Steve Kerr previews rotation changes as Warriors drop to 0-6 on road

NEW ORLEANS — The Golden State Warriors wrapped up a winless five-game road trip Friday night at New Orleans, falling to the Pelicans 114-105.

The Warriors have dropped all six of their road games, the first time they’ve done so since the 1997-98 season. They are the first defending champion to start 0-6 on the road in NBA history, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. And their overall record of 3-7 marks the fifth time a defending champion has started a season with that record or worse.

Following his team’s loss to the Orlando Magic one night prior, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he was planning on switching up his rotation, as the bench minutes have been one of the bigger problem areas for Golden State. He doubled down on that following Friday’s loss.

“We’re going to change up our rotations a little bit. And I have an idea of what I want to do,” Kerr said. “The staff will talk about it the next couple of days and solidify that.”

With Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green all out against the Pelicans due to injury management, Kerr was forced to rely on his younger players while also getting an opportunity to experiment with different combinations and lineups.

He started Moses Moody alongside regular starter Kevon Looney, sixth man Jordan Poole and two-way player Anthony Lamb. Jonathan Kuminga rounded out the starting five despite playing in only two of Golden State’s previous five games.

Kuminga’s night — 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and one block in a career-high 38 minutes — was strong enough for Kerr to mention him by name when reiterating his plan to adjust the rotation moving forward when all of the starters are active.

“It was apparent who really played tonight. [Kuminga] played really well,” Kerr said. “He’s earned some minutes … He showed tonight that he’s ready to step into the rotation and contribute. But that has to be every night … be able to play through the tough nights when maybe the minutes aren’t there.”

Kerr previously said that Kuminga hasn’t been happy with his lack of playing time, and Friday Kuminga said that it has been challenging.

But now that he’s gotten a chance to remind Kerr and the coaches what he adds to the team, he is prepared to take advantage.

“[I’m] working hard every single day to make sure I build everything on my game,” Kuminga said. “It’s not perfect, but knowing that I’ve given everything on the floor, I’m just going to keep building … I’m harder on myself than anybody.”

Kerr also mentioned Lamb, Moody and Ty Jerome as players who impressed against the Pelicans and could possibly see more minutes.

Steve Kerr Wanted Warriors to Win Championship for Stephen Curry

  • Steve Kerr and Andre Iguodala kept saying the Warriors had to win the championship “for” Steph Curry.
  • Kerr praised Curry’s humility and leadership, calling him “the reason” for the Warriors’ success.
  • Curry was emotional after a dominant Finals that earned him his first Finals MVP.

Steve Kerr badly wanted Stephen Curry to win this championship.

The Golden State Warriors closed out the Finals over the Boston Celtics on Thursday, winning their fourth championship in eight years. It was a remarkable comeback, as the Warriors missed the postseason the past two years amid injuries and roster churn.

After Game 6, Kerr was asked by ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt about Curry breaking down in tears as the Warriors won the championship. Kerr paid tribute to Curry’s leadership and said he wanted to win “for” Curry.

“Andre Iguodala and I have been talking the last week and all we could say to each other is, ‘We gotta do this for Steph.’ This is for Steph,” Kerr said. “Which is ironic because he’s the one doing it for us.

“But we wanted it so badly for Steph because as great as the organization has been — ownership, front office, great talent on our roster, amazing players — Steph is the reason for this decade. He really is.”

Describing Curry as a “transcendent athlete and human being,” Kerr added: “I’ve compared him to Tim Duncan a million times. He has that kind of humility and confidence all wrapped up into one, it makes everyone in that locker room all want to fight for him. He’s amazing and I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Earlier in the night, Kerr called this championship the defining achievement of Curry’s career. Curry also won Finals MVP for the first time.

Curry had a dominant NBA Finals, averaging 31 points per game on 48% shooting, 43% from three-point range. Curry carried the Warriors at times, like in a critical Game 4 in Boston when Curry poured in 43 points while making seven three-pointers, as the Warriors evened the series, 2-2.

After a quiet Game 5 win in San Francisco, Curry came back alive in Game 6, scoring 34 points on 12-of-21 shooting, 6-of-11 for three. He also added 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals.

Curry was emotional for several moments after the game, celebrating passionately with teammates, coaches, and family. In a postgame interview with ESPN, Curry said no one expected the Warriors to make it back to being Finals champions.

