Jacqueline Avant: Man who pleaded guilty to killing philanthropist sentenced to 190 years to life in prison

“Today marks the end of a tragic case that rocked our community,” District Attorney George Gascón said during a news conference. “The senseless act not only impacted the Jacqueline Avant family, but an entire community.”

Aariel Maynor pleaded guilty last month to first-degree murder, attempted murder and several other charges, according to a release from the DA’s office. Maynor broke into Avant’s Beverly Hills home on December 1, 2021, and fatally shot the 81-year-old, the release said. He also shot at her security guard, but the guard was not injured, according to the release.

Maynor is not eligible for early parole and will spend the rest of his life in prison, Gascón said.

CNN has reached out to Maynor’s attorney for comment on the sentencing.

Gascón said he thought the sentencing was appropriate considering the circumstances, as he claimed Maynor allegedly made a series of jail calls that demonstrated “no remorse” and that were “very disturbing in nature.”

“Our office has and will continue to seek to hold accountable those that cause grievous harm in our community. That is especially true in cases where people show little or no remorse,” he said.

Maynor has been in and out of the criminal justice system since he was 12 years old, according to Gascón.

Gascón said this is an example of why better support systems are needed for those who frequently interact with law enforcement.

“We need to ensure that we provide the resources necessary for treatment, support both inside and outside the prison systems, and that we facilitate reentry in a way that would make us all safer,” he said. “We should do this not because we want to cuddle up to those that have committed crimes or cause harm, but because it is necessary for the safety of our community.”

Jacqueline Avant’s alleged killer failed by legal system, Los Angeles DA George Gascon says

The alleged killer of Jacqueline Avant, the wife of music executive and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Clarence Avant, was failed by a tough-on-crime approach that focuses only on incarceration and not on the root causes of crime, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon said.

Aariel Maynor faces murder, attempted murder and burglary charges, along with being a felon in possession of a gun in connection with the Dec. 1 alleged killing in Avant’s Beverly Hills home and a botched burglary at a second home where police say he accidentally shot himself in the foot.

Court records show Maynor, 29, was on parole at the time of the killing and has an extensive criminal record. He pleaded guilty to a robbery charge in 2013 and was sentenced to five years in prison. He pleaded no contest to a domestic violence incident in July 2013 and was convicted of grand theft in 2010.

He was released on parole in July 2018 but was sentenced in November of that year to four years in prison for robbery with enhancements for being a prior convicted felon. He was released on Sept. 1.

“As far as we can see, he never received any meaningful intervention that may have helped him set his life on a different path,” Gascon told reporters Wednesday. “One that would have prevented the terrible tragedy from occurring.”

The remarks came as the top prosecutor was defending his policies amid a second recall effort and criticism that his office is soft on crime.

After taking a moment of silence for Avant, 81, Gascon noted that Maynor was found with an AR-15 rifle at the scene of the second robbery, according to police.

“I’m angry at a system that allows a disturbed young man with a proven track record of violent behavior to be cycled in and out of prison with little or no meaning intervention to be able to gain access to an AR-15 military-style weapon and go out and kill Jacqueline Avant,” he said.

Jacqueline Avant, left, and Clarence Avant appear at the 11th Annual AAFCA Awards in Los Angeles on Jan. 22, 2020. She was fatally shot in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Maynor was arrested hours after allegedly killing Avant, a local philanthropist who supported many causes in Los Angeles. She and her husband counted many celebrities and political figures like former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, as friends.

In addition to social causes, Avant served on the boards of several organizations dedicated to preserving the fine arts. The Avant family has announced a Jacqueline Avant Memorial Fund for the new MLK Children’s Center in South Los Angeles.

In a statement, the Avant and Sarandos families thanked the public for the “outpouring of love and support” from around the world.

“We ask that you please allow us some time and space to grieve as a family and continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers,” the message states. “We thank you in advance for respecting our privacy during this difficult time.”

Actor Jacqueline Fernandez Stopped From Leaving India Over Extortion Case

Jacqueline Fernandes is to be questioned again, say agency sources. File photo.

