Elaine Chao Issued a Rare Response to Trump’s Racist Nickname for Her

  • Former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has spoken out against Trump’s attacks on her.
  • Trump on Monday again referred to Chao as “Coco Chow” in a Truth Social post.
  • Chao said the racist nickname said more about Trump “than it will ever say about Asian Americans.”

One-time Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has hit back at former President Donald Trump, who has for months been posting racist diatribes about her on social media.

In a statement to Politico on Wednesday, Chao — who served four years in Trump’s cabinet — voiced her displeasure at his derogatory nickname for her.

“When I was young, some people deliberately misspelled or mispronounced my name,” the statement read. “Asian Americans have worked hard to change that experience for the next generation.”

“He doesn’t seem to understand that, which says a whole lot more about him than it will ever say about Asian Americans,” Chao added.

Chao released her statement after Trump in a Truth Social post on Monday once again referred to her by the nickname “Coco Chow.”

“Does Coco Chow have anything to do with Joe Biden’s Classified Documents being sent and stored in Chinatown?” he wrote. “Her husband, the Old Broken Crow, is VERY close to Biden, the Democrats, and, of course, China.”

Chao is married to Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Trump has repeatedly claimed without substantiation that Chao and McConnell are compromised by their ties to China. Trump has also called Chao “crazy” and described her as McConnell’s “China loving wife.”

Chao had, thus far, avoided responding to Trump directly.

“He’s trying to get a rise out of us. He says all sorts of outrageous things, and I don’t make a point of answering any one of them,” she told CNN in December. McConnell previously said he has no response to Trump calling his wife crazy.

It’s unclear why Chao — amongst all of Trump’s political foes’ spouses — has been such a magnet for the former president’s ire, but Chao was the first Trump Cabinet member to resign following the Capitol riot.

When approached for comment about Chao, Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, told Politico: “People should stop feigning outrage and engaging in controversies that exist only in their heads.”

Cheung also parroted Trump’s rhetoric about Chao.

“What’s actually concerning is her family’s deeply troubling ties to Communist China, which has undermined American economic and national security,” Cheung told Politico.

Trump has repeatedly made racist, anti-Asian remarks. He gave COVID-19 the nickname “Kung-Flu” in 2020. His other term for COVID-19, the “China Virus,” is still used in right-wing fringe circles.

Trump’s press office and a representative for Chao did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.

Indonesia: Warning issued over ‘dragon’s breath’ viral video trend

CNN
 —

Indonesia is warning people against consuming liquid nitrogen after more than 20 children were harmed eating a street snack known as “dragon’s breath” that’s at the center of a dangerous new viral video trend.

The children suffered burns to their skin, severe stomach pains and food poisoning after consuming the colorful candies, according to Indonesia’s Ministry of Health, which is urging parents, teachers and local health authorities to be vigilant.

The candies are dipped in liquid nitrogen to create a vapor effect when eaten. They are popular with children, dozens of whom have uploaded clips to short-form video app TikTok showing them blowing the fumes out of their mouths, noses and ears. One video showing the preparation of the snack by a street vendor has been viewed close to 10 million times.

Around 25 children have been hurt consuming the candies, including two who were hospitalized, said the ministry’s director general Maxi Rein Rondonuwu. No deaths have been reported.

Using liquid nitrogen in food preparation is not illegal. Top chefs often use the vapors to create theatrical effects when serving dishes. It is clear, colorless and odorless, and commonly used in medical settings and as an ingredient to freeze food.

However, when not used properly, it can be hazardous.

”Liquid nitrogen is not only dangerous when consumed, it can cause severe breathing difficulties from nitrogen fumes that are inhaled over a long time,” Maxi said.

The first case was reported in July 2022, according to the ministry, when a child from a village in the Ponorogo Regency in East Java suffered cold burns on his skin after eating the snack.

More cases were reported in November and December, including a 4-year-old boy who was admitted to hospital in the capital Jakarta with severe stomach pain.

“Schools must educate children in the community about the dangers of liquid nitrogen in food (to) prevent more cases of severe food poisoning,” Maxi said.

New liquid nitrogen cereal sparks controversy

In 2018, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued safety alerts warning that serious injury could result from eating foods like ice cream, cereal or cocktails prepared with liquid nitrogen.

“Injuries have occurred from handling or eating products prepared by adding liquid nitrogen immediately before consumption, even after the liquid nitrogen has fully evaporated due to the extremely low temperature of the food,” the FDA said.

