Chicago Bears RB David Montgomery has sprained knee, expected to miss 4-5 weeks

Chicago Bears starting running back David Montgomery has a sprained left knee that is expected to keep him out of action for four to five weeks, a source told ESPN’s Dan Graziano.

Montgomery, 24, injured his knee on a short 5-yard run in the fourth quarter of the Bears’ 24-14 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He had stayed on the ground, clutching his knee, and had to be helped off the field. He did not return to the game.

Prior to the injury, Montgomery had 106 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and he leads the Bears with 309 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Damien Williams has been Montgomery’s primary backup this season and figures to serve as Chicago’s lead running back, if healthy, while Montgomery is sidelined.

Williams, 29, also suffered a thigh bruise this past Sunday against the Lions, and Bears coach Matt Nagy expects to have an update on the veteran running back’s status as early as Wednesday.

ESPN’s Jeff Dickerson contributed to this report.

Minnesota Vikings TE Irv Smith Jr. to have knee surgery this week

EAGAN, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. will undergo surgery this week to repair a meniscus injury he suffered in Minnesota’s preseason finale at Kansas City, coach Mike Zimmer announced Monday.

“We’ll see how that surgery goes, but [Vikings head team physician] Dr. [Christopher] Larsen is one of the best in the country so we expect a good turnout.”

Zimmer did not specify how long the Vikings will be without Smith, but said he had not heard about a “six-to-eight month” timetable when specifically asked about a longer time frame for Smith’s recovery.

“We’ll just see where he’s at,” Zimmer said “A lot of times you can’t really tell anything until you get in there. We really won’t know until they get in there.”

Typically, recovery from meniscus surgery could range from several weeks to several months depending on whether it’s a simpler debridement or clean-up procedure, or a full repair.

Smith played 11 snaps during Friday’s loss at Kansas City, though it’s not apparent when he suffered his injury during the game. The third-year tight end was interviewed on the field during the television broadcast and was made available to the media on hand at Arrowhead Stadium following the game.

Minnesota is down to Tyler Conklin, Brandon Dillon, Zach Davidson and Shane Zylstra at tight end and several of those players are not expected to make the 53-man roster. Zimmer called the Vikings’ tight end depth “not very good” and said the team would be looking to add another tight end with cutdown day on the horizon.

“We’re looking, but not just at tight end,” Zimmer said. “We’re looking [at] all positions.”

The Vikings had two tight ends on the field for 445 snaps in 2020, which ranked third in the NFL. Even though Minnesota’s offense is typically predicated on its tight end usage, the Vikings may have to make schematic adjustments based on their depleted personnel at the position.

“We may end up being a little bit more ‘three wides’ [receivers],” Zimmer said. “With some of the guys that we have there. All this will shake out after the cuts. We can’t jump ahead of anything right now.”

Conklin, who has been rehabbing from a hamstring injury and has not practiced since Aug. 16, is expected to be back as a full participant in practice on Monday, according to Zimmer.

Roger Federer will miss US Open after announcing further knee surgery

“I’ve been doing a lot of checks with the doctors, as well, on my knee, getting all the information as I hurt myself further during the grass-court season and Wimbledon,” the 40-year-old said in an Instagram post Sunday.

“Unfortunately, they told me for the medium to long-term, to feel better, I will need surgery, so I decided to do it. I will be on crutches for many weeks and then also out of the game for many months.”

Federer, who is tied with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on 20 career grand slams, was noncommittal about his future in tennis.

“I want to be healthy. I want to be running around later, as well, again, and I want to give myself a glimmer of hope, also, to return to the tour in some shape or form,” he added.

“I am realistic, don’t get me wrong. I know how difficult it is at this age right now to do another surgery and try it.”

Federer missed more than a year of action after having two operations on his knee after the Australian Open in 2020.

He returned for the 2021 French Open but withdrew after his third-round win to protect his knee. Federer then lost in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in June.

After his Wimbledon loss, he withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics after announcing an injury setback with his knee.

This year’s US Open is scheduled to start on August 30 and runs through September 12 in New York.

Giannis Antetokounmpo knee injury: Bucks taking it ‘day-to-day’ with injured star ahead of NBA Finals

The Milwaukee Bucks held on for a Game 6 win over the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference finals on Saturday night, and have now advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1974. There, they’ll face the Phoenix Suns, with Game 1 set for Tuesday night.

Whether Giannis Antetokounmpo will be on the court for that game, or any part of the series for that matter, is still unclear. The two-time MVP suffered a hyperextended left knee in Game 4 against the Hawks, and though he avoided any structural damage, he hasn’t played since.

Following the series-clinching win over the Hawks, coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters it’s a “day-to-day” situation. His full quote:

“I mean, [Giannis] and the sports performance team, they have been together a long time. It’s special to watch their relationship. It’s special to watch the communication, the trust that he has. You have to listen to the player and then you have to listen to the sports performance group, and at some point Jon Horst and myself are part of the conversations, but it’s just a day-to-day thing. We’ll update it when appropriate. The conversations between he and myself and he and the sports performance group, it’s kind of private and we’ll see where he is each day.