Kerr admitted as much to Van Pelt.

“Especially after what we’ve been through the last couple of years. We had the worst record in the league two years ago, decimated by injuries and departures,” Kerr said. “For this group to make it back here — I am not sure we ever knew we could do this. We hoped we could, but we didn’t know it. So it’s pretty amazing.”

Kerr has frequently raved about Curry’s leadership and humility.

Meanwhile, Curry has expressed similar feelings about his head coach. During a podcast interview last season, Curry admitted that Kerr won him over when he became head coach in 2014 by being humble and stressing that he wanted to help make the team better.

The result has been a dominant run matched by few others and an all-time great coach-player partnership.

Golden State Warriors’ Gary Payton II, Otto Porter Jr., Andre Iguodala questionable for Game 1, Steve Kerr says

SAN FRANCISCO — Gary Payton II, Otto Porter Jr. and Andre Iguodala are being considered “questionable” heading into Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Wednesday afternoon.

Payton has been out since Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals after breaking his elbow on a controversial play with Memphis’ Dillon Brooks. Porter missed the last game and a half of the conference finals with left foot soreness. Iguodala missed 30 of the last 36 regular-season games and all of the playoffs thus far with leg and neck injuries.

On Wednesday, Kerr said the trio participated fully in practice, even scrimmaging with the team — the first time they had done contact work since their respective injuries.

“I’ve still got some boxes to check,” Payton said on Tuesday. “Go day by day, you know, see what happens and hope for the best … I’m starting to feel normal. Still not me yet.”

On Wednesday, Porter said he felt good and the fact he participated in every part of practice was a good sign.

Iguodala was more coy when discussing his status.

“It’s been an interesting year with my body,” Iguodala said. “But been using my brain a lot and understanding that’s a big part of — knitting that fabric … Just understanding that you can have an impact in a myriad of different ways, just being ready in any way that I’ve been asked. If it’s on the court, and hopefully it is, I just got to be ready and keep open for it, being optimistic with everything that’s going on with the body.”

That being said, Iguodala’s ultimate goal is to “finish the season walking on two feet. If I do that, it’s a successful season.”

When Iguodala rejoined the Warriors last summer, there were question marks surrounding how much playing time he had left in him. The Warriors started off resting Iguodala on one end of back-to-backs and never rushed him back from early-season ailments. The plan all along was to do whatever it took to have him available for the postseason.

Now, it’s unclear not only if he will be able to contribute to the Warriors’ deep playoff run, but even if he does, how much.

“You go back to my goals coming back, it’s similar to my sentiments when I first signed with the team in 2013 or ’14 — ’13,” Iguodala said. “It was the same thing: get us back to where we’re supposed to be. We’ve gotten back here.”

Steve Kerr: ‘I’m tired of the moments of silence,’ says Warriors coach as he makes powerful plea against gun violence

Kerr refused to speak about basketball ahead of Game 4 of the Warriors’ series against the Dallas Mavericks, instead raising his voice as he railed against gun violence in the wake of Tuesday’s shooting.

“In the last 10 days, we’ve had elderly Black people killed in a supermarket in Buffalo, we’ve had Asian churchgoers killed in Southern California, now we have children murdered at school,” Kerr told reporters at the start of the press conference.

“When are we going to do something? I’m tired. I’m so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there … I’m tired of the moments of silence. Enough.

“There’s 50 Senators right now who refuse to vote on H.R. 8, which is a background check rule that the House passed a couple years ago. It’s been sitting there for two years. There’s a reason they won’t vote on it: to hold onto power.”

Last year, the House passed H.R. 8 to expand background checks on all commercial gun sales — the first congressional move on significant gun control since the Democrats won the White House.
Currently, background checks are not required for gun sales and transfers by unlicensed and private sellers.

“I’m fed up. I’ve had enough,” Kerr, whose father was serving as the president of the American University of Beirut when he was assassinated by gunmen in 1984, continued.

“We’re going to play the game tonight. But I want every person here, every person listening to this, to think about your own child or grandchild, mother or father, sister, brother. How would you feel if this happened to you today?”

Tuesday’s shooting by a lone, 18-year-old gunman, who was killed by law enforcement, was the second mass shooting in the US in less than two weeks after a different 18-year-old gunman trafficking in White supremacist theories killed 10 Black Americans in Buffalo.

