Cameroon scores late winner against Brazil at Qatar 2022 but fails to qualify for knockout stages

CNN
 —

Soccer can be harsh sometimes, just ask Cameroon.

The Indomitable Lions became the first team to score against Brazil at Qatar 2022 on Friday, but its famous 1-0 win against the tournament favorite was still not enough to see it through to the knockout stages.

Vincent Aboubakar’s header in stoppage time may have given his nation a memorable victory, but Switzerland’s 3-2 win against Serbia in the other Group G game meant Cameroon could not progress.

The match at the Lusail Stadium had been largely uneventful for 90 minutes with both sides failing to find a breakthrough. Brazil had already booked its place in the next round and rested many of its key players.

Cameroon, meanwhile, knew it needed at least a win against the Brazilians to stand any chance of staying in the competition, but it failed to trouble its opponent until a frantic stoppage time period.

After nine minutes of added time was announced, Cameroon sensed an opportunity but, in truth, Aboubakar’s goal came completely against the run of play.

The striker’s fine header may not have helped its side into the round of 16, but it was historical nonetheless – and was celebrated by the entire Cameroon squad.

It was a goal that inflicted Brazil with its first World Cup group stage defeat since 1998.

However, soccer isn’t always kind, and Aboubakar was subsequently shown a second yellow card for taking his shirt off in celebration, meaning he was sent off the pitch before full-time.

Referee Ismail Elfath looked almost apologetic as he rained on Aboubakar’s parade, but the striker took it well, shaking the officials hand before walking down the tunnel smiling.

Despite the defeat, Brazil still progresses as the Group G winner and will face South Korea in the next round on Monday.

Neymar, who continues to nurse an ankle injury picked up in the opening match, watched on from the stands on Friday, and Brazil manager Tite will hope his captain can be fit in time for the next fixture.

Despite its dominance in possession against Cameroon, Brazil looked sloppy in front of goal and missed the bit of quality that Neymar so often produces.

“It’s a warning signal,” veteran Brazil defender Dani Alves told reporters after the match. “There is no weak rival. Here is the lesson, we need to stay switched on throughout the game. One detail and it’s over.

“We end today with the feeling that a beautiful day slipped through the hands of us players who weren’t playing much.”

Meanwhile, Switzerland finished runner-up in the group and will face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal on Tuesday after a high-scoring game against Serbia.

Despite taking the lead, the Swiss found themselves 2-1 down before mounting a stunning comeback to take victory, and second place in the group.

USMNT advances to World Cup knockout stage with hard-fought victory over Iran

CNN
 —

The US Men’s National Team (USMNT) was made to work hard for its place in the World Cup knockout stage, earning a tough 1-0 win over Iran in a nerve-racking Group B decider at Qatar 2022.

Christian Pulisic’s first-half goal was all that separated the two sides as the USMNT reached the round of 16 for the first time since 2014.

The pressure was certainly on for Gregg Berhalter’s side in Qatar after the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, but the US got the job done with three gritty group performances.

It certainly wasn’t pretty at times, in particular in the closing stages against Iran, but progressing through the group stage was the minimum expectation for this exciting young team.

There will be some concerns going into the knockout stages, though, after Pulisic suffered an abdominal injury while scoring the winner.

The USMNT will be hoping its star man, dubbed ‘Captain America’ by some, is fit for the round of 16 tie against the Netherlands on Saturday following the news that Pulisic had been sent to hospital for a scan.

This was the only the third meeting ever between the two nations and their first World Cup encounter since France 1998 – a politically charged match that saw Iran emerge as a shock 2-1 winner.

That was the first time that Iran and the US, sometimes described officially in Iran as the ‘Great Satan,’ had met on the football pitch and the biggest sporting occasion between the countries since the 1979 revolution.

The build-up to this game in Qatar has been similarly tense, with Iran even calling for the USMNT to be expelled from the World Cup after the US Soccer Federation posted an Iranian flag without the emblem of the Islamic Republic on its social media platforms to show support for protesters in Iran.

