Orioles Acquire Cole Irvin From A’s

The Orioles have acquired left-handed pitcher Cole Irvin in a trade with the Athletics, per announcements from both clubs. Right-handed pitching prospect Kyle Virbitsky will also head to Baltimore while infield prospect Darell Hernaiz is heading to the A’s.

On one hand, this move comes as a surprise, since there had been no previous indication the A’s were shopping Irvin or that they were talking to the Orioles. On the other hand, it’s not shocking to see the club continue tearing down the roster, since they’ve been aggressively committed to that path for the past year. Matt Chapman, Matt Olson, Sean Manaea and Chris Bassitt were all traded just before the 2022 campaign, while Frankie Montas was dealt midseason and Sean Murphy this winter.

With the club seemingly willing to strip the roster down to the studs, any established Oakland player is at least a speculative trade candidate. There was no real rush to move Irvin, since he still had four years of club control remaining, but he will qualify for arbitration at the end of this season and would start to make a more significant salary. It appears that they received an offer they liked enough to pull the ripcord early and jettison Irvin from the roster in yet another future-focused move.

The Orioles have been looking for rotation upgrades all winter and were reportedly still on the hunt earlier this week. They haven’t been running out huge payrolls in recent years so Irvin’s low salary and years of cheap control were surely appealing to them. They made one modest upgrade to their rotation this offseason by signing veteran Kyle Gibson to a one-year, $10MM deal but have otherwise been quiet until today. Irvin will quickly become the club’s second-most experienced starter behind Gibson.

Irvin, 29 next week, was a Phillies’ draftee and made his MLB debut with them. He made 19 appearances over 2019 and 2020 but with a bloated 6.75 ERA in that time. But his minor league results were much better and the A’s took a shot by sending cash considerations to Philadelphia to get him. The change of scenery went very well for him, as he made 62 starts over the past two seasons with a 4.11 ERA over 359 1/3 innings.

This new change of scenery will have risk for the O’s, though. Irvin has succeeded in Oakland over the past couple of years with a low-strikeout, pitch-to-contact approach. He’s only walked 5.2% of the batters he’s faced over those two campaigns, which is a very strong number. For reference, the league average for starters last year was 7.5%. But he’s only punched out hitters at a 16.8% rate for Oakland, well below last year’s 21.6% league average. His 37.6% ground ball over that span was also a bit below par. That kind of profile has worked for him in the pitcher-friendly confines of Oakland Coliseum but might not be as effective in different conditions. It’s perhaps notable that Irvin has posted a 3.44 ERA at home over the past two years but a 4.88 mark outside of Oakland.

The O’s are apparently undeterred by those splits and have added Irvin to their starting mix, where he and Gibson should take two of the spots. The rest of the rotation will be less certain, with options like Kyle Bradish, Dean Kremer, Tyler Wells, Bruce Zimmermann, Mike Baumann and Spenser Watkins on the 40-man. Each of those guys have a bit of MLB experience but inconsistent results have prevented them from truly establishing themselves as big leaguers. There’s also Grayson Rodriguez, who is considered one of the best pitching prospects in the sport but he’s yet to make his MLB debut and missed most of last year due to a lat strain. John Means could be a factor down the line but likely not until midseason due to undergoing Tommy John surgery in April of last year. It’s a group with a lot of unknowns but the club will hope to get some reliability out of Irvin and Gibson while they sort through the rest and see who separates themselves from the pack. In addition to Irvin, the O’s will add Virbitsky to their system. The 24-year-old was a 17th round draft pick in 2021. He posted a 4.63 ERA last year between Class-A and High-A, striking out 25.7% of batters faced while walking 5.5%. He’ll add some starting depth to the lower levels of their system.

