CES 2023’s Wildest Highlights: Stunning Cars, 3D Laptops and Shape Shifting Screens

CES means three things: A lot of hype, a lot of noise and a lot of dazzling new tech. The world’s biggest consumer electronics show is officially on, with media day kicking off in Las Vegas on Wednesday. We’re live on the CES show floor trying it all, sifting through it all to bring you the coolest, wackiest, most innovative new tech we spot.

So far, we’ve gotten a glimpse into what companies like Samsung, LG, Intel, Nvidia and Dell have in store for 2023: beautiful TVs, beastly gaming rigsan 8K projector and even a futuristic concept device or two. Beyond this year, we’ve gotten the big news that Sony is making its own car, scheduled to hit the roads in 2026.

We’re just getting started. CES rolls on until Sunday, so there’s plenty of weird and wonderful tech to be discovered yet. Consider this your tl;dr for CES 2023 — if you read only one CES recap (but why stop there?), make it this one.

Sony’s first car is coming in 2026

James Martin/CNET

EVs are big business, and Sony wants in. The electronics giant is teaming up with Honda on a new brand of electric vehicle called Afeela. The Afeela logo appeared on a narrow screen or “media bar” on the vehicle’s front bumper that can also interact and share information with people outside the vehice or passersby such as the weather or the car’s state of charge.

Unlike the car Sony showed off at CES 2020, all those years ago, this one is actually hitting the market. No word yet on pricing, but Sony said its Afeela car will hit North American roads in 2026. Japan and Europe will follow.

BMW’s concept car doubles as your buddy

BMW’s i Vision Dee concept car.

BMW

Technology can be so impersonal. BMW’s i Vision Dee hopes to fix that. Using sophisticated AI, this concept car ditches the servant schtick of Siri and Alexa. Instead, it hopes to double as both your car and your friend. BMW’s i Vision Dee is an EV sports car with an exterior of 240 e-ink panels. You can use those panels to program a digital face into the car’s grille — because it’s an EV, the ventillation grille’s typically provide isn’t actually needed — or change the cars colors at the click of a button.

The BMW i Vision Dee is for now just a concept, but some of its features will trickle out to BMW’s actual cars. BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said, for instance, that the AI-powered HUB technology the company put into i Vision Dee will come to real cars in 2025.

Samsung’s Flex Hybrid concept folds on one side.

Samsung Display

Samsung gave us a look at a tantalizing mobile device concept, the Flex Hybrid. As the model above shows, the left side of the Flex Hybrid can fold, like the Galaxy Fold, while the right side can slide out to extend itself.

The concept comes courtesy of Samsung Display, not the Mobile arm of the South Korean megacorporation responsible for making and selling phones. But the press release showing off the concept promised it’ll bring to CES “innovative OLED products of all sizes, small, medium and large, to provide a glimpse into the future of displays.” Samsung isn’t the only company tinkering with the future of phones — see TCL’s 2020 scrolling display — so watch this space for more flipping, folding and scrolling devices.

A laptop in (glasses-free) 3D

Asus joins Acer for laptops with glasses-free 3D, but hitches its wagon to OLED instead of IPS.

Asus

Images leap off the screen of this ASUS laptop — not literally, but close. Its OLED screen produces a 3D experience sans glasses, much like competitor Acer’s similar IPS version. The OLED screen matters because the technology promises a visibly crisper 3D rendering. Asus’s 3D panel, aimed at creatives, uses eye-tracking to produce the 3D experience.

A TV with no wires… and no remote

Scott Stein/CNET

CES has TVs — lots of ’em. But while the likes of Samsung, LG and TCL fight over getting the darkest blacks, the crispest image or the best-value TVs, a startup by the name of Displace TV is doing something different. It’s making TVs go wireless. No more finding creative ways to hide your TV chords, the company’s 55-inch OLED screen is designed to be stuck to walls or windows using suction cups.

Displace TV uses batteries rather than a wired connection for power, and you’ll use motion controls to change channels and adjust the volume rather than a remote. Read more about it here

Smartwatches want to know if you’re OK

The Citizen CZ Smart watch debuted at CES and will arrive in the US this March.