USMNT manager Berhalter and captain Tyler Adams also faced some tough questions from Iranian journalists in a fiery press conference, fending off accusations of hypocrisy and disrespect.

The furore surrounding this game only added to the drama of a matchup that – even in a vacuum away from off-field issues – was guaranteed to be fraught with tension.

Both teams knew a win would secure a place in the round of 16, but for the USMNT even a draw would not be enough to see it progress from the group.

There weren’t too many signs of early nerves from the USMNT as Berhalter’s side dictated the play in the opening stages – enjoying 65% of the possession – though it took until the 28th minute for it conjure the first chance of note.

Josh Sargeant’s long-range effort took a deflection off an Iranian defender and fell perfectly into the path of Timothy Weah, who perhaps didn’t realize he was all alone in front of goal and rushed a headed effort that Alireza Beiranvand in the Iran goal caught with ease.

On the half hour mark, Weah once again took up a brilliant position inside the box but skied his effort well over the crossbar after being set up by Sargeant.

The USMNT’s pressure eventually told seven minutes before half time, taking the lead following an incisive team move.

Weston McKennie’s pinpoint cross field ball was headed back across goal by the marauding Sergiño Dest and bundled home bravely by Pulisic, who suffered a hefty collision with Beiranvand as he turned the ball over the line.

The USMNT’s delight swiftly turned to worry as it was evident that Pulisic was in significant pain following the clash, limping heavily as he was helped off the pitch by two medics.

Pulisic soon re-entered the pitch, but the Chelsea man was clearly still struggling with the knock.

As the USMNT grew in confidence, spaces began to open up in Iran’s defense and Weah thought he’d doubled his team’s lead just before the interval, finishing wonderfully with the outside of his boot only to be met by the linesman’s flag for the narrowest of offside decisions.

Though Iran would have been happy to weather that first-half storm, it was a surprisingly subdued performance – in particular following Pulisic’s goal – from a team that had caused both England and Wales defensive problems in its opening two matches.

Iran did begin the second half with more authority, creating two brilliant chances for Saman Ghoddos but the Brentford forward was unable to trouble USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner.

With the clock ticking down, Iran had a glorious chance to level the score but Morteza Pouraliganji’s stooping header flashed narrowly wide of the far post much to the relief of the American fans in the stands, many who had their heads in their hands.

There were loud calls for a penalty from the Iranian players late on in the nine minutes of added time, with Mehdi Taremi insisting that Cameron Carter-Vickers had pulled down the Porto forward down as he attempted to get on the end of a cross.

After a brief, tense check, VAR decided it wasn’t a penalty and soon after referee Mateu Lahoz blew his whistle to end the game.

Both teams sank to the floor – for very difference reasons – but the USMNT will know an improved performance is necessary if it wants to have a chance of advancing further in Qatar.

Following the defeat, an emotional Saeid Ezatolahi asked for forgiveness from Iran fans.

Iran was in a strong position going into the final game following that crucial 2-0 win over Wales, needing just a draw to progress, but put in a disappointing performance with a place in the knockout stages on the line.

“I’m really sorry on behalf of our players, our group, that we couldn’t get our opportunity to qualify for the next round,” the midfielder said.

“Life and football is going on and that can be a good lesson for us, at least for the young players like me for the future. So I hope our fans and our people in Iran, they forgive us and I feel just sorry, that’s it.”

Iran coach Carlos Quieroz said “the dream is over” but is already looking to the future.

“The first half was US and the second half Iran,” said Quieroz, who is Iran’s longest-serving coach, having managed the team from 2011 to 2019, before returning for a second spell in charge in September.

“The difference [was] we didn’t score in the second half as we should. But, the dream is over. Now, its thinking about the next step for Iran,” added Quieroz, who is the only coach to have led the team to consecutive World Cups.

