VP Kamala Harris, Rev. Al Sharpton and family honor Tyre Nichols at his funeral – FOX13 News Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tyre Nichols, who died on January 10, 2023, three days after five former Memphis Police officers were caught on camera beating the 29-year-old at the intersection of Ross Road and Raines Road, was honored by family and dignitaries at his funeral service February 1.

Nichols’ funeral was held at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis, Tennessee.

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith, the five former Memphis Police officers which MPD said were seen beating Nichols in that video, were all charged with two counts of official misconduct, one count of official oppression, one count of second-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated kidnapping.

TYRE NICHOLS’ MOTHER, FAMILY AND MOURNERS SAY GOODBYE

“For this to happen to him is just unimaginable,” said RowVaughn Wells, Nichols’ mother.

Nichols was laid to rest, Wednesday, at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis.

“I promise you the only thing that’s keeping me going is I believe my son was sent here on an assignment from God,” said Wells.

Nichols’ mother, brother and siblings spoke at the funeral.

“We’re looking forward to getting justice for all the families over there, not just ours,” said Rodney Wells, Nichols’ father.

The Reverend Al Sharpton eulogized Nichols.

“Let’s get rid of qualified immunity and see if you learn the same manners you have on the white side of town,” Rev. Sharpton said. “‘Well reverend, you don’t understand.  How are they going to keep crime down in the Black community and at the same time not be tough and rough?’,” Rev. Sharpton continued. “Well, they do it the same way they do it on the white side of the town and they keep the crime down without rough and touch. How do you have the same department and keep crime down on one side of town without beating folk to death, but you can’t do it on the other side of town?  I can’t speak for everybody gathering, but for me, I believe if that man had been white you wouldn’t have beat him like that, that night … In the city that Doctor King lost his life, not far away from that balcony you beat a brother to death. There’s nothing more insulting and offensive to those of us who fought to open doors and you walk through those doors and act like the folks we had to fight for to get you through those doors,” said Reverend Sharpton.

More migrants dropped off outside Kamala Harris’ home in freezing weather on Christmas Eve

CNN
 —

Several busloads of migrants were dropped off in front of Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington, DC, on Christmas Eve in 18 degree weather late Saturday.

An initial two busloads were taken to local shelters, according to an administration official. More buses arrived outside the vice president’s residence later Saturday evening. A CNN team saw migrants being dropped off, with some migrants wearing only T-shirts in the freezing weather. They were given blankets and put on another bus that went to a local church.

Amy Fischer, a volunteer with the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network, which has been receiving migrants sent to DC since the spring, said her organization was prepared for Saturday night’s arrivals. Busloads of migrants have been arriving in Washington weekly since April.

“The DC community has been welcoming buses from Texas anytime they’ve come since April. Christmas Eve and freezing cold weather is no different,” she said. “We are always here welcoming folks with open arms.”

It’s not clear who is responsible for sending the migrants to the Naval Observatory, though CNN reported earlier this year that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott had sent buses of migrants north, including to a location outside Harris’ home.

Migrant tells CNN what he was promised to get on plane

Abbott is one of at least three Republican governors who have taken credit for busing or flying migrants north this year to protest the Biden administration’s immigration policies. He previously confirmed in September that his state had sent the buses to Harris’ residence at that time.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story misidentified the person who spoke about her group being prepared for the migrant arrivals. It was Amy Fischer, a volunteer with the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network.

Karen Bass sworn in as first female mayor of Los Angeles by Kamala Harris

CNN
 —

Karen Bass was sworn in as the first female mayor of Los Angeles on Sunday, marking another historic achievement in her career.

Kamala Harris – the first woman and first woman of color to become vice president – administered the oath of office at Los Angeles City Hall.

Bass focused her remarks Sunday on her plans to solve the city’s housing crisis, with some 40,000 people living on the streets.

“Today, too many Angelenos have no choice but to crowd multiple families into one home, and to work multiple jobs just to barely pay rent,” Bass said.

“Tragically, our city has earned the shameful crown as being home to the most crowded neighborhoods in the nation – Pico Union, South L.A., East L.A., the East Valley,” she added. “And Angelenos, we know our mission – we must build housing in every neighborhood.”

She said her first act as mayor will be to declare a state of emergency on homelessness.

Though billions of dollars in state, city and county money are being directed toward interim and permanent housing units, construction has moved slowly. The latest count measured a 1.7% rise in homelessness from the last count in 2020.

Bass’ plan calls for housing 15,000 people by the end of one year and ending tent encampments using existing funding. She has said the city would put more resources into trained “neighborhood service teams” to connect people with housing and mental health services.

The six-term congresswoman has argued that her longtime relationships with state and national lawmakers would result in increased funding to Los Angeles to address the city’s housing crisis.

Bass has also promised to use her connections within the Biden administration to troubleshoot problems like the need for more federal housing vouchers. As mayor, she has said she would also pursue federal waivers to allow the creation of mental health and substance abuse facilities with a greater number of beds.

Bass, whose home was burglarized earlier this year during the campaign, has also promised to address concerns about crime, noting her proposal to bring police staffing back up at a time when the city has struggled to recruit new officers. She has proposed moving at least 250 police officers back onto patrol from administrative work and has said she would hire more civilian employees to free up more officers to get back on the beat.

Bass overcame a fierce challenge from real estate magnate Rick Caruso, who spent more than $104 million to defeat her in November. She’s succeeding term-limited Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Elected to the California state Assembly in 2004, Bass made history some four years later as the first Black woman to serve as speaker of any state legislature.

When Bass takes office, the four largest cities in the US will all have Black mayors – that includes Eric Adams of New York City, Lori Lightfoot of Chicago and Sylvester Turner of Houston.