Citizen

Smartwatches to track heart rate, sleep quality and blood-oxygen levels abound, but Citizen takes it a step further with its CZ Smart watch, which also measures fatigue and alertness levels. It’ll even tell you your chronotype — that is, whether you’re a night owl or an early bird. It’s another sign that smartwatch makers are focusing more and more on measuring the way sleep and stress impact overall wellbeing.

The thinnest gaming laptop in the world

The Alienware x14 is the thinnest 14-inch gaming laptop.

Josh Goldman/CNET

Alienware surprised us with four new laptops ahead of CES, including the Alienware x14, which the company said is the thinnest 14-inch gaming laptop in the world. Featuring a 2,560×1,600-pixel display with a 165Hz refresh rate, it’ll sell from $1,799 when it ships this winter. A bigger version, the Alienware x16, starts at $3,099. These laptops are for people who are willing to sacrifice some power for slicker designs.

Invisible laptop touchpads

The LG Gram’s hidden trackpad lights up under your fingertips.

LG

LG showed off its new Gram Style laptop, which features a hidden touchpad that presents itself only when you touch the palm rest. The stealthy haptic touchpad lights up under your fingers when touched, showing you where to tap and drag to navigate the screen. It’s a neat detail we didn’t know we wanted.

A giant leap for PC gamers who also use consoles

Dell’s Nyx concept controller.

Josh Goldman/CNET

Dell’s Concept Nyx gaming controller looks at first glance like just another third-party Xbox controller, albeit with some fancy lights. Alas, it’s more than that. The Nyx controller is tricked out with a bunch of hidden inputs, which multiply the functionality of the controller.

The idea seems to be to bridge the gap between a gamepad and a keyboard. PC gamers are able to use hotkey setups to have dozens of inputs, far more than the typical gamepad, which is often limited to the options presented by a d-pad. That means they can use a wider range of attacks in an MMO, for instance, or cycle between six or seven guns in a first-person shooter rather than the two or three that console gamers are often limited to.

A fridge built to party

The LG MoodUp works hard and plays hard.

LG

Keeping your food fresh is an important job; the humble fridge deserves a chance to let its hair down. LG’s MoodUp fridge has an exterior of LED panels, which allow for 190,000 different color combinations — and It features a bluetooth speaker via, making the panels pulsate with music being played. The MoodUp fridge is about more than refrigeration. It’s about the vibe

Those LED panels can do practical things too, like flash when you’ve left a fridge door open for too long. The upper right panel becomes transparent with the nudge of a finger, allowing you to see what’s inside without letting any cold air out. But mostly, it does the vibe thing.

Roku has entered the chat

Roku will now make its own TVs.

Roku

Roku announced it’s expanding into TVs, essentially competing with its own partnerships with more established TV makers such as TCL, Hisense and Sharp. The move has long been rumored and makes a lot of sense for the streaming device maker. Roku TVs will come with the brand’s Voice Remotes, which include the popular (and ever-useful) “find my remote” feature. Looks like LG and Samsung have some new competition.

The TV that puts all others to shame

As if a 97-inch OLED TV wasn’t enough, LG went and made it wireless.

LG

It’s the world’s largest OLED TV: LG’s 97-inch model was actually unveiled last year, but in 2023 it’s gone wireless. That means the world’s largest screen with the best picture that technology allows is now free of that ugly jumble of cords. We’ve been covering TVs at CES for years, and even we were surprised — CNET TV guru David Katzmaier was so impressed, he says LG is putting all other TVs to shame with this one.

Upgrades coming to your laptop’s brains

Intel’s 13-gen announcements tell us a lot about upcoming laptops.

Intel

Sleek displays and dazzling screens are nice, but often it’s the tech you don’t see that matters most. Intel unveiled a boatload of new 13th-generation processors, which will power a huge range of products and improve performance on a wide range of laptops.

Less abstract than chip performance are the upgrades they can yield. The new generation of Intel CPUs bring with them Unison, which lets iPhone and Android devices send and receive texts from your PC, as well as Thunderbolt 4, which among other improvements will set as a standard the ability to run two 4K external displays. Expect to see these features in product announcements over the next few days.