Team USA Defeats Iran, Advances To Knockout Round Of 2022 FIFA World Cup

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Christian Pulisic gave his body for his country, scoring the goal that advanced the United States in the World Cup while crashing into the goalkeeper.

Pulisic’s 38th-minute goal lifted the U.S. over Iran 1-0 on Tuesday in a politically charged rematch of their famous meeting a quarter-century ago. The American star was replaced at the start of the second half and taken to a hospital for an abdominal scan, the U.S. Soccer Federation said.

Pulisic scored and was sprawled on the field and lying in the goal for about three minutes as he received treatment from the U.S. staff. He tried to continue playing but was substituted and later taken to the hospital.

Back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament, the U.S. opened with draws against Wales and England and needed a victory to reach the round of 16.

The Americans finished second in Group B with five points, two behind England, and will play the Netherlands on Saturday with the chance to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.

“I always say it’s us against the world,” forward Tim Weah said. “No one believed the U.S. could play good football.”

Iran finished third with three points. The team has failed to advance in all six of its World Cup appearances.

“The dream is over with this result,” Iran coach Carlos Queiroz said. “The U.S. started the game much better than us, more quick with better control of the game.”

There was heightened tension surrounding the match because of the strained relations between the United States and Iran’s Islamic government. Iran had famously upset the U.S. 2-1 in the 1998 tournament in France, eliminating the Americans.

Pregame protocols were normal, unlike the 1998 game, when Iranians presented the Americans with white flowers and the teams posed for a joint photo.

Raucous Iranian fans with horns and drums in the crowd of 42,127 filled the lower bowl behind one goal at Al Thumama Stadium and were far louder than the red-white-and-blue U.S. supporters at the other end and behind the American bench.

The U.S. outshot Iran 9-0 in the first half but didn’t break through until Pulisic came up with the big moment that a growing and increasingly demanding fan base back home had been pining for.

Weston McKennie lofted a pass from just past the center circle to Sergiño Dest at the edge of the 6-yard box. Dest headed the ball in front of the net on a bounce as Pulisic charged up the center of the field past Ramin Rezaeian and Majid Hosseiniand.

Turning his body to let the ball hit his right foot, Pulisic knocked the ball for his 22nd international goal and first in World Cup play. His momemtum carried him into goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, and Pulisic needed to be helped to his feet before going back in.

“Obviously we’re very thankful that he threw his body there,” McKennie said. “At the end it was a heart-drop sinking moment, but we got it done and we’re excited to still be here.”

Weah, who scored the Americans’ goal in the opening 1-1 draw with Wales, nearly doubled the lead in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time but was ruled offside.

Brenden Aaronson replaced Pulisic at the start of the second half.

With England ahead of Wales, Iran knew if needed only a draw to advance and finally got its first shot at goalkeeper Matt Turner when Saman Ghoddos put a header over the crossbar in the 52nd minute. Saeid Ezatolahi put an open shot high and wide in the 70th and Morteza Pouraliganji’s diving header in the third minute of nine minutes of stoppage time went just wide and Walker Zimmerman cleared a loose ball in front of the open net in the ninth minute after Cameron Carter-Vickers got a slight hand on Mehdi Taremi.

“I hope that our fans and our people in Iran forgive us. I am just sorry,” Taremi said.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, a son of former NBA player Howard Carter, made his World Cup debut in place of Zimmerman and gave the U.S. an entirely Europe-based lineup for the first time ever in World Cup play.

The U.S. lineup averaged 24 years, 321 days, the youngest of any team at the tournament thus far and the youngest in the World Cup for the Americans since 1990. Yunus Musah turned 20, the first American to appear in a World Cup match on his birthday.

The U.S. is 1-4 against the Netherlands, all friendlies, overcoming a two-goal deficit to win 4-3 at Amsterdam in 2015.

