Video footage of the crashed taxi seemed to show it hit planters on the sidewalk before running into the building.

Three of the four people injured are in critical condition, sources said. Firefighters and EMS treated the patients at the scene and rushed them to Bellevue Hospital, according to the FDNY. Police have not released the identities of those hurt and it’s unclear if the driver was among the injured.

Driver arrested, accused of crashing into Salem homeless camp, killing 4, injuring 3

(Update: Jail lists 14 charges, including DUII)

SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) — Police arrested on manslaughter, DUII and other charges a 24-year-old driver who they said crashed into a homeless encampment in Salem early Sunday morning, killing four people and injuring three others, including the driver.

Salem police said Enrique Rodriguez Jr., 24, was arrested and lodged in the Marion County Jail on four counts of first-degree manslaughter as well as second- and third-degree assault and six counts of reckless endangerment. The jail booking sheet Sunday night showed he was being held without bail on the manslaughter charges and also listed a total of 14 charges, including misdemeanor DUII.

The crash was reported at 2 a.m. in the area of Front Street and Division Street Northeast, not far from the Willamette River, police said.

Police said a preliminary investigation by the Salem Police Traffic Team indicated the driver of a two-door sports coupe was traveling northbound on Front Street, passing Union Street, when the car left the roadway and crashed into an unsheltered encampment, pinning two people beneath the car.

The camp was located at the corner where Front ST NE intersects with the Front ST business route known as OR99E.

Two people died at the scene, police said. Four others from the encampment were transported to Salem Health with life-threatening injuries, two of whom later died at the hospital. Rodriguez, who was alone in the car, also was transported for medical treatment, they said.

The exact number of individuals and tents at the encampment is not known, police said.

Officers helped several uninjured campers collect some of their belongings and provided shelter assistance. Three people were taken to a local motel. “The city of Salem’s homeless advocacy partners were also contacted in an effort to get the members of out unsheltered community connected to needed resources as a result this tragedy,” the update stated.

“The Salem Police Traffic Team is actively investigating the circumstances and believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor,” officers said.

None of those involved were being named, pending notification to family members. Police said they don’t have any updated information on the condition of the survivors of the crash.

Salem police extended thanks to the Marion and Polk county sheriff’s offices and Keizer police for their help handling emergency calls in Salem so police could “focus resources to the incident.”

“At this stage, there are no elements to suggest that the attack had a terrorist motive,” prosecutor Damien Verheyen told a news conference.

Initial media reports stated the car had potentially been involved in a high-speed chase with police before the crash. The prosecutor’s office denied the reports later Sunday.

The driver and a second person were arrested once the car came to a stop.

NYC crime: Gunman sought in shootings of 5 homeless men in New York City, Washington, D.C. arrested

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — ATF agents in Washington, D.C. have arrested the suspect wanted for allegedly stalking homeless men sleeping on the streets of New York City and D.C.

The suspect fatally shot two people and wounded three more in less than two weeks.

He was picked up in southeast Washington early Tuesday morning.

A law enforcement source tells ABC News there is a high degree of confidence the man seen in surveillance photos and videos is the man arrested.

He was taken into custody in Washington, D.C.’s southeast section after allegedly shooting at least five homeless men and killing two of them in both DC and New York.

Overnight NYPD officers hit the streets in Lower Manhattan, handing out flyers with the suspect’s name and picture, trying to make sure the local homeless population knew that he’s been targeting them.

They also tried to get any homeless individuals into a shelter.

Mayor Eric Adams was in D.C. before the arrest and talked about the importance of apprehending the suspect quickly.

“We don’t want to lose another resident in this city, in New York, or anywhere else. This person is carrying out a premeditated act of shooting innocent people,” Adams said.

On Howard Street in SoHo, some people have left behind signs marking the spot where that man was killed.

Now, just three days after that murder, there’s an arrest.

Police say ballistic evidence actually linked the same gun to all five shootings.

The DC Police Department’s Head of the Homicide Unit, Captain Kevin Kentish, is credited with making the connection between the New York City and DC incidents.

Kintish, a native of Queens, New York, “happened to be scrolling through social media and saw the image of the NYC suspect,” Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Robert Contee III said. “During that review, he took that image to his team, based upon the similarities, came together with ATF and forensically connected these cases.”