Then there was AMD’s press conference. Much of what the company touted was its pro-grade tech, like the AMD chips that were used to build Avatar 2’s visual effects. As far as products you can actually buy, AMD has partnered with HP for the Dragonfly Pro, a laptop designed for freelancers, and Lenovo for new Legion Pro gaming laptops. For PC gamers, AMD’s high-end Ryzen 7 7800X3D and 7950X3D processors are coming this year.

Cloud gaming, now in your car

Nvidia brings GeForce Now to your car.

Nvidia

Chief among Nvidia’s announcements are improvements to GeForce Now, its cloud gaming service, which allows you to stream games on laptops, phones and more. In short, the power of Nvidia’s GeForce 4080 GPU is coming to the cloud. If you subscribe to the premium tier of GeForce Now — henceforth known as GeForce Now Ultimate — you can now stream games at 240Hz, utilize ray tracing (which significantly improves how light is rendered in-game) and DLSS 3 (which uses an algorithm to boost frame rate while retaining image quality).

Plus, GeForce Now is coming to… cars. If your car has a screen on its dash, you can play while the car is in park. If there are screens behind the driver or passenger seats, those sitting in the back can game on the go. For starters, Nvidia is partnering with Hyundai, BYB and Polestar.

Intel’s 13th-Gen Announcements Give Us 5 Clues About Future Laptops

Welcome to CES, where Intel routinely drops a boatload of new processors. Periodically, we’ll also see some important capability upgrades to go with them as well. 2023 is one of the lower-key years, and after plowing through the details surrounding all 40-plus new choices, I’ve concluded that Intel’s latest 13th-gen announcements can be pretty much summed up in five key points.

That’s because the Core i9-13980HX, i9-13950HX, i9-13900HX and i7-13850HX — the premium CPUs intended for gaming and CPU-intensive graphics (like rendering) — have double the efficient cores (E cores) to hit a total of up to 24 cores and support faster DDR5 memory than 12th-gen offerings. The rest just have tweaks and optimizations, which allow for a gentle bump in clock speeds and battery life. For Chromebooks, the Core i3 N series updates to the latest hybrid P core/E core architecture, which means you may experience notable performance improvements in higher end Chromebooks as well.

You’ll be able to overclock with any of the HX processors, which you were previously only able to do with the HK versions. All SKUs shown support CPU, GPU, and memory overclocking. Intel’s Iris Xe integrated graphics will also be able to take advantage of a new Endurance Gaming setting, intended to extend battery life while gaming. It does this by kicking in Intel’s XeSS upscaling and capping the frame rate at 30fps, for all your desperation gaming needs.

The company highlighted laptops from the usual suspects — Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Asus and Razer — as partners for 13th-gen HX series laptops.

You’ll likely see a quick jump to 13th-gen based offerings

The new laptop CPUs and supporting chipsets can generally drop right into the existing motherboards and have the same power and cooling requirements. It’s always a faster manufacturing switchover when companies don’t need to significantly redesign the hardware.

Intel

Desktops toddle on

Intel launched its flagship 13th-gen desktop CPUs in September, leaving the mainstream, low power (for all-in-ones and other compact desktops) and inexpensive chips for CES, as it usually does. They’re not terribly interesting, since they, too tend to be variations on last year’s theme. One bright spot is that Intel’s bringing Bluetooth LE audio to desktops via motherboards which use its Killer Wireless modules.

Evo expands beyond Intel graphics

Intel’s Evo program is its marketing imprimatur for laptops which meet specific criteria that highlights all the wunnerful things you can get when you put Intel inside. These types of programs — AMD Advantage is another — usually require that the laptops incorporate all the latest and greatest hardware the sponsoring company makes. So it’s notable that Intel now allows laptops with third-party discrete graphics (in other words, Nvidia and AMD) to qualify, in addition to its own Arc graphics. Also, with noting: Of the laptops launching at CES, I don’t remember any incorporating Intel Arc discrete graphics that I heard about prior to the show.