“This is a hazardous chemical compound,” said Clarence Yeo, a Singapore-based doctor. “It irritates the stomach and can cause burns in the mouth and esophagus. Children would be especially sensitive to (its effects) if it is eaten in large amounts.”

Yeo warned he “wouldn’t advise anyone to eat it.”

“You could end up in hospital and the worst case scenario could be organ damage,” he said.

Wilton area evacuation order issued amid bridge and levee repairs

WILTON — The Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services issued an evacuation order for residents in the Wilton area, and Sacramento County emergency officials say neighbors need to leave immediately.

The order comes as rising water is expected to spill over into roads across Wilton and cut off evacuation routes.

“Honestly, it’s a little scary, I’m not gonna lie,” said Kylie Wolfe before evacuating Sunday afternoon.

Wilton residents were leaving and wanted to avoid getting stuck.

“I just packed everything I could, and by the time we were leaving, the road was shut down; I barely made it out with my car,” said Austin Ritcher of Wilton.

A Red Cross shelter is open in Elk Grove at the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation for anyone seeking refuge from the storm.

However, one woman outside the shelter hoping to escape the storm said she was turned away because of her dog. They’re now sleeping in her car.

“It’s getting through the night. That’s what scares me. It’s being able to officially make it to tomorrow morning without any lighting strikes or my car being blown over,” said Kimberly Gohm.

As the storm moved in, it was a race against time on Sunday for Reclamation District 800 (RD800) to build up a rock wall underneath the Wilton Bridge to protect the road from erosion due to rising water from the Cosumnes River that runs underneath.

“That water would just erode, and it would go right around the bridge embankment, and this whole road would collapse. That’s what we were trying to avoid,” Schneider told CBS13 Sunday.

Finished just in time, and with the help of Sacramento County crews, Wilton Bridge is well protected, and RD800 is closely watching vulnerable levees.

“I think they are safe. The levees are all safe right now; if they start overtopping, we will get on it and sandbag them,” said Schneider.

He added the levee break on Bradley Ranch Road remains a priority, as a total fix is not yet possible. RD800 constructed a weir to help block water.

“We went in, though, and we armored the banks. Where there was any fresh dirt that was cut where the water could run, we put a big rock on it to armor it and fanned it out into the river. So when the water does come, it doesn’t erode behind our weir that we have right now,” said Schneider.

Total repairs at Bradley Ranch Road will not come soon, and they will not come cheap. It could cost close to $1 million.

“We built a weir to try and hold the water in the river at 10 to 11 feet. That’s about the biggest effort we can make right now; it’s the most expensive part of the job,” said Schneider.

He adds RD800 identified a new breach Saturday night on the upper end of the district by Jackson Highway, seeing severe sloughing and erosion. The goal is to start making repairs Monday.

“Weather permitting, we will be up there with about 600 to 700 tons of rip rap that we are outing on it to secure it. Its danger was gonna be taking out the access road to the rancher up there and a couple of power poles that were gonna be in trouble,” said Schneider.

In addition, as of Sunday, a levee break at Peach Road is no longer considered a break.

“We got it fixed; it’s back in place. The road is prepared, so we can do levee patrols, a good thing,” said Schneider.

As people make their way to safer grounds, the message from one Wilton neighbor to another is strong.

“If you see that evacuation warning, don’t take it lightly. Make sure you are prepared, and when it’s time to go, go. Don’t second guess anything,” said Wolfe.

Chicago weather: Forecast calls for snow this week, with more than a foot of snowfall Thursday, Friday; Winter Storm Watch issued

CHICAGO (WLS) — The Chicago weather forecast this week shows a significant winter storm that has the potential to dump upwards of a foot of snow before Christmas.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the entire Chicago area and northwest Indiana from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Saturday.

ABC7 Meteorologist Tracy Butler says some light snow could begin Thursday afternoon, with heaviest snow coming Thursday night into the day on Friday.

High winds and frigid temperatures will also lead to blizzard-like conditions Thursday night into Friday morning.

Butler said the storm could bring a potential of 6 to 12 inches of snow by the weekend, with higher amounts possible further east from lake-effect snow.

WATCH | Latest 7-day Chicago weather forecast

High winds in excess of 55 mph are expected while the heaviest snow is falling, ABC7 Meteorologist Larry Mowry said, adding that he expects the Winter Storm Watch will be upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning or Blizzard Warning later in the week.

