Bucks vs. Celtics score: Jayson Tatum’s 41 points (and monster dunk) leads Boston past Milwaukee

BOSTON — The Boston Celtics got the gift they were wishing for this Christmas. Their once unstoppable offense, which had disappeared over the last few weeks, finally showed up again. Led by 41 points from Jayson Tatum and 29 points from Jaylen Brown, the Celtics ran away from the Bucks in the second half for a 139-118 win.

Tatum helped the Celtics seize control of the game foor good in the third quarter with a magnificent 20-point frame. He scored from all over the floor, not just in the third, but all night long. The Bucks simply had no answer for his array of jumpers and drives, which he supplemented with 10 trips to the free throw line. He finished with 41 points, seven rebounds and five assists on 14-of-22 from the field for his fifth consecutive 30-point game.

The Celtics also caught fire from downtown, something they have not been able to do for the better part of two weeks. They made eight 3s in the first quarter alone, including a heave at the buzzer by Sam Hauser, and finished 19-of-39 from behind the arc. This was the 10th time they’ve made at least 19 3s in a game this season.

Giannis Antetokounmpo finished with 27 points and nine rebounds to lead the Bucks, but this was a rough outing for the two-time MVP. Much like they did in the playoffs, the Celtics made him work for every single point, holding him to 9-of-22 from the field. Even the shots he did hit were primarily jumpers.

Jayson Tatum demands to guard Paolo Banchero: ‘That’s how you show respect’

ORLANDO — Jayson Tatum looked visibly irritated. Borderline furious.

With three minutes left in the second quarter, the Celtics had already given up 60 points to a young Magic team. Paolo Banchero, the top pick in the most recent NBA Draft, had just driven straight past Noah Vonleh for a bucket and a foul. Though Banchero had started inefficiently from the field, he was starting to build more rhythm against Boston’s big men.

Tatum wanted to shut that off. He wanted to wake up his Celtics teammates. And he wanted to keep his team undefeated. So, as Banchero stood on the free throw line, Tatum demanded to guard the young Magic star.

“I ain’t ask for permission,” Tatum said after his team’s 126-120 win.

Tatum didn’t need to ask. When he made his feelings known, the Celtics bent to his wishes. He started the next Orlando possession attached to Banchero on the low block. When Banchero touched the ball one play later, Tatum picked him up at half court and hounded him. After sticking with Banchero through multiple dribble moves, Tatum stripped the ball from Banchero and knocked it out of bounds off Banchero’s leg.

The play seemed to energize the Celtics, who ended the half on a 10-4 spurt before building another run at the start of the third quarter.

“We kind of let them be comfortable,” Tatum said. “Regardless of who it is, any NBA player that’s comfortable and they hit shots, they start playing with confidence, and then you’re in for a ballgame. And that’s what happened tonight. And I felt like they were just too comfortable in the beginning. So I decided to guard him. I take pride in defense, as we all do.”

Even in a road arena, Tatum left the Amway Center court to M-V-P chants after finishing with 40 points on 14-for-21 shooting. As well as he scored the ball, the insistence on defending Banchero did more to show off Tatum’s early-season mindset. On the second leg of a back-to-back, he could have let the Celtics coast but refused to let them settle for a weak effort. In some ways, he wasn’t just setting the tone for Saturday night, but for the entire season. With one demand, Tatum made it clear that every game matters to him. That he won’t stand for any slippage. That the finals loss has shaped his approach to this season and convinced him to take everything seriously.

Tatum went on to score nine points over the first 2:31 of the third quarter, further giving the Celtics control. They weren’t able to pull away from the Magic but felt more pleased about their execution in the second half.

“Just better ball pressure,” said Joe Mazzulla. “Our pickup points. I thought we did a great job in the second half of picking up our pressure and just playing that way consistently.”

Malcolm Brogdon agreed.

“Super important (win),” Brogdon said. “This is a young team we played tonight, but they’re talented. But they don’t have a lot of expectations as far as winning. So it was important that we got this win. This was, I think, a more important win even than the Miami win, just to show that we’re mature, experienced, and ready to take that next step this year.”

Mazzulla actually sounded happy the Celtics experienced a bumpier ride against Orlando. After two charmed wins to open the regular season, against two quality opponents, he wanted the players to understand that some nights will be more challenging. Sometimes another team will play a great game. Sometimes the Celtics just won’t have their best stuff. During those games, they will still need to find their way back to who they want to be. Mazzulla thought the Celtics showed “great leadership” by picking up their physicality after the slow defensive start.

“Just because we had two good games, we can’t create this expectation that things are always going to go our way,” Mazzulla said. “And that we’re always going to feel comfortable. It’s not going to be that way. I thought our guys did a great job of staying even-keeled, poised. They challenged each other. And we know exactly what we need to do. I think part of a great team is building an awareness to when are we playing well and when are we not, and then how do we get back to being ourselves. And I thought we did a great job of that at halftime.”