Earlier in the week, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reported that there was optimism Giannis would have been given the “green light” to play in Game 7 against the Hawks if the series had gotten that far. If true, that bodes well for the Bucks considering there’s even more time off until Game 1 of the Finals.

The injury occurred in the third quarter of Game 4, when Giannis went up to block an alley-oop attempt by Clint Capela and landed awkwardly on his left leg. He remained down on the court for several moments after the fall, before being helped off the court by his brother, Thanasis, and the medical staff. After a brief return to the Bucks’ bench during the third quarter, he eventually made his way back to the locker room and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

You can see the play where the injury occurred below:

The Bucks proved in Games 5 and 6 against the Hawks that they’re still a formidable team even without their best player. But as they prepare for their first Finals appearance in nearly 50 years, there’s no question they’d prefer to do so with Giannis on the court.

Giannis Antetokounmpo injury update: Bucks star out for Game 5 vs. Hawks with knee injury

USATSI

Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo left Game 4 against the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night after suffering a hyperextended left knee during the third quarter of the contest. The injury occurred when Antetokounmpo went up to block an alley-oop attempt by Clint Capela, and the two-time MVP landed hard on his left leg and injured his knee in the process. Although an MRI confirmed he suffered no structural damage to his left knee and his ligaments remain intact, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Bucks announced Antetokounmpo will be out for Game 5.

Antetokounmpo was down on the court for several moments after the fall, and he was eventually helped back to Milwaukee’s locker room. He returned to the Bucks’ bench briefly during the third quarter, but he headed back to the locker room again after a few moments. He was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game due to a left knee hyperextension.

You can see the play where the injury occurred below:

Before exiting the game, Antetokounmpo had 14 points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes of action. However, once he went down, the Hawks quickly pulled away from the Bucks to even the series up at two games apiece.

While the Bucks can take solace in knowing that Antetokoumpo’s injury isn’t as severe as some may have originally thought, not having him on the floor for Game 5 is a significant blow.

Aljamain Sterling wins UFC bantamweight title after Petr Yan disqualified for illegal knee

LAS VEGAS — Aljamain Sterling unhooked the UFC belt from around his waist and let it fall to the Octagon mat with a thud. Sterling then got on his knees and put his head to the canvas.

It was not the behavior of someone who had just achieved a longtime dream of becoming UFC champion. But those were the extremely bizarre circumstances of Saturday’s UFC bantamweight title fight at UFC 259.

Sterling won the title by disqualification at 4 minutes, 29 seconds of the fourth round after Petr Yan landed an illegal knee to Sterling’s head. The ringside physician determined that Sterling, who was visibly rocked by the knee, could not fight on. Referee Mark Smith ruled the foul intentional, making the result a disqualification.

Sterling was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons, according to the UFC.

“Everything I worked for to this point, and to have the fight go like that,” Sterling said. “I thought the fight was very close; I thought I was down two rounds. That’s not the way I wanted to win. That’s not the way I envisioned this. I just took the belt off.

“I was trying to continue even being like that. I was in a bad shape, and it would just have been ego taking over and just to get further punishment. The ref told me I was down. I don’t know. I understand that there is some heat, some bad blood a little bit, but it’s all rivalry.”

Yan took to Twitter afterward, apologizing and wishing a “speedy recovery” to Sterling.

“I didn’t mean to throw an illegal strike,” Yan wrote. “I just made a big mistake and paid for it.”

What made the ending even stranger is that Yan was in full control of the bout. He was beginning to pick Sterling apart in the third and fourth rounds with technical boxing. Sterling, who worked hard to push the pace and make Yan uncomfortable, seemed to be running out of steam with Yan coming on in the late rounds.

Sterling had a strong start to the fight. He landed two hard jumping knees to Yan’s head in the first round. Yan rallied late in the first by dropping Sterling with a left hand.

Sterling continued applying pressure in the second, but Yan was mostly nonplussed. He stuffed just about all of Sterling’s takedown attempts and was proficient in the clinch.

Yan landed some hard left and right hands in the fourth round, leading to the odd finish.

“I think there’s a lot of fatigue, frustration. It was a good fight,” UFC president Dana White said. “But the thing is, [Yan] was turning it on. He was starting to win the fight. He was starting to absolutely take control of that fight. … Why you throw that knee, I couldn’t tell you.”

The judges had Yan ahead 29-28, 29-28, 28-29 going into the fourth, a round Yan was convincingly winning before the illegal knee.

Sterling actually had a 97-86 edge in significant strikes at the time of the stoppage.

“I wanted to continue,” Sterling said. “The fight was fast-paced; it was a lot of action. I know the fans were enjoying that. This was potentially going to be one of the fights of the year or one of the greatest bantamweight fights in history for the title. The action was nonstop until that point.

“Sorry, fans. Sorry that the fight went like this. I hope we get to run it back, do it again and give you the fight you guys deserve.”

White, when asked about Yan and Sterling potentially running it back, said, “They both want the rematch. We’ve gotta do the rematch. We’ve just gotta figure out when.”

Yan and Sterling came in ranked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s MMA bantamweight rankings.

UFC 259 took place with COVID-19 protocols in effect at the UFC Apex, a facility across from the UFC’s corporate campus.

