Why Jake Paul thinks PPV sales ‘tanked’ for Anderson Silva fight

Jake Paul is not expecting his fight with Anderson Silva to do huge numbers.

Paul defeated the UFC legend by unanimous decision in their boxing match this past Saturday at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Ariz., even scoring a knockdown in Round 8. Not only was it Paul’s most impressive win to date, it was an entertaining back-and-forth scrap.

But the YouTube star doesn’t think the pay-per-view numbers will accurately reflect that and explained why.

“The pre-buys were going crazy,” Paul said on a recent episode of IMPAULSIVE. “Up, up, up. And on Wednesday, when the news came out about Anderson saying that he got knocked out or whatever, and the fight was in jeopardy, and all this press came out, the pre-buys tanked all the way down. The general public sees that and is like, ‘Oh, it’s not happening.’ Tommy (Fury) pulled out, Hasim (Rahman Jr.) pulled out, ‘Oh, Jake f*cking Paul can’t get an event together. This is done.’ It killed ticket sales. Boom, boom, boom, we’re still selling tickets that day. Everything went to zero. …

“I think it will probably go around 200 to 300K, which is kind of upsetting.”

Details emerged during fight week that Silva was knocked out while sparring the week before the fight, which “The Spider” later clarified was lost in translation. Paul also said the timing of the fight wasn’t ideal, sharing the same weekend as Halloween and major sporting events.

“Halloween, World Series, Sunday football – this is the worst time in the year to fight,” Paul said. “But guess what: I had to fight. All my fights from now on will be in the summer. There’s no sports. There’s like this perfect gap in July, early August where there’s no sports. And by the way, all my other fights were during COVID when no one had anything to do and anything to watch. … I had to fight this year. I just had to get it f*cking done. I’m sick and tired of waiting around.”

Jake Paul outlasts Anderson Silva in back-and-forth boxing clash

What will they say about Jake Paul now?

Heading into Saturday night’s Showtime headliner, the prevailing notion was that the YouTube star-turned-boxer would face his toughest challenge in former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. The fight was more action-packed than anyone could’ve expected, with Silva pushing Paul as much as he could. In the end, Paul outlasted Silva and won a unanimous decision at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Ariz., with the judges scoring the fight 77-74, 78-73, 78-73 in his favor.

“They’re going to find something to say, ‘Fight a real boxer,”‘ Paul said afterward. “B*tch, I tried. Hey, if I were walking on water, people would say that I can’t swim. There’s always going to be haters. There’s always going to be critics. It’s there. It’s everyday, part of life if you’re doing something and being successful. So I don’t worry about that sh*t. This is just the start, baby.”

Based on the first round alone, the fight should’ve been slow and calculated as Silva came out relaxed and didn’t throw a lot while Paul pushed the action. That all changed in Round 2, though, when Silva ramped things up to another level and took Paul out of his comfort zone. The mental warfare was on, with Silva landing and taunting Paul on more than one occasion.

As the fight wore on, the brutality increased. At times, Paul and Silva fought in a phone booth, something Paul hadn’t done in his previous fights with former MMA champions Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley.

Silva’s best punch of the night was his inside uppercut, while Paul found success with three-punch combos upstairs and downstairs and continuously looked to a land a big overhand right – which he did a few times, but Silva was able to take them.

That is, until the eighth and final round. Silva came out with a sense of urgency, blitzing and throwing in bunches. But 30 seconds in, Paul finally found his big punch and dropped Silva to the canvas. Even after the knockdown, Silva still plodded forward. As much as he pushed, Silva couldn’t find his one punch in the final frame.

It wasn’t a bad showing for the 47-year-old Silva. But the 25-year-old Paul was just better.

“Listen, it’s tough to come inside here and fight with a young kid,” Silva said. “I tried to do my best. I’m training hard every day. Jake is better than me today. I don’t have anything bad to say about my opponent. I think everybody needs to respect this kid, because he’s doing the best job.”

And now Paul can look toward a showdown with former UFC star Nate Diaz, which has been talked about for months and is cleared to happen now that Diaz is a free agent.

“I want Nate Diaz, who’s a b*tch,” Paul said. “He tried to come into my locker room. He tried to cause some sh*t. Then he always leaves the f*cking arena. So Nate Diaz, stop being a b*tch and fight me.”

YouTuber Jake Paul CANCELS boxing match against Tommy Fury

Jake Paul has cancelled his boxing match with Tommy Fury after claiming the half-brother of Tyson Fury ‘wasn’t interested and literally went into hiding’.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer was due to go head-to-head with Fury on August 6 at Madison Square Garden, but doubts over their fight started to creep in when the Brit was banned from travelling to America for their press conference.