Mazzulla called Blake Griffin’s second-half dive after a loose ball the highlight of the game. Derrick White scored 27 points, including a rare dunk that surprised some of his teammates. Tatum had help in changing the tide but knew the Celtics needed his energy. For him, the move showed off growing assertiveness. He almost certainly would not have demanded to guard a player early in his career but understands now how much his actions can impact the rest of the Celtics. That’s the power of stardom, for better and worse.

Tatum didn’t always stop Banchero, who is viewed as a budding star. The two know each other pretty well. As a fellow Duke product, Tatum said he has “spoken frequently” to Banchero and has been “extremely happy” to see the 19-year-old rookie’s success. Noting Banchero’s rare combination of height, bulk, and ability to “do everything on the floor,” Tatum said he thinks highly of the youngster not just as a player but as a person. That just didn’t matter to Tatum once the Celtics started wobbling Saturday. He knew he needed to do something to revive his team’s defense. With the Celtics in their worst defensive stretch of the young season, Tatum shifted over to defend Banchero.

“That’s how you show respect,” Tatum said. “I’m not going to let it be easy. I’m going to compete. You’ve gotta go at somebody regardless of if he’s 19 or 30. Nobody took it easy on me my first year.”

Nobody will take it easy on Tatum now. That’s OK. In most cases, he’s the one who sets the terms of the challenge these days.

Jayson Tatum says he played with fractured wrist vs. Warriors in NBA Finals

By his standards, Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum had a disappointing NBA Finals against the Warriors.

Tatum, the Celtics’ leading scorer during the 2021-22 regular season, struggled at times against the Warriors in the six-game series. The three-time NBA All-Star averaged 21.5 points during the Finals, second to Jaylen Brown’s 23.5.

More than two months after the Warriors won the NBA championship at TD Garden, Tatum revealed that he played through an injury for the entirety of the playoffs.

“It showed that I had a non-displaced fracture in my [left] wrist,” Tatum told Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks during a live interview Sunday.

“A non-displaced chip, so like I chipped a bone but it didn’t leave the surface, right? But it had shown that the bone had grown over it, so it had healed, but … I was still in pain because I kept getting hit or falling on it. So I guess I played with somewhat of a fracture for like two months.”

Tatum, who shot 45. 3 percent from the field during the 2021-22 regular season, saw that number fall to 36.7 percent during the six games against the Warriors. In the final game of the series, Tatum managed to score just 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the field.

Tatum admitted that he aggravated the injury during the playoffs, but received treatment in order to continue playing.

“And then in the playoffs, there was a play against Milwaukee in Game 3,” Tatum told Rooks. “I dunked it. Giannis [Antetokounmpo] chased me down and fouled me and I fell into the crowd. And that was the most painful it’s been since that day that I hurt it. And I end up getting a cortisone shot in my wrist that night and you can see it. I’ve lost color in my hand because it kills the fat cells and there’s not a lot of fat in my hand, so I’ve lost color right there.

“But after each game, I would have to wear a brace, to shootaround, and I would take it off before the cameras saw me. And then pregame, taking my nap and putting it back on, just to make sure it was stable.”

It’s unclear if Tatum had any sort of procedure on his wrist this offseason.

At that point in the season, most players are dealing with some sort of injury. For what it’s worth, Steph Curry aggravated a foot injury during Game 3 of the Finals. He played in Game 4 and authored one of the most iconic performances of his career, scoring a game-high 43 points to keep the Warriors from falling into a three-games-to-one hole. With the series even, Golden State went on to win the next two games to capture its fourth NBA title in eight seasons.

RELATED: Tatum was “miserable” after Celtics’ Finals loss

Tatum, 24, is one of the best young players in the NBA and there’s no doubt that he will be healthy when the 2022-23 NBA season begins in mid-October.

With both the Warriors and Celtics bringing back rosters that are mostly the same from last year, there’s a good chance they could meet again in the Finals next July, giving Tatum a chance to redeem himself.

Jayson Tatum responds to Celtics reportedly offering Jaylen Brown in package for Nets’ Kevin Durant

USATSI

Not long after a report surfaced that the Boston Celtics had offered Jaylen Brown in a package to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for disgruntled star forward Kevin Durant, Celtics forward Jayson Tatum made it clear that he’s happy with the team’s roster as currently constructed.

“I played with [Durant] during the Olympics,” Tatum said while speaking to media members at the premiere of the Showtime documentary ‘Point Gods.’ “Obviously, he’s a great player, but that’s not my decision. I love our team. I love the guys that we got.

“We got two new pieces [in Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari],” he added. “I love our team. I just go out there and play with my teammates. I don’t put that [general manager] hat on to make decisions.”

