Texas announces hire of Jacksonville Jaguars WR coach Chris Jackson

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receivers coach Chris Jackson is leaving Florida to accept the same position with the Texas Longhorns, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

The school confirmed the news on Tuesday evening with Jackson also holding the title of passing game coordinator.

“We’re fired up that Chris Jackson is a Longhorn,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said. “He’s such a talented coach with a ton of football and life experience that we’ll benefit from having on our staff. Chris is a passionate and attention-to-detail guy who took a unique path to coaching, but is as good as they get when it comes to developing and preparing receivers. He’s a very well-respected coach with great work ethic who is a student of the game, and he’s a proven leader who not only helps his players improve on the field, but also builds strong relationships with them, too. During his time in the NFL, he’s worked with some exceptional coaches who have all quickly recognized his talent in the profession. Not only has he coached players at the highest level the past five years in the NFL, he knows the position well having been an NFL veteran, All-Pac-10 and 1,000-yard receiver himself. He played at Washington State with Jeff Banks, so he’s a guy we’re very familiar with and know he’ll be a tremendous addition to our staff. We’re excited to get him started.”

The news comes more than two weeks after former Texas wide receivers coach Brennan Marion was officially announced as the offensive coordinator at UNLV and eight days after Jackson seemingly denied reports linking him to the Longhorns.

But that was when Jacksonville was still in the playoffs and following their elimination by the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Jackson was free to begin finalizing his agreement to join Sarkisian’s staff.

Jackson’s tie to the program is that he played with tight ends coach/special teams coordinator Jeff Banks at Washington State in 1996 and 1997, including for the Rose Bowl run led by Ryan Leaf in the latter season.

“My major thought in this move was originally just young men,” Jackson said. “The excitement and opportunity to coach at the college level at a school with the notoriety that Texas has is a great opportunity. Working with young men coming in from 17 to 18 years old to leaving at 22 and providing a platform for them and allowing them to grow, not only as football players but as young men, that’s what I was drawn to, as well. I’ve always been passionate about that, and I’ve been able to do that at NFL level, but there’s something that’s super intriguing about those young men, ones I can hopefully inspire and lead through the position I just left. Some of them will want to pursue a professional career and just need some of that guidance and leadership to get there, and I’ve seen that not only as a player, but as a coach now. That’s the work for me — young men and development.

“Coach Sarkisian has always been phenomenal and a mastermind of offense. Being a wide receiver myself, I’m looking to really just lock all the way into his thought processes for why he does things and how he does things, so I can just be an extension of him. He’s had success not only at the college level, but also in the NFL, so I just want to embrace all of it and add whatever I can in regards to my experience and thought process. But to me, it was a no-brainer to come to Texas and work under the leadership of Sark and with his great staff. He’s done it at the collegiate level and the NFL level, and I know he’s turning the culture there. I just want to be a part of that.”

After a long professional career primarily in the Arena Football League that included 13,355 receiving yards and 325 touchdowns, Jackson coached wide receivers at a high school in Arizona before landing a job in 2019 as a defensive assistant with the Chicago Bears. Jackson previously spent time with the Bears during training camp in 2018 thanks to the NFL’s Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship program.

Jackson moved to a role as an assistant wide receivers coach in Chicago for two seasons before Doug Pederson hired him in Jacksonville last year for what turned out to be a successful season for wide receivers Christian Kirk and Zay Jones:

In his one season with the Jaguars, Jackson guided the wide receivers unit to becoming one of only three in the NFL to have two players with 80-plus receptions in 2022 in Christian Kirk (84) and Zay Jones (82). Both totals were in the top 10 in Jacksonville single-season history with Kirk’s ranking eighth, and Jones’s tied for 10th. Kirk also achieved his first 1,000-yard receiving season with 1,108 to rank 14th in the league to go along with eight touchdowns, which tied for fifth in Jaguars’ history. Meanwhile, Jones registered 823 receiving yards and five touchdowns, and Marvin Jones, Jr., added 46 receptions for 529 yards and three touchdowns.

So while Jackson doesn’t have any experience in college football, particularly as a recruiter, he is a Mater Dei alum, providing a tie to the talent-laden California program, and his quick rise in the NFL ranks suggests the capability to quickly adjust to his new role on the Forty Acres.

“I know Texas is football,” Jackson added. “That’s what I do know, and that’s coming from a California kid. I knew people back in the day never left Texas, especially if you were one of the top players in Texas, that’s where you went. I want to play a role in helping Coach Sark and the staff continue to get back to that aspect, where Texas is the only place these Texas kids want to go. Austin is an awesome city. My oldest son went to St. Edwards for two years, so I got an opportunity to get him situated there and look around. I’m very much drawn to the city, the lake, and downtown is beautiful. I’m just excited to be a part of that and helping to continue to grow the tradition of Texas.”

Jaguars to host Chargers Saturday at TIAA Bank Field in AFC wild-card round

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars will host the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 8:15 p.m. at TIAA Bank Field in an AFC wild-card round matchup.

This comes after the Jaguars’ big win against the Titans Saturday night, leading them to win the AFC South for the first time since 2017 — and fans are still celebrating the day after.

Jaguars Analyst Frank Frangie said in Saturday’s game the defense and special teams were phenomenal. Now the team needs to stay consistent.

Coming into Sunday, there were only two possible matchups for the Jaguars next week — both of them would be second matchups with a team the Jaguars beat during the regular season: the Ravens and the Chargers. The Ravens needed a win to earn the No. 5 seed.

That 27-16 loss to the Bengals on Sunday locked in the Chargers to the fifth seed. That means Los Angeles will make the cross-country trek to face the fourth-seeded Jaguars on Saturday at 8:15 p.m.

