Ronaldo ‘insulted’ by South Korea player

AL RAYYAN, Qatar — Cristiano Ronaldo was “insulted” by South Korea player Cho Gue-sung as he left the pitch, according to Fernando Santos, as the Portugal coach sought to defend the striker’s frustrated reaction to being substituted.

Ronaldo appeared to have a verbal exchange with Cho as he walked towards the benches and then put his finger to his mouth.

The 37-year-old looked unhappy at the decision to bring him off in the 65th minute but after the 2-1 defeat which sent South Korea into the last 16, Santos insisted it was his interaction with Cho that had made the former Manchester United forward “angry”.

“The player from Korea was insulting him telling him to go away, so that is the reason why he was angry, everyone saw that,” said Santos.

“I saw the interaction with the Korea player and I don’t have any doubts about it and if you see the images you see Pepe went towards the Korea player.

“He was not aggressive, he was only verbally aggressive, he was speaking in English to Cristiano, and Cristiano said, ‘Perhaps he had a bad day.'”

Ronaldo told Portuguese reporters that Cho was trying to hurry him off the pitch.

“What happened was before my substitution, the South Korea player told me to get off quickly. I told him to shut up as he doesn’t have that authority. There was no disagreement [with the coach],” Ronaldo was quoted as saying.

South Korean midfielder Hwang In-Beom had little to say on the incident.

“I didn’t see it, I was too tired,” he said. “I was looking at the ground, so I didn’t see it and I have nothing to say.”

Portugal still finished top of Group H despite conceding a 91st-minute winner to Hwang Hee-chan which saw South Korea edge out Uruguay for a place in the knockout rounds.

Santos’ team are set to face the second-place team from Group H — probably Switzerland, Serbia or Cameroon — but he insisted defeat to South Korea should serve as a “warning” to his squad.

– Dawson: Son steps up to send South Korea through

“We are somewhat upset,” Santos added.

“We are first in the group, but we wanted to win and have a better game to increase the morale of the players. But this result serves as a warning to our team.”

Meanwhile, South Korea are set to face Brazil after qualifying for the second round for the first time since 2010.

They were heading out until Hwang’s dramatic winner which saw them qualify on goals scored ahead of Uruguay, who exit the World Cup despite beating Ghana 2-0.

“Before the match Son Heung-min told me I was going to create something today,” said Hwang.

“He said, ‘We trust you.’ When I went on as a substitute a lot of team mates also said they trusted me. When Son got the ball I was convinced he would pass to me and it was an excellent pass. It made my job easy.

“It was difficult waiting for the other result but we proved we could make it to knockout phase and we kept that trust. This is something we wanted and we expected. I want to share these great feelings with the Korean people back home.”

Steph joins Dubs fans in mocking Boston bar that insulted Ayesha

After the Warriors won Game 5 Monday night and took a 3-2 series lead, Curry himself got in on making fun of the bar’s possibly series-jinxing sign.

When speaking to reporters after the game, Curry arrived wearing a custom t-shirt reading, “Ayesha Curry CAN Cook,” clearly a swipe at Game On!, the bar outside Fenway Park that displayed the sign. A reporter in the room was seemingly unaware of the context behind the shirt, and naturally had questions as to why Curry was wearing a shirt proclaiming that a celebrity chef can cook. After all, it’s the equivalent of her wearing a shirt that reading “Steph Curry can play basketball.”

“You gotta ask around the room and ask Twitter,” Curry replied.

Curry finished with 16 points in Game 5, and snapped a streak of 233 straight regular season and postseason games with a made three-pointer. The last time he played a game without making a single three was in November 2018.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been happier after a 0-for-whatever type of night, just knowing the context of the game, the other ways you tried to impact the game and the fact that you had four guys step up in meaningful ways to help us win offensively,” Curry said after the game.

The Warriors will have a chance to close out the series Thursday night, when the series heads back to Boston one last time for Game 6. We shall see if the bar has any new signage or if it would prefer to hide under a rock since the Warriors are now 2-0 in games since the sign was discovered.

Australian man who insulted Chinese President Xi Jinping says police told him he will be charged

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

An Australian man who held up a sign displaying an insult against Chinese President Xi Jinping at a busy Asian market in Sydney said he’s been told by authorities he could be charged over the incident even though he was reportedly attacked by Chinese nationalists.

Drew Pavlou was filmed holding the sign that read “F*** Xi Jinping” in Chinese on Saturday at the Eastwood Plaza. The signage quickly triggered an angry reaction from some shoppers, some of whom vented their frustration, according to footage of the incident on Pavlou’s Twitter account.

.The video shows angry people confronting him.

“America has genocide,” according to subtitles in a video of the incident.

WARNING: GRAPHIC LANGUAGE

Another man snatches the sign and throws it to the ground. One said he was “disrespecting Chinese here.” During the encounter, Pavlou tells the crowd he is non-violent.

He later tweeted that the New South Wales Police Force contacted him to inform him that detectives were investigating him and that he would likely be charged.

“NSW Police want to charge me for holding a sign insulting Xi Jinping while campaigning in Sydney,” Lavlou wrote. “They won’t even tell me what I’m being charged with. I’m sick of attacks on free speech, Australia desperately needs a Bill of Rights to protect free expression.”

He also tweeted about the Chinese government’s oppression of Uyghur Muslims who have been rounded up and detained in camps.

A spokesperson for the police force declined to confirm that Pavlou was being investigated but said they were investigating an alleged assault that occurred during a political protest at the Eastwood Plaza.

“Following inquiries, investigators attended an Eastwood home and spoke with a 48-year-old man about 4.30pm today,” a police statement said. “He was issued a court attendance notice for Common Assault and is due to appear at Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday.”

In a tweet, Pavlou called threats of being charged an “intimidation tactic.”

“I should be able to insult a dictator like Xi Jinping in my own country without being physically assaulted & attacked. Australia is a democracy and we should be free to insult any leader no matter how coarsely – this is a simple principle of free speech,” he wrote. “No way would I have been surrounded by 50 people and physically assaulted if I held up a sign saying “F*** Scott Morrison” in Sydney. Why should Chinese ultra-nationalists get a free pass to assault people in Australia if someone insults Xi Jinping?”