The NYPD says that link was critical, and together, the two departments and ATF had a trove of clear images and video of the killer.

A $70,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest; $25,000 in NYC, $25,000 in DC and $20,000 from ATF. It’s not yet known if anyone will claim the reward money.

NYC crime: Gunman sought in shootings of 5 homeless men in New York City, Washington, D.C.

TRIBECA, Manhattan (WABC) — The NYPD is searching for a suspect who shot a homeless man while he slept and killed another homeless man in Manhattan Saturday morning.

The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington D.C. announced Sunday night they are looking for the same man, who is wanted for three incidents in Washington D.C.’s northeast section between March 3 and March 9.

Between the two cities, there have been five shootings and two homicides.

Surveillance video from Howard Street in New York City’s Chinatown shows the gunman police in both cities are trying to find.

He is seen kicking one of his victims and looking around before opening fire on Saturday around 6 a.m.

The victim lay there all day before someone discovered him dead around 5 p.m. in the bitter cold.
Another homeless man was shot Saturday at King and Varick streets, but survived.

Meantime, the death of a 43-year-old homeless man in Tribeca Sunday night does not appear connected to the shootings.

There was no indication of criminality, and an extensive video canvass did not turn up any evidence that the man was the victim of a crime.

Detectives will wait for the autopsy before making a final determination.

Regarding the shootings targeting homeless men, NYC Mayor Eric Adams and Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a joint statement, saying

Our communities in DC and New York City are heartbroken and disturbed by these heinous crimes in which an individual has been targeting some of our most vulnerable residents. The two of us spoke about how our teams can coordinate and help one another, and we are calling on everyone in our cities to look at the images of the suspect and report any information, however small, that may be useful. The work to get this individual off our streets before he hurts or murders another individual is urgent. The rise in gun violence has shaken all of us and it is particularly horrible to know that someone is out there deliberately doing harm to an already vulnerable population. As our law enforcement agencies work quickly with federal partners to locate the suspect, we are also calling on unsheltered residents to seek shelter. Again, it is heartbreaking and tragic to know that in addition to all the dangers that unsheltered residents face, we now have a cold-blooded killer on the loose, but we are certain that we will get the suspect off the street and into police custody.”

“It is heartbreaking and tragic to know that in addition to all the dangers that unsheltered residents face, we now have a cold-blooded killer on the loose, but we are certain that we will get the suspect off the street and into police custody.”
The NYPD issued new patrol guidance Sunday following the NYC incidents.

Officers in an internal memo were instructed to “proactively engage with apparently homeless individuals,” conduct wellness checks and offer shelter services.

Police are asking anyone who has seen the suspect in the surveillance video to contact them immediately.

Call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit tips by visiting the CrimeStoppers website at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org or by messaging on Twitter @NYPDTips.

Houston crime: Roland Caballero, suspect accused of injuring 3 officers in shootout near downtown, has been shot, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The man accused of injuring three officers in a shootout near downtown Houston has been shot at a separate location, according to sources.

Roland Caballero was identified as the man who opened fire on the officers following a chase in the 2100 block of McGowen Street.

Officers said they were responding to a disturbance call at 2:40 p.m. in the 1500 block of Tralle Street when a chase ensued. Caballero crashed out on McGowen where the gunshots were exchanged, but he managed to flee the scene in a white Mercedes, according to HPD.

The officers, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital where they are stable, police said.

ABC13 learned from Houston police that the gun used in the shooting may have had a small switch that was added to the suspect’s pistol, making the ordinary Glock handgun which fires one bullet every time the trigger is pulled, into a machine gun.

Riley Hollister, a witness at the scene told ABC13 he heard multiple gunshots, “more than 30 rounds or something. I was over by the park,” he said. “I was doing a little walk, working on my knee and I heard all those gunshots and sirens.”

Bucks’ Grayson Allen Suspended After Injuring Bulls’ Alex Caruso on Flagrant Foul | Bleacher Report

AP Photo/Morry Gash

The NBA suspended Milwaukee Bucks guard Grayson Allen for one game after his Flagrant 2 foul on Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso on Friday, Jan. 21.

“We disagree with the suspension,” the Bucks said in a statement. “We support Grayson and look forward to him rejoining our team for Friday’s game vs. New York.”

