‘West Side Story’ Star Rachel Zegler Says She’s Not Invited to Oscars – The Hollywood Reporter

West Side Story star Rachel Zegler made a comment on social media about not having received an invitation to the Academy Awards later this month.

On Sunday, the actress, 20, posted a series of images on her personal Instagram account along with the caption “a quarter of the year well spent.” In the comments section, a user wrote: “Can’t wait to see what you’ll be wearing on Oscar night.” Zegler responded directly to that person, writing: “i’m not invited so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel.”

The 94th Academy Awards are set to take place March 27, with Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes serving as hosts.

Each nominee and presenter is offered a pair of tickets. Other tickets come out of allotments given to each studio, although the Academy not infrequently finds additional tickets for VIPs who wish to attend.

Zegler elaborated, suggesting that she has attempted to obtain a ticket and sharing how proud she is of the project. “Idk y’all i have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening :’) I will root for west side story from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago.”

Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story is competing for best picture in a category that includes The Power of the Dog and CODA. The film received six other nominations including best director and best supporting actress for Ariana DeBose. While Zegler is not nominated for an Oscar, she won a Golden Globe for her performance as María.

Zegler, who is currently shooting Mark Webb’s Snow White in London for Disney — the same studio which distributed West Side Story — continued in her comment: “I hope some last minute miracle occurs and i can celebrate our film in person but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, i guess.”

Referencing the numerous comments that expressed surprise, Zegler went on to write in the thread: “thanks for all the shock and outrage— i’m disappointed, too. but that’s okay. so proud of our movie.”

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to a representative for Zegler, to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, and to Disney.

Below, a Twitter user has taken a screenshot of Zegler’s Instagram comment and reacted to her claim to have not been invited to the Oscars.

On Sunday afternoon, Zegler took to Twitter to thank her fans for the support and clarify her understanding that “a lot of work” goes into film productions and award shows.

She wrote, “my goodness, folks!! appreciate all the support, i really really do. we live in such unprecedented times, and a lot of work behind the scenes goes into making movie magic happen. that goes for film productions (like the one I am so lucky to be currently shooting in london)…”

In a follow-up tweet, Zegler finished her sentence: “…and awards shows alike. let’s all just respect the process and i’ll get off my phone x R.”

One Day at a Time co-showrunner and With Love creator Gloria Calderón Kellett also tweeted in response:

2:53 p.m.: Updated with Zegler’s follow-up tweets.

Boris Johnson: Downing Street staff invited to lockdown-breaking party, leaked email from top official shows

The email, from Johnson’s principal private secretary Martin Reynolds, invited more than 100 staffers to “socially distanced drinks in the No. 10 garden” on May 20, 2020.

At that time, strict lockdown restrictions were in place in England.

Mixing between households was limited to two people, who could only meet outdoors and at a distance of at least 2 meters (6.5 feet). In workplaces, official guidance stated that in-person meetings should only take place if “absolutely necessary.”

In the email, first published by ITV News on Monday, Reynolds said: “After what has been an incredibly busy period it would be nice to make the most of the lovely weather and have some socially distanced drinks in the No10 garden this evening.”

“Please join us from 6pm and bring your own booze!” the email added.

A source who worked in Downing Street at the time has confirmed the contents of the email independently to CNN.

Pressed on Monday by a journalist to answer whether he and his wife, Carrie Johnson, had attended the party, the prime minister said: “That as you know, is the subject of a proper investigation by Sue Gray.”

Gray, a senior civil servant, has been tasked with investigating the alleged parties. She was tasked with investigating the reports after Cabinet Secretary Simon Case was removed from the probe after it was revealed he had known about a party held in his own department.

Johnson has faced multiple claims that social events were held inside 10 Downing Street in the run up to Christmas 2020, when local restrictions barred such gatherings.

Last month, a photo emerged allegedly showing Johnson drinking wine with Downing Street staff during a gathering that took place on May 15, 2020. The image, shared with The Guardian, shows staff gathered in the garden at Downing Street, which is also the Prime Minister’s residence. In the photo, Johnson is seen with his then-fiancée Carrie Symonds and two others seated at a table with bottles of wine and a cheeseboard.