Tatum also questioned the veracity of the report, pointing out the fact that similar reports have been incorrect in the past.

“I don’t know if that report is true or not… I don’t believe everything I see on TV,” Tatum said. “I’ve seen some [expletive] on me that was a lie. You never really know what’s true or what’s not true.”

You can see Tatum’s full comments below:

Given the fact that Tatum made these comments publicly, it’s possible that they don’t reflect how he truly feels about the situation. After all, he’s unlikely to say, “Yeah, I want the team to trade away Jaylen Brown,” even if he actually does. But at the same time, Tatum has reason to be happy with Boston’s roster as currently constructed.

The team was only two wins away from winning a championship last month, and they’ve improved on paper over the offseason with the additions of Brodgon and Gallinari. It’s genuinely possible that Tatum doesn’t want to see the roster altered in a major way after the success they had last season.

Ultimately though, the decision is out of Tatum’s hands. If Boston’s front office wants him badly enough and is willing to meet the exceedingly steep asking price, then perhaps Durant will begin next season in a Celtics uniform.

Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum on Game 4 struggles

BOSTON — Jayson Tatum had a simple solution for the Boston Celtics to bounce back with a win in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday night — he just needs to play better.

“I mean, I give [the Golden State Warriors] credit,” Tatum said after Boston’s 107-97 loss to Golden State in Game 4 at TD Garden on Friday night knotted the series at 2-2. “They’re a great team. They’re playing well. They got a game plan, things like that.

“But it’s on me. I got to be better. I know I’m impacting the game in other ways, but I got to be more efficient, shoot the ball better, finish at the rim better.

“I take accountability for that.”

Tatum has not played to the standard he has set for himself in this series. He is shooting 34% from the field, and although he has passed the ball beautifully in Boston’s two wins, compiling 22 assists and four turnovers, he has nine assists and 10 turnovers in their two losses.

Tatum, along with the rest of the Celtics, short-circuited in the fourth quarter Friday night, making just two shots over the final seven minutes. That allowed Golden State to close the game with a 21-6 run, flipping the outcome in its favor to even the series.

“We obviously felt like we put ourselves in the position to win the game,” said Tatum, who was 1-for-5 in the fourth quarter. “There’s a lot of things we wish we would have done differently, especially on the offensive end. I think we just got way too stagnant late in the fourth from everybody.”

All of that, however, starts with Tatum, who earned MVP honors in the Eastern Conference finals and is the face of the Celtics franchise. He has been shown as the opposite number of Warriors star Stephen Curry throughout this series, but on the court Curry has been peerless.

That was certainly the case in Game 4, when Curry had 43 points, 10 rebounds and four assists and dominated every second he was on the court. Tatum’s night, meanwhile, was emblematic of Boston’s poor decision-making for much of the game. He had five turnovers and was a big part of the team’s stagnant offense down the stretch.

Asked if he is putting too much pressure on himself, Tatum said no and that he just has to be better.

“I think that’s just as simple as it is,” he said. “I just got to be better. I know I can be better, so it’s not like I, myself or my team is asking me to do something I’m not capable of. They know the level and I know the level that I can play at.

“It’s kind of on me to do that more often than not just to help my team in the best way that I can. It’s not too much pressure at all. It’s kind of like my job.”

When asked what he has seen from Tatum so far in this series, Celtics coach Ime Udoka pointed to his hunting for fouls instead of trying to finish through contact.

“At times he’s looking for fouls,” Udoka said. “They are a team that loads up in certain games. He’s finding the outlets. Shooting over two, three guys. That’s the balance of being aggressive and picking your spots and doing what he’s done in previous games, which is kicked it out and got wide-open looks.

“That’s the ongoing theme, so to speak. Him getting to the basket, being a scorer as well as a playmaker. They do a good job with their rotations. Sometimes hunting fouls instead of going to finish. I’ve seen that in a few games so far.”

Moving forward, what the Celtics need to see is the Tatum who showed up time and time again in big spots earlier in these playoffs, such as his 46-point effort in Milwaukee in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals to stave off elimination against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the defending champion Bucks.

A similar performance in Game 5 in San Francisco on Monday night could allow Boston a chance to close this series out back in Boston next Thursday in Game 6.

Tatum said he remains confident he and the Celtics can bounce back.

“We don’t do this s— on purpose,” Tatum said. “I promise you we don’t. We’re trying as hard as we can. There’s certain things we got to clean up. Obviously turnovers, movement on the offensive end. Would we have liked to have won today and be up 3-1? That would have been best-case scenario.

“But it’s the Finals. The art of competition, they came here feeling like they had to win. It wasn’t easy. I think that’s kind of the beauty of it, that it’s not going to be easy. It shouldn’t be.

“We know we both want it, and we got to go take it.”

