Sperms Whales Learned How to Dodge Harpoons And Taught The Skills to Others

Sperm whales taught each other how to avoid harpoons after hunting for them began 200 years ago, according to a new study.

Published by the Royal Society on Wednesday, the research was based on newly digitized logbooks from American whalers, which recorded details of their expeditions in the North Pacific during the 19th century, such as the number of whales spotted or harpooned.

Although they were in high demand for their whalebone, ivory, and blubber and almost 80,000 ‘voyage days’ recorded, there were only 2,405 successful whale sightings, a mere 3 percent success rate.

The study’s authors, cetacean researchers Professor Hal Whitehead and Dr. Luke Rendell, as well as data scientist Dr. Tim D Smith, also found that the strike rate of the whalers’ harpoons fell by 58 percent in less than two and half years after they first began hunting in the region.

In Halifax, Canada, Professor Whitehead of Dalhousie University told The Owen Sun Sound Times: “That was very remarkable. I thought there might be a drop, but not that much and not that quickly.

“Usually, you expect it to increase as they figure out stuff and become more successful. That’s typically how our exploitation of wildlife goes. We become more efficient as we learn how to do it.”

The study concluded that sperm whales had learned how they were being killed, shared this information with their pod, and changed their behavior accordingly, displaying “cultural evolution.”

The species live with their children in female-only pods or groups, allowing them to form close links and share tips to evade hunters.

The hunters recognized the sperm whales had developed tactics to evade them. Instead of forming defensive squares used to fight off their natural predators, the killer whale, the sperm whales, understood that swimming against the wind would allow them to outrun the wind-powered hunters’ ships.

The advent of steam power and grenade harpoons in the later years of the 19th century meant even the canny sperm whale was doomed to mass slaughter, however.

“This was cultural evolution, much too fast for genetic evolution,” says Whitehead.

Sperm whales have the largest brain of any animal on the planet and the researchers highlighted that if they were able to adapt 200 years ago, they could probably also face the ocean’s challenges today.

Long COVID Symptoms Are Vanishing For Some Vaccinated Patients, And We Don’t Know Why

A woman who had long COVID said her symptoms were gone 36 hours after getting her second dose of COVID-19 vaccine, according to The Washington Post.

Arianna Eisenberg, 34, said she experienced muscle pains, insomnia, fatigue, and brain fog for eight months after getting sick. These symptoms are typical of what has become known as “long COVID”.

But 36 hours after receiving a second dose of COVID-19 vaccine, her symptoms were gone, the Post reported.

Eisenberg’s story is one of several describing a similar effect.

The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Huffington Post also reported on people for whom long COVID symptoms improved after vaccination.

Daniel Griffith, an infectious diseases clinician and researcher at Columbia University, told The Verge on March 2 that around a third of his long COVID patients reported that they were feeling better after the vaccine.

In a YouTube video, Gez Medinger, a science journalist who reports on long COVID, did a survey of 473 long haulers among support groups on Facebook, The Verge reported, around a third of whom saw their symptoms improve after vaccination.

One small study from the UK’s University of Bristol, which has not been peer reviewed, looked at giving vaccines to people with long COVID-19 symptoms, per the Washington Post report.

The scientists gave the vaccine to 44 COVID long-haulers, and compared their reaction to a group of long-haulers who didn’t get the vaccine.

They reported that those who had received the vaccine had a “small overall improvement in long COVID symptoms”.

However, the authors said that this could be down to the placebo effect.

This is just one of a series of puzzling reports surrounding long COVID.

On March 3, Kaiser Health News reported that a 15 year-old dancer developed COPD, a disease which is usually seen in older people, after contracting COVID-19 last summer.

As reported by Insider’s Aria Bendix, scientists also cannot explain why most of the people who develop long COVID are women, although some scientists think that it could be because women tend to mount stronger immune responses than men.

Recovery clinics for long COVID patients have been opening up, Insider’s Sophia Ankel reported.

But the condition is still not well understood. The US National Institutes of Health has been given over $US1 ($1) billion by Congress to investigate long COVID.

Rumour: Nintendo Switch Pro “Will Have Exclusives”, Says Insider

Bloomberg published a story earlier this week about Nintendo’s plans to release a new Switch model that would come equipped with a Samsung OLED display which will consume less battery, and offer higher contrast and possibly even a faster response time. It’s reportedly a 7-inch, 720p-resolution panel and will be able to support “4K ultra-high definition graphics” when paired with televisions.

ResetEra user and known industry insider NateDrake – who has been linked to various other Nintendo leaks in the past, has now expanded on this story, claiming the new Switch unit will host some “select exclusives”, especially from third-party partners.

“There will be some select exclusives, especially from third-party partners. May not be a big number of them, but I know of at least one.”

In a separate post, the same source said Nintendo’s plan was to position the device as a revision.

“Nintendo’s plans are to position it as a revision. A premium model, if you will.”

If this rumoured system does come with a bit of extra grunt, it would be no surprise to see third-party companies, in particular, wanting to port across more technically demanding titles that the current Switch would likely struggle with. In fact, there are even some games on the current models that could use with a much-needed performance boost.

As for Nintendo, if you reflect on the 3DS era, you’ll know it made a handful of titles exclusive to the New Nintendo 3DS. One of the first ones was Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, which no doubt provided some extra sales for the company. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if a Switch revision followed a similar pattern.

At the moment, Nintendo and Samsung representatives have declined to comment on these latest rumours, and Nintendo’s president last month went as far as saying the Japanese company had no plans to announce a new version of the Switch any time soon.

How would you feel about certain games being exclusive to the rumoured Switch Pro model? Share your thoughts down below.

Capcom Insider Backs Up Previous Claims Of Switch “Focused” Resident Evil Revelations 3 Release

Last year, Capcom suffered a leak revealing a game called Resident Evil Outrage was scheduled for a Q4 2021 release.

As previously stated by Capcom insider Dusk Golem, this title is apparently Resident Evil Revelations 3 (or at least was originally named that at some point during development) and will be a “Switch-focused RE game” but not exclusive to the platform.

The same insider has now backed up previous claims – stating the game will arrive “within a year of [Resident Evil] Village’s release” which is due out in May this year, and will be part of Capcom’s big 25th anniversary celebrations for its long-running survival horror series.

“This is not from me, but for the record, Revelations 3 is coming out within a year of Village’s release date, either late 2021 or early 2022.

“Releases as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations, along with Village, almost definitely going to be a Switch timed exclusive. But that’ll be announced later this year, for now Village is deserving of the attention, and out in just a few months now!”

Dusk Golem goes on to state how the game is “100%” running on the RE Engine that Capcom used for Monster Hunter Rise and while it’s a “timed exclusive”, it’ll be releasing “on everything” as a cross-generation game. It was also mentioned how Rebecca would still be the protagonist:

“I first heard about Rev 3 in 2017 that it’d star Rebecca, and I’ve been updated several times over the years its a Rebecca game still. I’m semi aware of who the 2nd & 3rd protagonists are too, both returning characters, but these lips are zipped for now.”

Dusk Golem previously shed light on a new Monster Hunter game for Switch well before the official announcement – explaining how it would be running on the RE Engine.

The last entry in the Revelations line was Resident Evil Revelations 2 – an episodic take on the survival horror series, which originally launched in 2015 and surfaced on Switch in 2017.
