JoJo Siwa and Avery Cyrus split soon after confirming relationship

CNN
 —

It’s over for JoJo Siwa and Avery Cyrus.

The Nickelodeon alum and the TikTok star appear to still be friends, however. On Dec. 17, Avery posted to TikTok with a video of herself and Siwa on a Royal Caribbean cruise together. Siwa is holding up a game prize, saying to Cyrus, “This is my ‘Sorry for Breaking Up With You’ present.”

When one fan asked why the duo had split, Cyrus responded, “We decided that we are better off as friends! We are both so young and still just trying to figure our stuff out!”

The two had publicly celebrated their one-month anniversary in November with a picnic on the beach. They had gone official in September with a video of them kissing on a date to Chuck E. Cheese.

“Celebrating our 1 month in the most special way,” Siwa had posted to Instagram, “happy 1 month to the happiest girl who makes me more happy than ever:).”

The two made their red carpet debut soon after at the opening of “Jagged Little Pill” in Los Angeles.

JoJo Siwa and girlfriend Avery Cyrus split after just three months of dating… as they’re ‘better off as friends’

JoJo Siwa and girlfriend Avery Cyrus have called it quits after just three months of dating.

Cyrus, a 22-year-old TikTok creator, confirmed the news in a video shared Saturday that featured a clip of Siwa, 19, presenting her with a ‘sorry for breaking up with you present.’

When one fan asked for an explanation regarding the breakup, Cyrus explained that she and Siwa decided to just be friends and focus on themselves.

‘We decided that we are better off as friends! We are both so young and still just trying to figure our stuff out,’ the content creator wrote.

Siwa and Cyrus originally sparked romance rumors back in August in a TikTok where they lip synced to an old voiceover of KUWTK star Kourtney Kardashian and her baby daddy Scott Disick.

They went social media official in September when a clip showed them making out at a Chuck E. Cheese.

The pair talked a bit about their relationship in October in a vlog. Cyrus said, ‘We’re girlfriends now. I’m so happy you said yes. I knew you weren’t gonna say no, I was just nervous.’

Siwa then replied, ‘I’d be insane if I said no, you’re the best girlfriend in the world.’

The Nebraska native dated Kylie Prew after coming out last year. The pair broke up in August after dating for more than a year and a half.

‘But like, I don’t know, bisexual, pansexual, queer, lesbian, gay, straight. I always just say gay because it just kind of covers it or queer because I think the keyword is cool,’ Siwa told People in January 2021.

Most recently, JoJo became embroiled in a public war of words following controversial remarks made by Full House star Candace Cameron Bure.

‘We have not [talked], and I don’t think we ever will again,’ Siwa, 19, told People last month.

‘That’s what’s f***ed up,’ she continued. ‘You not liking gay marriage, do your thing girl. You being religious, do your thing girl. Of course, I would want everybody to do what they want to do. But to purposely exclude someone because of who they love, that’s sh***y.’

Bure came under fire after revealing in a Wall Street Journal interview that she anticipated her new Christian TV network would refrain from featuring gay couples in leading roles.

Siwa’s beef with Bure, 46, goes beyond the remarks – over the summer the dancer, who came out as part of the LGBTQ community last year, called the Full House actress the ‘rudest celebrity’ she had ever met.

JoJo Siwa Calls Out Candace Cameron Bure & Receives Support From ‘Fuller House’ Star Jodie Sweetin; GLAAD Issues Statement – Deadline

JoJo Siwa is sounding off on Candace Cameron Bure’s comments that her television movies on Great American Family will focus on “traditional marriage” and not members of the LGBTQ+ community.

“Honestly, I can’t believe after everything that went down just a few months ago, that she would not only create a movie with intention of excluding LGBTQIA+, but then also talk about it in the press. This is rude and hurtful to a whole community of people,” Siwa posted on Instagram.

The message received support from Bure’s Fuller House co-star Jodie Sweetin who replied to the post adding, “You know I love you.”

Siwa and Bure had a little tiff earlier this year when a viral video on TikTok had the Dance Moms alum claiming the Fuller House actor was the “rudest celebrity.” It turns out that when Siwa was an 11-year-old, she attended a red carpet for the Netflix series and asked Bure for a photo. Bure declined to take a picture with the dancer and proceeded to take photos with other people.

Bure reached out to Siwa to talk things out and they were able to clear it with Siwa saying she now understands the pressure of being on a red carpet but at a young age didn’t comprehend.