LIV Golf’s season-ending team championship includes match-play head-to-head knockout playoff and $50 million purse

Golfers will compete for $50 million, the richest purse in the sport’s history, in LIV Golf’s season-ending team championship, which is scheduled to be played at Trump National Doral Miami from Oct. 27-30.

Twelve four-man teams will compete for a $16 million first-place prize. The teams will be seeded one through 12. The top four seeds will receive a bye to the quarterfinals. The other eight will compete in qualifying rounds.

How will the seeding be determined? By a closest-to-the-pin shootout by the team captains, which will take place immediately after players are drafted.

That was the format for how the team championship will work in LIV Golf’s rules and regulations, which were released by a U.S. District Court in California on Monday as part of its federal antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour.

“The Team Series Championship will be played over four days as a match-play head-to-head knock-out playoff, with the winning Team crowned as the ‘Team Series Champion,'” section 5.4 of the rules and regulations states. “Each team will be ranked and seeded one (1) through twelve (12) for competition in the Team Series Championship based on a shootout undertaken immediately following the Player Draft preceding the Team Series Championship, with each Team Captain having one (1) shot to hit toward a target in a ‘nearest the pin’-style shootout.”

According to the section, “[T]he Team whose Team Captain’s shot finishes closest to the target will be designated as the first (1st) seed and each remaining Team will be seeded based on the proximity to the target of each other Team Captain’s shot.”

A LIV Golf spokesperson told ESPN on Tuesday that details of the team championship were still being finalized and would be released in the future.

“It’s very unsurprising that they would pick something so tacky and unoriginal to try and expand the game,” a longtime PGA Tour player told ESPN on Tuesday. “It’s f—ing lame is what it is. It’s lame as s—. It’s XFL. It’s AND1 Mixtape Tour. It’s not competitive golf. It’s a circus.”

In the qualifying rounds, according to the document, the fifth-seeded team will have the first choice in picking its opponent, with the second-seeded team following with its pick and then the third and fourth. Losing teams will be eliminated after each round.

The team matches will consist of two individual match-play contests and one pairs match-play contest. Each match is worth one point. Ties will be broken by a sudden-death playoff, with the captains picking two players to compete.

The four players on the second-place team will split $10 million, third gets $8 million and fourth takes home $4 million. Teams that finish fifth through eighth will win $2 million each, and teams that are ninth through 12th get $1 million each.

“It’s not competitive,” the PGA Tour player said. “The real competitive golfers, the guys who play on the PGA Tour and compete in majors, it’s why they’re just not interested in this nonsense.”

LIV Golf CEO and commissioner Greg Norman will grant as many as 12 exemptions to players to compete in the team championship. The next 24 participants will be determined by the leading players in the individual rankings who competed in at least four regular-season tournaments, and the remaining 12 places will go to the highest ranked players in the Official World Golf Ranking on Oct. 17, provided they have participated in at least three LIV Golf events.

Ryan Garcia vs. Javier Fortuna fight results, highlights: ‘King Ry’ scores sixth-round knockout

Javier Fortuna promised that when he stepped into the ring with Ryan Garcia, he’d prove Garcia was overrated. Unfortunately for Fortuna, his predictive powers were lacking as Garcia dominated the fight from the opening seconds before scoring a sixth-round knockout to the delight of the crowd inside Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Fortuna (37-4-1, 26 KO) never managed to get anything going offensively in the fight, struggling to deal with Garcia’s length as the 23-year-old worked behind a stiff jab and long straight right hands.

The patient long-range attack of Garcia (23-0, 19 KO) paid off in big ways as Fortuna’s guard steadily came up, exposing his ribs. Garcia took advantage of that in the fourth round, landing a crushing left hook to the body that sent Fortuna reeling before he took a knee for the first knockdown of the fight.

Things didn’t get better for Fortuna in the fifth round as Garcia’s left hand moved from the body back to the head. One of those left hooks caught Fortuna flush, sending Fortuna to the canvas for the second time in the fight, with the Dominican veteran wincing badly as he hit the deck.