“The concern will be not only the snow that’s coming down, but the blowing snow, which will reduce visibility,” Mowry said. “And because the winds will be this strong, there is the threat of power outages Thursday night through the day on Friday.”

POLAR PLUNGE | 1st week of winter brings snow and bitterly cold temperatures

Mowry said the heavy snow and high winds will combine to create major travel impacts, with “extremely difficult to impossible travel from Thursday night through the day on Friday.”

Temps will also crash from the teens on Friday to single-digits over the weekend, with the high winds creating dangerously cold conditions. Friday will starts with wind chills as low as -20 and -30, and will stay well below zero through the day, Mowry said.

The forecast for this week has forced many holiday travelers to scramble to change their plans. Most airlines currently have weather waivers in place, which means you can change your flights for free if you have flexible travel plans.

Stay tuned to ABC7 Eyewitness News and ABC7Chicago.com for the latest forecast and snowfall amounts as the winter storm approaches.

Winter Storm Watch Issued for Chicago Area, With ‘Blizzard Conditions’ Possible Later This Week – NBC Chicago

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the entire Chicago area, with “blizzard conditions” and wind gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour possible later this week.

According to the alert, the watch will take effect Thursday evening and will remain in effect until Friday night.

McHenry, Lake, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy and Kankakee counties are all included in the watch, as are Indiana’s Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Newton and Jasper counties.

While forecasts are unclear as to how much snow may actually fall, with the storm still potentially taking several different paths to arrive in the Midwest, what is known is that a snow event will coincide with fierce winds Thursday and into Friday.

The National Weather Service says that “blizzard conditions are possible” with the storm, with some wind gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour.

As a result, travel will become difficult, if not impossible, during the height of the storm, and power outages will be possible due to the hazardous conditions.

“White-out conditions” can be expected on area roadways, leaving visibility levels at or near zero.

After the storm passes through the area, frigid cold temperatures are expected, with highs potentially dropping into the single digits over the weekend.

Accounting firm that issued proof of reserves report for Binance halts service to all crypto clients

Mazars, the accounting firm that issued a proof of reserves report posted by cryptocurrency giant Binance last week, has pulled the report from its website and no longer offers the service for its crypto clients.

Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, tweeted a link to the report on Dec. 7 as it seeks to reassure clients of its reserves following the collapse of competitor FTX last month.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Mazars scrubbed the report from its site on Friday.

“Mazars has paused its activity relating to the provision of Proof of Reserves Reports for entities in the cryptocurrency sector due to concerns regarding the way these reports are understood by the public,” the accounting group said in an emailed statement to FOX Business.

FORMER FTX SPOKESMAN KEVIN O’LEARY SAYS HE BELIEVES BINANCE PUT FTX ‘OUT OF BUSINESS INTENTIONALLY’

A Binance spokesperson said Mazars “has indicated that they will temporarily pause their work with all of their crypto clients globally, which include Crypto.com, KuCoin and Binance. Unfortunately, this means that we will not be able to work with Mazars for the moment.”

“Ultimately, our users want to know that their funds are secure and that our business is financially strong,” Binance’s statement continued. “To that end, Binance’s capital structure is debt free and, over the past week, Binance passed a stress test that should give the community extraordinary comfort that their funds are secure. Despite the large number of withdrawals 12-14 December, $6B of net withdrawals over three days, we were able to fulfill them without breaking stride.”

Binance said it has reached out to several major accounting firms, including the Big Four, seeking one willing to perform a proof of reserves report. The crypto exchange said the Big Four — which are Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and Pricewaterhouse Coopers — are all “currently unwilling to conduct a PoR for a private crypto company.”

BINANCE CEO TWEETS ‘BUSINESS AS USUAL’ AFTER PAUSING USDC COIN WITHDRAWAL TUESDAY

The crypto industry has been rocked by the downfall of FTX, leaving investors with major jitters after a run on the bank showed the exchange — worth roughly $40 billion at one point — did not have enough in reserves to honor the withdrawals. The company filed for bankruptcy last month, resulting in billions of dollars in losses for an estimated one million customers worldwide.

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was arrested Monday on several charges connected to his company’s collapse, which prompted calls for greater regulations for the crypto industry by jurisdictions worldwide — including requiring proof of reserves.