Bure’s comments were featured in a Wall Street Journal article where she reveals the reason she left Hallmark in favor of Great American Family.

“It basically is a completely different network than when I started because of the change of leadership,” she told the publication.

Her comments come as Hallmark diversifies its storytelling and is set to premiere its first holiday movie featuring a same-sex couple titled The Holiday Sitter. After Bure’s interview went viral GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) issued a statement inviting the actor to a conversation.

“It’s irresponsible and hurtful for Candace Cameron Bure to use tradition as a guise for exclusion,” GLAAD’s President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said. “I’d love to have a conversation with Bure about my wife, our kids, and our family’s traditions. Bure is out of sync with a growing majority of people of faith, including LGBTQ people of faith, who know that LGBTQ couples and families are deserving of love and visibility.”

Ellis said that Bure’s “statement is harmful and insulting to LGBTQ employees, as well as employees with LGBTQ friends and family.”

“If GAF’s plan is to intentionally exclude stories about LGBTQ couples, then actors, advertisers, cable and streaming platforms, and production companies should take note and seriously consider whether they want to be associated with a network that holds exclusion as one of its values,” Ellis concluded.

JoJo Siwa Breaks Silence on Encounter With Candace Cameron Bure

Noting that they had a “great conversation,” Candace shared the story behind why JoJo made the video: “She said, ‘You know, I met you at the Fuller House premiere and I was 11 years old. And we were all on the red carpet and I had come up to you and I said, ‘Can I have a picture with you?’ and you said to me, ‘Not right now,’ and then you proceeded to do what you were doing and take pictures with other people on the red carpet.'”

Although the two seem to be on good terms now, Candace still went on to issue a public apology to JoJo.

“I kind of broke your 11-year-old heart,” she said. “I didn’t take a picture with you. Ugh! I feel crummy, I feel—JoJo, I’m so sorry.”

Candace Cameron Bure explains JoJo Siwa calling her ‘rudest celebrity’

Siwa posted a video on TikTok over the weekend that went viral in which she shared a photo of Bure, but no details about how she was rude.

It had the internet trying to theorize what happened between the former “Dancing With the Stars” contestants that could have caused drama.

“I had no idea where it came from and so I immediately tried to reach out to her through a mutual friend,” Cameron Bure said. “My publicist contacted her manager and I DM’d her because I didn’t know what happened.”

CNN has reached out to Siwa for comment.

She said she was able to speak with Siwa and asked what had happened because as far as Cameron Bure could recall, they had had a “great” time meeting on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

Cameron Bure said the singer and former “Dance Moms” star was at first hesitant to tell her why she felt slighted by Cameron Bure since she was just participating in a TikTok trend and “didn’t think it was a big deal.”

But the “Fuller House” star said they kept talking.

“She said, ‘I met you at the Fuller House premiere when I was 11 years old, and we were all on the red carpet. I had come up to you and said, “Can I have a picture with you?” and you said to me, “Not right now.” And then proceeded to do what you were doing and take pictures with other people on the red carpet,'” Cameron Bure recalled Siwa explaining.

She said the now 19-year-old Siwa told her, “You weren’t even mean and I get it now, as an adult, when you’re on the red carpet and everything’s happening and you’re being pulled in different directions, but at that time I was 11.”

“I kind of broke your 11-year-old heart, I didn’t take a picture with you!” Cameron Bure said, adding, “I feel crummy. JoJo, I’m so sorry!”

Cameron Bure said it’s now “all good on the JoJo front.”

And she learned from it.

“I think that the lesson we can learn is to be mindful of no matter how many followers you have, even a 10 second trending TikTok video can do damage,” Cameron Bure said. “Because our words matter and our actions matter and whether you have 50 million followers or 500 followers or five followers, we all influence the people around us.”

Candace Cameron Bure Reacts to JoJo Siwa: “What Did I Do to You?”

According to Candace, JoJo said, “I get it now as an adult when you’re on the red carpet and everything’s happening and you’re being pulled in different directions, but, at the time, I was 11.”

Now that they’ve talked it out, Candace said that things are “all good on the JoJo front,” while also sharing “the lesson” she has taken away.

“I think that the lesson we can learn is to be mindful of no matter how many followers you have, even a 10 second trending TikTok video can do damage,” she said. “Because our words matter and our actions matter and whether you have 50 million followers or 500 followers or five followers, we all influence the people around us.”