The third and final knockdown of the fight came just moments into the sixth round as Garcia unloaded a three-punch combination that finished with another left hook and sent Fortuna to the canvas once again. This time, Fortuna did not rise and Garcia was awarded the knockout at the 0:27 mark of the round.

Despite both fighters normally campaigning at lightweight, the fight was contested at super lightweight at the request of the Fortuna camp. After the fight, Garcia made it clear that he was so comfortable at the weight that he would not be returning to the lightweight division.

Even with what he claims is a permanent move up in weight, Garcia remains focused on a massive fight with one of lightweight’s other young stars in Gervonta “Tank” Davis for his next outing.

“100 percent, I felt way better,” Garcia said. “I’m not going back to 135 for nothing but I will fight ‘Tank’ next. If ‘Tank’ wants it at 140. Hey, I’m going to record all the negotiations so that you guys don’t make no headlines saying I’m ducking. If he wants it, let’s get it. … That’s going to give me the respect I deserve. I’m never afraid. I’ve said I have a spirit of competition in me. You’re going to see that come out when I fight tank and whoop his ass.”

Garcia and Davis have long talked up a potential fight while sharing the lightweight division along with other young stars like Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez, another fighter who has recently moved to the 140-pound division.

While Davis has ventured to the super lightweight division to win the WBA’s secondary title with a dramatic win over Mario Barrios, it’s unknown if he would be willing to return to the weight given he is only five-foot-five. The fight also hinges on various promoters and networks being able to work out a deal that is fit for all involved.

Impact’s newest Knockout likes the smell of dirty motels

Impact revealed the latest addition to the Knockouts division with an odd vignette. The person in question declared that the smell of a dirty motel comforts her. The footage also included a dead rat and possibly some OnlyFans kink.

Killer Kelly is coming soon to Impact.

The vignette opened with a lone stranger walking the streets. She likes to roam alone and stay in dirty motels. It comforts her as a reminder of that place. The musical tone changed inside her motel room. It’s only after we lose everything that we are free to do anything. Killer Kelly removed her clothes to bathe in the shower.

That was certainly a weird introduction to Killer Kelly, but I must say that I am intrigued. That makes it effective to an extent. I’m curious how the smell of dirty motels can be transformed into a gimmick. It was enough on the bizarre side that it made me question if she was filming a kink video.

Killer Kelly has wrestled in Impact previously in a handful of losing efforts during 2020. Prior to that, she competed in the 2018 Mae Young Classic tournament for NXT. Kelly tasted defeat against Meiko Satomura in the first round.

What’s your take on the Impact vignette for Killer Kelly? Do you also enjoy the smell of dirty motels?

Anthony Rizzo delivers Yankees’ ‘knockout blow’ again

TORONTO — On Thursday night, Anthony Rizzo homered to end the game.

On Friday night, he effectively did the same — in the fifth inning.

Rizzo crushed a grand slam to cap off an eight-run frame as the Yankees ran away with a 12-3 win over the Blue Jays in the series opener at Rogers Centre.

After his walk-off homer Thursday gave the Yankees a 2-1 win over the Rays, Rizzo left no doubt with his round-tripper against the Blue Jays, clobbering it an estimated 435 feet to the facing above the second deck in right field. That gave the Yankees a 10-1 lead in the fifth inning, all but putting their eighth straight win on ice.

“That’s kind of the knockout blow right there,” manager Aaron Boone said.

It was Rizzo’s sixth home run in his past 13 games as he continued to mash the ball in June. He drilled nine home runs in his first 20 games, then hit just two over his next 30 games before his latest hot streak.

Rizzo, who went 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch and walk on the night, has also been hitting the ball well lately, even when he is not homering. Over his past 14 games, he is batting .291 (16-for-55) with a .989 OPS and 18 RBI.