By letting go of Irvin and Virbitsky, the A’s are adding an intriguing young player in Hernaiz. The 21-year-old was a fifth-round selection of the O’s in 2019. Baseball America ranked him the #25 Orioles prospect going into 2020, highlighting his athleticism but noting that the lack of power could be an issue for him. That seems to have played out in his minor league time so far. After the minors were canceled in 2020, Hernaiz spent 2021 in Class-A, hitting six home runs in 94 games. He did steal 22 bases but his .277/.333/.358 batting line was a bit below average, with his wRC+ coming in at 92. In 2022, he shot up three levels, going from Class-A to High-A and Double-A. He got into 105 games between those three levels and stole 32 bases with 12 home runs. His combined batting line of .273/.341/.438 resulted in a 112 wRC+. He’s split his time between second base, third base and shortstop and will slot into Oakland’s infield prospect mix. He struggled in his first 13 Double-A games and will likely head back to that level to start this season. He’ll be Rule 5 eligible at the end of the upcoming season.

The O’s have plenty of infield prospects, with the likes of Gunnar Henderson, Coby Mayo, Joey Ortiz, Jackson Holliday, Jordan Westburg and Connor Norby some of the exciting youngsters in the system. It seems they felt they could part with Hernaiz and still be in good shape there, whereas the A’s have continued to bolster their farm by subtracting from their major league club. Without Irvin, their rotation will consist of offseason signees Shintaro Fujinami and Drew Rucinski, incumbents Paul Blackburn and James Kaprielian, as well as a huge pile of unestablished options who will be jockeying for playing time as the season rolls along.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported the deal before the official announcement (Twitter links).

Michael Irvin says Franco Harris died suddenly

Getty Images

In the short time since the unexpected passing of Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris, hardly any details have emerged as to the cause of his death.

Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin, who’ll call the Saturday night Raiders-Steelers game along with Rich Eisen, Kurt Warner, and Steve Mariucci, indicated during a Friday appearance on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh that Franco died suddenly.

“His wife will tell you, the thing is, there was so much going on for him that he was telling everybody ‘Yes. He was giving everybody a ‘Yeah,’ because that’s the type of person he is, he wants to help everybody out,” Irvin said, via Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan. “He came home one night, said he was exhausted, sat down and when she went to go brush her teeth, and when she came back, he moved from time to eternity.”

Franco was only 72 years old. The Steelers will retire his number, 32, on Saturday, one day after the fiftieth anniversary of the Immaculate Reception.

Maybe no one should ever wear No. 32 again, on any NFL team.

Bailey, Irvin Continue Sparring as Big-Money GOP Illinois Governor’s Primary Nears End – NBC Chicago

The big-money contest to determine the Republican challenger to Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is finally nearing its end, and candidates are making their final pushes to sway voters ahead of Tuesday’s vote.

The election, which has seen millions of dollars pumped in from several high-profile billionaires, is shaping up to the most expensive non-presidential race in American history.

Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin, who had the lion’s share of the early momentum and received nearly $50 million in donations from businessman Ken Griffin, has faded in the polls in the lead-up to the election, dropping to third in some surveys.

“I think the problem that Mayor Irvin had was that he couldn’t decide who exactly he wanted to be,” Southern Illinois University professor John Jackson said.

Irvin also faced a withering spree of ad spending from the Democratic Governor’s Association and from Pritzker himself, with a combined $30 million spent on advertising against the early frontrunner.

On the election’s eve, it is instead State Sen. Darren Bailey that seems to have the upper hand. He has spent recent days flying across the state, visiting all 102 of Illinois’ counties, and he has also gained traction thanks to the endorsement of former President Donald Trump over the weekend.

“There were people out there that were just checked out,” he said. “Now they’re seeing this (endorsement), so now they’re thinking ‘we have an option?’”

Bailey had sought out Trump’s endorsement for months in the lead-up to the election, and finally got the nod at a rally supporting Rep. Mary Miller, who is locked in a heated battle with Rep. Rodney Davis in Illinois’ 13th District.

The state senator from Xenia also has earned the support of shipping supply magnate Dick Uihlein, who has given Bailey nearly $10 million in donations.