Mumbai:

Actor Jacqueline Fernandez was today stopped at the Mumbai Airport by immigration officials due to a LOC (Look Out Circular). The Enforcement Directorate had opened a LOC against the actor in the Sukesh Chandrasekar case. Ms Fernandez wanted to go to Dubai for a show. She has been let go after brief questioning and has been informed that she has to appear before the probe agency in Delhi.

The ED will issue fresh summons to her for appearing at the Delhi office tomorrow

The probe agency has filed a charge sheet in a Delhi court against conman Sukesh Chandrasekar and others in the 200-crore money laundering case, alleging that he extorted Rs 200 crore from a businessman’s wife while he was lodged in Tihar jail. The central agency has unearthed evidence showing financial transactions from Chandrasekar to Ms Fernandez. A horse worth Rs 52 lakh and a Persian cat worth Rs 9 lakh were among gifts worth Rs 10 crores given by Chandrashekar to Ms Fernandez, the ED has said in its charge sheet, according to sources.

Investigation into alleged proceeds of crime reaching the Bollywood actor from Sukesh is still on, and the actor is to be questioned again.

Along with Ms Fernandez, the charge sheet mentions actor Nora Fatehi, who has been questioned in the case. Ms Fernandez and her aides have also been questioned.

Chandrashekar had earlier told the media that he had gifted a car to Ms Fatehi.

Earlier, a representative of Nora Fatehi had said that she “has been a victim”. “She does not know or have any personal connection with the accused and has been called by ED to strictly help with the investigation,” the representative said, adding that the actor is cooperating in the probe.

The shooting was reported at the couple’s home in the 1100 block of Maytor Place at about 2:20 a.m. Wednesday. Avant was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she died. Clarence Avant and a security guard were also on the property at the time of the shooting but were not hurt.

“That’s good. We are happy that the police are doing something,” said Yafa Cohan, a neighbor.

Beverly Hills police Chief Mark Stainbrook identified the suspect as 29-year-old Aariel Maynor, whose vehicle was spotted on several surveillance videos driving eastbound out of the city shortly after the shooting that killed Avant.

LAPD’s Hollywood Division officers were alerted to a shooting and burglary call in the 6000 block of Graciosa Drive at about 3:30 a.m., where Maynor was found in the backyard of the home, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the foot.

It was an “astute watch commander at Hollywood that, starting to put two and two together, and reached out to Beverly Hills,” according to LAPD Deputy Chief Blake Chow. Similarities between the two break-ins prompted Beverly Hills detectives to come out to Hollywood to investigate further.

With the arrest, police say they believe there is no further threat to the public, but the investigation is ongoing.

“At this time, we’re only looking at him as a suspect, but again, there’s a lot of evidence to go through, so we’re leaving open the possibility there could be other people involved,” Stainbrook said.

Stainbrook described Maynor as a parolee with an extensive criminal history. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, he was most recently released to parole supervision on Sept. 1 after serving four years for second-degree robbery. He has previously served time for a separate robbery conviction and grand theft.

Clarence Avant: Suspect arrested after famed music executive’s wife Jacqueline Avant killed in Beverly Hills shooting

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (KABC) — A parolee with an extensive criminal record was arrested for a Beverly Hills home invasion and shooting that resulted in the death of Jacqueline Avant, wife of a famed music executive, police announced Thursday.
The Beverly Hills Police Department identified the suspect as 29-year-old Aariel Maynor of Los Angeles.

They say Maynor is a parolee with a long criminal history. He was caught after apparently accidentally shooting himself in the foot with an AR-15 while committing another break-in just an hour after allegedly killing Avant.

Beverly Hills officers were called to the Avants’ home in the 1100 block of Maytor Place around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning after a reported shooting. Officers found the 81-year-old with a gunshot wound. Avant was taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

About one hour later, officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood division responded to another shooting call in the 6000 block of Graciosa Drive, where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his foot.