Previously announced features will begin to roll out

The 13th-gen Core chips support the current 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 data transfer technology, as did the 12th-gen processors, but with some improvements on the laptop processors that aren’t on the desktop equivalents. First, they support DisplayPort 2.1 video for running dual 4K monitors at 60 frames per second, and second, their USB speeds are doubled to 20Gbps. (The latest version of that technology, USB 4, will reach 80Gbps and 120Gbps in some conditions when it arrives as soon as this year.)

Other features include Intel’s Unison, which lets iPhone or Android devices send and receive texts, view and transfer photos, videos and files and more with your PC or laptop. We’ll also see the Engineered for Evo compatibility program expanding to Bluetooth mice, keyboards and Wi-Fi access points, and Intel’s addition of Bluetooth LE Audio (for better, less battery sucking headphone operation) to its Killer Wireless modules. Some laptops will also start to incorporate Intel’s Movidius vision processing unit, which Windows can use for improving videoconferencing experiences.

You can expect a lot more laptop, desktop and component PC news at CES 2023, much of it built around these Intel chip announcements.

Next-gen Samsung Galaxy laptops to be launched alongside Galaxy S23

Samsung started focusing on its laptops over the past couple of years. In 2023, we expect the company to refresh its Galaxy Book laptop lineup with improved hardware specifications and better software. Now, we can confirm when the South Korean firm plans to unveil its next-generation laptops.

We can exclusively confirm that Samsung will announce its new Galaxy Book laptop lineup alongside the Galaxy S23 series during the Galaxy Unpacked 2023 event. The launch event is expected to take place in the first week of February 2023 (probably February 1). The event could be longer than usual as the company will announce multiple smartphones and laptops.

The upcoming high-end laptops will feature improved specifications. While we don’t have the exact specifications list, the upcoming Galaxy Books could bring Intel’s 13th Gen processors. Going by the previous models, the laptops could feature Super AMOLED displays. Some models could have the built-in S Pen stylus, while others could have a dedicated GPU.

As usual, we can expect Samsung to bring some additional software features to the Galaxy Book lineup for a better experience when used with Galaxy smartphones and wireless earbuds. We hope that Samsung also brings high-refresh-rate displays with its upcoming high-end laptops.

What do you want from Samsung’s next-generation laptops? Let us know in the comments section below.

The Best Dell Cyber Week Deals on Alienware Gaming PCs, Laptops, Monitors

Dell’s Cyber Monday sale continues for Cyber Week, which starts now and continues through this weekend. There are still some great deals on Alienware and Dell XPS gaming PCs, Alienware and Dell G-series gaming laptops, gaming consoles, monitors, and electronics. Of particular note, for the first time ever the 2022-2023 Alienware Aurora R15 PC with the new 13th gen Intel Raptor Lake CPU and GeForce RTX 4090 CPU is on sale with a 10% off coupon code. That brings the price down to under $4K, still out of reach for most people, but a hefty $450 discount nonetheless. Check out the deals below.

10% off $4,399.99

New for the 2022-2023 season, the Alienware Aurora R15 is the first ever Dell PC equipped with both the 13th generation Intel Raptor Lake processor and the RTX 40 series GPU. The Intel Core i9-13900KF boasts a turbo-boosted clock speed of 5.8GHz and a whopping 24 cores and 32 threads. It’s definitely more powerful than the i9 Alder Lake, and it gives AMD’s flagship AMD Ryzen 9 7950X a run for its money.

The RTX 4090 is far and away the most powerful video card you can get right now. No other GPU, either from NVIDIA or from AMD, comes close. As a reference, the RTX 4090 is about 110% faster at 4K gaming than the already impressive RTX 3080. It’s about 60% faster than the previous king, the RTX 3090 Ti. That could very well be the single biggest performance upgrade within a single generational gap for the GeForce line of cards.

Cyber Week Dell Gaming PC Deals

The Dell Cyber Week Sale includes deals on both the Alienware Aurora and Dell XPS gaming PCs. The Alienware Aurora certainly has gaming in its DNA; it’s sleek, shiny, colorful, and include more customization options and better cooling than the XPS desktops to make your ultimate tricked out gaming PC. The XPS, on the other hand, boasts a simpler, more understated design with fewer options but at an extremely reasonable price point. In terms of gaming performance, both will do the job very well.