Bailey jumped into the public consciousness during the COVID pandemic in 2020, suing Pritzker’s administration over its stay-at-home order. The senator has been a frequent critic of Pritzker’s handling of the pandemic, and says that he feels that a new leader is needed to address the problems that Illinoisans face.

“I think Governor Pritzker is delusioned in everything he does,” Bailey said. “He’s a failed leader. What has he done to help all of us?”

For his part, Pritzker has largely focused his ad spending against Irvin, but the Democratic Governor’s Association has also run ads against Bailey, arguing that he is too conservative to guide Illinois forward and criticizing his connections to Trump.

“With this new endorsement from Trump himself, there’s no question: Darren bailey is the most MAGA, far-right conservative candidate in this race,” DGA Illinois Press Secretary Yael Sheinfeld said in a statement. “A would-be Governor Bailey poses a serious threat for Illinoisans everywhere. Voters know Darren Bailey is far too conservative for our state.”

Pritzker will hold his Election Day event in Chicago, while other GOP candidates continue to barnstorm around the state. Bailey will be in Desplaines on Monday night. Sullivan, who is hoping for a large turnout on Tuesday, will be in Lombard for an event.

Michael Irvin on Dwayne Haskins’ death: ‘Hate that his time got cut short’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Dwayne Haskins was struck and killed in a tragic incident along a South Florida highway over the weekend and his death resonated across the NFL world.

The former Washington and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback came into the NFL before the start of the 2019 season. He was Washington’s first-round pick of the 2019 draft and started 13 games for the team between 2019 and 2020. He was let go after the 2020 season and was signed by the Steelers before the 2021 season. He served primarily in the backup role.

Michael Irvin, a former Dallas Cowboys legend who serves as an analyst for the NFL Network and continues to watch the team closely, told Fox News Digital in a recent interview he only met Haskins maybe once and felt “badly” when he heard the news of the quarterback’s passing.

“I felt so badly when I heard that news. I felt badly when I watched some of the things that went down with him in the few years he had in the NFL. I thought he was thrown in a tough situation in Washington. It’s a tough situation,” Irvin said.

Irvin, who recently became an investor in the education platform TradeZing, said he was hoping Haskins was going to continue to develop and progress back into a starting quarterback.

“There’s a lot of pressure put on quarterbacks coming into this league, and the quarterback has to carry this mantra, and it’s a difficult mantra to carry. They expect you to be a certain way and lead a bunch of grown men, and I thought he needed a little more time,” Irvin said. “He could have developed into all that he wanted to be in the National Football League.

“I just hate that his time got cut short, and I’m praying for his family and his friends.”

Haskins was killed early Saturday morning when he was struck by a dump truck while walking along a South Florida highway, officials said. Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Indiana Miranda said Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when there was oncoming traffic,” Miranda said in a statement.

Miranda said the incident is “an open traffic homicide investigation.”

Michael Irvin on Packers’ Aaron Rodgers: ‘If you’re thinking about retiring, you’re already retired’

Hall of Famer Michael Irvin believes Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ poor performance in the 38-3 Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints was due to him mulling possible retirement.

Rodgers completed 15 of 28 passes for just 133 yards, with two interceptions.

Irvin believes Rodgers’ retirement talk during the offseason led to his lackluster play.

“This game is too hard,” Irvin told TMZ Sports on Friday. “That’s why you hear people say, if you’re talking about or thinking about retiring, you’re already retired.”

Irvin continued: “Aaron was thinking about not playing. And it showed up, man.”

DOLPHINS’ WILL FULLER OUT WITH PERSONAL ISSUE, NO TIMETABLE ON RETURN

Rodgers and the Packers had quite the offseason. The star quarterback had issues with the team’s general manager and he fought with the franchise over contract and personnel decisions. Rodgers didn’t attend a single team practice or workout over the summer. Instead, he took time out to host “Jeopardy!” and traveled around the world with fiancee Shailene Woodley.

Despite his sub-par performance in Week 1, Irvin believes Rodgers will return to form.

“You’ve got to hope that he is ready,” Irvin told TMZ. “Because there’s nothing that you can say.”
