Julian Sands missing – latest news: Another hiker Jin Chung found alive on Mt Baldy where British actor disappeared

Julian Sands: Who is the Hollywood British actor missing in California?

The San Bernardino County’s rescue team has located the second hiker who went missing on the mountain where Julian Sands disappeared.

A 75-year-old hiker named Jin Chung was located on Tuesday (24 January).

“Jin suffered some weather-related injuries and a leg injury but was able to walk out with the assistance of the crew members,” the official statement read. “He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. No further information is currently available.”

In other news, Sands’ brother Nick has said that he knows “in my heart” that his sibling is no longer alive, as the search for the missing British actor entered its 11th day.

In comments to his local Yorkshire paper, the Craven Herald, Nick said: “He has not yet been declared missing, presumed dead, but I know in my heart that he has gone. However sibling rivalry being what it is, it would be just like him to walk out of there and prove me wrong.”

Sands was reported missing on 13 January, sparking a major search and rescue effort led by the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office.

The search effort was hampered by warnings of high winds near the San Gabriel Mountains, close to where Sands is believed to have gone missing.

Last week, Sands’ family released the last known images of him mountaineering, telling The Independent: “This is how he would love to be seen, doing what he loved best – a heroic mountaineer.”

Is the climate crisis behind a string of California hiker tragedies?

On a clear day, the peak of southern California’s 10,000ft Mount Baldy looms over the Los Angeles skyline.

The mountain is emblematic of a growing threat: the deadly impact of the climate crisis on one of America’s favourite pastimes, the great outdoors.

Two people have died and a third man, the British actor Julian Sands, is still missing after nearly a week.

The Independent’s Josh Marcus investigates the link between climbing accidents and climate.

‘It’s a tragedy for all of us’

“The climbing community kind of deals with this a lot, but it’s still a tragedy for all of us,” Gordon Janow, director of Alpine Ascents International, told The Independent.

Mr Janow said he would remember his friend of 20 years as a Renaissance man who was just as at home in the mountains as he was in front of the camera.

Efforts to find second missing hiker boosts ground search for Sands, say rescuers

It has emerged that a second hiker has gone missing in the Mt Baldy area – which sheriffs say has allowed ground crews a renewed opportunity to search for Julian Sands.

Jin Chung, 75, from Los Angeles has been missing since Sunday after last being seen at around 6am in a carpool to Mount Baldy with two others, the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department said.

A search was conducted overnight but the hiker wasn’t found. The search for Jin Chung was set to carry on Tuesday but without the aid of helicopters because of warnings of strong winds.

The agency revealed that the ground search for the 75-year-old has allowed crews a renewed opportunity to search for Mr Sands.

BTS star Jin begins military service in dawn of new era for K-pop supergroup

Yeoncheon, South Korea
CNN
 —

K-pop supergroup BTS entered a new era on Tuesday as Jin, its oldest member, began his mandatory military service amid tight security at an army training center in South Korea.

Jin, 30, will spend 18 months in uniform after crossing into the Yeoncheon army base in northern Gyeonggi province, where security staff and the media outnumbered a few hundred fans who had gathered to catch a glimpse of the star – ignoring his earlier pleas for them to stay away.

A motorcade of six black vans, which was assumed to carry Jin and his security staff, entered the base shortly before 2 p.m.

Numerous banners along the roadway welcomed Jin and the other recruits to the base, which is less than 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the Demilitarized Zone that separates South Korea from North Korea.

Among the conscripts joining the 5th Infantry Division Tuesday was Kim Seok-jin, 20, from Daejon – who shares the same full name as the superstar recruit.

Waiting outside a restaurant across from the base with his parents, Kim showed off his new buzz haircut – the same style Jin had gotten a few days earlier – and said he was nervous as he waited to go inside.

“But I’m excited too to go in with Jin,” he said, adding that he hoped they might become friends.

Among the BTS fans outside the base Tuesday was Lee Hey-Kyoung, a 40-year-old from Seoul, who combined subway, bus and taxi rides to make the trip to the base Tuesday morning.

“It’s a very cold winter and I’m thinking of him going to suffer in the military. That’s why I came here,” Lee said.

Nearby was Mandy Lee, who flew from Hong Kong to see Jin off.

“We wish him all the best and stay safe and healthy and we will wait him the 18 months,” she said.

Military service is compulsory in South Korea, where almost all able-bodied men are required to serve in the army for 18 months by the time they are 28 years old.

South Korea’s parliament passed a bill in 2020 allowing pop stars – namely those who “excel in popular culture and art” – to defer their service until the age of 30.

In October, BTS’ record label said that all seven members of the group were planning to undertake military service. BTS is expected to reconvene as a group around 2025, according to BIGHIT Music.

Jin’s service will begin with a five-week basic training course before being assigned to a unit, based on standard practice.

Park Si-woo, 23, who underwent training at the base in 2021, told CNN that Jin will likely find himself in barracks with about 40 other recruits sharing bunk beds.

Park said recruits will wake up around 6:30 a.m. to begin their daily routine, which involves physical workouts, plus combat and weapons training.

