McCarthy Asks Whatever Joker Hid His Gavel to Give It Back

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Kevin McCarthy’s tenure as Speaker of the House got off to an awkward start as the California congressman asked “whatever joker” hid his gavel to return it at once.

“O.K., guys, you’ve had your fun,” McCarthy said, his voice barely audible over the derisive hoots of his fellow-Republicans. “I’m going to count to ten, and then I expect to have my gavel back.”

“Kev knows how count to ten?” Representative Matt Gaetz asked, after which members of the Freedom Caucus egged him on by chanting, “Gaetz! Gaetz! Gaetz! Gaetz!”

“C’mon, Matt, stop being such an ass,” McCarthy retorted.

“I know you are, but what am I?” the Florida congressman shot back.

Seemingly losing his patience, McCarthy leapt from the podium and attempted to throttle Gaetz before the two were separated by congresswomen Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In the scuffle’s aftermath, Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio defended whoever hid the Speaker’s gavel. “Was today a little messy?” Jordan said. “Yes. But this was democracy at its best.”

Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker sequel is releasing in October 2024, and Lady Gaga is joining the cast

The sequel to 2019’s Oscar-winning Joker is planned for release on October 4th, 2024. Deadline reported the news Thursday, and director Todd Phillips confirmed the release date in an Instagram post. Joaquin Phoenix, who won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the character in the first movie, is returning, and Lady Gaga will be joining the cast.

The Instagram post doesn’t reveal who Gaga might play, but a potential role would be Joker’s long-standing partner Harley Quinn (previously played by Margot Robbie in the DCEU). The film is rumored to incorporate more musical elements, though, which would make Gaga a logical fit. Phillips previously shared on Instagram that the sequel was moving ahead in June under the title Joker: Folie à Deux, which literally translates to “madness for two.”

Although Joker had originally been intended as a standalone film, its success at the box office and the Academy Awards (where it received 11 nominations including for Best Picture) made a sequel an obvious choice. That’s especially the case given the bumpy performance of Warner Bros. films based on titles from DC Comics. Although this year’s The Batman was widely considered to be a success (with a sequel quickly greenlit), Ezra Miller’s solo outing as The Flash has been mired in difficulties, and last year’s The Suicide Squad flopped at the box office.

Production on the Joker sequel is due to kick off in December, Deadline reports.

Update August 4th, 12:29PM ET: The movie’s release date and Lady Gaga’s casting have been confirmed.

Harley Quinn Showrunners Say No Chance of a Joker Romance

Screenshot: HBO Max

Season three of DC animated series Harley Quinn is now streaming on HBO Max, and showrunners Justin Halpen and Patrick Schumacker sat down with the AV Club to catch up fans on what to expect—or, in the case of a certain romance thankfully left in Harley’s past, what not to expect.

First, they addressed a couple of points in the series’ transition from DC Universe to the streamer. “HBO Max swooped in, saved the show,” said Schumacker. “From the jump on season three, they were like, ‘We love what you guys are doing. Don’t try and fix something that’s not broken.’ If anything, they’ve been like, ‘Go, go harder. If you want to be even edgier, we’re all for it.’”

That included leaning into Harley’s romance with Ivy, which has had some backlash from Joker and Harley shippers who want them to get back together. Schumacker quickly wrote that possibility off. “We still have the occasional fan reaction of ‘I don’t like Harley and Ivy together. She should get back with the Joker,’ which we’re never going to do. Harley and Ivy will never break up in the series as long as we have a say. That’s something that we never want to touch again.”

Centering Harley’s queer love story on her journey was always the plan. Halpern explained, “It was always a place we wanted to get to, but we wanted to make sure that we were telling a story first. How is Harley figuring out her own identity? What sort of self-discovery is she doing after this relationship with the Joker, right? And so if you just had her jump right back into another relationship right after that, because the fans are like, ‘Why aren’t they together right away?’would you want that? This person is so fucked up and just coming out of a terrible relationship. When have you ever in the history of human beings seen someone leave a terrible relationship that they’ve had for a really long time and instantly make the next relationship work perfectly? It doesn’t happen a lot. So we wanted to sort of taking our time with that.”