Investigators later determined that Maynor was involved in a burglary at that home and had accidentally shot himself with an AR-15. Further investigation tied him to Avant’s death, according to a press release. The caliber of the weapon matched the bullets found at the Avant murder scene.

Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark G. Stainbrook said there were multiple surveillance videos that showed Maynor’s vehicle heading eastbound out of Beverly Hills shortly after the shooting.

Police believe Maynor acted alone and a motive remains unclear.

After the arrest was announced, the Avant and Sarandos families released a statement thanking police. (Clarence and Jackie Savant’s daughter, Nicole, is married to Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of Netflix.)

“Our deepest gratitude to The City of Beverly Hills, the BHPD and all law enforcement for their diligence on this matter,” the statement read. “Now, let justice be served.”

Avant, known affectionately as “Jackie,” was well-known and well-respected for her philanthropy over the years.

Her husband, Clarence Avant, was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He was also the subject of a 2019 Netflix documentary “The Black Godfather,” which highlighted his influence in the music industry.

Stainbrook confirmed there was a private security guard on the property at the time, but it was not clear how that individual may have interacted with the suspect.

On Wednesday, Stainbrook read a statement from the Avant family:
“The entire Avant family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love, support and condolences for Jacqueline Avant. Jacqueline was an amazing woman, wife, mother, philanthropist, and a 55-year resident of Beverly Hills, who has made an immeasurable positive contribution and impact on the arts community. She will be missed by her family, friends and all of the people she has held throughout her amazing life.”

Jacqueline Avant murder suspect arrested in Beverly Hills slaying

A parolee with a long criminal history has been arrested in the killing of Jacqueline Avant, a local philanthropist and wife of legendary music executive Clarence Avant, in the couple’s Beverly Hills, California, home during a burglary, authorities said Thursday.

The suspect was identified by the Beverly Hills Police Department as 29-year-old Aariel Maynor of Los Angeles.

“This is one of the most protected and patrolled cities in the world,” Beverly Hills Police Chief Stainbrook told reporters. “Crime will not be tolerated here.”

MICHIGAN SUSPECT OPENS FIRE ON BUS, WOUNDING 3; LATER KILLED BY POLICE

Jacqueline Avant and Clarence Avant appear at the 11th Annual AAFCA Awards in Los Angeles on Jan. 22, 2020. She was fatally shot early Wednesday in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Shortly after the early Wednesday slaying, Maynor was found at a separate burglary in Los Angeles with a gunshot wound to the foot, Stainbrook said. The wound was apparently accidentally self-inflicted.

Avant, 81, was found shot in the home just before 2:30 a.m. inside her estate. She later died at a hospital. A security guard was present at the home at the time of the shooting, police said.

Surveillance and city cameras captured Maynor traveling east from Beverly Hills after shooting Avant, the chief said. Investigators believe he acted alone. Officials did not say how many shots were fired.

In a statement, the Avant and Sarandos families thanked authorities for the quick arrest.

“Our deepest gratitude to The City of Beverly Hills, the BHPD and all law enforcement for their diligence on this matter,” the statement said. “Now, let justice be served.”

Avant’s daughter, Nicole, is married to Ted Sarandos, Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer, and served as a U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas during the Obama administration.

About an hour after Avant was shot, Los Angeles police officers in the department’s Hollywood Division responded to a shooting and found Maynard in a backyard with the gunshot wound to the foot. He was arrested and taken to a hospital.

Beverly Hills investigators collected evidence, including an AR-15 rifle, that connected him to the fatal shooting of Avant. They were alerted to the second burglary by the Los Angeles Police Department.

“Somewhere in the night we had an astute watch commander at Hollywood (Division) that started to put two-and-two together and reached out to Beverly Hills … and we started communicating, and there were some similarities,” LAPD Deputy Chief Blake Chow said.

Beverly Hills detectives have taken over both burglary investigations.

Authorities are still trying to determine a motive for the slaying. Stainbrook declined to state whether the attack was random.

“Our focus now has transitioned from finding a suspect to a continuing investigation that will lead to a successful prosecution,” he said. “At this time, we’re only looking at him as a suspect. But again, there’s a lot of evidence to go through, so we’re leaving open the possibility there could be other people involved.”