Paul has since taken to Twitter to announce that he and his team had issued Fury with a termination notice after doing ‘everything’ they could to arrange the fight.

Jake Paul has cancelled his boxing match with Tommy Fury after claiming the brother of Tyson Fury ‘wasn’t interested and literally went into hiding’

Paul took to Twitter to say: ‘Fury’s received a termination notice. MVP [Most Valuable Promotions] did everything it could 2 help him & team. He wasn’t interested & he literally went into hiding.

‘2nd time in a row he has pulled out. 2nd time in a row I’m going to step up & take on a new opponent on short notice. AUG 6. MSG.’

The pair were supposed to settle their rivalry back in December at the Amalie Arena in Florida, but Fury had to pull out with a broken rib and a chest infection.

As a result, their fight was rescheduled for August 6 at Madison Square Garden. However, Fury faced a stumbling block when trying to enter into America.

Fury was set to fly to the United States for a press conference to promote their fight but was denied entry.

Paul’s fight with Fury was scheduled to go ahead at Madison Square Garden on August 6

Fury filmed a video explaining why he had not been able to get on his flight to the United States to promote the fight last month.

He said: ‘[I wanted to] come on here and set the record straight before anybody else tries to.

‘Me and my team this morning arrived at Heathrow Airport ready for the press conference, ready to fly out.

‘And as soon as I entered the airport I got pulled to one side and I was told by the Homeland Security officer that was there that my ESTA had been denied and I wasn’t able to travel to the USA for a reason that I apparently know.

‘I can stand here and I say I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong and I have no clue why I’m not allowed to travel to the USA.’

‘I’ve been training for a fight this whole time and that’s all I’ve been doing. I have no clue why they will not allow me to travel today and neither does any of my team or my lawyers.

‘So now I’m having to go to the embassies and all this sort of stuff, trying to resolve it and I’m in the middle of training, guys, I don’t know why this has happened today – it is a massive shock to me and my whole team.

However, Fury was denied entry into America ahead of their press conference last month

Paul gave fans an update of the situation regarding Fury – claiming his opponent was hiding

‘Obviously it is a matter that needs to be resolved, it is government issues, it’s a lot bigger than the fight right now and I’m trying to get it sorted but I just wanted to let you all know where it was at.’

In response to the setback in their efforts to face each other, Paul furiously tweeted: ‘Tommy, no matter how hard you try to get out of this fight, I’m going to do everything in my power to not let you weasel your way out.

‘My team and my partners have made it clear the steps you need to take to solve your latest excuse. Take them or admit you’re a scared little b****.’

Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions also confirmed in a statement that the press conference had to be postponed due to the situation regarding Fury.

The statement read: ‘Despite many assurances by Tommy Fury’s team that he was able to come to the US, and knowing that Tommy was in California just last month, we were surprised to learn that he had an issue at Heathrow Airport on Monday.

‘As a result of circumstances out of our control, the scheduled press conference for Wednesday at MSG has been postponed.

‘We are working with our partners at SHOWTIME and Madison Square Garden and will share more information as soon as we are able.’

Paul gave Fury a deadline for sorting his travel issues out before calling off the fight

Paul took to Twitter once again on June 30 to update fans on the situation – claiming Fury was ‘hiding’.

He said: ‘Tommy Fury is hiding. B***h made. Tyson Fury lawyer never got back to my team on setting up escrow for our $1M bet. ‘Never believed in his brother. Instructed my team to do a Hova (Jay-Z) and move On To The Next One.’

He shared an accompanying video in which he was heard saying: ‘We have spoken to Tommy Fury’s lawyers, they’re all advising him to just go to the embassy to get his visa.

‘That’s all he has to do. But Tommy is showing no urgency, he hasn’t gone yet, he’s not communicating with us on what he’s doing.

‘This is another case of Tommy Fumbles just being scared to fight me. I think that’s what this is. I think the Fury family’s trying to manipulate something to get me to fight in the UK.

‘You want me to fight in the UK? Show me $15million. Because, here in America, we do more PPV buys, more ticket sales and more sponsorships.

Fury is yet to respond to the notice but Paul is already preparing for a fight against heavyweight Hasim Rahman Jr (pictured together above)

‘I’ve shown you the money, we’re ready to go. MSG, August 6th. Tommy, you’re going to miss the biggest pay day of your life because you want me to go to the UK?

‘I’ll come there just show me the money but you can’t do that. This is embarrassing. Go to the embassy, get your visa, stop ducking me and stop wasting my time.’