Sterling (20-3) has now won six straight fights. The New York native, who had his training camp at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, was coming off a first-round submission win over Cory Sandhagen at UFC 250 in June. Sterling, 31, has a 12-3 UFC record.

Yan (15-2) won the vacant UFC bantamweight title by beating Jose Aldo at UFC 251 in July. The Russia native had won 10 in a row coming in, including his first seven in the UFC. Yan, 28, typically trains out of Tiger Muay Thai in Thailand, but he moved his camp to American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, this time due to coronavirus-related travel inconveniences.

Jarred Kelenic To Miss Time After Suffering Knee Strain

1:44PM: Kelenic suffered a Grade 2 strain, Divish reports, which usually carries a recovery period of three-to-six weeks.

1:21PM: Mariners prospect Jarred Kelenic will be out of action after an MRI revealed a strain in his left adductor muscle, the team announced.  Kelenic suffered the injury during Friday’s game against the White Sox.

No mention was made of a recovery timeline, apart from GM Jerry Dipoto saying “we are relieved that the long-term outlook is positive.  We all look forward to seeing him back on the field in the near future.”  Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times estimated that Kelenic is likely to miss “a few weeks” of time, which would rule out any chance of Kelenic making the Opening Day roster.  Kelenic has yet to play any Triple-A ball in his brief pro career, and it now seems as if he will indeed begin his 2021 season with Triple-A Tacoma.

Kelenic’s MLB debut date has been the subject of controversy in recent days, stemming from the infamous comments made by now-former Mariners president/CEO Kevin Mather during a video speech to the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club in February.  Mather openly discussed how the M’s had no intention of calling up any of its top young prospects from the alternate training site last season, and hinted that the team was planning to keep Kelenic and Logan Gilbert in Triple-A long enough this year for the Mariners to gain an extra year of team control over their services.  Kelenic and his agent later commented that he would have made his Seattle debut in 2020 had Kelenic accepted a long-term contract extension that would have given the M’s even more team control over Kelenic’s future.

A consensus pick as one of baseball’s top 10 prospects, the 21-year-old Kelenic was the Mets’ choice as the sixth overall pick of the 2018 draft, and the centerpiece of the Mariners’ return in the blockbuster deal that sent Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz from Seattle to New York in December 2018.  The trade already looms as a pivotal moment in Mariners history, and it will become even more impactful should Kelenic and Justin Dunn live up to lofty expectations.

Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker will miss Sunday’s All-Star festivities due to a left knee sprain, the league announced on Friday.

He sustained the injury in Thursday night’s 120-98 win over the Golden State Warriors.

The team said in a press release that he is considered day-to-day and will be re-evaluated following the All-Star break.

Booker had previously been chosen by commissioner Adam Silver as a replacement for injured Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis.

The former Kentucky Wildcat was selected No. 3 overall by Team KD captain Kevin Durant in Thursday night’s NBA All-Star Draft.

Booker was also slated to participate in his fifth three-point contest, which he came out as the victor of in the 2018 edition.

Utah Jazz guard Mike Conley Jr. will replace Booker in both the All-Star Game and three-point contest on Sunday night in Atlanta.

The selection will be the first of Conley’s 14-year career.

Source — Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady to have minor knee surgery during offseason

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady will undergo a minor surgical procedure on his knee this offseason, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The upcoming surgery was first reported by the Tampa Bay Times.

A source close to the situation told ESPN that this was not a recent injury and that Brady, who led the Bucs to a victory this past Sunday in Super Bowl LV, had been planning the procedure for months.

Brady was not listed on the Bucs’ injury report all season. He was listed on the report as “not injury related” when he was given a handful of off days by coach Bruce Arians, something the Bucs also did with Rob Gronkowski, Ndamukong Suh and other veteran players.

Brady wore a brace on his left knee Wednesday during the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl boat parade. But wearing the brace is not uncommon for the 43-year-old Brady, who also wears it when golfing and during other recreational activities.

Brady was named Super Bowl MVP for the fifth time in his career Sunday after passing for 201 yards and three touchdowns in Tampa Bay’s 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

With the win, Brady has more Super Bowl titles (seven) than any franchise in NFL history, topping the six each won by the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots. Brady also became the only player with five Super Bowl MVPs; Joe Montana is second all time with three.

Eric Paschall out vs. Mavs with knee soreness for depleted Warriors

The Warriors might enter Thursday night’s game vs. the Dallas Mavericks even more depleted in the frontcourt than expected.

Eric Paschall will not play due to right knee soreness after initially appearing on the morning injury report as “questionable.”

Paschall had been questionable with this designation a couple times this season, but had not yet missed a game because of it.

With Kevon Looney (sprained left ankle) and James Wiseman (sprained left wrist) already ruled out, the expectation is that Juan Toscano-Anderson will start at power forward and receive a boost in playing time, with Draymond Green playing all of his minutes at center.

Steve Kerr and the coaching staff also could go very small by inserting Damion Lee, Kent Bazemore or Brad Wanamaker into the game for longer stretches.

After Thursday’s matchup, the Warriors and Mavs will face off again Saturday night.