Dell is one of the most popular brand of gaming monitors, and for good reason. Dell’s monitors generally have high quality panels with excellent image quality, have lots of features, and come with an above average warranty that often includes a bright pixel exchange policy. Dell monitors usually command a relatively high retail price tag, but aggressive discounts come by fairly often during Cyber Week.

Black Friday laptop deals live blog: the best deals on Razer gaming laptops, Dell, Microsoft, ASUS and more

Refresh

This year, as with every year, the big Black Friday laptop deals are mainly on last year’s models, and this is true for the Microsoft’s Surface Laptop series. With the release of the Surface Laptop 5 this year, we’ve see some big discounts on the 4 –º which is great, because we absolutely love the Surface Laptop 4! (check out our review on it).

It’s currently got nearly £500 off the retail price, bringing it down from £1,649  to £1,167.97 (opens in new tab). That’s the model with Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD.

Good morning! Just starting my shift on our Black Friday laptop live blog, and going through all the deals that we’re highlighting (above), there’s a couple that have jumped out at me. Gamers rejoice! It’s a nice pair of MSI lappys!

The first is the MSI Katana GF66 15.6-inch gaming laptop. Over at Walmart it’s down from $1,899 to $1,299, saving you $600 (opens in new tab)

The second is the ma-hoosive 17-inch MSI Creator Pro laptop. Over at Amazon it’s down from $2,349 to $1,399, saving $950 (opens in new tab). That’s one of the biggest savings that I’ve seen on laptops this Black Friday.

Happy Saturday laptop-hunters! It may have only been a few hours since we logged off (thank goodness for a global team), but we’re back with more actually decent deals on laptops today. Thought Black Friday was over? Think again.

We’ll kick things off by revisiting one of our favourite deals of yesterday – the record-breaking price on the Dell XPS 15 OLED 3.5K laptop – now £2,449 (was £2,799) (opens in new tab). With a Intel Core i9-12900HK processor, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050Ti 4GB and a touchscreen, there are only 8 left in stock so we fully expect this to sell out today.

We’re wrapping things up for tonight, but we’ll be back tomorrow to continue hunting out the best Black Friday laptop deals. I’ll leave you with a couple of cracking deals on the 2022 Asus ROG Strix Scar 15, which is at number 2 in our pick of the best laptops for gaming.

It has an unabashed gaming style with RGB lights galore but it’s also very powerful courtesy of the new Intel 12th Gen CPUs and the latest Nvidia RTX graphics.

In the US, Amazon has ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and Intel Core i9 12900H reduced from $1,999 to $1649.99 (opens in new tab)

In the UK, the same setup is reduced from £2,299 to £1,899.00 (opens in new tab).

There are quite a few Black Friday laptop deals about on smaller Razer gaming laptops too. I’ve not spotted a deal on the Razer Blade 17 in the US, but Amazon has some big savings on the Razer Blade 15 – now from $2,229.99 $1,999 (opens in new tab) and Razer Blade 15 with NVIDIA’s RTX 3070 Ti now from $2,599 $1,999 (opens in new tab).

Sticking with gaming laptops, let’s go to the other extreme. The Razer Blade 17 is currently at the top of our pick of the best laptops for gaming overall. So how much can we save on this awesome gaming setup during Black Friday? Actually by a massive amount in the UK. Amazon has the Razer Blade 17 Intel Core i7, NVIDIA RTX 3070, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD for £2,599.99 £1,699 (opens in new tab). Yikes! That’s a stunning Black Friday laptop deal saving £700.

We’re seeing an absolute ton of Black Friday gaming laptop deals. But gaming laptops come in all kinds of sizes and capabilities. We’ve flagged up a deal on the awesome Razer Blade 14 (opens in new tab) above, but even with that massive Black Friday deal, that’s still a pricey piece of kit. So what are the cheapest gaming laptops this Black Friday? Here are a couple of budget gems.