Saudi-Thai cooperation on food and energy ‘a good sign,’ says APEC executive director

Saudi Arabia’s commitment to energy investments in Thailand is a “good sign” for diplomatic relations between the two counties, APEC executive director Kasemsit Pathomsak told CNBC’s Sri Jegarajah.

In May, state-backed Aramco signed a memorandum of understanding with Thailand’s national oil company in efforts to strengthen energy cooperation with Thailand and boost its presence in the region. In the same month, the Saudi Arabian Investment Fund said it would use Thailand as a hub for investment in Southeast Asia.

“It’s a good sign… to certainly reconnect at a time when both economies are sizable enough and there are a lot of synergies here to be had,” said Pathomsak, pointing to food and energy as areas for potential cooperation.

The deals suggest further thawing of relations after the 30-year “Blue Diamond Affair,” which involved theft of Saudi jewels and the deaths of Saudi diplomats in Thailand. In January, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha became the first Thai head of government to visit the kingdom since the dispute.

Around 50 more migrants got off a bus outside Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington, D.C., Saturday.

Three more buses also arrived in New York City, as Texas continued to pressure sanctuary cities amid a surge of migrants crossing the southern border.

The D.C. bus carried people mostly from Venezuela, including a one-month-old baby. Aid workers quickly whisked the migrants away to a local shelter.

The transports come as the immigration issue has again rocketed to the forefront of national attention after planes carrying migrants arrived in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

Nancy Mace fires back at Kamala Harris’ attack on Texas Gov. Abbott: ‘She has no solutions’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., joined “Fox & Friends First” Monday to respond to Vice President Kamala Harris lashing out at Texas Gov. Greg Abbott by calling him a “so-called leader” who is focusing on political attacks, instead of solutions to the border crisis.

Mace said Harris is lashing out at leaders like Abbott for having real solutions.

“I think every American, whether you’re on the southern border or not, would like an answer to Kamala Harris on why she has no solution to the border.”

DHS ANTICIPATES AN AVERAGE OF 441 UNACCOMPANIED CHILDREN PER DAY AT BORDER THIS YEAR, A NEW RECORD

Texas Rep. Jodey Arrington is backing moves by officials in his state to take matters relating to the migrant crisis into their own hands, claiming President Biden “surrendered control” of the border and describing the situation as an invasion.

“They are absolutely doing the right thing, and I commend the governor for following suit,” the Republican congressman told Fox News Digital in an interview this week.

Arrington spoke after a flurry of moves in Texas related to the border. On Tuesday, multiple counties declared the crisis at the southern border an “invasion” and called on Gov. Greg Abbott to do the same, arguing that it would give the state more power to send illegal immigrants to Mexico.

Abbott signed an executive order Thursday that allows the Texas National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to apprehend and return illegal immigrants who have crossed between ports of entry to the southern border. Under the order, illegal aliens will be taken to the U.S., but not into Mexico.

Mace said the border crisis should be “a bipartisan concern” and despite the illegal crossings and fentanyl coming across, the Biden administration has done nothing. She went on to say that the border crisis is one of the top issues that will lead to Republican victories in the midterm elections.

“You’re going to see a giant red wave in November. This is why it’s important to back Republicans who have solutions, Republicans like Gov. Greg Abbott and others along the border and others in Congress that have solutions to this looming crisis that’s getting worse and worse by the day.”

Kamala Harris caught in word salad when asked if Democrats failed to codify Roe v Wade

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Vice President Kamala Harris was caught with another course of word salad, this time during an interview with CBS News.

Following the historic Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, CBS News correspondent Robert Costa asked Harris on Friday whether Democrats both in the White House and in Congress “failed” to codify the federal protection of abortions in the nearly 50 years since the precedent was established.

“I think that, to be very honest with you, I do believe that we should have rightly believed, but we certainly believe that certain issues are just settled. Certain issues are just settled,” Harris responded.

“Clearly were not,” Costa replied.

“No, that’s right,” Harris said. “And that’s why I do believe that we are living, sadly, in real unsettled times.”

Critics panned her comments, some calling them incoherent “word salad.”

“This is incoherent. Is everything ok…?” Emma Vigeland of the progressive YouTube show “Majority Report.”

“Captions need a bouncing ball to follow along with the words,” Ring Magazine reporter Ryan Songalia tweeted.

KAMALA HARRIS PANNED FOR OFFERING ‘WORD SALAD’ AT WH EVENT WITH JAMAICAN PRIME MINISTER: ‘IS SHE PUNKING US?’

“What is with this administration and an aversion to basic speaking skills and grasp of the English language?” NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck wondered.

“hm that’s not what was asked,” reporter Dan Moritz-Rabson reacted.

“Somewhere at a Montana vacation lodge someone just pumped his fist in the air,” journalist David Freedlander quipped, alluding to the highly-speculated 2024 prospects of Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Others knocked the vice president over the substance of her answer, specifically suggesting Democrats believed Roe v. Wade was “settled.”

“How absurdly naive,” New Yorker staffer Lainna Fader reacted.

“Holy cow what a bad answer. This is going to cause a Dem revolt. The GOP has been after this for decades. But the Dems thought it settled so did nothing?!” conservative radio host Erick Erickson exclaimed.

“Anyone. Who has paid. The slightest. Tiniest. Bit of attention. To women’s health issues. For the past SEVERAL DECADES. Knew. It. Was. Not. Settled,” film critic Jason Bailey wrote.

“We’ve got to take this stuff seriously, as seriously as you are because you have been forced to take this seriously,” Harris said to the press and Highland Park residents.