“Just ebbs and flows of the season,” said Rizzo, who is also 8-for-14 with runners in scoring position during that stretch. “Just working through kinks and always trying to find the right position to be in. … When I get hit by pitches, I feel like it really locks me in more, just staying on the ball.”

Sure enough, Rizzo was hit by a pitch on the left thigh to lead off the decisive fifth inning Friday.

Later in the frame, the Blue Jays intentionally walked Aaron Judge to load the bases with one out for Josh Donaldson, who struck out. But Rizzo didn’t let them off the hook, obliterating a hanging curveball from Trevor Richards for his sixth career grand slam and the Yankees’ third home run of the inning.

Anthony Rizzo delivered an emphatic homer for the second straight night.

“Bases loaded, they walk Judgey and just to be able to come through there — our MVP getting walked, we all just want to make them pay, at all times, when anyone gets intentionally walked,” Rizzo said. “But the year [Judge] is having, we just want to always have his back. The grand slam’s the best way you can do it.

After seeing Rizzo scuffle in May with a .167/.268/.313 slash line, Boone is glad to have him back in a groove.

“It’s been good, because he was grinding there for that month,” Boone said. “He was still having some big at-bats, but he was grinding through it. It’s nice to see him, over the last week or 10 days, really start to — the quality of his contact is getting really good now.”

Warriors absorb power punch from Luka Doncic, Mavs in Game 2, setting stage for Stephen Curry’s knockout blow

SAN FRANCISCO — You could see it coming before Game 2 even started. Shoot, you could see it coming before Game 1 even ended. The Dallas Mavericks were blown off the court in the first game of the Western Conference finals on Wednesday, and you knew they would come out on Friday against the Golden State Warriors with a renewed focus, a better shooting touch and a vengeful, dangerous Luka Doncic.

“I’ve seen it for my entire time in the NBA, player, executive, coach. Game 2 of a playoff series is always very different based on the outcome of Game 1,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said before Game 2. “We have to maintain our edge tonight, and we’ve got to really come out and be ready for the force that they’re undoubtedly going to bring.”

Ready for the force, the Warriors were not.

Just seven minutes into the game, the Mavericks had raced out to a 26-10 lead in front of a hushed Chase Center crowd. Doncic had already scored 12 points and Dallas had sunk five 3-pointers, fulfilling the promise of a bounce-back shooting night that so many expected. Meanwhile the Warriors, despite knowing what was coming, looked stunned, flustered and frustrated. They turned the ball over 10 times in the first half while allowing a stunning 15 3-pointers and 72 points to the Mavericks.

Draymond Green played one of the worst halves of his playoff career, picking up a technical and finding himself in foul trouble along the way. Klay Thompson only had six points and mustered only two 3-point attempts by halftime. Stephen Curry was the only one who could get anything going, scoring 20 first-half points on 5-of-7 3-point shooting as the Warriors trailed by 14.

It was all coming to fruition. The probable had become the inevitable.

So when you see the final score, a 126-117 Warriors win to take a 2-0 lead in the series, it tells the tale of a team that absorbed a shiver-inducing body blow and got back up off the mat. Not only to survive, but to dominate.

“I thought we were so scattered in the first half. Maybe emotionally more than anything,” Kerr said after Game 2. “Dallas came out and just punched us. … So we just needed to get poised and get the game under control.”

We’re used to seeing third-quarter Warriors barrages, but it’s usually characterized by the offense. They put up a respectable 25 points in the third on Friday, but they only allowed just 13 points to the Mavs, which shaved 12 points off the halftime deficit.

“We just didn’t communicate well enough on the pick-and-roll [in the first half]. They were able to get out and hit some shots. They were able to find some shooters,” Warriors forward Otto Porter Jr. said after the game. “We got a little bit closer to them in the second half, made it tough for them. We just played harder.”