Frangie also said aside from Trevor Lawrence, a lot of players have stood out in making the team successful.

“I think offensively Trevor has been great. He’s had great help. Christian Kirk is the leader in that receiver room. He’s been so good. Evan Ingram has had his best year as a pro. Zay Jones. All three receivers I think have been very good, as well as Travis Etienne,” Frangie said. The running back, I think, defensively a couple of guys have really stepped up. Foye, the middle linebacker, has been so good. He is a tackling machine. The best tackler, I think, in the league. The best linebacker in the league. He deserved to go to the Pro Bowl, and Rayshawn Jenkins, the safety, had his best year.”

The Jaguars made the trip to the West Coast earlier this year and it went pretty well for them. They beat the Chargers 38-10, part of a 2-1 start to the season, a start that raised expectations for fans. Jacksonville was just 3-15 all-time in the Pacific time zone entering that game. This will be a matchup between two of the rising star quarterbacks in the NFL — Justin Herbert and Trevor Lawrence.

The winner of Saturday’s game will go on to face the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round.

Zach Wilson: New York Jets quarterback booed off during defeat by Jacksonville Jaguars

CNN
 —

Quarterback Zach Wilson endured a torrid night before eventually being benched as the New York Jets were beaten 19-3 by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday.

Wilson was booed at different points throughout the game before being replaced by Chris Streveler in the third quarter after completing just nine of 18 passes for 92 yards.

“I don’t blame them,” Wilson told reporters when asked about fans booing. We have a passionate fan base, and they’re here to watch us score touchdowns.

“We’re not scoring touchdowns, we’re not getting first downs, we’re not moving the ball and, obviously, we can’t throw the ball. Of course they’re going to be frustrated.”

As the rain poured down on a rainy night at the MetLife Stadium, Wilson looked out of sorts as the Jets slumped to a fourth successive defeat – another major blow to the franchise’s playoff hopes.

The No. 2 overall draft pick in 2021, Wilson has struggled for form during his two seasons at the Jets.

“I just felt like I didn’t have any rhythm out there,” added Wilson. “I was just trying to find some confidence out there on the field, just find something to get us going – a little spark. I couldn’t get anything there.”

Jets head coach Robert Saleh decided to replace Wilson with Streveler who had been elevated from the practice squad for Thursday’s game.

Streveler provided some moments of hope on his season debut, completing 10 of 15 passes for 90 yards.

“Obviously I know Zach was struggling, but Streveler came in, ran a couple of plays, sparked the offense, got the explosive play, and so it just snowballed in a good way, so we wanted to give him the opportunity to finish the drive,” Saleh told reporters.

“We haven’t seen the last of [Wilson]. But right now he’s just got to focus on finding ways to get better, and we’ve got to find ways to help him.

“It’s not just him, it’s collective, and we’ve all got to find ways to get better.”

While the Jets are left licking their wounds, the Jaguars can celebrate their third straight victory as they continued their late-season surge.

Quarterback Tom Lawrance, the No.1 overall pick in last year’s draft, completed 20 of his 31 passes for 229 yards and leaped in for the only touchdown of the game.

Prominent local political donor, businessman found dead in Atlantic Beach was subject of JSO investigation

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – A prominent Northeast Florida businessman and well-known political donor has died.

According to multiple sources, Kent Stermon was found dead in his car at the Mayport Post Office in Atlantic Beach on Thursday night. He was 50 years old.

Police said foul play is not suspected in the death.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Stermon was the subject of an “active investigation” that started a few weeks before his death.

“This investigation remains ongoing at this time and will continue until its completion. As with all active investigations, there is limited information available to release at this time. However, as soon as this investigation has been completed, all applicable information will be available for release to the public,” Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said in a statement to News4JAX.

Florida Politics reported that Stermon had also been dealing with health issues and had suffered a stroke on Monday.

Former State Representative Travis Cummings told News4JAX he and Stermon were college roommates and close friends.

“My family and the NE Florida community are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend Kent Stermon. I would ask that everyone have Christie and Abbie in their thoughts and prayers, while respecting their privacy. I don’t think Kent’s contributions to our community, our first responders and to those in need will ever be fully known or realized,” Cummings wrote in a statement to News4JAX.

Stermon served as a board member on Florida’s State University System. According to the board website, Stermon was president of Total Military Management and also served on the Florida Highway Patrol Advisory Council and was chair of the Governor’s Public Safety Transition Advisory Committee.

A long-time friend to Gov. Ron DeSantis and Mayor Lenny Curry, Stermon was a well-connected political consultant for the Duval County GOP.

Sheriff Waters sent well wishes to the Stermon family.

“My condolences go out to the Stermon family during their time of loss. Without a doubt, their grief is going to be overwhelming, and my heart goes out to them,” Waters said.

DeSantis’ communications director, Taryn Fenske, sent News4JAX a statement.

“The Governor and First Lady were shocked and saddened to hear of Kent’s passing, and their prayers (and our entire office’s prayers) are with his family during this difficult time,” the statement reads.

JSO said the incident involving his death is being investigated by the Atlantic Beach Police Department.

In 2015, Stermon was named Citizen of the Year by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

News4JAX political analyst Rick Mullaney said Stermon has other interests outside of politics.

“For Kent, two of his biggest priorities were higher education in students and law enforcement, also very strong and close relationships with law enforcement in North Florida particularly former sheriff Mike Williams,” Mullaney said. “He certainly never ran for office so you wouldn’t see him that way, he wasn’t on television and he wasn’t in the media but behind the scenes, he was very, very active.”

News4JAX has reached out to the Duval GOP and other local leaders for comment.

Stermon leaves behind his wife and teenage daughter.
