Mario Kart 9 Is “In Active Development” And Comes With A “New Twist”, Analyst Claims

It feels like an awfully long time has passed since the last traditional Mario Kart experience came our way.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe arrived on Switch back in 2017, which itself was a rerelease of 2014’s Wii U entry, and with mobile’s Mario Kart Tour and experimental Switch title Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit filling the gap since, some fans are beginning to wonder when the next ‘main’ game will arrive. According to one trusted games industry analyst, the next entry could actually be speeding into view quicker than you think.

Kantan Games’ Dr. Serkan Toto has shared his gaming predictions for 2022 with GamesIndustry.biz, noting that he believes the industry will likely see fewer delays this year and that crypto gaming could be about to get even bigger. In amongst those predictions, though, Toto discusses what he calls ‘Mario Kart 9’, a true successor to Mario Kart 8 that he claims is “in active development”.

“I am aware Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling very well on the Nintendo Switch, but Mario Kart 9 is in active development (and comes with a new twist) and Nintendo could tease it this year.”

So, a new Mario Kart game? With a brand new twist? And it could be shown off this year? Yes please.

Toto also believes that 2022 could see another mobile take on a classic Nintendo IP:

“On mobile, Nintendo has been very silent since Mario Kart Tour’s launch in 2019, but I think 2022 is when we will see an established IP arriving on smart devices again.”

Do you think it’s time for a brand new Mario Kart game? Could you imagine Nintendo showing off a new Mario Kart project this year? Race into our comment section below.

Mario Kart Live’s 2.0 update makes multiplayer much easier and cheaper

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, Nintendo’s AR-powered Mario Kart game that lets you race physical toy karts around your home with the Nintendo Switch, just got updated to version 2.0 with a much-requested feature: splitscreen local multiplayer.

Previously, multiplayer Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit was a complex and costly endeavor. You’d need two karts — the base game only comes with one — as well as two Nintendo Switch consoles, and the action would play out on each player’s Switch screen. With the 2.0 update, you can hook up one Switch to a TV so both players can stay on the couch as they race their karts around the room.

There’s also a new Relay Race mode that allows for multiplayer games with just a single kart. Between two and four players can select their own characters, with control switching between them after every lap. In addition, the update is adding a new tournament called the Luigi Cup along with three new courses.

Nintendo is further lowering the barrier to entry by including Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit in its Black Friday sales. The game —including one kart — will cost $59.99 from November 21st, which saves you $40 off the MSRP.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Races Past Mario Kart Wii To Become the Bestselling Game In the Series

Are we ever going to get Mario Kart 9? It’s tough to say because Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch keeps selling gangbusters.

According to Nintendo’s financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal year ending in March 2022, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 38.74 million copies on Nintendo Switch. It has now surpassed the lifetime sales of Mario Kart Wii, which is at 37.38 million copies.

The game has even outsold Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sits at 34.85 million copies sold. It was a huge hit last year, especially since it launched on the cusp of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mario Kart 8 originally was released in May 2014 for Wii U but eventually was ported over to Nintendo Switch as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in April 2017. In fact, both versions of the game were such a hit that combined, Mario Kart 8 is the best-selling racing game in US history. I mean, even the US President, Joe Biden, plays it.

Nintendo Switch has been on a roll lately. It was recently revealed that the console has sold another 8.3 million units over the past six months, which now brings its total lifetime sales to 93 million. However, it looks like sales will start slowing down a little bit since there is an ongoing semiconductor shortage.
