Elon Musk says he was joking about buying Manchester United

Aug 17 (Reuters) – Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, said early on Wednesday that he was joking when he tweeted hours previously that he was going to buy currently struggling English football club Manchester United Plc (MANU.N).

“No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams,” Musk posted when asked by a user if he was serious about buying the club. “Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U,” he added, “they were my fav (sic) team as a kid.”

Musk originally tweeted: “I’m buying Manchester United ur (sic) welcome,” without offering any details. Some Manchester United fans, disgruntled by their club’s declining fortunes of late, had previously urged Musk on Twitter to consider buying the club.

The tweet turnaround comes as Musk seeks to exit a $44 billion agreement to buy Twitter (TWTR.N) only four months after announcing on the platform he would buy the social media company, which has taken him to court.

Musk has a history of being unconventional and posting irreverent tweets, making it difficult sometimes to tell when he is joking.

“Next I’m buying Coca-Cola to put the cocaine back in,” he tweeted on April 27, two days after Twitter’s board accepted his unsolicited offer to buy the company.

Referring back to that post, on Wednesday he tweeted: “And I’m not buying Coca-Cola to put the cocaine back in, despite the extreme popularity of such a move.”

Musk’s tweets about potential acquisitions have landed him in hot water with U.S. regulators in the past.

In 2018, he tweeted that there was “funding secured” for a $72 billion deal to take Tesla private, but did not move ahead with an offer. Musk and Tesla each paid $20 million civil fines – and Musk stepped down as Tesla’s chairman – to resolve U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) claims that Musk defrauded investors.

The SEC did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Musk’s tweet that he was buying the club outside usual business hours.

Musk’s ambitions range from colonising Mars to creating a new sustainable energy economy, and in the process he has built the most valuable car company in the world, electric vehicle maker Tesla, rocket company SpaceX, and a slew of smaller firms. One is a tunnel maker called the Boring Company.

WIDESPREAD OPPOSITION

Manchester United is one of the most famous names in world football but is currently in crisis on the field amid angry calls from fans for the club’s current owners, the American Glazer family, to pull out.

Clamour from fans and pundits for a change of ownership at the three-time winners of the European Cup, the most prestigious club competition in the global game, is intensifying amid a lengthening run without winning major titles.

British newspaper The Daily Mirror reported last year that the Glazers, who have faced widespread fan opposition to their stewardship since acquiring the club in 2005 for 790 million pounds ($957 million), were prepared to sell but only if they were offered in excess of 4 billion pounds.

In its annual rankings this year, Forbes rated Manchester United, with its huge global fanbase, the third most valuable football club in the world, worth $4.6 billion, behind only Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

But shares in the New York-listed football club have slid a quarter in the past 12 months, valuing it at just over $2 billion. The stock has rebounded in the past month, gaining 16% to close at $12.78 on Tuesday.

The northern England-based team has more than 32 million followers on its main Twitter account and Musk’s first tweet about the club had garnered more than 430,000 ‘likes’ on the platform within five hours.

Musk, who is worth $270 billion, according to Forbes, could certainly afford to buy the club.

Last week, filings revealed that Musk had sold $6.9 billion worth of Tesla shares, which he said could be used to finance a potential Twitter deal if he loses a legal battle with the social media platform.

In total, Musk has sold about $32 billion worth of Tesla stock in less than a year partly to pay tax obligations and finance a Twitter deal.

Musk and his lawyer did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment on his original Twitter post before his message that he had been joking. The Florida-based Glazer family did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Internet Can’t Stop Joking About Nier Automata’s Secret Door

Screenshot: Square Enix

Well, that was fast. Nier: Automata’s secret door—the very same one that’s fractured the game’s fandom into factions—went from an amusing little secret to a viral meme in three days flat.

The Door, in case you haven’t followed the most baffling gaming story of the year, refers to a hidden location in Nier: Automata, an action-RPG first released in 2017. One player, known only by their Reddit handle, Sadfutago, stumbled upon a door, behind which is a fully rendered church. It sounds innocuous enough, but here’s where it gets weird: They’re the only known player who’s seen this area. And no one, seemingly including Sadfutago, knows how to enter the room.

The whole saga is wild, and still unfolding (here’s a thorough rundown). Some think it’s cut content or some other type of legitimate game asset. Others believe it’s fake: a hoax, a sophisticated mod, or an ill-advised attempt at viral marketing. The mystery has fans gathering in various Nier-themed subreddits and Discord servers to try and collectively crack the code.

The rest of the internet, meanwhile, is doing what it does best: Meme the heck out of it. This montage sums up the community reaction pretty well:

What if, for instance, Super Mario 64 also had its own version of The Door?