A Downing Street spokesperson responded to the image saying: “Work meetings often take place in the Downing Street garden in the summer months. On this occasion there were staff meetings following a No. 10 press conference.”

On Monday, Johnson would not elaborate on whether he had already been interviewed by Gray yet.

Angela Rayner, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, responding to reports of the email, said: “Boris Johnson has consistently shown that he has no regard for the rules he puts in place for the rest of us.”

“He is trying to get officials to take the fall for his own mistakes, but he sets the tone for the way Downing Street and the rest of government operates,” she added.

Vicky Kaushal-Katrina Kaif wedding: Fake reports of Salman Khan’s sisters planning to attend; Arpita repeats, ‘We have NOT been invited’ – Exclusive! | Hindi Movie News

Arpita Khan was peacefully sitting at her home when ETimes called her and asked about the recent reports surfacing that she and her sister are flying out for Katrina Kaif’s wedding with Vicky Kaushal in Ranthambore. Wonder who spreads these stories when there is no substance in them. Wonder what’s the agenda of spreading such stories.

Arpita told us rather calmly, “We have not been invited. So, how would we go?”

Absolutely. Just hope that this is the last word on Arpita or any member from Salman’s family attending the wedding in question. Of course, unexpected things have happened to bring about a twist in the tale, but can’t we respect someone’s word until it really needs to be questioned?

A Los Angeles woman invited an Afghan refugee family over for Thanksgiving. Here’s what happened at their first Thanksgiving meal

Asghary, a former translator and interpreter for the U.S. Military in Afghanistan, came to the United States on a special immigrant visa in September 2020. He brought his four children, who tried to learn English while enrolled in what was then all-virtual school at the time. His wife joined them five months later.

Thursday was the first time they had been invited by an American household to experience a Thanksgiving meal.

“Every homeland, every nation, every people, every person, they have got a culture or tradition, right? So it is our first time, and now we want to learn a little bit about what this is, really,” Asghary said.

Their host, Kiki Nagy, volunteers for Miry’s List, a Southern California-based group that helps refugee families settle in the U.S. In August, during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, Miry’s List enrolled more than 20 refugee families, about five times the number of families compared to the month before. Next year, the organization is working to prepare to help more than 300 families settle in Southern California.

Nagy had asked the organization’s founder, Miry Whitehill, if she could host an Afghan family for their first Thanksgiving. She was connected with the Asgharys, whom she had never met until the day of the feast.

Nagy made a big turkey, cranberry sauce, potatoes and spinach. But she also prepared a halal lamb to make sure the Asghary family could have something familiar to eat. Asghary said his daughter, especially, liked all the food.

Nagy was eager to not only introduce them to Thanksgiving dishes, but to also show them the tradition of giving thanks.

“From the right and the left, everyone is kind of like, ‘America has got problems — x, y, z,” Nagy said. “In the midst of this conflicting cultural moment, this narrative of division that we hear so much about, that there is something essential to the American experience that is rooted in gratitude, that is rooted in the volunteerism that you leave your country, you leave a situation and you come here with sometimes very little — sometimes with nothing. And you start over. And you create this opportunity for your family.”

Asghary said they have much to be thankful for: “We may have more opportunities in our life in our hands. So of course the foremost example is this, that we are together. Family.”

He said they’re lucky his wife was able to join them before so many others tried to make a chaotic exit in August during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The image of the many families trying to escape Afghanistan in August especially resonated with another guest at the same Thanksgiving party, Tam Van Tran.

Tran, a friend of Nagy’s, was a refugee from Vietnam in 1975. Tran told CNN he and his siblings arrived in the U.S. one week before the fall of Saigon.

“When I saw the photo of the Afghans and the cargo plane, it reminded me very much of just — I was in the same, but it was a gigantic cargo ship,” Tran said.

When Tran came to California, he was about the same age as Asghary’s oldest children. He said he and his siblings escaped initially without their parents, so they were welcomed in the home of Richard and Rejean Schulte, a foster family in Mountain View, California.