Paul subsequently gave Fury a deadline – claiming the fight would be called off if he had not attended the American embassy before Wednesday morning.

He Tweeted: ‘Tommy is officially out by Wednesday morning if he doesn’t go to the embassy/come out of hiding,’ Paul tweeted. Three other opponents lined up. I’m built different.’

With the Wednesday deadline having passed, Paul took to social media once again to announce that he had issued Fury with a ‘termination notice’.

Fury is yet to respond to the notice but Paul is already planning for a fight against heavyweight Hasim Rahman Jr.

While Rahman Jr hasn’t fought many big names while building a 12-1 record, his father famously knocked out Lennox Lewis to take the world heavyweight championship in 2001 in one of the biggest upsets the sport had seen for years.

Dana White responds to Jake Paul’s UFC salvo: ‘You’re too stupid’

The Dana White-Jake Paul feud continues on.

After the celebrity boxer issued a list of demands for better working conditions for UFC fighters, White responded with a video Saturday night dumping on Paul, and his proposal.

“Nobody on earth thinks you really wrote that,” White said. “You’re too stupid.”

White insinuated that the proposal, which called for long-term healthcare, fighters receiving a 50 percent share of UFC revenue and a massive increase in minimum pay, came from Paul’s manager, who he compared to a “warlock.”

“That guy used to be an accountant for me,” White said. “And let’s just say this: he no longer works for me and I think he’s a scumbag. But if you two think that you can do it better than we do, we’re doing this whole thing wrong, you can treat the fighters better than we do, knock yourself out. Start your own business.

“It’s easy to do. Get the warlock on it. The warlock can get it started for you. What you and the warlock should be focused on is your business. You’re tanking.”

Paul has been trying to get Jorge Masvidal or Nate Diaz away from UFC to box him, which White would need to agree to. The feud started when Paul repeatedly said White uses cocaine. White said he would be randomly tested for the next 10 years if Paul would agree to be tested for steroids for two years.

Paul responded by issuing the aforementioned list of demands.

“Jake, you never responded to the challenge,” White said. “You publicly stated that I use cocaine. I do not. … I believe that you’re a cheater, and I believe that you use steroids.”

Paul, a YouTube star, is 5-0 as a boxer, though none of his opponents have been professional boxers. He issued a video response Sunday morning in which he said, “steroid test me whenever the f–k you want.”

Jake Paul responds to Dana White’s rant with counteroffer

Jake Paul caught wind of Dana White’s press conference on Tuesday and issued a retort to the UFC president.

Paul, a YouTube sensation-turned-boxer, was once again the target of White’s verbal scorn following this week’s Dana White’s Contender Series event.

White said he doesn’t think Paul will pursue a boxing match with former UFC champion Anderson Silva, who has pulled off a pair of highly publicized boxing wins over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Tito Ortiz since parting ways with the promotion.

“I f*cking guarantee you this: You ain’t gonna see Jake Paul calling Anderson Silva out. That I f*cking promise you,” White said. “(Silva is) his size, and he’s actually good. He’s old, which is what Jake Paul likes to fight old guys. He likes to fight old guys that are too small and that are absolutely, positively washed up.”

The push for Paul vs. Silva came adjacent to White essentially putting the kibosh on any possibility of Jorge Masvidal being lent out of his UFC contract for a boxing bout. Paul has been feuding with “Gamebred” in the media, going back to the days prior to his August win over Tyron Woodley, and both said they would like the grudge match to happen.

Paul appears to still be fixated on Masvidal and after White’s comments, he issued a counteroffer to make the fight come to fruition (via Twitter):

“Anderson’s out … JAKE JAKE JAKE..”

I want your star talent. Your “in their prime” strikers so I can exploit their lack of Boxing ability.

So let’s do this Me vs. Jorge Masvidal and Amanda Serrano vs. Amanda Nunes…

If we win, you let any of your fighters fight me going forward. If we lose, I leave you and your exploitive business along.

DANA…DANA….DANA?

White did not appear to have any interest in allowing Masvidal to fight Paul when he briefly touched on the topic. It would likely have to be a co-promotion with Showtime, which White has spoken negatively of since doing business with the it for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match.

Dana White after Jake Paul’s KO prediction

LAS VEGAS – Dana White seems unfazed by recent threatening comments made by YouTuber-turner-boxer Jake Paul.

Following the conclusion of UFC on ESPN 30 at the UFC Apex, White was asked about Paul’s recent statement that if he ran into White, their feud would end up with Paul “knocking him the f*ck out.”

The proposition that makes sense to the UFC president who poked fun at Paul’s boxing opponents, including post-UFC-career athletes Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley.