So, this isn’t strictly a laptop, but a lot of people like using it as one. Microsoft’s Surface Pro range of tablets was designed to take on the iPad, with the advantage of being able to run fully fledged desktop software on Windows. Add in a type-cover, and you’ve got a nifty, tactile little laptop with a gorgeous screen and a pretty decent amount of power.

We’ve seen plenty of Black Friday discounts on last year’s Surface Pro 8, but there are deals on the new Surface Pro 9 too. Amazon has $250 off several configurations. For example, the Surface Pro 9 with 16GB RAM and 256GB or SSD is now $1,599.99 $1,349 (opens in new tab).

If you’re absolutely aching for that NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics card but can’t stretch to the near-$2,000 that getting it inside a Razer Blade would cost you, we’ve got good MSI Black Friday news for you, US friends! Walmart is slashing $600 (or almost a third) off the excellent MSI Katana GF66, now $1,299 (was $1,899) (opens in new tab). It’s got that vaunted graphics card, and to back it up it’s got an Intel Core 12th Gen i9-12900H processor, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD under the bonnet (that’s British for hood), with a 15.6-inch Full HD 144Hz screen to immerse you in games (and graphic design).

Well, here’s a surprise. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 has been out for all of five minutes (well, a month), so I didn’t expect to see any discounts on it this Black Friday. How wrong I was. It’s not a huge discount, granted, but it has just dropped 6% on Amazon, where you can now get the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13.5-inch version in silver for £1,191.11, down nearly 78 quid from £1,269 (opens in new tab). This is the version with Intel EVO 12th Gen Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD, and interestingly only in Silver and Black. I really liked the 4, this laptop’s predecessor, and my colleague Ian currently has this one in for review, with early signs positive. It’s not an Earth-shattering deal, let’s be honest, but a nice little surprise nonetheless.

It’s bargain time! If all you need is a laptop to browse the internet, watch streaming and/or do general office-type work or studying, a Chromebook may be enough for you. And there are a dizzying number of Chromebook Black Friday flying around now, so sifting through which ones of these ultra-cheap laptops are actually any good can be tricky. One of the ones that’s actually decent is the Acer Chromebook 314, now only £169.99 (down from £249.99) on John Lewis (opens in new tab). That’s a cool £80 saving, almost a third, for a laptop that will do all the everyday tasks you need to do, so qualifies as an Actually Good Black Friday Chromebook Deal. The screen is a Full HD one too, so you can watch streaming services on it without it hurting your eyes (or pride) too much…

The HP Envy x360 is one of our favourite laptops this year, and certainly one of the best 2-in-1s we’ve ever tested (and here’s the review (opens in new tab) to prove it). We’re telling you this because we like you, and also because it’s now £200 off at John Lewis. You can get the HP Envy x360 for £699.99 (was £899.99) (opens in new tab), for which you get a premium convertible laptop with a Full HD touchscreen, 8GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. This is a better deal than you’ll find on Amazon right now, and the best one we’ve found for this excellent laptop.

So you want a Razer Blade but you’re not the heir to a vast fortune? I feel your pain. Razer gaming laptops are also fantastic computers for creative enthusiasts and professionals, and while most of them are, let’s face it, too expensive for most of us, you can bag what’s actually a pretty good Black Friday Razer deal on B&H right now. The Razer Blade 14 is $600 off, down to $1,999.99 from $2,599.99 (opens in new tab), and for it, you get the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti powering a 14-inch 144Hz Full HD screen, with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB PCle 4.0 SSD. It’s not the biggest screen, for if you’re a video editor, for example, but this can be remedied with a bigger second screen, because the engine behind it is formidable

I feel you, dear US readers. We’ve told you about the ASUS Vivobook earlier as a good offer for UK readers, but I’m not gonna leave you out, my American friends, because I care about you. And you can rejoice now, as I’ve spotted what we in the UK would call a proper Obie Trice (google it) deal on a good affordable Lenovo laptop at Walmart. The Lenovo Ideapad 5i is $130 off, now $369 (was $499) (opens in new tab). This Walmart offer beats Lenovo’s own by a full dollar (it all counts!) and turns a decent midrange laptop into a great budget laptop. It comes with a 14-inch Full HD screen, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD to keep things running nice and smooth for remote workers or hard-working students.