The recruits must give up their mobile phones, so Jin’s initial contact will be through letters that fans can submit online that will then be printed out and given to him. Military officials said Jin would get limited access to his cell phone at the weekend.

One thing Jin and the other recruits may appreciate is the food, Park said, adding: “We were given a lot of snacks during the training – beef jerky, butter waffle snacks, and drinks.”

Once integrated into South Korea’s forces, Jin will be one of about 560,000 army troops, according to the South Korean army website.

BTS have become worldwide superstars since debuting in 2013, earning No. 1 singles in more than 100 countries, more than 46 million followers on Twitter and awarded Time magazine’s Entertainer of the Year in 2020.

They have also become an important part of the South Korean economy – a 2019 study showed BTS was responsible for 0.3% of the country’s gross domestic product with $4.9 billion in revenue.

Critics say BTS is a one-of-a-kind phenomenon.

“BTS’ place in the scene is unique,” said music critic Yoonha Kim. “I think no more needs to be said. In fact, not only in the K-pop scene but looking at the entire Korean music history, no such group existed and it will be difficult for another to emerge in the future.”

BTS’s Jin to start mandatory military service in South Korea’s army

Comment

SEOUL — K-pop singer Jin, the oldest member of South Korean supergroup BTS, is starting his military service on Tuesday, making him the first in his band to do so — much to the grief of millions of his fans.

The process surrounding Jin’s entry into the army almost has the sense of a military operation as well, with authorities setting up a “situation room” to monitor any safety hazard posed by the crowds of fans expected to bid their superstar farewell.

Some 270 riot police have been deployed, and ambulances are on standby around the Key Recruit Training Center, where Jin enters boot camp at a front-line division in Yeoncheon County on the border with North Korea.

BTS’s Jin enlists: What to know about S. Korea’s mandatory military service

The enlistment of Korean celebrities often attracts fans and journalists trying to catch a glimpse of the stars before they leave the public eye for around two years.

BTS’s agency HYBE said on Monday that Jin, whose real name is Kim Seok-jin, will be driven into the military grounds without stopping for a send-off “in order to prevent any accident from crowding.”

The enrollment day at a training center is usually busy with recruits and their family members exchanging emotional goodbyes. The 30-year-old singer joins boot camp with a cohort of about 200 other conscripts, many of whom are younger than him.

All able-bodied South Korean men aged between 18 and 28 must serve at least 18 months in the country’s armed forces, but K-pop stars like Jin who are recognized by the government can defer their service until age 30.

Jin told the “BTS Army” — the official name of the boy band’s millions-strong fan base — to refrain from coming to his enrollment day. Despite his plea, fans are expected to show up and HYBE warned in a statement on Monday about possible overcrowding.

The K-pop heartthrob sent social media abuzz earlier when he revealed his freshly shaved head. The South Korean army maintains rigid grooming standards, including hair length regulations. “It’s cuter than I thought,” he said in a message posted on the Weverse fan community on Sunday.

Jin will undergo a physically demanding five-week basic training course before being assigned to a military unit. Army trainees learn basic skills such as how to march, shoot guns and throw a grenade.

The six other members of BTS are expected to fulfill their draft obligations based on individual timelines. BTS, hailed as the world’s biggest boy band, plans to reconvene as a group in 2025 after they complete their service.

Jin made his solo debut in October with the hit single “The Astronaut,” which sold more than a million copies.

BTS singer Jin set to begin South Korea military service, source says

Seoul, South Korea
CNN
 —

K-pop superstar Jin will begin his mandatory military service next month, a source with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed Friday, after the BTS singer appealed to the supergroup’s devoted fans to stay away from his South Korean army training center.

The source said the 29-year-old star, BTS’ oldest member, will enter service December 13 at Yeoncheon army base in the northern Gyeonggi province.

Jin’s service will begin with a five-week basic training course before being assigned to a unit, based on standard practice.

The move had been widely expected.

Last month, BTS’ record label said that all seven members of the group were planning to undertake military service and Jin – who turns 30 on December 4 – would be the first to enlist.

On Thursday, Jin posted a message on fan community app Weverse, urging fans not to visit the military training center to get a glimpse of him amid reports of his impending enlistment. He did not deny the reports in the post.

“Reports have come out against my will, but our ARMYs (BTS fans), should not come to the training center,” he wrote. “It could be dangerous because the place will be crowded with many people besides me who are coming. ARMY, I love you.”

BTS has been frequently compared to The Beatles, even breaking one of the English rock band’s records with three Billboard No. 1 albums in a single year.

Their devoted fan base calls themselves the “BTS Army,” propelling their music and coming to their defense on social media in 2019 when the group was shut out from Grammy nominations. They have been nominated for three Grammy Awards in 2023.

With their military service looming, BTS said in June it would press pause to pursue solo projects. The group is expected to reconvene in 2025, according to their record label.

BTS’s Jin Reported To Enlist In December + BIGHIT Briefly Comments

BTS’s agency has commented regarding Jin’s alleged enlistment date.

On November 24, industry representatives reported that Jin will enter the recruit training center in Yeoncheon County of Gyeonggi Province on December 13 and then receive his official assignment after completing basic training.