“It actually makes sense,” White told MMA Junkie at the UFC on ESPN 30 post-fight news conference. “I’m 52 years old. I’m in the age bracket of guys he fights, so yeah, I could see him wanting to fight me. It’s all he fights are 50-year-olds.”

White said he doesn’t take Paul’s threat that seriously – at least not enough to organize any legal papers. Like with his fighters, White expects “mean things” to be said in the combat sports world – even ones directed at him.

“Let me tell you what,” White said. “Get in line. There are plenty of people who would like to assault me. Get in line. It’s a long f*cking line, buddy. You’re going to be waiting for a while. No, it doesn’t bother me. This is the business we’re in. I say it all the time about the fighters, too. We are not in the nice guy business. This is a very mean business. I say many mean things about people, too. It’s just part of this game. It’s all good.”

The back-and-forth is the latest chapter in the saga of Paul and White. Although White has long said he’s not interested in doing business with Paul, the YouTuber-turned-boxer has remained relentless in his prodding. He constantly attempts to goad the UFC president while bringing up the issue of fighter pay.

Paul, 24, fights former UFC welterweight champion, Woodley, on Sunday in Cleveland as the headlining match of a Showtime pay-per-view. He will look to advance to 4-0 as a professional boxer against Woodley, a pro boxing debutant.

UFC on ESPN 30 took place Saturday at the UFC Apex. The card aired on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.

Jake Paul mocks Conor McGregor and offers Dustin Poirier $100,000 chain after Irishman beaten at UFC 264

Jake Paul couldn’t resist mocking Conor McGregor after his defeat to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.

The YouTuber turned professional boxer was among the 20,000 capacity crowd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Paul wore the necklace to the UFC 264 event in Vegas

He watched as the fight came to an early end by doctor’s stoppage after McGregor broke his leg towards the end of the first round.

Paul has regularly called out MMA superstar McGregor and even had a $100,000 diamond chain made of the Irishman’s last knockout defeat to Poirier, which he wore to UFC 264.

Paul, 24, posted a video in the immediate aftermath of McGregor’s latest defeat to Poirier in their trilogy fight in which he stroked the necklace said: ‘Goodnight, buddy’.

He also said he was making a new offer to McGregor of $23 to fight him, having claimed to have previously offered him $50m for a boxing match.

Paul also offered McGregor’s victor, Poirier, his $100,000 chain.

Floyd Mayweather also delighted in McGregor’s defeat.

The boxing legend – who recently fought Jake Paul’s younger bother Logan in an exhibition fight – revealed he had won $85,000 from betting on Poirier to win.

Manny Pacquiao was far more graceful and congratulated Poirier on his victory and offered his sympathy to McGregor.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the Irishman, yet Poirier’s stock continues to rise and his star power is only growing after dethroning the biggest star in the sport for the second time in succession.

Jake Paul destroys Ben Askren in first-round knockout

Jake Paul wasn’t facing Nate Robinson this time, but a decorated MMA fighter, and the result was the same.

Paul, a YouTube sensation, knocked out Ben Askren in the first round of their Saturday night pay-per-view cruiserweight bout at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta with a straight right hand to the head.

The Triller Fight Club event was televised on FITE.tv for $49.99, and the main-event bout lasted less than two minutes.

The stoppage was questionable. Askren, 36, wanted to continue, but referee Brian Stutts said he was not in the shape to fight and it was stopped at the 1:59 mark.

Askren — who has a 19-2-0 (one no contest) record in UFC — didn’t seem crushed after the loss. He was shown walking backstage smiling after the fight, and apparently was in good spirits after making $500,000 in disclosed pay for the bout, according to CBS Sports.

The 24-year-old Paul — a social media influencer who insists he’s a real boxer — hasn’t fought a professional yet, but this was his first victory over a pro fighter. He is now 3-0 with three knockouts with previous wins over Robinson and AnEsonGib, a fellow YouTuber.

“This is the craziest moment of my life,” said Paul, who did pushups in the ring after the win. “I told y’all I was going to do it in the first round. I told y’all I’m a real fighter. I don’t know how many times I got to prove myself that this is for real.

“It’s been four months, I’ve been in training camp every day. I deserve this s–t. I don’t know how many times I have to prove myself that this is for real.

Paul, a showman who took a stunner from Kevin Owens in a WrestleMania 37 match last week, doesn’t have these top fighters quaking in their boots, judging by their reactions on Twitter.

Nate Robinson, who was panned for taking his fight with Paul, now actually has bragging rights for lasting the longest in the ring against the YouTube star. The former Knick and NBA slam-dunk champion was knocked out in the second round in their Nov. 28 bout.