Ahead of Tuesday’s game in Dallas, which was preceded by a moment of silence, Warriors guard Damion Lee joined Kerr in calling for gun reform.

“It’s just sad,” Lee told reporters. “Obviously, everyone saw Steve’s pregame presser. Those are my exact same sentiments. It’s sad the world that we live in. We need to reform that.

“Guns shouldn’t be as easily accessible. Like, it’s easier to get a gun than baby formula right now. That’s unbelievable in this country that we live in.”

The NBA said in a statement that it is “devastated by the horrific shooting that took place today in Uvalde, Texas,” while Mavs head coach Jason Kidd said ahead of the game that his team would play “with heavy hearts.”

“We’re going to try to play the game. We have no choice. The game is not going to be canceled. But we have to find a way to be pro, find a way to win and move forward,” said Kidd.

“But the news of what’s happening, not just here in Texas but throughout our country, is sad.”

The Mavs won the game 119-109 and trail the Warriors 3-1 in the Western Conference Finals.

Warriors’ Steve Kerr delivers emotional, passionate plea in wake of Texas elementary school shooting

Steve Kerr’s pregame press conference had nothing to do with basketball ahead of Game 4 of the Western Conference finals between the Warriors and Mavericks on Tuesday. Instead, the Warriors head coach delivered a three-minute monologue in response to Tuesday’s shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which left at least 19 students and two adults dead.

Kerr, who has consistently spoken out about gun violence in America and campaigned for gun control, was visibly shaking and on the verge of tears at times during his address to the media on Tuesday. Here is the entirety of his pregame availability, along with a video of his speech.

I’m not going to talk about basketball. Nothing’s happened with our team in the last six hours. We’re going to start the same way tonight. Any basketball questions don’t matter.

Since we left shootaround, 14 children were killed 400 miles from here. And a teacher. In the last 10 days, we’ve had elderly Black people killed in a supermarket in Buffalo, we’ve had Asian churchgoers killed in Southern California. Now we have children murdered at school.

When are we going to do something? I’m tired. I’m so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there. I’m so tired. Excuse me. I’m sorry. I’m tired of the moments of silence. Enough!

There’s 50 senators right now who refuse to vote on HR8, which is a background check rule that the House passed a couple years ago. It’s been sitting there for two years. And there’s a reason they won’t vote on it: to hold onto power.

So I ask you, Mitch McConnell, I ask all of you senators who refuse to do anything about the violence and school shootings and supermarket shootings. I ask you: Are you going to put your own desire for power ahead of the lives of our children and our elderly and our churchgoers? Because that’s what it looks like. It’s what we do every week.

So I’m fed up. I’ve had enough. We’re going to play the game tonight. But I want every person here, every person listening to this, to think about your own child or grandchild, or mother or father, sister, brother. How would you feel if this happened to you today?

We can’t get numb to this. We can’t sit here and just read about it and go, well, let’s have a moment of silence — yea, Go Dubs. C’mon, Mavs, let’s go. That’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to go play a basketball game.

Fifty senators in Washington are going to hold us hostage. Do you realize that 90 percent of Americans, regardless of political party, want background checks — universal background checks? Ninety percent of us. We are being held hostage by 50 senators in Washington who refuse to even put it to a vote, despite what we, the American people, want.

They won’t vote on it because they want to hold onto their own power. It’s pathetic! I’ve had enough!

Kerr’s father, Malcolm, was killed by gunmen in 1984 while serving as the president of the American University of Beirut. The Warriors coach has spoken out against various shootings over the course of the past several years, imploring government officials to make meaningful changes to America’s gun control laws.

Multiple NBA players, including LeBron James, expressed outrage over Tuesday’s shooting. The NBA issued a statement via Twitter:

“The NBA family is devastated by the horrific shooting that took place today in Uvalde, Texas. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the victims’ family and friends, and the entire Robb Elementary School and Uvalde community.”

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd also addressed the shooting prior to Game 4.

“It’s tough. You know, as coaches or fathers, we have kids. People in this room have kids. Elementary school. You just think about what could take place with any of your family or friends at a school,” Kidd said. “This is on-the-run job training. We’re going to try to play the game. We have no choice. The game is not going to be canceled. But we have to find a way to be pro, find a way to win, and move forward.

“But the news of what’s happening, not just here in Texas but throughout our country, is sad.”