If you have ten clumsy thumbs like me, you won’t be a fan of most native laptop keyboards, so will prefer an external keyboard hooked up to your computer. And while my favourite keyboard, the Corsair K100 Air, isn’t discounted this Black Friday, the Corsair K55 RGB Pro XT, also a really good mechanical keyboard, is a big £25 off on Corsair’s website this Black Friday weekend, now £49.99 (was £74.99) (opens in new tab). This keyboard, while billed as a gaming keyboard, works really well for creative professionals and enthusiasts with its customisable keys and mechanical switches (as opposed to resistance-free membrane keyboards), and they don’t come much better than Corsair, who have a very decent range of keyboards, mice and accessories available during their Corsair Black Friday sales event (opens in new tab).

Look, we all want the big fancy expensive laptops, but we don’t all (1) have the money for one, and/or (2) actually need one. If you’re looking for a nice, affordable laptop for your general work-from-home tasks, or a student laptop that won’t fall apart midway through a lecture in two months, John Lewis is offering the midrange ASUS Vivobook 15 for budget laptop money right now, down to £369.99 (was £599.99) (opens in new tab). That’s a good 38% discount for a very reliable machine, which comes with a Full HD 15.6-inch screen, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD (which makes it work much faster than any equivalent laptop with an HDD). It’s a really good price from a very reliable laptop maker.

If you’re after a laptop that will fulfil your every day needs – surfing the web, watching movies, etc, this Dell Inspiron is a great choice. With a 15.6-inch screen, Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD and Windows 11 Home, this is nifty little machine is excellent value at its retail price of £579. And right now you can get a further £80 off this Dell Inspiron laptop at Amazon, taking it down to just £499 (opens in new tab), making it a total bargain.

We’ve told you about the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 earlier, but there’s also a generous discount on the Surface Laptop Studio on Amazon, now £1,199 (was £1,449) (opens in new tab). It’s not as big a discount as on the 4, but it’s a newer model so that’s understandable. The model on offer has an Intel Core i5 processor, 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, and this is very close to the lowest-ever price we’ve seen for it.

We’ve found a very decent discount on a very decent 2-in-1, as the Samsung Galaxy Book 2 is £400 off at Currys, now £599 (was £999) (opens in new tab). It’s got 8GB of RAM, Full HD AMOLED touchscreen and an Intel Core i5 processor, and it comes with a stylus included, so could be a good midrange option for budding designers who want a tablet and laptop all in one.

It’s beginning to look a lot like… a Razer Black Friday, actually. Razer has entered the Black Friday deals extravaganza with a vengeance, where interested US shoppers can score the Razer Blade 17 for $1,899.99, down $600 from $2,499.99 (opens in new tab). Being an ace gaming laptop, of course, it’s also a great tool for creative pros, with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card, the powerful 11th Gen Intel 8-Core i7 CPU powering a large 17.3″ FHD 360Hz screen, and supported by 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD making photo and video-editing work look easy. There’s even an SD card reader for photographers, making an external dock unnecessary. This laptop did go down to $1,699.99 very briefly in August, so we’ll let you know if the price for this one drops further.

SLIGHTLY LESS LIMITED STOCK DELL UPDATE: If you have tried and failed to get the Dell laptop of your choice on Amazon, there’s slightly more selection (and sometimes far bigger discounts) on Dell’s own site. This includes £700 off the super-powerful Dell XPS 17 (£2,698.99 now £1,998.99) (opens in new tab) at the top end, and an almost-half off the budget-friendly Dell Inspiron 15 (£329 now £189) (opens in new tab) on the other.

Now that the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is out, the Surface Laptop 4 is being given a very healthy discount. But as it’s still a very capable machine (read our review (opens in new tab) if you don’t believe me), we can definitely still recommend it. Especially now that this high-spec variant is being given over £480 off the RRP, now £1,167.97 (was £1,649) (opens in new tab). This Surface Laptop 4 comes with an Intel Core i7 chip, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, along with excellent battery life and a nice, sharp screen. This is the best price this laptop has ever been as far as we know, so if you’re in the market for a very good Surface laptop, you can celebrate Black Friday early.