Folks are also drawing comparisons to media outside the world of games. To wit: Actor-comedian Nathan Fielder is back in the public arena due to his new HBO show, The Rehearsal, in which he constructs elaborate sets for the purposes of trickery. The Nier community has drawn an obvious corollary:

Others have likened it to scenes from Amazon’s The Boys, an eminently memeable show:

For some players, the saga has rekindled a dormant love for Nier: Automata—one of the best games of all time, yes, but also a dense action-RPG that can consume hours and hours of your life:

Obligatory Hozier references abound:

Followed by obligatory Doctor Who references:

There’s also no shortage of eye-wateringly gorgeous fan art, like this piece from digital artist MalphieR:

Despite all the buzz, Nier: Automata fans are no closer to figuring out what the hell The Door’s deal is. Just last night, Sadfutago posted a new video. In it, they fight a boss composed of pixelated blocks…and get summarily obliterated. It has sent the Nier subreddits and Discord servers into a tizzy, as folks try to figure out who the enemy is, where it’s from, or what it could mean.

“I…can’t fathom how this can possibly be real or how this can possibly be fake,” one person wrote on Reddit in response. “What.”

Kim Kardashian Unfollowed Kanye West On Instagram After He Blasted Pete Davidson For Joking About Him In A Viral “SNL” Skit

The resurfaced clip — in which Pete calls out the rapper for behaving like a “jackass” — began making the rounds on social media after Ye leveled insults at the comedian in a number of since-deleted Instagram posts last weekend.

After months of escalating conflict, Kim Kardashian has officially unfollowed Kanye West on Instagram.

On Thursday, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Kim — who filed for divorce from the rapper over a year ago — had stopped following her soon-to-be ex-husband.

The move came shortly after Kanye — who now goes by Ye — shared a number of posts reacting to a 2018 clip of Pete Davidson on Saturday Night Live, which began making the rounds on social media this week after Ye leveled insults at the comedian in a number of heated Instagram posts.

In case you weren’t aware, the conflict between Pete and Ye stems from the fact that Pete is currently dating Kim, whom Ye has spent months publicly trying to get back together with.

As I’m sure you’ve seen, the dispute reached new heights last weekend when the Donda rapper was called out for harassing Kim and Pete in a string of since-deleted Instagram posts, including several where he leaked their private text messages.

In the wake of mounting criticism, Ye issued a post on Tuesday taking “accountability” for his actions. But despite sharing a statement of regret, Ye quickly returned to the platform to blast Pete for “joking” about his mental health in the resurfaced SNL clip.

To provide some context, Pete talked about Ye’s mental health during a “Weekend Update” segment in 2018, which aired the week after Ye appeared as a musical guest on the show and controversially made an impromptu speech about Donald Trump while wearing a MAGA hat.

It’s important to mention that Ye was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016 and, at around the time of his SNL appearance, was facing a lot of criticism for his vocal support of Trump and extremely controversial statements on slavery.

In the past, Ye has treated his bipolar with medication, but he’s also been open about the fact that he often will stop taking meds when he’s working on new music.

In fact, not long after he appeared on SNL, Ye informed fans that he was no longer taking medication, explaining that it stifles his creativity. “I cannot be on meds and make watch the throne level or dark fantasy level music,” he tweeted at the time.

A year later, Kim told Vogue that “being on medication is not really an option” for Ye, “because it just changes who he is.”

And so, during the short SNL excerpt that began making the rounds last week, Pete — who was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in 2017 — can be seen making light of Ye’s stance on medication and suggesting that he should be treating his condition.

“Kanye, I know you’re like, ‘Yo, this is the real me, I’m off the meds.’ Take ‘em!” he jokes, before making reference to his own condition. “There’s no shame in the medicine game, I’m on ‘em! It’s great! Take them. There’s nothing wrong with taking them.”

In the segment, he goes on to accuse the rapper of acting like a “jackass” and using his bipolar disorder as an “excuse.”

“Being mentally ill is not an excuse to act like a jackass,” he says. “I’m quoting my therapist, my mom, and my mailman. Sorry, Carl. Seriously, one time I stopped taking my meds and I bit my mom. It’s all good. I bought her a house.”

The clip ends with Pete putting on a red cap that reads: “Make Kanye 2006 Again.”

Responding to the viral clip on Thursday, Ye issued a string of Instagram posts seemingly blasting the comedian for making jokes at his expense.

Nbc / NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images

“HI SKETE YOU GOT ANY MORE MENTAL HEALTH JOKES FOR ME,” the rapper wrote beneath a screenshot of Pete sporting the “Make Kanye 2006 Again” hat.

An hour later, he shared yet another post about the clip, this time seeming to hit back at the recent accusations that he had been harassing the SNL star, instead telling followers that he’s in pursuit of “payback.”

“This boy thought he could get away with performing this sketch for the team that wrote this for him,” he captioned a recording of the clip, adding, “This is not harassment This is payback.”