He said he could offer the Asgharys a warm welcome: “Brotherhood and camaraderie. In a sense, you know…I went through that experience in ’75.”

Like at many holiday gatherings across the country, several people at the table were at one point new to the country and had to learn American traditions. And many of them worked to seize the opportunity available in their new home country.

Asghary said he tells his children, “We are here for you, the United States is here for you, and everything you have got in your hand. What are you going to do is you have to study. That’s it.”

Nagy hopes one of their first lessons would be from their first Thanksgiving: “To see that that kind of tolerance is really possible in the United States and, um, I guess I would want them to feel, I would appreciate, that Americans are at heart, really a generous people.”

Matt Sorum: Why I Wasn’t Invited To Take Part In Guns N’ Roses Reunion Tour

According to Rolling Stone, former GUNS N’ ROSES drummer Matt Sorum reveals in his new book, “Double Talkin’ Jive: True Rock ‘N’ Roll Stories”, that he learned of the 2016 partial reunion of the band’s classic lineup via the rumor mill even though he was on a South American tour with Slash and Duff McKagan when the Internet chatter first reached him. After he confronted Duff, the bassist told him: “Axl [Rose, GUNS N’ ROSES frontman] wants to use his drummer [Frank Ferrer].” “Go to Axl and tell him you want me on drums,” Sorum responded. “Period. Now’s the time.” “Oh, man,” Duff replied. “I already signed the deal.”

Sorum told Rolling Stone that he has gotten over the fact that he will probably never play with GUNS N’ ROSES again. “I’ve come to terms with the fact that they’re doing their own thing, and I’m doing mine,” he said. “I can’t say that when it went down, I was completely happy with the circumstances. At the same time, I feel really good about my time in the band.”

Asked why he thinks he wasn’t invited on the reunion tour, Matt said: “I think Axl is a loyal guy. He likes his band he’s had for a long time. He didn’t look at it that way. … If anyone in that band is loyal, it’s probably him. He was like, ‘I’m going to bring my guy [Frank Ferrer]. If I get Slash, that’s cool. If I get Duff, that’s cool too. And that’s enough.’ That’s how it went down, and that’s what they’re doing.”

Matt also said that he was invited to appear as a guest on the GUNS N’ ROSES reunion tour but that he didn’t do it because there was no money involved. Asked if he would show up and do it if he was approached about it again, he said: “I guess I’d have to wait until that call comes to make that decision. Right now, I have a baby and I’m nesting. I have a lot of different things going on in my life. I just produced Billy Gibbons‘s new record. I’m about to start my own. I have six startup companies. I’m a busy guy. It’s gotta be what works with my life. I feel really good about my time in the band. And I always thank GUNS N’ ROSES for my legacy going forward.”

GN’R‘s hugely successful reunion features Rose, Slash and McKagan alongside Ferrer, keyboardist Dizzy Reed, guitarist Richard Fortus and second keyboardist Melissa Reese.

Sorum, who replaced Steven Adler in GUNS N’ ROSES, recorded the highly successful albums “Use Your Illusion I” and “Use Your Illusion II” (both 1991) and “The Spaghetti Incident” (1994). He also supported the group on the “Use Your Illusion” tour and can be heard on GUNS N’ ROSES“Live Era: ’87-’93” (1999) and “Greatest Hits” (2004).

Matt was among the GUNS N’ ROSES members who were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in April 2012. He, Adler, Slash and McKagan attended the ceremony, while Rose and founding guitarist Izzy Stradlin stayed home.

Sorum told The Pulse Of Radio in a 2009 interview that if the classic GUNS N’ ROSES band reunited, they should perform with both him and Adler. “If it’s me on drums or Steven or whatever, if it happened, it’d be great, you know,” he said. “I would actually say to them, ‘Hey, bring both of us back,’ you know. Let me play the other stuff. We’ll have two drum kits. I don’t care. If ‘Appetite [For Destruction]’ [the band’s debut] sounds better with Steven playing it, have both guys up there. They can afford it.”