Celtics-Warriors score, takeaways: Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum lead Boston to Game 3 win

The Boston Celtics have retaken the lead in the 2022 NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors. At home for the first time in the series, the Celtics pulled away from the Warriors for a 116-100 win in Game 3 on Wednesday night. Boston, up 2-1 in the Finals, withstood a third-quarter charge from Golden State, and put the game away in the fourth quarter. Jaylen Brown (27 points), Jayson Tatum (26) and Marcus Smart (24), combined for 77 points to lead the Celtics, who led by as many as 18 points in the first half.

Stephen Curry scored a game-high 31 points on 12-of-22 shooting and had 15 in the third quarter as the Warriors momentarily held the lead. Klay Thompson had his best game of the series, adding 25 points, but it was not enough. Draymond Green struggled, scoring just two points and adding three assists before fouling out in the fourth quarter

Boston is now 7-0 following a loss in the playoffs. Golden State, meanwhile, is also unbeaten in the 2022 postseason following a defeat, and the Warriors have won at least one road game in their past 26 playoff series. Game 4 is set for Friday night in Boston.

Here are three key takeaways from Game 3.

Celtics’ balanced attack withstands Warriors surge

Here’s a fun stat to show just how impressive Boston’s Game 3 win was: Tatum, Brown and Smart are the first trio to each have 20 points, five assists and five rebounds in a Finals game since 1984, per ESPN Stats and Info. The last trio to do that, oh just the Showtime Lakers with Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Cooper.

Brown got things started early for the Celtics, putting up 17 first-quarter points to ignite Boston’s home crowd and help the C’s jump out to an early lead. He was knocking in 3s, getting to the free-throw line and working in some mid-range jumpers to show Golden State the entirety of his offensive skillset. Though Brown did a bulk of his damage in the first quarter — as he scored just 10 points over the next three quarters — it didn’t matter because Smart and Tatum took the baton from him for the rest of the game. Smart’s performance was especially noteworthy, given his two-point dud in Game 2. He was getting to the rim with ease and had some favorable rolls from beyond the arc to help Boston maintain its edge in crucial moments.

But it wasn’t just the Big 3 of Tatum, Brown and Smart who got it done for the Celtics. Grant Williams gave Boston huge minutes off the bench, putting together his best performance in this series with 10 points and five rebounds. The same is true for Robert Williams III, who was just two points shy of a double-double (eight points, 10 boards). Though Robert Williams has been battling a lingering knee injury, he still looked spry on the floor, finishing with four blocks on the night. With him patrolling around the rim, the Warriors were limited to just 26 points in the paint, a steep drop off from the 40 points they generated in Game 2.

Though the Celtics almost let things fall apart in the third quarter — again — they managed to withstand a huge performance from Curry to take the 2-1 series lead.

Warriors lost, but Klay might be back

Entering Game 3, Thompson joked about what he would do to get his shooting touch back for this series. After all, he was shooting just 30.3 percent from the field, and was 4 of 15 on 3s.

“Gosh, probably just YouTube ‘Game 6 Klay’ because there were some very high-pressurized situations I was in,” Thompson said. “I ended up shooting the ball well. When you can do it when your back is against the wall, you can do it at any given moment. It’s just about keeping that mental strong.”

I’m not sure if Thompson actually loaded up some of his greatest hits from the playoffs prior to Wednesday’s game, but whatever he did, it certainly worked. Thompson shot 41.2 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from deep to finish with 25 points. He was punishing the Celtics every time one of their bigs went into drop coverage on pick-and-rolls, and showed he could create for himself in the arc as well.

The only problem, though, is that even his bounce-back performance wasn’t enough to lift the Warriors to a win. However, while Golden State still lost, seeing Thompson heat up in Game 3 should be an encouraging sign for the Warriors going forward.

Curry’s potential injury could change the series

Late in the fourth quarter, players from both teams were diving to the ground for a loose ball. By the time the whistle was blown and everyone had gathered themselves, Curry was still on the ground wincing in pain. He slowly got up and was limping around and remained in the game, but he didn’t look the same after that incident. The replay showed that Horford had inadvertently fallen on Curry’s leg amongst the scramble on the floor. After the game, Curry said he had pain in his foot, but was hopeful he could play in Game 4.

Here’s a look at the play:

After the game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr declined to give any specifics, saying “We’ll know more (Thursday).”

Thompson also chimed in on Curry’s injury: “Steph’s gonna do everything in his power to play. I really hope he’s OK because he’s our identity.”

Thompson hit it right on the head. Curry has been the undisputed MVP for the Warriors throughout the playoffs, and even in Game 3, his 15-point third-quarter performance was the reason Golden State was back in this game. We’ll have to wait to see what the Warriors say about any potential injury, but if Curry isn’t 100 percent healthy going forward, then Golden State will be in trouble. The fact that Curry will only get one day off between now and Friday’s Game 4 only makes matters worse for any needed recovery time.