The resurfaced clip then seemed to launch Ye into a wider discussion about how the media has talked about his bipolar diagnosis, and in a third post shared a few hours later, he went on to criticize outlets who he says have tried to “bully” and “patronize” him with their coverage.

Saul Loeb / AFP via Getty Images

“Someone always telling you you’re crazy can drive someone crazy,” he began. “That’s the gaslighting That’s the harassment.”

Roy Rochlin / Getty Images

“The liberals have tried to discredit me for 20 years Page 6 TMZ and SNL are a gang That gang has tried to bully harass control discredit minimize and patronize me for years,” he wrote, before calling them “Godless.”

While Ye continued to post — and quickly delete — more statements of this nature, some observant fans noticed that Kim had unfollowed him.

After months of escalating conflict between the former couple — including Kim issuing a rare statement against her ex, accusing him of trying to “control and manipulate” her — the decision to unfollow comes as a fairly major turning point in their divorce.

And the move also suggests that Ye’s recent digs at Pete — and notably, his denial of harassing them — marked a significant breaking point for Kim.

To make matters more interesting, Ye returned the gesture and unfollowed her back. But that didn’t stop him from continuing to post about her on his page.

Just a few hours later, he shared a photograph of Times Square lit up by Kim’s recent Balenciaga campaign, saying it was “bitter sweet” for him to see.

“This Balenciaga campaign premiered in Times Square today,” he wrote. “I know ya’ll can understand that this is bitter sweet for me. This is awesome. All positive energy.”

Ye has since deleted all his posts about Kim and Pete, including the statement he issued on Tuesday addressing accusations of harassment toward the pair, which remained live on the account for several days.

Kanye West responds to resurfaced Pete Davidson SNL clip joking about rapper’s mental health issues: ‘This is payback’

Kanye West has responded to a resurfaced video of Pete Davidson speaking about the rapper’s “mental illness”.

On Wednesday (16 February), a 2018 Saturday Night Live clip went viral in which Davidson says that West’s “mental illness” is “no excuse [for him] to be a jacka**.”

Elsewhere in the clip, Davidson discusses the musician’s support of Donald Trump.

Over the last week, West – who legally changed his name to Ye last year – has shared a series of derogatory posts about Davidson, who is currently dating his estranged wife Kim Kardashian.

The 44-year-old has since responded to the viral 2018 clip of Davidson in an Instagram post that has since been deleted.

“HI SKETE [West’s nickname for Davidson] YOU GOT ANYMORE MENTAL HEALTH JOKES FOR ME?” wrote West alongside a screenshot of the comedian wearing a red hat reading: “Make Kanye 2006 again.”

He continued: “This boy thought he could get away with performing this sketch for the team that wrote this for him. This is not harassment. This is payback.”

In a separate post, which has also since been deleted, the Grammy award-winner wrote: “Someone always telling you you’re crazy can drive someone crazy. That’s the gaslighting. That’s the harassment. The liberals have been trying to discredit me for 20 years”.

The “Praise God” rapper said that the media have tried to “bully, harass, control, discredit, minimise and patronise” him.

Earlier this week, Jameela Jamil told people to stop “meme-ing” West.

Writing on Instagram, Jamil implored her followers to stop “enjoying and encouraging” the public behaviour from West, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018.

“We are watching a mentally ill man coaxed over the edge by our engagement/media attention,” wrote the Good Place star.

On Wednesday (15 February), West told followers that he “takes accountability” for his actions towards Kardashian.

The Donda artist deleted a number of recent Instagram posts and shared a message, which read: “I know sharing screen shots was jarring and came off as harassing Kim. I take accountability. I’m still learning in real time.”

Kardashian filed for divorce from West last year after marrying in 2014. Last December, she also filed a court petition to declare herself single.

Under fire, UK PM apologises for staff joking about Christmas lockdown party

LONDON, Dec 8 (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson apologised on Wednesday after a video surfaced showing his staff laughing and joking about a party in Downing Street during a Christmas COVID-19 lockdown last year when such festivities were banned.

Hours later the main aide featured in the video, Johnson’s press secretary at the time, Allegra Stratton, resigned as an adviser to the prime minister. In a tearful statement, she said she would regret the remarks she made in the video for the rest of her days. read more

For more than a week, Johnson and his team have repeated that no rules were broken in late 2020 after the Mirror newspaper reported there had been several parties including a wine-fuelled gathering of 40 to 50 people to mark Christmas.

On Wednesday, Johnson told parliament that he was furious about the video, which was first shown by ITV late on Tuesday, but said he had been repeatedly assured that no party took placeat Downing Street, his office and official residence.

Opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer accused Johnson of “taking the public for fools”, while Ian Blackford of the Scottish National Party told Johnson to resign. read more

It is the latest misstep by an administration which has been criticised over its handling of a sleaze scandal, the awarding of COVID contracts, the refurbishment of Johnson’s Downing Street apartment and the chaotic evacuation from Afghanistan.