Back in 2018, Izzy blamed his non-involvement with the GUNS N’ ROSES reunion tour on the fact that he and the other guys in the band were unable “to reach a happy middle ground through the negotiation process.” He also previously claimed that he stepped away from the reunion because the band didn’t want to “split the loot equally.”

“Double Talkin’ Jive: True Rock ‘N’ Roll Stories” came out on September 7 via Rare Bird Books.

Curtis Sliwa, GOP candidate for NYC mayor, says he wasn’t invited to White House to discuss crime reduction

Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate for mayor of New York City, questioned why he wasn’t invited Monday to meet with President Biden and several law enforcement leaders from across the nation to discuss strategies on how to reduce violent crime — while his Democratic opponent, Eric Adams, was.

Sliwa said Adams, a former police officer and current Brooklyn borough president, has already been coronated as the mayor by the media.

The founder of the Guardian Angels anti-crime group said he should have been invited to the White House roundtable given his vast experience with gun violence.

Sliwa was kidnapped and shot five times in 1992 while trying to hail a taxi in what was thought to be a mafia hit. John Gotti Jr., son of John Gotti, the deceased former leader of the Gambino crime family, was tried multiple times for the shooting but never convicted.

NYC MAYOR DE BLASIO MOCKED FOR TWEET ON ‘BRIGHT’ FUTURE AMID CITY’S CRIME WAVE

Curtis Sliwa founded the “Guardian Angels” in 1979.

Prosecutors alleged Gotti tried to have Sliwa killed because he criticized his father on his radio show.

“Having been a victim of gun violence and having gone through the federal court system in handling that, in dealing with violence in the streets would have given a more pragmatic and more common sense solution to our problems,” Sliwa said during a news conference. “I’m hoping the process was not a political one because really this is a tremendous advantage for Eric Adams.”

“I think I should have had a place at the table,” he added.

He also blasted Adams for purporting to be a law and order candidate despite taking positions to the contrary, for instance supporting making the city’s subway system free, which Sliwa said would entice offenders to take their crimes underground.

“That’s not a law and order philosophy. I represent a law and order philosophy,” he said. “I guarantee you. It’s almost like we’re going to see round three of [Mayor] Bill de Blasio in office, except his name will be Eric Adams.”

Other leaders who attended the White House meeting included Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser and Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown. Shootings and killings are on the rise across the country as violent crime started to balloon in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sliwa said he would have told Biden and law enforcement leaders that problems began in New York City when officials voted to slash the police budget amid the defund the police movement and when the “no bail” law was enacted, after which some suspected criminals are cut loose only to re-offend days or even hours later.

“There’s no reason to even have judges,” he said. “They can’t make a decision about flight risk. They can’t make decisions as to whether the individual charged is a danger to themselves or anyone else.”

As of Sunday, New York City experienced 225 reported homicides, 10 more than in the same time frame last year, according to police figures. Shootings are also up, with 803 this year versus 623 last year as of July 11, the New York Police Department said.

Black choir at Harry and Meghan’s wedding says Prince Charles invited them

More On:

prince charles

Kingdom come … to Prince Charles’ defense.

Members of The Kingdom’s Choir — who performed at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding — are speaking up in defense of Prince Charles as the royal family faces allegations of racism stemming from the Sussexes’ Sunday night pow-wow with Oprah Winfrey.

Ms. Karen Gibson, founder and conductor of The Kingdom’s Choir, told TMZ Thursday that it was Prince Charles who invited the African-American group to bless the congregation during Harry and Meg’s nuptials, an invitation she believed to be sincere. She also claims Charles has gone “out of his way” to congratulate them on their success since the event.

Markle claimed during the bombshell interview in question that a member of the royal family voiced concern over her and Harry’s son Archie’s skin color, as Markle’s mother is African-American. Winfrey has confirmed that neither the Queen nor Prince Phillip are the royals in question, leading many to point the finger at Charles and/or his eldest son, Prince William.

For his part, William insisted that the royals are “very much not a racist family” when questioned. Charles has yet to address the allegations, only letting out a nervous chuckle when asked about the controversial Q&A.