When the fourth quarter rolled around, that’s when the offensive assault began, and a fresh face was leading the charge. With Curry resting, Jordan Poole — who’s had an up-and-down postseason after a fantastic beginning — was absolutely masterful, scoring 12 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter. He also set up his teammates, including an absolute dime to Kevon Looney, who scored over 20 points in a game for the first time since his freshman year at UCLA.

“When Steph comes off the floor, the defense tends to focus on me a little bit more,” Poole said after the game. “So continue to be aggressive, and not only try to make plays for my teammates but try to look for more shots and just keep our rhythm going.”

By the time Poole subbed out with just over six minutes left in the game, the Warriors had turned a two-point deficit into a seven-point lead. From then on, the heroics were left to a much more familiar face of the Warriors dynasty — Wardell Stephen Curry.

Curry checked in at the 6:24 mark of the fourth quarter and proceeded to score 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting. With Doncic menacingly lingering on the other side, Curry made sure that any potential Mavericks comeback was squashed before it started. He finished with 32 point on the night, going 6 of 10 from 3-point range.

“There’s a reason that our team has won championships, and it’s that we’ve got players who are stars and players who are fearless and capable of playing and performing under pressure,” Kerr said after the game. “But Steph in particular, the guy is one of the great players of all time. This is what the greats do.”

Fittingly, it was Curry’s long 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with just over a minute left that sealed the victory, and allowed him to hit the Mavericks with his latest signature “night-night” celebration.

It’s become cliche to cite the Warriors’ championship pedigree — kind of like alluding to “Heat culture” — but it’s hard to deny when you witness performances like this. This was the 12th Warriors postseason comeback win after being down by at least 15 points since Kerr took over as head coach in 2014-15. Part of that is due to the highly explosive offense they’ve consistently put forth, but you don’t come back from that much, that often, without incredible resiliency, confidence and teamwork.

That’s what allows you to take an overhand right to the chin from a scrappy team with one of the best players in the NBA, then get up off the canvas to deliver the knockout blow — once again.

“For us, the experience, just the chemistry — obviously this group is different — but we have that attitude, the spirit that we feel like we’re never out of it,” Curry said after the Game 2 win. “That belief then turns into execution in the game, and you can feel the momentum. It’s more just focused on what we do. When we have those opportunities to stick the dagger or come up with three stops in a row, those are the times where we feel the good energy going our way.”

UFC 274 results, highlights: Michael Chandler delivers Knockout of the Year contender over Tony Ferguson

Getty Images

For one round at UFC 274, it appeared Tony Ferguson was finally ready to get back in the win column, showcasing some of his classic speed and power in the striking game. Then, seconds into Round 2, Ferguson was struck with one of the most violent knockouts in UFC history as Michael Chandler’s foot crashed into his chin, ending the lightweight fight in an instant.

Ferguson opened up the fight with some explosive strikes, stepping in with straight punches to counter the wild attack of Chandler. The clean striking had Chandler rocked twice and forced him to explode through a double-leg takedown to put the fight on the floor and slow things down. Ferguson was aggressive off his back, throwing elbows and punches as Chandler attempted to do the same from top position. The result of the two-way ground assault was both men heading back to their corners cut and bloodied.

In the second round, Chandler wasted absolutely no time before closing the show. As Ferguson stepped in, Chandler threw a front kick that landed clean to Ferguson’s chin, sending Ferguson to the canvas unconscious.

Ferguson remained motionless for several minutes, finally regaining consciousness and sitting on a stool before being able to stand in the center of the Octagon as Chandler’s hand was raised.

The win was an important one for Chandler, who had suffered losses to Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje in his two previous fights.

“We didn’t even train that that much,” Chandler said of the knockout. “It just kind of happened. He’s so long and leaves his hands wide and left a lane we wanted to throw an uppercut through.”

After his victory, Chandler called out Justin Gaethje for a rematch of their thrilling war before also issuing a callout to UFC superstar Conor McGregor for a clash at welterweight.