Maynor was on parole at the time of the shooting, but authorities declined to say for what offense, only noting that he has a long criminal history. He will be booked into the Los Angeles County jail once he is medically cleared by doctors.

Clarence Avant, 90, was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and was known as the “Godfather of Black Music.” The death of his wife came amid a wave of robberies and home invasions in Los Angeles.

Police suggested Avant may have been targeted.

“I don’t think it’s a random attack, but I can’t speculate on that right now,” Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) Chief Mark Stainbrook said at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect or suspects are at large and the motive is still unknown, Stainbrook said. An investigation is ongoing.

Stainbrook also read a statement shared by the Avant family.

“Jacqueline was an amazing woman, wife, mother, philanthropist, and a 55-year resident of Beverly Hills, who has made an immeasurable positive contribution and impact on the arts community,” said Stainbrook. “She will be missed by her family, friends, and all of the people she has helped throughout her amazing life.”

The Avants married in 1967 and had two children together. Clarence Avant was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year. He was the subject of the 2019 documentary “The Black Godfather,” which looked at his political influence, musical legacy and work with musicians like Bill Withers and Babyface.

After news of her death, leaders in the Los Angeles community paid tribute to Avant.

“I’m heartbroken by this morning’s news of the tragic and shocking murder of Mrs. Jacqueline Avant,” Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-CA) said in a statement. “Mrs. Avant was a force of compassion and empowerment locally and nationally for decades, as well as a model of service and giving back to those who needed it most.”

“Cookie and I are absolutely devastated at the loss of one of our closest friends Jackie Avant,” Magic Johnson tweeted. “This is the saddest day in our lives.”

Beverly Hills police say a shooting at the 1100 block of Maytor Place was called in at 2:23 a.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, they found a woman with a gunshot wound, and there were no suspects at the scene.

The woman was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but did not survive. At an afternoon news conference, Beverly Hills police Chief Mark Stainbrook confirmed the woman killed was 81-year-old Jacqueline Avant.

“The Avant family’s contributions to the world of entertainment and to better communities across Los Angeles are unmatched,” Stainbrook said. He said the department is in contact with the family and offering their support and resources.

Avant was the wife of 90-year-old music executive Clarence Avant and mother-in-law of Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Clarence Avant, who was not injured in the shooting, is known as the “Godfather of Black Music” who worked with the likes of Louis Armstrong, the SOS Band, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Babyface.

Clarence Avant and a security guard were present at the time of the shooting, but they were not hurt, Stainbrook said.

Stainbrook said he was asked to thank everyone for their messages of support and condolences on behalf of the Avant family.

“Jacqueline was an amazing woman, wife, mother, philanthropist, and a 55-year resident of Beverly Hills who has made an immeasurable, positive contribution and impact on the arts community. She will be missed by her family, friends, and all of the people she has helped throughout her amazing life,” Stainbrook read from the Avant family’s statement.

The Avants were married for 54 years. Danny Bakewell Sr., who is the owner of the Black newspaper the Los Angeles Sentinel,  says he is a lifelong friend of the Avant family and was “overwhelmingly pained” at the loss of such a beautiful person.

“For her to be killed in such a senseless way is unfathomable. There are no human beings more kind and generous than Clarence and Jackie, and for their home and their lives to be violated in such a violent manner is unconscionable,” he said in a statement.

Homicide investigators are at the home, which is located in the Hollywood Hills, between Coldwater Canyon and Laurel Canyon Boulevards.

“I cannot believe this is happening to our neighborhood,” Vida Ardebichi, a neighbor who said she’d often see the 81-year-old Avant out walking, said.

While investigators are done processing the scene, the investigation is far from over. Authorities did say it’s too early to determine a motive in this shooting. But in recent weeks, there has been increase in follow-home robberies, that have prompted the LAPD to issue an alert last month. A number have involved celebrities, including TV personality Terrence J and “Real Housewife” Dorit Kemsley.