Time for a LIMITED STOCK update. I know many of you are looking for Dell XPS laptops right now as they are both capable creative and gaming machines. Unfortunately, Dell doesn’t seem too well stocked in the UK at the moment, with many models sold out, but there are good offers to be had on the ones that still remain. There’s up to £350 off on Amazon right now (opens in new tab), with the biggest discount seen on the Dell XPS 15, now £2,449 (was £2,799) (opens in new tab). That’s also the best price we’ve seen this laptop go for, but there’s only 12 left in stock at the time of writing…

LIGHT THE GAMING LAPTOP BLACK FRIDAY DEAL BEACONS.
ASUS makes some good gaming laptops. One of the rather more impressive ones is the popular ASUS ROG Strix G15, which has a 300Hz Full HD screen, the lightning-fast NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 512GB SSD, all running on the battery-life-friendly Intel Core i9 12900H processor. It’s currently $200 off on Amazon US, now $1,599.99, down from $1,799.99 (opens in new tab). Like most good gaming laptops, this one is a great option for ambitious creatives, thanks to the fast graphics card and ample RAM. This is close to, but not quite, the lowest price we’ve recorded for this laptop, so we’ll be sure to let you know if this one goes any lower over the weekend.

One of the best places for early Apple Black Friday deals on Apple products this morning seems to be B&H Photo & Video (opens in new tab), where you can find MacBooks for up to $500 off. One of these offers is on the popular MacBook Air (M1, 2020), and the Gold model is $250 off right now, down to $999 (was $1,249) (opens in new tab). The MacBook Air is a sleek and powerful laptop, and I personally love the Gold one, so if you don’t mind the little extra attention you’ll get, this is a very nice deal to go for.

Dear UK readers, the skies may be grey and dull, but this early Black Friday deal from Currys is hot and shiny! ASUS Zenbooks have become one of creatives’ laptops of choice, thanks to their excellent OLED screens and outstanding processing power. And now the Zenbook Pro 14 Duo is a cool £500 off at Currys, now £1,499, down from £1,999 (opens in new tab). It’s one of our favourite pro laptops, and even though the graphics card is ‘only’ an Intel Iris Xe, it’s still a fantastic piece of kit, so if you’re in the market for a laptop with a pin-sharp 2.8K OLED screen with great colour coverage, you could do a lot worse this Black Friday.

Hi, it’s Reviews Editor Erlingur here. I’ll be accompanying you today on Creative Bloq’s Black Friday laptop deals live blog. Even though Friday hasn’t arrived yet, we’re already seeing a lot of offers live both in the UK and US, and will be doing our best to keep track of the best deals on the best laptops out there all across the weekend…

The first one will be a big get for creative professionals in the US looking for a graphic design or video-editing powerhouse, as the MSI Creator 17 is a massive $800 off, from $2,349 down to $1,549 (opens in new tab). This laptop boasts 100% AdobeRGB colour coverage, and is equipped with an Intel Core i7-11800H processor, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB NVME SSD, and has Thunderbolt 4 ports for fast data transfer, something you’ll need if you’re editing 8K HDR video. This is the lowest price we’ve ever recorded for the MSI Creator 17, so we can definitely recommend this deal.

Best Buy’s Black Friday deals: laptops, OLED TVs, and more

It’s still October, but we’re already hearing about big Black Friday deals. One of the early offenders is Best Buy, which began marking down a large batch of gadgets earlier this week on October 24th. It’ll add more price cuts once actual Black Friday comes around on the day after Thanksgiving in the US, but barring some items selling out, many of the deals you’ll find below should last through Black Friday.

A few important things to note from Best Buy’s frequently asked questions page: it isn’t offering rain checks on Black Friday deals that sell out, though its great price-matching policy will remain in effect on items until Thursday, November 17th, and won’t be in effect through Cyber Monday, which is November 28th. For items purchased between now and the end of the year, you have until January 14th to return them for a refund, which is great. And finally, you can request a price match on an item you purchased at any point within that return window if you notice Best Buy lowers its list price.