Texas men’s basketball coach Chris Beard released, protective order issued in assault case

Texas men’s basketball head coach Chris Beard was issued a protective order and is facing felony assault charges after a woman said he strangled her early Monday morning, Austin police said.

Beard, 49, is accused of assaulting a family member at a home in the 1900 block of Vista Lane, according to police. He faces a third-degree felony charge of assault on a family/household member — impede breath circulation. It is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Officers responded about 12:15 a.m. Monday to a 911 call about a disturbance that was no longer ongoing at a home in the Tarrytown neighborhood of West Austin, police said. The caller reported that one of the individuals involved had left the house, where officers located a woman who said Beard assaulted and strangled her, police said.

Beard was booked into Travis County Jail at 4:18 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office. He made his first appearance in court Monday and was released after posting a $10,000 bond.

A judge also issued protective orders in the case. Beard is not allowed to be within 200 yards of the woman he is accused of assaulting while the case is pending, and under an emergency order set to expire Feb. 10, he is not allowed to be within 200 yards of his home, possess a firearm, or communicate in a threatening way with the woman.

After leaving the jail, Beard did not respond to questions from reporters. His attorney, Perry Minton, had told Austin television station KEYE-TV on Monday morning that Beard is “100 percent innocent of these charges.”

“He should have never been arrested,” Minton said in a prepared statement. “The complainant wants him released immediately and all charges dismissed. It is truly inconceivable.”

A University of Texas spokesperson released a statement Monday that did not offer any information about Beard’s status with the team.

“The University is aware of the situation regarding Chris Beard. We are continuing to gather information and monitoring the legal process.”

After five seasons at Texas Tech, Beard became the head coach of the Texas Longhorns, his alma mater, in 2021. He has a 29-13 record in two seasons and has led the Longhorns to 7-1 with wins over three ranked teams — Gonzaga, Arkansas and Creighton. Texas was ranked No. 2 in the country before dropping to seventh after the team fell to Illinois last week, its first loss of the season.

Texas is set to play Rice at 7 p.m. Monday at the Moody Center in Austin, followed by a trip to Dallas on Sunday to face Stanford at American Airlines Center.

Who is Chris Beard?

Beard started his coaching journey as a graduate assistant for the Longhorns in 1991. The road that led him back to his alma mater was long and winding, to say the least.

After leaving Texas in 1995, Beard spent time as an assistant at Abilene Christian and North Texas. He was the head coach at two different junior college programs. He even spent a year coaching the South Carolina Warriors, a semiprofessional team. Stints as the head coach at McMurry University in Abilene and Angelo State in San Angelo came next, before Beard started his Division I head coaching career at Arkansas-Little Rock.

10 things to know about Chris Beard, including his arrest, return to Texas and more

By the time he reached Texas Tech in 2016, he had built a reputation as a defensive mastermind, with teams at each stop embodying his philosophy.

“They are really good at reaching, poking and digging things outta there,’’ Gonzaga head coach Mark Few said of the Red Raiders in 2019. “So it’s real. That defense is real.’’

As was Beard’s coaching rise. He described himself and his teams as underdogs, but that title lost some relevancy after Beard took Tech to the national title game in 2019.

Despite losing to Virginia 85-77 in overtime, Beard had certified himself as one of the nation’s most talked-about coaches. When Texas and former coach Shaka Smart parted ways in 2021, Beard was the clear target.

Comfort Suites, McDonald’s and Monday nights: Chris Beard’s ready to bring titles to Texas after unorthodox hiring

He was adored at Texas Tech, but that changed when Beard signed a seven-year, $35 million contract with Texas — a Big 12 conference rival.

“Chris did so much for this community, for this program,” Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said last year. “Had he gone to any other university, he’d be celebrated.

“But there’s just certain things you cannot do, and one of them is you can’t leave Texas Tech for Texas.”

A hostile crowd and plenty of boos awaited Beard when he made his first trip to Lubbock with the Longhorns last season. The Red Raiders and new head coach Mark Adams won that game, and eventually made it to the Sweet 16 — one step further than the Longhorns and Beard, who lost to Purdue in the second round.

But it was the Longhorns’ first NCAA Tournament win since 2014 under Rick Barnes, and Beard finished his first season at 22-12. After the Longhorns secured a top-six recruiting class and multiple transfers, expectations were high for this season.

So far, Texas had lived up to it.