Regarding the reports, a source from BIGHIT MUSIC briefly commented, “It is difficult to confirm. We ask for your generous understanding.”

It was previously announced in October that Jin would request to cancel the delay of his military enlistment and then follow the enlistment process of the Military Manpower Administration.

Stay tuned for updates!

BTS Members to Undertake Military Service in South Korea, With Jin Set to Be First

SEOUL—The eldest member of the South Korean boy band BTS will be conscripted for the country’s mandatory military service later this year, ending a debate over whether the singers’ cultural achievements should merit an exemption.

The 29-year-old

Kim Seok-jin

—who goes by the stage name “Jin” to fans—had until his December birthday to begin his mandatory military service of 18 months. His start date had already been pushed back two years, following an amendment to South Korea’s conscription law in 2020 designed with the BTS group in mind.

That reprieve had allowed Mr. Kim to delay his military service until he turned 30. On Monday, Mr. Kim, through his management agency

HYBE,

said he would initiate steps to join the military as soon as his schedule for his solo release is concluded at the end of October. The other six members of the group plan to carry out their military service based on their own individual plans,

HYBE

said in a statement.

“Both the company and the members of BTS are looking forward to reconvening as a group again around 2025 following their service commitment,” HYBE said.

BTS—short for their Korean name

Bangtan Sonyeondan,

which they alter in English to “Beyond the Scene”—is one of the world’s most popular bands. Their devoted fans around the world officially go by the name ARMY.

Members of BTS arrived for the annual Grammy Awards in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Mr. Kim’s conscription announcement comes after the group held a free concert in South Korea’s southern port city of Busan on Saturday to help promote the country’s bid to host the World Expo in 2030.

In June, the group had also announced that they would be taking time to focus on releasing music as solo acts, citing struggles to create new music in order to live up to the expectations of their fans. The news sent HYBE shares tumbling by nearly 25% at the time—marking the company’s worst single-day decline since it went public in October 2020.

The weekend concert in Busan was widely expected to be the last involving all of the members of the K-pop boy band, as discussions around the South Korean government potentially exempting BTS from the mandatory military service had failed to reach a conclusion.

In social-media posts, fans of the K-pop band expressed a mix of sadness, resignation and acceptance over the news the group would begin military service. Many fans said BTS prepared them for a day like this when they announced they would be taking a break to focus on solo work. Other members of the ARMY said they were already looking forward to the new material the band would release when their time in the military ends.

South Korean legislators had been discussing the possibility of amending the local conscription law since last year without taking action.

In South Korea, all able-bodied men must serve in the military for at least 18 months, though the length of the service may vary by the type of post. The draft starts from the age of 18, though men can postpone until 28, with those in the entertainment profession permitted to postpone conscription until the age of 30.

BTS, which formed in 2013, was the first K-pop act to top the U.S. album chart and has produced a series of No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. They have sold out U.S. stadiums for their massive, global fan base and appeared on “Saturday Night Live.”

Earlier this year, BTS visited the White House where they discussed discrimination against the Asian community with President Biden. Fans lined up outside of the White House to try to get a glimpse of the band during the meeting.

BTS is the crown jewel of HYBE, which last year said it would acquire U.S.-based Ithaca Holdings to bring artists such as

Justin Bieber

and

Ariana Grande

under its roof.

To Jin Yong Is A Wuxia Martial Arts Game That Looks Great

Today, a Chinese AAA studio announced that it would be adapting a famous wuxia novel series into a martial arts game. The demo trailer showed off stylish combat that heavily incorporates exaggerated aerial movements, which are a common hallmark of wuxia cinema but which I’ve rarely seen so gracefully replicated in games! In most action games, characters dodge and block attacks with both feet on the ground. Code: To Jin Yong lets you jump impractical distances simply because it’s cool.

Code: To Jin Yong – The First Unreal Engine 5 Game of LightSpeed Studios

The game is being developed by Lightspeed Studios, which is owned by Tencent and previously worked on the mobile ports for Apex Legends and PUBG. Code: To Jin Tong will be developed in Unreal Engine 5, which Tencent says will allow the developers to realize fantastical martial arts movements through the engine’s advanced physics system. From what the reveal trailer indicates, even the environment seems very responsive to the player’s actions. The individual leaves move according to the characters’ attacks, rather than being a canned special effect that plays whenever a specific move is executed. And I’ll be very happy if the camera movements seen in the trailer remain just as dynamic when the game finally launches.

And that’s a big if. The developers have only released AAA games for mobile, and the trailer acknowledges that the trailer “does not reflect the quality of the final product.” Tencent has not announced a release date, so we might still be several years away from being able to play the first wuxia game developed in Unreal Engine 5.

As previously reported, the Chinese game development scene is moving again as regulatory agencies start to approve more projects for domestic releases. But licenses are difficult to obtain even for gaming behemoths like Tencent, so AAA studios have started to focus on more premium experiences. Moreover, publishers are also looking to release games beyond just the domestic market. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and Black Myth: Wukong are two other examples of premium Chinese games that have been announced during this push.