Amid reports that the government could implement tougher COVID-19 measures as early as Thursday to slow the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant, news of the scandal could also discourage people from following any new rules. read more

“I apologise unreservedly for the offence that it has caused up and down the country, and I apologise for the impression that it gives,” Johnson told parliament.

Disciplinary action would be taken if it was found that rules had been broken, he said.

“But I repeat … that I have been repeatedly assured since these allegations emerged, that there was no party and that no COVID rules were broken.” read more

He also pledged to “get on with the job”, accusing the opposition for trying to “muddy the waters about events or non-events of a year ago”. read more

After days of denials, the video aired by ITV showed Stratton at a 2020 Downing Street rehearsal for a daily briefing, during which she laughed and joked about a reported Christmas gathering.

‘TAKEN FOR FOOLS’

In the video, another Johnson adviser asks Stratton: “I’ve just seen reports on Twitter that there was a Downing Street Christmas party on Friday night.Do you recognise those reports?”

Stratton, standing before British flags at an official Downing Street lectern, says: “I went home.” She then laughs and smiles. “Hold on. Hold on. Um. Er. Ah.” She appears lost for words and looks up.

On Wednesday, Stratton made a tearful statement to media outside her house, saying she was resigning from her current role as Johnson’s spokeswoman for COP26 and climate change.

“I understand the anger and frustration that people feel. To all of you who lost loved ones, who endured intolerable loneliness and who struggled with your businesses – I am truly sorry,” she said.

At the time of the Downing Street gathering, tens of millions of people across Britain were banned from meeting close family or friends for a traditional Christmas celebration – and even from bidding farewell to dying relatives.

Nearly 146,000 people have died from COVID in the United Kingdom and Johnson is weighing up whether to toughen curbs after the discovery of the new Omicron coronavirus variant.

Opposition leader Starmer said it was obvious what had happened at Downing Street. read more

“Ant and Dec are ahead of the prime minister on this,” Starmer said – referring to a popular British comedy duo who have made jokes about the outcry – to loud laughter from opposition lawmakers in parliament.

“The prime minister has been caught red-handed,” Starmer said in an exchange with Johnson in the House of Commons.

Conservative Party lawmaker Roger Gale said that if parliament had been deliberately misled over the party, then it would be a resignation matter.

But another Conservative lawmaker said that while the mood in the ruling party was poor, there was not the strength of feeling yet for a move against Johnson.

Johnson is also facing questions about whether he sought to ensure that pets were evacuated from Kabul during the Western pullout in August while Afghan people trying to seek refuge abroad were left behind.

Jay Leno apologizes for joking about Asians, advocacy group says

Media Action Network for Asian Americans has mounted a yearslong campaign regarding the former “Tonight Show” host’s history of racist remarks, according to a press release it shared Thursday with CNN.

The apology comes as violence has increased against Asian and Asian Americans in the US. Six Asian women were among those killed in shootings at three Atlanta-area spas last week, and a surge in reports of Ant-Asian hate has sounded a nationwide alarm.

MANAA said it’s been complaining for almost 15 years about Leno’s comments. The group said that, in a recent Zoom call between Leno, MANAA leader Guy Aoki, President Rob Chan and Vice President Lawrence Lim, the comedian expressed his remorse.

“At the time I did those jokes, I genuinely thought them to be harmless,” they quoted Leno as saying in a joint press release with MANAA . “I was making fun of our enemy North Korea, and like most jokes, there was a ring of truth to them.”

CNN has reached out to both reps for Leno and MANAA for further comment.

In 2002 Leno was documented as having made jokes about Chinese people and Koreans eating dogs and the comments continued over the years.

According to the MANAA press release “The day after the first of those jokes in February 2002, then Asian Pacific American Media Coalition (APAMC, of which MANAA is a founding member) chair Karen Narasaki and the Executive Director of Korean American Coalition had a conference call with Leno, who insisted some Koreans ate dogs.”

The jokes became fodder for discussion in 2019 after Gabrielle Union’s controversial exit as a judge from “America’s Got Talent” in which she detailed what she said was a toxic work environment, including Leno allegedly making Asian staffers uncomfortable by making such a joke. MANAA cited Variety’s reporting on the allegation in their news release.

“Whenever we received a complaint, there would be two sides to the discussion: Either ‘We need to deal with this’ or ‘Screw ’em if they can’t take a joke,'” Leno is quoted in the press release as saying. “Too many times I sided with the latter even when in my heart I knew it was wrong.”

“I do not consider this particular case to be another example of cancel culture but a legitimate wrong that was done on my part. MANAA has been very gracious in accepting my apology,” he said.

“I hope that the Asian American community will be able to accept it as well, and I hope I can live up to their expectations in the future.”