And while yes, Halpern admitted they are “two straight white dudes” showrunning the series, they take the responsibility to be accountable for handling the story authentically with their team, and added, “We have a lot of people in the room who are queer.”

Schumacker elaborated, “We would credit probably Sabrina Jalees, who was a writer on season two and is queer, for being the one to tell us, ‘Please don’t do a coming out story.’ And she’s the reason that we didn’t do that. I think that was maybe our initial instinct.”

Halpern piped in, “Which is a perfect example of why when you populate a room with other voices who aren’t afraid to tell you what you’re about to do is stupid, your show just comes out better.”

Lady Gaga to play Harley Quinn in Joker sequel | Film

Lady Gaga is to play Harley Quinn in the sequel to the multi-award-winning Joker, which is due to see Joaquin Phoenix return to his lead role.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Gaga is in line to take the role of Quinn, the former Arkham Asylum psychiatrist who has regularly appeared in Batman-related narratives as the Joker’s sidekick and love interest. Margot Robbie played the character in a high-profile outing in the 2016 film Suicide Squad, as well as its 2021 sequel The Suicide Squad. Robbie’s version of the character was also the central figure in the 2020 superhero film Birds of Prey.

No details of the film’s plot have been revealed, but the Reporter says that Joker 2’s Quinn will “exist in a different DC universe than … Robbie’s Harley Quinn” – presumably reflecting the first Joker’s distant relationship with previous iterations of the character. Director and co-writer Todd Phillips posted a script cover page on social media on Wednesday suggesting the film’s subtitle is “Folie à Deux”, a reference to a psychiatric syndrome in which a delusional state is shared by two people, which could well refer to Quinn’s place in the film’s narrative.

The Reporter also states that Joker 2 will be “a musical”, though offers no further details.

In the same social media post Phillips also revealed a photograph of Phoenix reading the script, although reports say that Phoenix has not yet committed to the project. The Reporter says its sources claim that “Warners has yet to close a deal with the actor, with the two sides deep into it”, but it is inconceivable the project will move ahead without his participation.

Lady Gaga’s move into film acting has proved exceptionally successful so far, having received an Oscar nomination for best actress for A Star Is Born, and Bafta and Golden Globe nominations for best actress for House of Gucci.

‘Joker’ 2: Todd Phillips Reveals Title, Joaquin Phoenix Reading Script

Director Todd Phillips posted to Instagram the first confirmation that the sequel to 2019’s “Joker” is moving forward on Tuesday — including the cover of the script, written by Phillips and Scott Silver, his collaborator on the first film, with the eyebrow-raising title “Joker: Folie à Deux.”

In the same post, Phillips included a shot of star Joaquin Phoenix reading the screenplay.

A spokesperson for Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Phillips’ Instagram post.

Phillips’ original “Joker” film reframed the iconic Batman villain into an anti-hero character study about a struggling comedian and part-time clown performer named Arthur Fleck who becomes a folk hero in Gotham City after he lashes out in acts of shocking violence. Moody, dark and studiously avoiding the action beats typical of superhero cinema, the film was still a massive global blockbuster, grossing over $1 billion worldwide. It earned 12 Oscar nominations, including for best picture, best director for Phillips, and best adapted screenplay for Phillips and Silver. Phoenix won the Oscar for best actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir won for best original score.

Soon after the film’s debut in 2019, Phillips and Silver met with then-Warner Bros. film chief Toby Emmerich about a possible sequel. Since then, Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” survived a pandemic shutdown and star Robert Pattinson contracting COVID the day after the film restarted, to become one of the first global blockbusters of pandemic era, grossing $770.3 million in global box office returns. Both “Joker” and “The Batman” exist in separate continuities from the other DC adaptations — Reeves even cast Barry Keoghan to play a different version of the Joker in a cameo role.

While Phillips did not share any plot details about the new “Joker” movie in his Instagram post, the title does offer some intriguing implications. Translated literally as “shared madness,” folie à deux is a layman’s term for shared delusional disorder. That could refer to how Arthur’s villainy is widely embraced by Gotham City in the first film, but it could also suggest that Phillips’ sequel will bring his own interpretation of Joker’s main (and, really, only) partner in life, crime and madness, Harley Quinn — who has been played in other DC adaptations by Margot Robbie (in live-action) and Kaley Cuoco (in animation).
