processes will may be beneficial to help increase the other vaccines as well.

Where does your child’s school stand now? Below is a searchable database showing the percent of Kindergarten students missing at least one vaccination at every school in Ohio, based on the most recent available data from the 2020-2021 school year.

Here’s the statement from CMSD:

The reasons for our immunization rates can vary.

Besides the exceptions permitted by state law, families might lack a regular provider or “medical home,” be wary of vaccines or fail to submit documentation.

In addition, if students are homeless, federal law allows families to enroll without providing medical records. Once the students are enrolled we work to connect their families to services.

CMSD, with help from community partners, is taking steps to ensure that all students’ needs for immunization and other aspects of health care are met. These include:

· Offering comprehensive mental and physical health services, including immunizations, in schools. With support from the Cleveland and George Gund foundations and Say Yes to Education, we are piloting the model at four buildings and hope to expand it across the district. Under this model, a single consent form gives students access to a range of providers at little or no cost to their families.

· Hosting MetroHealth mobile clinics that make scheduled rounds to 13 schools. Personnel who staff the clinics can administer immunizations with parental consent.

· Assigning a healthcare professional to every building, effective this school year. Besides tending to immediate needs, these school nurses and LPNs can provide healthcare education, help families navigate the healthcare system and assist them in finding a medical home.

· Working with Say Yes to Education to place a Say Yes family support specialist in every building for SY2022-23. The specialists, who are licensed social workers, help families and students get the services they need to overcome barriers to success.

A statement from Akron Public Schools is below, along with their answers to questions we asked a district spokesperson via email:

The Ohio Department of Health added additional vaccine requirements beyond the original standard enrollment that occurs at the Kindergarten level enrollment.  Additional new vaccines or boosters for standard vaccines needed for enrollment were added for students in grades 7-12 depending on the type of vaccine.  Instructing families of these additional requirements has been a challenge that we have taken on through informational outreach in conjunction our school health providers; local county health professionals and direct mail announcements.

There are also students that must be serve per law, such as unaccompanied minors, that public schools district are required to enroll upon arrival to the district.  The district has a number of homeless students that are very mobile within the region and the Akron area services a number of immigrant populations that enroll upon entry into the USA/local community (APS currently has 1,400 students that are considered ESL learners) that come from countries that have wide variance with vaccination requirements.

Per the instructions provided by the Ohio Department of Health, if a student’s vaccine series is “in progress” the student can be enrolled or attend classes.  A delay in completing the series in the prescribed manner can be a challenge.   APS and school health team members continue to outreach to families to remind of that their vaccines must be updated.

All families receive a direct mailing of the Immunization Requirements annually at the beginning of each school year.  This information is also available on the district’s website; each school works with families to provide them information on where vaccination are available and our local school health providers have also set up school clinics that are open to the any student that needs to receive a vaccine to make opportunity for vaccine administration as close to their residence as possible.

We understand the pandemic played a significant role as families just didn’t take their children to doctors’ appointments out of fear of catching COVID.

Q: Can you help us understand how compliance is handled within the district? If a child doesn’t have all the shots, what does APS do?

APS sends directed information to the parent/guardian of the student informing them of non-compliance and every effort is  to provide vaccination locations information  within the community that offer the correct services to become compliant.  Continued outreach and follow up by APS staff is ongoing until standards are met.

There are state requirements to follow when it comes to these kinds of vaccines.

Q: You mentioned efforts have been renewed. What are those efforts?

Children’s Hospital’s Mary Schatz told me Ohio is back working on compliance with public health departments, just as it was pre-COVID. This is correct.

Q: How will the numbers improve in your estimation?

The goal is to have every student be compliant unless there is a justified medical reason provided by the attending physician of a student not to meet this requirement going forward.