The foul in question occurred midway through the third quarter of the Bucks’ 94-90 home win over the Bulls.

As Caruso was going up for a layup, Allen leaped to defend the shot and collided with the guard midair. He also hit Caruso’s head with his left hand as the Bull was falling to the ground.

Allen got ejected. Caruso was shaken up but eventually finished the game. However, the Bulls announced the next day that he would be out six-to-eight weeks with a fractured right wrist.

Allen has a history of dirty play, notably tripping players on three occasions during the 2016-17 season while he was at Duke. The Blue Devils suspended him for one game.

Bulls head coach Billy Donovan alluded to Allen’s past when commenting to reporters following the Bucks game:

Here is Billy Donovan’s full answer when asked about Grayson Allen’s flagrant-2 foul on Alex Caruso and ejection.

It should be noted this is very uncharacteristic of Donovan to single out a player like this. pic.twitter.com/70UZFSMi85

The following day, Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports reported that the NBA was reviewing the play. K.C. Johnson of Yahoo Sports provided more information:

K.C. Johnson @KCJHoop

To be clear, the league is still reviewing the incident. The early indications that Allen’s ejection would be his only discipline were before news of Caruso’s injury. And league does take into account any injury suffered by the offended player. Stay tuned. https://t.co/DYguqR2cP2

In the end, the NBA decided that further punishment was necessary for the four-year NBA veteran, who has averaged 11.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game this year.

Allen sat the Bucks’ 133-127 win over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday with a left hip injury. The Bucks’ next game is Wednesday at the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine ruled out vs. Golden State Warriors after injuring left knee

CHICAGO — Bulls guard Zach LaVine exited Friday’s 138-96 loss to the Golden State Warriors in the first quarter with a left knee injury and did not return.

LaVine will get an MRI on Saturday, but there’s initial confidence that he hasn’t suffered a serious injury, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

LaVine appeared to begin laboring after grabbing an offensive rebound with just under nine minutes remaining in the first quarter. On the next play, he took an intentional foul on Warriors guard Stephen Curry before taking himself out of the game.

He immediately walked toward the Bulls’ locker room with a team trainer, but LaVine was able to move under his own power.

LaVine is averaging 25.6 points on 49% shooting (41% from 3), 4.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 37 games for the Bulls this season.

The Bulls are already without guard Alex Caruso (health and safety), Derrick Jones Jr. (knee), Javonte Green (groin) and Tyler Cook (ankle).

Tokyo train fire: Man wielding knife sets fire to Tokyo train, injuring at least 8 – reports

The incident took place, authorities say, at around 8 p.m. (7 a.m. ET) on a train on the Keio railway line, NHK reported.

The train was operating near Kokuryo Station, in the city of Chofu, west of Tokyo.

The suspect was also reported to have scattered liquid in the train car, which he then set ablaze.

At least eight people were injured, NHK reported citing police. One of the victims, a man in his 60s, is seriously injured and unconscious, the broadcaster added.

Police said a man in his 20s, carrying a knife, has been taken into custody, according to NHK.

The train operator said in a tweet that the train’s operation has been stopped due to the incident.

While violent crime is rare in Japan, there has been a spate of violent knife attacks by assailants unknown to the victims.

In August, 10 passengers on a train in Tokyo were stabbed by a man with a knife, according to the Tokyo Fire Department. The suspect later turned himself in at a convenience store, NHK reported at the time. Tokyo Metropolitan Police said the man confessed that he “just wanted to kill any women who looked happy, anyone,” NHK reported.

In 2019, two people, including a 11-year-old girl, were killed and 17 other children injured in a stabbing spree in the city of Kawasaki, about 13 miles (21 kilometers) from Tokyo. In 2016, 19 people were killed in an attack at a care home for disabled people — the deadliest mass killing in Japan since the end of World War II.

And in June 2008, a man in a light truck drove into a crowd in Tokyo’s popular Akihabara district and then jumped out of the vehicle and started stabbing pedestrians, killing seven people.

Japan — a country considered one of the safest in the world — strictly regulates weapons. It’s illegal for people to carry a pocket knife, craft knife, hunting knife or box cutter in public, according to the US State Department.

CNN’s Yoko Wakatsuki and Miki Lendon contributed reporting.
